信心的伟人
11 信，是对所盼望的事有把握，对看不见的事有确据。 2 古人因着这信曾受到了赞许。
3 因着信，我们明白宇宙[a]是藉着神的话语形成的，从而明白那看得见的事是从看不见的事造出来的。
4 因着信，亚伯向神献上的祭物比该隐所献的更好，就藉着信受到了赞许成为义人，因为神赞许他的礼物。他虽然死了，但藉着信仍然说话。
5 因着信，以诺被接去而没有经历死亡，人也找不到他，因为神把他接去了。[b]原来他被接去以前，已经蒙神喜悦而受到赞许。 6 没有信，就不可能蒙神喜悦，因为来到神面前的人，必须相信神存在，并且相信他报偿那些寻求他的人。
7 因着信，挪亚在那还看不见的事上得了神的指示，就动了敬畏的心，建造了一只方舟，以至于他的家人获救。藉着信，他定了世界的罪，自己也继承了从信而来的义。
8 因着信，亚伯拉罕蒙召的时候，就顺从出发，往他将要得为继业的地方去。他出发的时候，还不知道往哪里去。 9 因着信，他做为外人客居在应许之地，住在帐幕里，与同一个应许的共同继承人以撒、雅各一样， 10 因为他等待着那座有根基的城；那城是神所设计、所建造的。
11 同样因着信，不能生育的撒拉，自己虽然过了年龄，还是领受了怀孕生子的能力，原来她认为向她应许的那一位[c]是信实的。 12 所以从一个如同已经死了的人，就生出了许多人，像天空的星那样众多，像海边的沙那样无法数算。
13 这些人都怀着信仰死去，没有得到那些所应许的，却远远地看见[d]并且欢迎它们，又承认自己在地上是异乡人，是寄居的。 14 实际上，说这样话的人，是表明他们在寻求一个家乡。 15 如果他们真是想念自己所离开的地方，他们还有机会回去； 16 但如今，他们所向往的是一个更美好的，就是在天上的家乡。因此，神被称为“他们的神”并不以为耻；原来他已经为他们预备了一座城。
17 因着信，亚伯拉罕在受考验的时候，献上了以撒；这位领受了各样应许的人，献上了自己的独生儿子—— 18 关于这儿子，神曾经说过：“从以撒生的，将被称为你的后裔。”[e] 19 亚伯拉罕认为，神真的能使人从死人中复活。故此，用比喻来说，他真的从死人中得回了以撒。

23 因着信，摩西出生以后，被父母藏了三个月，原来他们看见孩子俊美；他们不怕王的命令。 24 因着信，摩西长大以后，拒绝被称为法老女儿的儿子。 25 他宁愿选择与神的子民同受虐待，也不愿享受暂时的罪中之乐。 26 他把为基督受的责骂看做是比埃及的财宝更大的财富，因为他注目那将来的报偿。
27 因着信，他不怕王的愤怒，离开了埃及，因为他恒心忍耐，如同看见了不可见的那一位。 28 因着信，他立[g]了逾越节和洒血的礼，免得那毁灭长子[h]的碰以色列人[i]。 29 因着信，他们走过了红海，像走过干地那样；埃及人试着这样做，就被吞灭了。
30 因着信，他们围绕耶利哥城七天，城墙就倒塌了。 31 因着信，妓女瑞荷在平安中接纳了侦察的人，没有和那些不肯信从的人一同灭亡。
32 我还要再说什么呢？如果我一一述说基甸、巴拉克、参孙、耶弗达、大卫、撒母耳和先知们的事，时间就不够了。 33 他们藉着信，征服了列国，行了公义，获得了那些应许；他们堵住了狮子的口， 34 灭了烈火的威力，逃脱了刀剑的锋刃，从软弱中得以刚强，在战争中得以强大，击败了外国的军队。 35 有些妇女得回了那些从死人中复活的亲人；有些人受酷刑至死也不肯接受释放，为要得到更美好的复活； 36 另有些人经受了戏弄、鞭打的试炼；还有些人受了捆锁、监禁的试炼； 37 他们被石头砸死，被锯成两截，[j]被刀剑杀死，披着绵羊、山羊的皮四处漂泊，遭受穷困、患难和虐待。 38 他们是这世界不配有的。他们在旷野、山岭、岩穴、地洞中漂流无定。
39 这些人虽然都藉着信受到了赞许，还是没有领受到所应许的， 40 因为神为我们预备了更美好的事，使他们没有我们，就不能得以完全。

Exempel på människor med tro
11 Tron är en övertygelse om det vi hoppas, en visshet om det som ännu inte kan ses. 2 Genom sin tro fick förfäderna sitt vittnesbörd.
3 Genom tro förstår vi att världen skapades genom ord från Gud, och att det vi ser inte har blivit till av något synligt.
4 Genom tro kunde Abel bära fram ett större offer än Kain och fick genom tro vittnesbördet att han var rättfärdig. Gud vittnade ju själv om hans offer. Genom tro talar han fortfarande, trots att han är död.[a]
5 Genom tro rycktes Henok upp utan att behöva dö. Man kunde inte hitta honom längre, för Gud tog bort honom.[b] Innan dess hade Henok nämligen fått vittnesbördet att han behagade Gud. 6 Utan tro är det omöjligt att behaga Gud. Den som vill komma till honom måste ju tro att han finns och att han belönar dem som söker honom.
7 I tro byggde Noa, efter att ha fått en varning för det som ännu inte syntes, i helig fruktan en ark för att rädda sin familj. Genom hans tro dömdes världen, och han fick själv del av den rättfärdighet som kommer av tro.[c]
8 I tro lydde Abraham när han blev kallad att dra ut till det land han skulle få ärva. Han gav sig iväg utan att veta vart han skulle komma.[d] 9 I tro bosatte han sig sedan som en främling i det utlovade landet. Han bodde i tält, och likadant gjorde Isak och Jakob, som båda hade fått del i samma löfte. 10 Han såg nämligen fram emot den stad som är byggd på en fast grund och som har Gud själv till arkitekt och byggmästare.
11 Genom tro fick Abraham kraft att bli far, trots att han, liksom hans hustru Sara, nu var alldeles för gammal. Han litade på honom som hade gett löftet.[e] 12 Därför fick denne ende man, som dessutom var så gott som död, så många efterkommande att de var lika omöjliga att räkna som stjärnorna på himlen eller sanden på havsstranden.[f]
13 Alla dessa dog i tro, utan att ha fått det som var utlovat. De hade bara sett det i fjärran, hälsat det och bekänt sig vara gäster och främlingar på jorden. 14 De som talar så, visar att de söker ett hemland. 15 Om de hade tänkt på det land de kom ifrån, hade de ju kunnat återvända dit, 16 men de längtade till ett bättre land, det land som finns i himlen. Därför skäms inte Gud för att kallas deras Gud, för han har byggt en stad åt dem.
17 I tro bar Abraham fram sin son Isak som offer, när han sattes på prov. Han var beredd att offra sin ende[g] son, han som fått löftena. 18 Gud hade ju sagt till honom: ”Det är bara Isaks efterkommande som ska räknas som dina ättlingar.”[h] 19 Men Abraham tänkte att Gud till och med kunde uppväcka döda. Och bildligt talat fick han ju tillbaka Isak från de döda.
20 I tro välsignade Isak också Jakob och Esau för framtiden.
21 I tro välsignade den döende Jakob Josefs söner. Lutad mot sin stav tillbad han Gud.
22 I tro påminde Josef, när hans slut närmade sig, om israeliternas uttåg ur Egypten och gav order om sina kvarlevor.
23 I tro lyckades Moses föräldrar gömma sitt nyfödda barn under tre månader. De såg att det var ett vackert barn och var inte rädda, trots kungens påbud.
24 I tro vägrade sedan Mose som vuxen att bli kallad son till faraos dotter. 25 Han valde att lida tillsammans med Guds folk, i stället för att under en kort tid njuta av synden. 26 Han betraktade smäleken för Kristus skull som en större rikedom än Egyptens skatter. Han såg fram emot den belöning som väntade honom. 27 I tro lämnade Mose sedan Egypten. Han var inte rädd för kungens vrede, utan höll ut, eftersom han liksom såg den Osynlige.[i] 28 I tro firade han påsk och strök blod på dörrposterna, så att den som skulle döda de förstfödda inte skulle röra vid dem.[j]
29 I tro gick folket rakt igenom Röda havet som på torra land. Men när egypterna försökte göra det, drunknade de allihop.[k]
30 Genom tron föll Jerikos murar, sedan man hade gått runt dem i sju dagar.[l]
31 Genom tron slapp den prostituerade Rachav att dödas tillsammans med de andra som vägrade att tro, eftersom hon fredligt hade tagit emot spionerna.[m]
32 Behöver jag göra listan längre? Det skulle ta alltför lång tid att berätta om Gideon, Barak, Simson och Jefta, om David, och om Samuel och profeterna. 33 Genom sin tro kunde dessa människor besegra andra riken, främja rättfärdighet, och få det som utlovats. De kunde stänga till lejonens gap, 34 släcka rasande eld, och undgå att dödas av svärd. Trots sin svaghet blev de starka, och de fick kraft att strida och driva hela arméer på flykten. 35 Kvinnor fick tillbaka sina döda uppståndna. Andra torterades till döds och ville inte bli frisläppta, för de såg fram emot en bättre uppståndelse. 36 En del blev hånade och piskade, andra kedjades fast och fick sitta i fängelse. 37 De stenades till döds, sågades mitt itu eller dödades med svärd. De gick omkring klädda i fårskinn och gethudar. De led brist, blev förföljda och misshandlade. 38 Världen förtjänade inte att ha dem ibland sig. De höll till i ödemarken och bland bergen, i grottor och jordhålor.
39 Men ingen av dessa fick se löftet uppfyllt, trots att de alla genom sin tro hade fått Guds vittnesbörd. 40 Gud hade nämligen en bättre plan för oss, så att de inte ska uppnå fullkomlighet förrän tillsammans med oss.

11 Now faith is the [a]substance of things hoped for, the [b]evidence (A)of things not seen. 2 For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.
3 By faith we understand that (B)the [c]worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

4 By faith (D)Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still (E)speaks.

19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.

3 เป็นเพราะเราไว้วางใจนี่เอง เราถึงได้เข้าใจว่า พระเจ้าสร้างจักรวาลนี้ขึ้นมาโดยคำสั่งของพระองค์ ดังนั้นสิ่งที่มองเห็นจึงเกิดมาจากสิ่งที่มองไม่เห็น
4 เป็นเพราะอาเบลไว้วางใจนี่เอง เขาถึงได้นำเครื่องบูชาที่ดีกว่าของคาอินมาถวายพระเจ้า และเพราะเขาไว้วางใจแบบนั้น พระเจ้าถึงได้ยกย่องเขาว่าเป็นคนที่ทำตามใจพระองค์ และยอมรับของถวายของเขา เป็นเพราะเขาไว้วางใจนี่เอง ถึงแม้เขาจะตายไปแล้ว เขาก็ยังพูดอยู่
5 เป็นเพราะเอโนคไว้วางใจนี่เอง พระเจ้าถึงได้รับเขาขึ้นไปอยู่กับพระองค์ ดังนั้น เอโนคจึงไม่เคยตาย และไม่มีใครหาเขาเจออีกเลย เพราะพระเจ้าได้รับเขาไปแล้ว แต่ก่อนที่พระองค์จะรับเขาขึ้นไปนั้น 6 เขาได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นคนหนึ่งที่พระเจ้าพอใจ แต่ถ้าไม่มีความไว้วางใจแล้ว ก็เป็นไปไม่ได้ที่จะทำให้พระเจ้าพอใจ เพราะคนที่มาเข้าเฝ้าพระเจ้าจะต้องเชื่อว่าพระองค์มีจริง และต้องเชื่อว่าพระองค์จะให้รางวัลกับทุกคนที่แสวงหาพระองค์
7 เป็นเพราะโนอาห์ไว้วางใจนี่เอง เมื่อพระเจ้าเตือนเขาให้รู้ถึงเหตุการณ์ที่ยังมองไม่เห็น เขาก็เคารพยำเกรงพระเจ้า และได้ต่อเรือใหญ่เพื่อช่วยชีวิตคนในครอบครัวของเขา เพราะเขามีความไว้วางใจนี่เอง เขาถึงเป็นผู้ที่ทำให้เห็นว่าโลกนี้ผิด และพระเจ้าได้ยอมรับเขาแบบที่พระองค์ได้ยอมรับคนที่ไว้วางใจพระองค์
8 เป็นเพราะอับราฮัมไว้วางใจนี่เอง เมื่อพระเจ้าเรียกเขาออกเดินทางไปที่แผ่นดินที่เขาจะได้รับเป็นมรดก เขาก็เชื่อฟังและออกเดินทางไป แม้ไม่รู้ว่ากำลังจะไปไหน 9 เป็นเพราะอับราฮัมไว้วางใจนี่เอง เขาถึงได้มาอยู่อย่างคนต่างด้าวในแผ่นดินที่พระเจ้าสัญญาไว้ เขาได้พักอยู่ในเต็นท์เหมือนกับอิสอัคและยาโคบลูกหลานของเขา ผู้ที่จะได้รับมรดกร่วมกันกับอับราฮัมตามสัญญาอันเดียวกันที่พระเจ้าให้นั้น 10 ที่อับราฮัมทำอย่างนี้ ก็เพราะเขากำลังรอคอยเมือง[a]ที่มีรากฐานมั่นคงถาวร เป็นเมืองที่พระเจ้าออกแบบและสร้างเอง
11 เป็นเพราะอับราฮัมไว้วางใจนี่เอง เขาถึงเชื่อว่าพระเจ้าซื่อสัตย์และจะทำตามสัญญา พระเจ้าถึงให้อับราฮัมมีลูกได้ ถึงแม้ว่าตัวเขาเองจะแก่เกินกว่าที่จะมีลูกได้แล้ว และซาราห์เองก็เป็นหมัน 12 ด้วยเหตุนี้ จากชายคนเดียวกันนี้ที่มีสภาพเหมือนกับคนที่ตายไปแล้ว ยังสามารถที่จะมีลูกหลานเกิดขึ้นมากมายเท่ากับดวงดาวในท้องฟ้า และมากมายเท่ากับเม็ดทรายบนฝั่งทะเลที่นับไม่ถ้วน
13 คนพวกนี้ทั้งหมดตายไปในขณะที่ยังไว้วางใจอยู่ ถึงแม้พวกเขายังไม่ได้รับสิ่งที่พระเจ้าได้สัญญาไว้ เพียงแค่ได้เห็นแต่ไกลและยินดีต้อนรับสิ่งที่พระเจ้าได้สัญญานั้นไว้ พวกเขายังยอมรับอีกว่าตัวพวกเขาเองเป็นแค่คนแปลกหน้าและคนต่างด้าวในโลกนี้ 14 ที่เขาพูดอย่างนี้แสดงว่าพวกเขากำลังแสวงหาบ้านเมืองที่จะเป็นของเขาเอง 15 ถ้าพวกเขาคิดถึงบ้านเมืองที่พวกเขาจากมา เขาก็ยังมีโอกาสที่จะกลับไปได้ 16 แต่พวกเขากำลังใฝ่ฝันถึงบ้านเมืองที่ดีกว่านั้น คือเมืองแห่งสวรรค์ พระเจ้าถึงไม่อับอายที่ได้ชื่อว่าเป็นพระเจ้าของพวกเขา เพราะพระองค์ได้เตรียมบ้านเมืองไว้สำหรับพวกเขาแล้ว
17-18 เป็นเพราะอับราฮัมไว้วางใจนี่เอง เมื่อพระเจ้ามาลองใจเขา เขาก็ได้ถวายอิสอัคลูกชายเพียงคนเดียวเป็นเครื่องบูชา เรื่องนี้เกิดขึ้นหลังจากที่พระเจ้าได้สัญญากับอับราฮัมว่า “ลูกหลานของเจ้าจะสืบเชื้อสายมาจากอิสอัค”(A) อับราฮัมรับคำสัญญาแล้ว แต่ก็ยังพร้อมที่จะถวายลูกชายเพียงคนเดียว 19 เพราะอับราฮัมถือว่าพระเจ้าสามารถทำให้คนตายฟื้นขึ้นมาได้ อาจจะพูดได้ว่า เขาก็ได้รับอิสอัคกลับคืนมาจากความตาย
20 เป็นเพราะอิสอัคไว้วางใจนี่เอง เขาถึงได้ให้พรกับทั้งยาโคบและเอซาว แก่สิ่งที่จะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคต
21 เป็นเพราะยาโคบไว้วางใจนี่เอง เมื่อเขากำลังจะตาย เขาถึงได้ให้พรกับลูกทั้งสองคนของโยเซฟ และได้นมัสการพระเจ้าขณะที่พิงอยู่ที่ปลายไม้เท้าของเขา
22 เป็นเพราะโยเซฟไว้วางใจนี่เอง ในบั้นปลายชีวิตเขาได้พูดถึงเรื่องที่ประชาชนอิสราเอลจะอพยพออกจากอียิปต์ และสั่งเสียให้เอากระดูกของเขาไปด้วย
23 เป็นเพราะพ่อแม่ของโมเสสไว้วางใจนี่เอง เมื่อโมเสสเกิดมา พวกเขาถึงได้ซ่อนตัวเด็กไว้ถึงสามเดือน เพราะพ่อแม่เห็นว่าเขาเป็นเด็กที่มีหน้าตาโดดเด่น และพวกเขากล้าขัดคำสั่งของกษัตริย์
24 เป็นเพราะโมเสสไว้วางใจนี่เอง เมื่อเขาโตขึ้น เขาถึงได้ยอมสละฐานะลูกของลูกสาวฟาโรห์ 25 เขาเลือกที่จะถูกกดขี่ข่มเหงร่วมกับประชาชนของพระเจ้า แทนที่จะมีความสนุกสนานชั่วคราวกับความบาป 26 เขาถือว่าความอับอายขายหน้าเพื่อพระคริสต์ มีค่ามากกว่าทรัพย์สมบัติของประเทศอียิปต์ เพราะเขามองไปข้างหน้าถึงรางวัลที่จะได้รับ 27 เป็นเพราะโมเสสไว้วางใจนี่เอง เขาถึงได้ออกจากประเทศอียิปต์โดยไม่เกรงกลัวความโกรธของฟาโรห์ เขามีใจมานะอดทนราวกับว่าเขาได้เห็นพระเจ้าผู้ที่ไม่สามารถมองเห็นได้ 28 เป็นเพราะโมเสสไว้วางใจนี่เอง เขาถึงได้จัดตั้งเทศกาลวันปลดปล่อย และสั่งให้ประพรมเลือดที่ประตู เพื่อไม่ให้ทูตแห่งความตาย[b]มาแตะต้องลูกชายหัวปีของประชาชนอิสราเอล
29 เป็นเพราะคนอิสราเอลไว้วางใจนี่เอง พวกเขาถึงได้เดินข้ามทะเลแดงเหมือนกับเดินอยู่บนพื้นดินแห้ง แต่เมื่อพวกอียิปต์พยายามที่จะทำอย่างนั้นบ้าง พวกเขาก็จมน้ำตายหมด
30 เป็นเพราะคนอิสราเอลไว้วางใจนี่เอง หลังจากที่พวกเขาเดินรอบกำแพงเมืองเยริโคเป็นเวลาเจ็ดวัน กำแพงนั้นก็พังลงมา
31 เป็นเพราะราหับหญิงโสเภณีไว้วางใจนี่เอง เธอถึงไม่ถูกฆ่าตายไปพร้อมๆกับคนที่ไม่เชื่อฟังพวกนั้น เพราะเธอได้ต้อนรับและช่วยคนสอดแนมอย่างเป็นมิตร
32 จะให้พูดอะไรมากกว่านี้อีกหรือ มีเวลาไม่พอที่จะเล่าถึงเรื่องกิเดโอน บาราค แซมสัน เยฟธาห์ ดาวิด ซามูเอล และพวกผู้พูดแทนพระเจ้า 33 เป็นเพราะพวกเขาไว้วางใจนี่เอง พวกเขาเหล่านี้ถึงได้รับชัยชนะเหนือดินแดนต่างๆและได้ทำสิ่งที่ถูกต้องยุติธรรม และได้รับสิ่งต่างๆที่พระเจ้าสัญญาไว้ และได้ปิดปากสิงโต 34 พวกเขาได้ดับไฟที่โหมไหม้อย่างรุนแรง และรอดตายจากคมดาบ เขาได้รับกำลังจากพระเจ้าเมื่ออ่อนแอ และมีกำลังในสนามรบ และขับไล่กองทัพต่างชาติให้แตกกระเจิดกระเจิงไป 35 พวกผู้หญิงก็ได้รับคนที่เขารักนั้นกลับฟื้นขึ้นจากความตาย บางคนก็ยอมถูกทรมานจนตาย ไม่ยอมออกมาจากคุก เพื่อที่จะได้ฟื้นขึ้นจากความตายอย่างถาวรไม่ใช่แค่ชั่วคราว 36 บางคนต้องทนถูกเยาะเย้ยและถูกเฆี่ยนด้วยแส้ ในขณะที่บางคนถูกล่ามโซ่และถูกขังคุก 37 บางคนโดนหินขว้าง บางคนถูกเลื่อยออกเป็นสองท่อน บางคนถูกดาบฟัน บางคนยากจนขัดสน บางคนร่อนเร่พเนจรนุ่งหนังแพะหนังแกะ ถูกกดขี่ข่มเหง และถูกทารุณอย่างไม่ยุติธรรม 38 โลกนี้ไม่คู่ควรกับคนพวกนี้เลย พวกเขาร่อนเร่ไปตามที่เปล่าเปลี่ยวและภูเขา อยู่ตามถ้ำตามโพรงในพื้นดิน
39 พวกเขาทุกคนได้รับการยกย่อง เพราะพวกเขาได้ไว้วางใจ แต่พวกเขาก็ยังไม่ได้รับสิ่งที่พระเจ้าได้สัญญาไว้ 40 พระเจ้าได้วางแผนที่จะให้สิ่งที่ดียิ่งกว่านั้นสำหรับเรา เพราะพวกเขาจะสมบูรณ์แบบได้ก็ต่อเมื่อมีเรารวมอยู่ด้วยเท่านั้น
