8 Allora tutto il popolo si radunò come un solo uomo sulla piazza davanti alla porta delle Acque e disse ad Esdra lo scriba di portare il libro della legge di Mosè che il Signore aveva dato a Israele. 2 Il primo giorno del settimo mese, il sacerdote Esdra portò la legge davanti all'assemblea degli uomini, delle donne e di quanti erano capaci di intendere.
3 Lesse il libro sulla piazza davanti alla porta delle Acque, dallo spuntar della luce fino a mezzogiorno, in presenza degli uomini, delle donne e di quelli che erano capaci di intendere; tutto il popolo porgeva l'orecchio a sentire il libro della legge. 4 Esdra lo scriba stava sopra una tribuna di legno, che avevano costruito per l'occorrenza e accanto a lui stavano, a destra Mattitia, Sema, Anaia, Uria, Chelkia e Maaseia; a sinistra Pedaia, Misael, Malchia, Casum, Casbaddàna, Zaccaria e Mesullàm.
5 Esdra aprì il libro in presenza di tutto il popolo, poiché stava più in alto di tutto il popolo; come ebbe aperto il libro, tutto il popolo si alzò in piedi. 6 Esdra benedisse il Signore Dio grande e tutto il popolo rispose: «Amen, amen», alzando le mani; si inginocchiarono e si prostrarono con la faccia a terra dinanzi al Signore. 7 Giosuè, Bani, Serebia, Iamin, Akkub, Sabbetài, Odia, Maaseia, Kelita, Azaria, Iozabàd, Canàn, Pelaia, leviti, spiegavano la legge al popolo e il popolo stava in piedi al suo posto.
8 Essi leggevano nel libro della legge di Dio a brani distinti e con spiegazioni del senso e così facevano comprendere la lettura. 9 Neemia, che era il governatore, Esdra sacerdote e scriba e i leviti che ammaestravano il popolo dissero a tutto il popolo: «Questo giorno è consacrato al Signore vostro Dio; non fate lutto e non piangete!». Perché tutto il popolo piangeva, mentre ascoltava le parole della legge. 10 Poi Neemia disse loro: «Andate, mangiate carni grasse e bevete vini dolci e mandate porzioni a quelli che nulla hanno di preparato, perché questo giorno è consacrato al Signore nostro; non vi rattristate, perché la gioia del Signore è la vostra forza». 11 I leviti calmavano tutto il popolo dicendo: «Tacete, perché questo giorno è santo; non vi rattristate!». 12 Tutto il popolo andò a mangiare, a bere, a mandare porzioni ai poveri e a far festa, perché avevano compreso le parole che erano state loro proclamate.
13 Il secondo giorno i capifamiglia di tutto il popolo, i sacerdoti e i leviti si radunarono presso Esdra lo scriba per esaminare le parole della legge. 14 Trovarono scritto nella legge data dal Signore per mezzo di Mosè, che gli Israeliti dovevano dimorare in capanne durante la festa del settimo mese. 15 Allora fecero sapere la cosa e pubblicarono questo bando in tutte le loro città e in Gerusalemme: «Andate al monte e portatene rami di ulivo, rami di olivastro, rami di mirto, rami di palma e rami di alberi ombrosi, per fare capanne, come sta scritto». 16 Allora il popolo andò fuori, portò i rami e si fece ciascuno la sua capanna sul tetto della propria casa, nei loro cortili, nei cortili della casa di Dio, sulla piazza della porta delle Acque e sulla piazza della porta di Efraim. 17 Così tutta la comunità di coloro che erano tornati dalla deportazione si fece capanne e dimorò nelle capanne. Nehemiah 8
International Children’s Bible
8 All the people of Israel gathered together in the square by the Water Gate. They asked Ezra the teacher to bring out the Book of the Teachings of Moses. These are the Teachings the Lord had given to Israel.
2 So Ezra the priest brought out the Teachings for the crowd. This was on the first day of the seventh month. Men, women and all who could listen and understand had gathered. 3 Ezra read the Teachings out loud. He read from early morning until noon. He was facing the square by the Water Gate. He read to the men, women and everyone who could listen and understand. All the people listened carefully to the Book of the Teachings.
4 Ezra the teacher stood on a high wooden platform. It had been built just for this time. On his right were Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah and Maaseiah. And on his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malkijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah and Meshullam.
5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was above them. As he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 Ezra praised the Lord, the great God. And all the people held up their hands and said, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
7 These Levites taught the people the Teachings as they stood there: Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan and Pelaiah. 8 They read the Book of the Teachings of God. They read so the people could understand. And they explained what it meant. Then the people understood what was being read.
9 Then Nehemiah the governor and Ezra the priest and teacher spoke up. And the Levites who were teaching spoke up. They said to all the people, “This is a holy day to the Lord your God. Don’t be sad or cry.” All the people had been crying as they listened to the words of the Teachings.
10 Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy good food and sweet drinks. Send some to people who have none. Today is a holy day to the Lord. Don’t be sad. The joy of the Lord will make you strong.”
11 The Levites helped calm the people. They said, “Be quiet. This is a holy day. Don’t be sad.”
12 Then all the people went away to eat and drink. They sent some of their food to others. And they celebrated with great joy. They finally understood what they had been taught.
13 On the second day of the month, the leaders of all the families met with Ezra the teacher. The priests and Levites also met with him. They gathered to study the words of the Teachings. 14 This is what they found written in the Teachings: The Lord had commanded through Moses that the people of Israel were to live in shelters. This was during the feast of the seventh month. 15 The people were supposed to preach this message. They were to spread it through all of their towns and in Jerusalem: “Go out into the mountains. Bring back branches from olive and wild olive trees, myrtle trees, palms and shade trees. Make shelters with them. It is written in the Law.”
16 So the people went out and got tree branches. They built shelters on their roofs[a] and in their courtyards. They built shelters in the courtyards of the Temple. And they built them in the square by the Water Gate and the square next to the Gate of Ephraim. 17 The whole group that had come back from captivity built shelters. And they lived in them. The Israelites had not done this since the time of Joshua son of Nun. And they were very happy.
18 Ezra read to them from the Book of the Teachings. He read every day, from the first day to the last. The people of Israel celebrated the feast for seven days. Then on the eighth day the people gathered as the law said.

- 8:16 roofs In Bible times houses were built with flat roofs. The roof was used for drying things such as flax and fruit. And it was used as an extra room, as a place for worship and as a place to sleep in the summer.
