The Heavenly Sanctuary

11 But Christ came as High Priest of (A)the good things [a]to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not (B)with the blood of goats and calves, but (C)with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place (D)once for all, (E)having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if (F)the blood of bulls and goats and (G)the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, [b]sanctifies for the [c]purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without [d]spot to God, (H)cleanse your conscience from (I)dead works (J)to serve the living God? 15 And for this reason (K)He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that (L)those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.

The Mediator’s Death Necessary

16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. 17 For (M)a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives. 18 (N)Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood. 19 For when Moses had spoken every [e]precept to all the people according to the law, (O)he took the blood of calves and goats, (P)with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, (Q)“This is the (R)blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.” 21 Then likewise (S)he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And according to the law almost all things are [f]purified with blood, and (T)without shedding of blood there is no [g]remission.

Greatness of Christ’s Sacrifice

23 Therefore it was necessary that (U)the copies of the things in the heavens should be [h]purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For (V)Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are [i]copies of (W)the true, but into heaven itself, now (X)to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 not that He should offer Himself often, as (Y)the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another— 26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 (Z)And as it is appointed for men to die once, (AA)but after this the judgment, 28 so (AB)Christ was (AC)offered once to bear the sins (AD)of many. To those who (AE)eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.

Animal Sacrifices Insufficient

10 For the law, having a (AF)shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, (AG)can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once [j]purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For (AH)it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins.

Christ’s Death Fulfills God’s Will(AI)

Therefore, when He came into the world, He said:

(AJ)“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
But a body You have prepared for Me.
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin
You had no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come—
In the volume of the book it is written of Me—
To do Your will, O God.’ ”

Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, [k]O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 (AK)By that will we have been [l]sanctified (AL)through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Christ’s Death Perfects the Sanctified

11 And every priest stands (AM)ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 (AN)But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down (AO)at the right hand of God, 13 from that time waiting (AP)till His enemies are made His footstool. 14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being [m]sanctified.

15 But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,

16 (AQ)“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, (AR)“Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18 Now where there is [n]remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.

17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

18 Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.

19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,

20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.

22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

24 For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:

25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;

26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

10 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,

16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

Redemption Through the Blood of Christ

11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest (A)of the good things that have come,[a] then through (B)the greater and more perfect tent ((C)not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he (D)entered (E)once for all into the holy places, not by means of (F)the blood of goats and calves but (G)by means of his own blood, (H)thus securing an eternal redemption. 13 For if (I)the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with (J)the ashes of a heifer, sanctify[b] for the purification of the flesh, 14 how much more will (K)the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit (L)offered himself without blemish to God, (M)purify our[c] conscience (N)from dead works (O)to serve the living God.

15 Therefore he is (P)the mediator of a new covenant, so that (Q)those who are called may (R)receive the promised eternal inheritance, (S)since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.[d] 16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17 For (T)a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive. 18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated (U)without blood. 19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took (V)the blood of calves and goats, (W)with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, (X)“This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both (Y)the tent and all the vessels used in worship. 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and (Z)without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

23 Thus it was necessary for (AA)the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places (AB)made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God (AC)on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as (AD)the high priest enters (AE)the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, (AF)he has appeared (AG)once for all (AH)at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as (AI)it is appointed for man to die once, and (AJ)after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once (AK)to bear the sins of (AL)many, will appear (AM)a second time, (AN)not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly (AO)waiting for him.

Christ's Sacrifice Once for All

10 For since the law has but (AP)a shadow (AQ)of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, (AR)it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? But (AS)in these sacrifices (AT)there is a reminder of sins every year. For (AU)it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Consequently, (AV)when Christ[e] came into the world, he said,

(AW)“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,
    but a body have you prepared for me;
in burnt offerings and sin offerings
    you have taken no pleasure.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,
    as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”

When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in (AX)sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, (AY)“Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will (AZ)we have been sanctified through the offering of (BA)the body of Jesus Christ (BB)once for all.

11 And every priest stands (BC)daily at his service, (BD)offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, (BE)which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ[f] had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he (BF)sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time (BG)until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering (BH)he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

16 (BI)“This is the covenant that I will make with them
    after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
    and write them on their minds,”

17 then he adds,

(BJ)“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

11 But when Christ appeared as a (A)high priest of the (B)good things [a]having come, He entered through (C)the greater and more perfect [b]tabernacle, (D)not made by hands, that is, (E)not of this creation; 12 and not through (F)the blood of goats and calves, but (G)through His own blood, He (H)entered the holy place (I)once for all time, [c]having obtained (J)eternal redemption. 13 For if (K)the blood of goats and bulls, and (L)the [d]ashes of a heifer sprinkling those who have been defiled, sanctify for the [e]cleansing of the flesh, 14 how much more will (M)the blood of Christ, who through [f](N)the eternal Spirit (O)offered Himself without blemish to God, (P)cleanse your conscience from (Q)dead works to serve (R)the living God?

15 For this reason (S)He is the (T)mediator of a (U)new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the violations that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been (V)called may (W)receive the promise of (X)the eternal inheritance. 16 For where there is a [g]covenant, there must of necessity [h]be the death of the one who made it. 17 For a [i]covenant is valid only when people are dead, [j]for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. 18 Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. 19 For when every commandment had been (Y)spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, (Z)he took the (AA)blood of the calves and the goats, with (AB)water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both (AC)the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “(AD)This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you.” 21 And in the same way he (AE)sprinkled both the [k]tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. 22 And (AF)almost all things are cleansed with blood, according to the Law, and (AG)without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

23 Therefore it was necessary for the (AH)copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these things, but (AI)the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ (AJ)did not enter a holy place made by hands, a mere copy of (AK)the true one, but into (AL)heaven itself, now (AM)to appear in the presence of God for us; 25 nor was it that He would offer Himself often, as (AN)the high priest enters (AO)the Holy Place (AP)year by year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since (AQ)the foundation of the world; but now (AR)once at (AS)the consummation of the ages He has been (AT)revealed to put away sin [l](AU)by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 And just as (AV)it is destined for people to die once, and after this (AW)comes judgment, 28 so Christ also, having been (AX)offered once to (AY)bear the sins of many, will appear (AZ)a second time for (BA)salvation (BB)without reference to sin, to those who (BC)eagerly await Him.

One Sacrifice of Christ Is Sufficient

10 For the Law, since it has only (BD)a shadow of (BE)the good things to come and not the [m]form of those things itself, [n]can (BF)never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually every year, (BG)make those who approach perfect. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had (BH)consciousness of sins? But (BI)in [o]those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. For it is (BJ)impossible for the (BK)blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, (BL)when He comes into the world, He says,

(BM)You have not desired sacrifice and offering,
But (BN)You have prepared a body for Me;
(BO)You have not taken pleasure in whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin.
(BP)Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come
(It is written of Me in (BQ)the scroll of the book)
To do Your will, O God.’”

After saying above, “(BR)Sacrifices and offerings and (BS)whole burnt offerings and offerings (BT)for sin You have not desired, nor have You taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law), then He [p]said, “(BU)Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second. 10 By [q]this will, we have been (BV)sanctified through (BW)the offering of (BX)the body of Jesus Christ (BY)once for all time.

11 Every priest stands daily ministering and (BZ)offering time after time the same sacrifices, which (CA)can never take away sins; 12 but He, having offered one sacrifice (CB)for [r]sins (CC)for all time, (CD)sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time onward (CE)until His enemies are made a footstool for His feet. 14 For by one offering He has (CF)perfected (CG)for all time those who are [s]sanctified. 15 And (CH)the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,

16 (CI)This is the covenant which I will make with them
After those days, declares the Lord:
I will put My laws upon their hearts,
And write them on their mind,”

He then says,

17 (CJ)And their sins and their lawless deeds
I will no longer remember.”

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, an offering for sin is no longer required.
