信心的伟人

11 信，是对所盼望的事有把握，对看不见的事有确据。 2 古人因着这信曾受到了赞许。

3 因着信，我们明白宇宙[a]是藉着神的话语形成的，从而明白那看得见的事是从看不见的事造出来的。

4 因着信，亚伯向神献上的祭物比该隐所献的更好，就藉着信受到了赞许成为义人，因为神赞许他的礼物。他虽然死了，但藉着信仍然说话。

5 因着信，以诺被接去而没有经历死亡，人也找不到他，因为神把他接去了。[b]原来他被接去以前，已经蒙神喜悦而受到赞许。 6 没有信，就不可能蒙神喜悦，因为来到神面前的人，必须相信神存在，并且相信他报偿那些寻求他的人。

7 因着信，挪亚在那还看不见的事上得了神的指示，就动了敬畏的心，建造了一只方舟，以至于他的家人获救。藉着信，他定了世界的罪，自己也继承了从信而来的义。

8 因着信，亚伯拉罕蒙召的时候，就顺从出发，往他将要得为继业的地方去。他出发的时候，还不知道往哪里去。 9 因着信，他做为外人客居在应许之地，住在帐幕里，与同一个应许的共同继承人以撒、雅各一样， 10 因为他等待着那座有根基的城；那城是神所设计、所建造的。

11 同样因着信，不能生育的撒拉，自己虽然过了年龄，还是领受了怀孕生子的能力，原来她认为向她应许的那一位[c]是信实的。 12 所以从一个如同已经死了的人，就生出了许多人，像天空的星那样众多，像海边的沙那样无法数算。

13 这些人都怀着信仰死去，没有得到那些所应许的，却远远地看见[d]并且欢迎它们，又承认自己在地上是异乡人，是寄居的。 14 实际上，说这样话的人，是表明他们在寻求一个家乡。 15 如果他们真是想念自己所离开的地方，他们还有机会回去； 16 但如今，他们所向往的是一个更美好的，就是在天上的家乡。因此，神被称为“他们的神”并不以为耻；原来他已经为他们预备了一座城。

17 因着信，亚伯拉罕在受考验的时候，献上了以撒；这位领受了各样应许的人，献上了自己的独生儿子—— 18 关于这儿子，神曾经说过：“从以撒生的，将被称为你的后裔。”[e] 19 亚伯拉罕认为，神真的能使人从死人中复活。故此，用比喻来说，他真的从死人中得回了以撒。

20 同样因着信，以撒指着将来的事祝福了雅各和以扫。 21 因着信，雅各临死的时候，祝福了约瑟的每个儿子，又倚着自己的杖头敬拜神[f]。 22 因着信，约瑟临终的时候，提到以色列子民出埃及的事，也为自己的骸骨留下了遗言。

23 因着信，摩西出生以后，被父母藏了三个月，原来他们看见孩子俊美；他们不怕王的命令。 24 因着信，摩西长大以后，拒绝被称为法老女儿的儿子。 25 他宁愿选择与神的子民同受虐待，也不愿享受暂时的罪中之乐。 26 他把为基督受的责骂看做是比埃及的财宝更大的财富，因为他注目那将来的报偿。

27 因着信，他不怕王的愤怒，离开了埃及，因为他恒心忍耐，如同看见了不可见的那一位。 28 因着信，他立[g]了逾越节和洒血的礼，免得那毁灭长子[h]的碰以色列人[i]。 29 因着信，他们走过了红海，像走过干地那样；埃及人试着这样做，就被吞灭了。

30 因着信，他们围绕耶利哥城七天，城墙就倒塌了。 31 因着信，妓女瑞荷在平安中接纳了侦察的人，没有和那些不肯信从的人一同灭亡。

32 我还要再说什么呢？如果我一一述说基甸、巴拉克、参孙、耶弗达、大卫、撒母耳和先知们的事，时间就不够了。 33 他们藉着信，征服了列国，行了公义，获得了那些应许；他们堵住了狮子的口， 34 灭了烈火的威力，逃脱了刀剑的锋刃，从软弱中得以刚强，在战争中得以强大，击败了外国的军队。 35 有些妇女得回了那些从死人中复活的亲人；有些人受酷刑至死也不肯接受释放，为要得到更美好的复活； 36 另有些人经受了戏弄、鞭打的试炼；还有些人受了捆锁、监禁的试炼； 37 他们被石头砸死，被锯成两截，[j]被刀剑杀死，披着绵羊、山羊的皮四处漂泊，遭受穷困、患难和虐待。 38 他们是这世界不配有的。他们在旷野、山岭、岩穴、地洞中漂流无定。

39 这些人虽然都藉着信受到了赞许，还是没有领受到所应许的， 40 因为神为我们预备了更美好的事，使他们没有我们，就不能得以完全。

11 Or la fede è certezza di cose che si sperano, dimostrazione di cose che non si vedono;

2 infatti per mezzo di essa gli antichi ricevettero testimonianza.

3 Per fede intendiamo che l'universo è stato formato per mezzo della parola di Dio, sí che le cose che si vedono non vennero all'esistenza da cose apparenti.

4 Per fede Abele offrí a Dio un sacrificio piú eccellente di quello di Caino; per essa egli ricevette la testimonianza che era giusto, quando Dio attestò di gradire le sue offerte; e per mezzo di essa benché morto, egli parla ancora.

5 Per fede Enok fu trasferito in cielo perché non vedesse la morte, e non fu piú trovato perché Dio lo aveva trasferito; prima infatti di essere portato via, egli ricevette la testimonianza che era piaciuto a Dio.

6 Ora senza fede è impossibile piacergli, perché chi si accosta a Dio deve credere che egli è, e che egli è il rimuneratore di quelli che lo cercano.

7 Per fede Noè, avvertito divinamente di cose che ancora non si vedevano e mosso da santo timore, preparò per la salvezza della sua famiglia l'arca, mediante la quale condannò il mondo e divenne erede della giustizia che si ottiene mediante la fede.

8 Per fede Abrahamo, quando fu chiamato, ubbidí per andarsene verso il luogo che doveva ricevere in eredità; e partí non sapendo dove andava.

9 Per fede Abrahamo dimorò nella terra promessa, come in paese straniero, abitando in tende con Isacco e Giacobbe, eredi con lui della stessa promessa,

10 perché aspettava la città che ha i fondamenti, il cui architetto e costruttore è Dio.

11 Per fede anche Sara stessa, benché avesse oltrepassato l'età, ricevette forza per concepire il seme e partorì perché ritenne fedele colui che aveva fatto la promessa.

12 Perciò da un sol uomo, e questi come fosse morto, sono nati discendenti numerosi come le stelle del cielo e come la sabbia lungo la riva del mare, che non si può contare.

13 Tutti costoro sono morti nella fede, senza aver ricevuto le cose promesse ma, vedutele da lontano, essi ne furono persuasi e le accolsero con gioia, confessando di essere forestieri e pellegrini sulla terra.

14 Coloro infatti che dicono tali cose dimostrano che cercano una patria.

15 E se avessero veramente avuto in mente quella da cui erano usciti, avrebbero avuto il tempo per ritornarvi.

16 Ma ora ne desiderano una migliore, cioè quella celeste; perciò Dio non si vergogna di essere chiamato il loro Dio, perché ha preparato loro una città.

17 Per fede Abrahamo, messo alla prova, offrí Isacco e colui che aveva ricevuto le promesse offrí il suo unigenito

18 anche se Dio gli aveva detto «In Isacco avrai una discendenza che porterà il tuo nome»,

19 perché Abrahamo riteneva che Dio era potente da risuscitarlo anche dai morti; per cui lo riebbe come per una specie di risurrezione.

20 Per fede Isacco benedisse Giacobbe ed Esaù, riguardo a cose future.

21 Per fede Giacobbe, morente, benedisse ciascuno dei figli di Giuseppe e adorò, appoggiato alla sommità del suo bastone.

22 Per fede Giuseppe, quando stava per morire, fece menzione dell'esodo dei figli d'Israele e diede ordini riguardo alle sue ossa.

23 Per fede Mosé, quando nacque, fu nascosto per tre mesi dai suoi genitori, perché essi videro che il bambino era bello e non temettero l'ordine del re.

24 Per fede Mosé, divenuto adulto, rifiutò di essere chiamato figlio della figlia del Faraone

25 scegliendo piuttosto di essere maltrattato col popolo di Dio che di godere per breve tempo i piaceri del peccato,

26 stimando il vituperio di Cristo ricchezza maggiore dei tesori di Egitto, perché aveva lo sguardo rivolto alla ricompensa.

27 Per fede lasciò l'Egitto senza temere l'ira del re, perché rimase fermo come se vedesse colui che è invisibile.

28 Per fede celebrò la Pasqua e fece l'aspersione del sangue, affinché colui che distruggeva i primogeniti non toccasse quelli d'Israele.

29 Per fede passarono il Mar Rosso come se attraversassero una terra asciutta, quando invece gli Egiziani tentarono di fare ciò, furono inghiottiti.

30 Per fede caddero le mura di Gerico, dopo che vi avevano girato attorno per sette giorni.

31 Per fede Rahab, la prostituta, non perí con gli increduli, perché aveva accolto in pace le spie.

32 E che dirò di piú? Infatti mi mancherebbe il tempo se volessi raccontare di Gedeone, di Barak, di Sansone, di Iefte, di Davide, di Samuele e dei profeti,

33 i quali per fede vinsero regni, praticarono la giustizia, conseguirono le promesse, turarono le gole dei leoni,

34 spensero la forza del fuoco, scamparono al taglio della spada, trassero forza dalla debolezza, divennero forti in guerra, misero in fuga gli eserciti stranieri.

35 Le donne riebbero per risurrezione i loro morti altri invece furono distesi sulla ruota e martoriati, non accettando la liberazione, per ottenere una migliore risurrezione.

36 Altri ancora subirono scherni e flagelli, e anche catene e prigionia.

37 Furono lapidati, segati, tentati, morirono uccisi di spada, andarono in giro coperti di pelli di pecora e di capra, bisognosi, afflitti, maltrattati

38 (il mondo non era degno di loro), erranti per deserti e monti, in spelonche e grotte della terra.

39 Eppure tutti costoro, pur avendo avuto buona testimonianza mediante la fede, non ottennero la promessa,

40 perché Dio aveva provveduto per noi qualcosa di meglio, affinché essi non giungessero alla perfezione senza di noi.

11 Ora, a fé é o firme fundamento das coisas que se esperam e a prova das coisas que se não veem. 2 Porque, por ela, os antigos alcançaram testemunho. 3 Pela fé, entendemos que os mundos, pela palavra de Deus, foram criados; de maneira que aquilo que se vê não foi feito do que é aparente.

4 Pela fé, Abel ofereceu a Deus maior sacrifício do que Caim, pelo qual alcançou testemunho de que era justo, dando Deus testemunho dos seus dons, e, por ela, depois de morto, ainda fala. 5 Pela fé, Enoque foi trasladado para não ver a morte e não foi achado, porque Deus o trasladara, visto como, antes da sua trasladação, alcançou testemunho de que agradara a Deus. 6 Ora, sem fé é impossível agradar-lhe, porque é necessário que aquele que se aproxima de Deus creia que ele existe e que é galardoador dos que o buscam. 7 Pela fé, Noé, divinamente avisado das coisas que ainda não se viam, temeu, e, para salvação da sua família, preparou a arca, pela qual condenou o mundo, e foi feito herdeiro da justiça que é segundo a fé.

8 Pela fé, Abraão, sendo chamado, obedeceu, indo para um lugar que havia de receber por herança; e saiu, sem saber para onde ia. 9 Pela fé, habitou na terra da promessa, como em terra alheia, morando em cabanas com Isaque e Jacó, herdeiros com ele da mesma promessa. 10 Porque esperava a cidade que tem fundamentos, da qual o artífice e construtor é Deus. 11 Pela fé, também a mesma Sara recebeu a virtude de conceber e deu à luz já fora da idade; porquanto teve por fiel aquele que lho tinha prometido. 12 Pelo que também de um, e esse já amortecido, descenderam tantos, em multidão, como as estrelas do céu, e como a areia inumerável que está na praia do mar.

13 Todos estes morreram na fé, sem terem recebido as promessas, mas, vendo-as de longe, e crendo nelas, e abraçando-as, confessaram que eram estrangeiros e peregrinos na terra. 14 Porque os que isso dizem claramente mostram que buscam uma pátria. 15 E se, na verdade, se lembrassem daquela de onde haviam saído, teriam oportunidade de tornar. 16 Mas, agora, desejam uma melhor, isto é, a celestial. Pelo que também Deus não se envergonha deles, de se chamar seu Deus, porque já lhes preparou uma cidade.

17 Pela fé, ofereceu Abraão a Isaque, quando foi provado, sim, aquele que recebera as promessas ofereceu o seu unigênito. 18 Sendo-lhe dito: Em Isaque será chamada a tua descendência, considerou que Deus era poderoso para até dos mortos o ressuscitar. 19 E daí também, em figura, ele o recobrou. 20 Pela fé, Isaque abençoou Jacó e Esaú, no tocante às coisas futuras. 21 Pela fé, Jacó, próximo da morte, abençoou cada um dos filhos de José e adorou encostado à ponta do seu bordão. 22 Pela fé, José, próximo da morte, fez menção da saída dos filhos de Israel e deu ordem acerca de seus ossos.

23 Pela fé, Moisés, já nascido, foi escondido três meses por seus pais, porque viram que era um menino formoso; e não temeram o mandamento do rei. 24 Pela fé, Moisés, sendo já grande, recusou ser chamado filho da filha de Faraó, 25 escolhendo, antes, ser maltratado com o povo de Deus do que por, um pouco de tempo, ter o gozo do pecado; 26 tendo, por maiores riquezas, o vitupério de Cristo do que os tesouros do Egito; porque tinha em vista a recompensa. 27 Pela fé, deixou o Egito, não temendo a ira do rei; porque ficou firme, como vendo o invisível. 28 Pela fé, celebrou a Páscoa e a aspersão do sangue, para que o destruidor dos primogênitos lhes não tocasse. 29 Pela fé, passaram o mar Vermelho, como por terra seca; o que intentando os egípcios, se afogaram.

30 Pela fé, caíram os muros de Jericó, sendo rodeados durante sete dias. 31 Pela fé, Raabe, a meretriz, não pereceu com os incrédulos, acolhendo em paz os espias.

32 E que mais direi? Faltar-me-ia o tempo contando de Gideão, e de Baraque, e de Sansão, e de Jefté, e de Davi, e de Samuel, e dos profetas, 33 os quais, pela fé, venceram reinos, praticaram a justiça, alcançaram promessas, fecharam as bocas dos leões, 34 apagaram a força do fogo, escaparam do fio da espada, da fraqueza tiraram forças, na batalha se esforçaram, puseram em fugida os exércitos dos estranhos. 35 As mulheres receberam, pela ressurreição, os seus mortos; uns foram torturados, não aceitando o seu livramento, para alcançarem uma melhor ressurreição; 36 E outros experimentaram escárnios e açoites, e até cadeias e prisões. 37 Foram apedrejados, serrados, tentados, mortos a fio de espada; andaram vestidos de peles de ovelhas e de cabras, desamparados, aflitos e maltratados 38 (homens dos quais o mundo não era digno), errantes pelos desertos, e montes, e pelas covas e cavernas da terra.

39 E todos estes, tendo tido testemunho pela fé, não alcançaram a promessa, 40 provendo Deus alguma coisa melhor a nosso respeito, para que eles, sem nós, não fossem aperfeiçoados.

Faith in Action

11 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for(A) and assurance about what we do not see.(B) 2 This is what the ancients were commended for.(C)

3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command,(D) so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

4 By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended(E) as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings.(F) And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.(G)

5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”[a](H) For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him(I) must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen,(J) in holy fear built an ark(K) to save his family.(L) By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.(M)

8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance,(N) obeyed and went,(O) even though he did not know where he was going. 9 By faith he made his home in the promised land(P) like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents,(Q) as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.(R) 10 For he was looking forward to the city(S) with foundations,(T) whose architect and builder is God.(U) 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age,(V) was enabled to bear children(W) because she[b] considered him faithful(X) who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead,(Y) came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.(Z)

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised;(AA) they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance,(AB) admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth.(AC) 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.(AD) 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one.(AE) Therefore God is not ashamed(AF) to be called their God,(AG) for he has prepared a city(AH) for them.

17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice.(AI) He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”[c](AJ) 19 Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead,(AK) and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.

20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau in regard to their future.(AL)

21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons,(AM) and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.

22 By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.(AN)

23 By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born,(AO) because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.(AP)

24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.(AQ) 25 He chose to be mistreated(AR) along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He regarded disgrace(AS) for the sake of Christ(AT) as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.(AU) 27 By faith he left Egypt,(AV) not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer(AW) of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.(AX)

29 By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned.(AY)

30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the army had marched around them for seven days.(AZ)

31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.[d](BA)

32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon,(BB) Barak,(BC) Samson(BD) and Jephthah,(BE) about David(BF) and Samuel(BG) and the prophets, 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms,(BH) administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions,(BI) 34 quenched the fury of the flames,(BJ) and escaped the edge of the sword;(BK) whose weakness was turned to strength;(BL) and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies.(BM) 35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again.(BN) There were others who were tortured, refusing to be released so that they might gain an even better resurrection. 36 Some faced jeers and flogging,(BO) and even chains and imprisonment.(BP) 37 They were put to death by stoning;[e](BQ) they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword.(BR) They went about in sheepskins and goatskins,(BS) destitute, persecuted and mistreated— 38 the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves(BT) and in holes in the ground.

39 These were all commended(BU) for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,(BV) 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us(BW) would they be made perfect.(BX)
