19 他們許諾給這些人自由，自己卻是衰朽[a]的奴隸。要知道，一個人被什麼制伏，就成為什麼的奴隸。 20 原來，他們如果藉著認識我們的主、救主耶穌基督而逃脫這世界的汙穢，卻又被這些汙穢糾纏、制伏了，那麼，他們最後的情況就比先前更壞了； 21 因為認識了義的道路以後，背離那交託給他們的神聖誡命，對他們來說，倒不如不認識還好。

19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”(A) 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing(B) our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ(C) and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.(D) 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.(E)
