3 참다못해 우리는 아테네에 그냥 남아 있기로 하고, 2 디모데만 여러분에게 보냈던 것입니다. 그는 우리의 형제이며, 하나님과 더불어 그리스도의 기쁜 소식을 전하는 일꾼입니다. 그를 보낸 것은, 여러분의 믿음을 확고하게 세워 주고 여러분을 격려하여, 3 지금 당하고 있는 시련 때문에 흔들리는 사람이 없도록 하려는 것이었습니다. 우리가 그런 시련을 당하게 되어 있다는 것을 여러분은 잘 알고 계십니다. 4 사실 우리는 여러분과 함께 있을 때에, 앞으로 박해를 당하게 될 것이라고 여러 번 경고하였습니다. 아시다시피 우리가 말한 대로 되었습니다. 5 그 때문에 나는 참다못해 여러분의 믿음이 어느 정도인지 알아보려고 디모데를 보낸 것입니다. 여러분이 유혹하는 자[a]의 유혹에 넘어가서, 우리의 수고가 물거품이 된 것은 아닐까 걱정이 되기도 하였습니다.
6 그런데 지금 디모데가 여러분에게서 돌아와, 여러분의 믿음과 사랑에 대한 기쁜 소식을 우리에게 알려 주었습니다. 그는, 여러분이 우리를 늘 좋게 생각하고 있으며, 우리가 여러분을 보고 싶어하는 것처럼 여러분도 우리를 보고 싶어한다고 말해 주었습니다. 7 그러므로, 형제자매 여러분, 우리는 여러분의 믿음에 관한 소식을 듣고 우리가 겪고 있는 이 모든 어려움과 박해 속에서도 여러분에 대한 걱정을 크게 덜게 되었습니다. 8 여러분이 주님 안에 굳게 서 있으니, 우리는 정말로 사는 보람이 있습니다. 9 우리가 여러분 때문에 우리 하나님 앞에서 큰 기쁨을 누리고 있습니다. 여러분 때문에 누리는 모든 기쁨에 대해 우리가 하나님께 어떻게 감사를 드려야 충분한 감사가 되겠습니까? 10 우리는 여러분을 직접 만나 여러분의 믿음에 부족한 것들을 채워 줄 수 있게 되기를 밤낮으로 열심히 기도하고 있습니다.
11 우리는 하나님 아버지와 우리 주 예수께서 우리가 여러분에게 갈 수 있는 길을 열어 주시기를 바라고 있습니다. 12 그리고 주님께서 여러분의 사랑을 키워 주시기를 바랍니다. 그리하여 여러분을 향한 우리의 사랑이 흘러넘치듯, 여러분도 그렇게 서로 사랑하고 나아가 모든 사람을 사랑하기를 바랍니다. 13 그리고 여러분의 마음을 굳세게 해 주시어, 우리 주 예수께서 그분의 모든 거룩한 천사들을 데리고 다시 오실 때에, 여러분이 우리 하나님 아버지 앞에서 흠 없고 거룩한 사람들[b]로 설 수 있게 해 주시기를 빕니다.

디모데의 환영 소식
3 우리는 더 이상 기다릴 수가 없어서 우리만 아테네에 남아 있기로 하고
2 우리의 형제이며 그리스도의 기쁜 소식을 위해 일하는 동역자 디모데를 먼저 여러분에게 보냈습니다. 이것은 그가 여러분의 믿음을 강하게 하고 여러분을 격려하여
3 박해 가운데서도 흔들리지 않게 하기 위한 것입니다. 우리가 이런 고난을 당할 수밖에 없다는 것은 여러분도 잘 알고 있습니다.
4 우리가 여러분과 함께 있을 때 앞으로 우리가 박해를 받을 것이라고 여러분에게 말했는데 여러분이 아는 대로 정말 그렇게 되었습니다.
5 그래서 내가 더 이상 참을 수 없어서 여러분의 믿음을 알아보려고 디모데를 보냈습니다. 혹시 사탄이 여러분을 꾀어 우리가 수고한 것을 헛되게 할까 염려해서 그렇게 한 것입니다.
6 그런데 지금 디모데가 돌아와 여러분의 믿음과 사랑이 이전처럼 확고하다는 반가운 소식을 전해 주었습니다. 또 여러분이 언제나 우리를 좋게 생각하고 우리가 여러분을 그리워하고 있듯이 여러분도 우리를 보고 싶어한다는 사실도 그가 말해 주었습니다.
7 형제 여러분, 그래서 우리는 이 모든 고난과 어려움을 겪으면서도 여러분의 믿음으로 큰 위로를 받았습니다.
8 여러분이 주님 안에 굳게 서 있으므로 이제는 우리가 살 것 같습니다.
9 우리가 여러분 때문에 우리 하나님 앞에서 갖게 될 모든 기쁨에 대하여 그 보답으로 하나님께 어떻게 감사해야 좋을지 모르겠습니다.
10 우리는 여러분을 다시 만나 여러분의 믿음에 부족한 것을 채워 줄 수 있게 해 달라고 밤낮 열심히 기도하고 있습니다.
11 우리 하나님 아버지와 주 예수님이 우리의 길을 인도하셔서 여러분에게 갈 수 있게 되기를 바라며
12 우리가 여러분을 사랑하듯 여러분도 더욱더 넘치는 사랑으로 서로 사랑하며 모든 사람을 사랑하게 되기를 주님께 기도합니다.
13 또 여러분의 마음을 굳세게 하셔서 우리 주 예수님이 모든 성도들과 함께 다시 오실 때 하나님 우리 아버지 앞에서 거룩하고 흠이 없게 하시기를 기도합니다.

3 Wherefore when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone;
2 And sent Timotheus, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellowlabourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:
3 That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.
4 For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know.
5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
6 But now when Timotheus came from you unto us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and charity, and that ye have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
7 Therefore, brethren, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:
8 For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.
9 For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;
10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?
11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.
12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:
13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

Concern for Their Faith
3 Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone, 2 and sent (A)Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith, 3 (B)that no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that (C)we are appointed to this. 4 (D)For, in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation, just as it happened, and you know. 5 For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, (E)lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and (F)our labor might be in vain.

Prayer for the Church
11 Now may our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, (L)direct our way to you. 12 And may the Lord make you increase and (M)abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you, 13 so that He may establish (N)your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.
