9 耶路巴力的兒子亞比米勒到示劍他的母舅那裏，對他們和他外祖父全家的人說： 2 「請你們問示劍所有的居民：『是耶路巴力的眾兒子七十人都治理你們好，還是一人治理你們好呢？』你們要記得，我是你們的骨肉。」 3 他的母舅們為他把這一切話說給示劍所有的居民聽，他們的心就傾向亞比米勒，因為他們說：「他是我們的弟兄。」 4 他們從巴力‧比利土的廟中取了七十銀子給亞比米勒，亞比米勒用這些錢雇了一些無賴匪徒跟隨他。 5 他來到俄弗拉他父親的家，在一塊磐石上把他的兄弟，就是耶路巴力的七十個兒子都殺了，只剩下耶路巴力的小兒子約坦，因為他躲了起來。 6 示劍所有的居民和全伯‧米羅都聚集在一起，到示劍橡樹旁的柱子那裏，立亞比米勒為王。
7 有人將這事告訴約坦，他就去站在基利心山頂上，高聲喊叫，對他們說：「示劍的居民哪，你們要聽我， 神也就會聽你們。 8 有一次，樹木要膏一王治理他們，就去對橄欖樹說：『請你來作王治理我們！』 9 橄欖樹對它們說：『我豈可停止生產使神明和人得尊榮的油，而行走飄搖在眾樹之上呢？』 10 樹木對無花果樹說：『請你來作王治理我們！』 11 無花果樹對它們說：『我豈可停止結甜美的果子，而行走飄搖在眾樹之上呢？』 12 樹木對葡萄樹說：『請你來作王治理我們！』 13 葡萄樹對它們說：『我豈可停止出產使神明和人歡樂的新酒，而行走飄搖在眾樹之上呢？』 14 眾樹對荊棘說：『請你來作王治理我們！』 15 荊棘對眾樹說：『你們若真的要膏我作王治理你們，就要來到我的蔭下尋求庇護；不然，願火從荊棘裏出來，吞滅黎巴嫩的香柏樹。』
16 「現在你們若以誠實正直立亞比米勒為王，若善待耶路巴力和他的家，若照他手所做的回報他— 17 從前我父為你們爭戰，冒生命的危險救你們脫離米甸的手， 18 但是你們如今起來攻擊我的父家，在一塊磐石上把他的七十個兒子全殺了，又立他使女所生的兒子亞比米勒為示劍居民的王，因為他是你們的弟兄— 19 你們如今若以誠實正直對待耶路巴力和他的家，就可以因亞比米勒歡樂，他也可以因你們歡樂； 20 不然，願火從亞比米勒發出，吞滅示劍居民和伯‧米羅，又願火從示劍居民和伯‧米羅發出，吞滅亞比米勒。」 21 約坦因躲避他的兄弟亞比米勒就逃跑，去到比珥，住在那裏。

30 西布勒市長聽見以別的兒子迦勒的話，就怒氣大發。 31 他悄悄地派一些使者到亞比米勒那裏，說：「看哪，以別的兒子迦勒和他的弟兄到了示劍。看哪，他們煽動那城攻擊你。 32 現在，你和跟隨你的百姓要夜間起來，在田間埋伏。 33 早晨太陽一出，你就趁早攻城。看哪，迦勒和跟隨他的百姓出來攻擊你的時候，你就全力對付他們。」

46 示劍城樓裏所有的居民聽見了，就進入伊勒‧比利土廟的地窖裏。 47 有人告訴亞比米勒，示劍城樓裏所有的居民都聚在一起。 48 亞比米勒和所有跟隨他的百姓都上撒們山去。亞比米勒手拿斧子，砍下一根樹枝，舉起來，扛在肩上，對跟隨他的百姓說：「你們看我做甚麼，就趕快照樣做。」 49 眾百姓也都各砍一根樹枝，跟亞比米勒走，把樹枝堆在地窖上，放火燒地窖。這樣，示劍城樓裏所有的人都死了，男女約有一千。
50 亞比米勒到提備斯，對着提備斯安營，攻取了那城。 51 城中有一座堅固的樓；城裏所有的居民，無論男女，都逃到那裏，關上門，上了樓頂。 52 亞比米勒到了樓前，攻打它。他挨近樓門，要放火焚燒。 53 有一個婦人把一塊上磨石拋在亞比米勒的頭上，打破了他的頭蓋骨。 54 他就急忙叫拿他兵器的青年來，對他說：「拔出你的刀來，殺了我吧！免得有人提到我說：『他被一個婦人殺了。』」於是那青年把他刺透，他就死了。 55 以色列人見亞比米勒死了，就各回自己的地方去了。 56 這樣， 神報應了亞比米勒向他父親所做的惡事，就是殺了自己七十個兄弟。 57 示劍人的一切惡事， 神也都報應在他們頭上；耶路巴力的兒子約坦的詛咒都臨到他們身上了。

Avimelek försöker bli kung
9 En dag gick Jerubbaals son Avimelek till Shekem för att tala med sina morbröder. Han talade till dem och till hela sin mors släkt:
2 ”Gå och fråga Shekems ledare om de hellre vill ha sjuttio kungar, Jerubbaals sjuttio söner, än en enda. Tänk på mig som är av ert eget kött och blod!”
3 Hans morbröder gick då till de ledande männen i staden och lade fram Avimeleks förslag. De ansåg att eftersom han var deras släkting, så kunde de acceptera honom. 4 De gav honom sjuttio siklar silver från Baal Berits tempel och för dem anställde han en del löst folk, äventyrare som följde honom. 5 Han gick till sin fars hus i Ofra och dödade alla sina sjuttio halvbröder, Jerubbaals söner, på en sten, utom en, Jotam, den yngste av dem alla, som lyckades fly och gömma sig. 6 Därefter samlades alla invånare i Shekem och Bet Millo och utropade Avimelek till kung under eken invid minnesstenen i Shekem.
7 När Jotam hörde detta, ställde han sig högst uppe på berget Gerisim och ropade till dem: ”Hör på mig, Shekems invånare, så att Gud ska höra er! 8 En gång beslutade träden att smörja en kung över sig. Först bad de olivträdet att bli deras kung, 9 men det svarade:
’Skulle jag sluta att ge olivolja med vilken både Gud och människor äras för att stå och svaja över de andra träden?’
10 Då vände de sig till fikonträdet. ’Kan inte du bli vår kung?’
11 Men fikonträdet vägrade också: ’Skulle jag sluta att bära ljuvlig frukt bara för att svaja över de andra träden?’
12 Då tillfrågades vinstocken: ’Kan inte du regera över oss?’
13 Men vinstocken svarade: ’Skulle jag sluta att ge vin som gläder både gudar och människor bara för att svaja över de andra träden?’
14 Då vände de sig slutligen till törnbusken: ’Du kan väl bli vår kung!’
15 Då svarade törnbusken: ’Om det verkligen är sant att ni vill smörja mig till er kung, så kom då och ta er tillflykt under min skugga. Om ni inte gör det, ska eld komma ut ur törnbusken och bränna ner cedrarna i Libanon!’
16 Tänk därför efter, om ni har handlat hederligt och rätt, när ni har utropat Avimelek till kung! Är det rätt mot Jerubbaal och alla hans ättlingar? Är det vad hans gärningar förtjänat? 17 Min far stred för er och riskerade livet för att befria er från midjaniterna, 18 men ändå har ni gjort uppror mot min fars familj och avrättat hans sjuttio söner på en och samma sten. Och nu har ni utropat hans slavinnas son, Avimelek, till er kung därför att han är släkt med er. 19 Om ni har handlat rätt mot Jerubbaal och hans familj, då ska ni och Avimelek få glädjas över varandra. 20 Men om ni har handlat orätt, då ska eld komma från Avimelek och förtära invånarna i Shekem och Bet Millo och en eld från dem ska i sin tur förtära Avimelek!”
21 Jotam flydde och bosatte sig i Beer. Han var rädd för sin bror Avimelek.
22 När Avimelek härskat över israeliterna i tre år, 23 lät Gud fiendskap uppstå mellan Avimelek och invånarna i Shekem som avföll från honom. 24 Detta skedde som hämnd för våldsdådet mot Jerubbaals sjuttio söner. Deras bror Avimelek som dräpte dem och männen i Shekem som medverkade till det skulle nu få sitt straff. 25 Shekems män lade sig i bakhåll i bergen för de förbipasserande för att råna dem. Men någon varnade Avimelek för detta. 26 Samtidigt flyttade Gaal, Eveds son, in i Shekem tillsammans med sina bröder. Shekems invånare fick förtroende för honom. 27 De gick ut på fältet, skördade och trampade druvorna och samlades till en skördefest i avgudatemplet. De åt och drack och började uttala förbannelser över Avimelek.
28 ”Vem är egentligen Avimelek?” frågade Gaal, Eveds son. ”Och Shekem? Varför ska vi vara hans tjänare? Är han inte Jerubbaals son och Sevul hans tillsyningsman? Nej, tjäna ättlingar till Hamor, Shekems far! Varför skulle vi tjäna Avimelek? 29 Om jag bara hade makt över detta folk, så skulle jag snart göra mig av med Avimelek och säga till honom: ’Samla ihop en här och kom och strid mot mig!’ ”
30 Men när Sevul, borgmästaren i staden fick höra vad Gaal hade sagt, blev han rasande. 31 Han sände i hemlighet ett meddelande till Avimelek och lät honom veta vad som höll på att hända: ”Gaal, Eveds son, och hans släktingar har flyttat till Shekem och nu försöker de få hela staden mot dig. 32 Kom med dina män i kväll! Göm er på fälten 33 och storma sedan staden på morgonen när solen går upp. När Gaal och hans män kommer ut för att strida mot dig, kan du göra vad du vill med dem!”
34 Avimelek och hans män bröt upp och lade sig i bakhåll på natten uppdelade i fyra grupper utanför Shekem. 35 På morgonen när Gaal, Eveds son, stod i stadsporten, kom Avimelek och hans män fram från sitt bakhåll.
36 När Gaal såg dem, ropade han till Sevul: ”Titta upp mot berget där! Det kommer folk där uppifrån.”
”Nej”, svarade Sevul. ”Det är bara skuggor av bergen som du tar för människor.” 37 ”Jo, titta där! Det kommer folk från landets mitt”, fortsatte Gaal. ”Och där kommer andra på vägen förbi teckentydareken!”
38 Då sa Sevul till honom: ”Hur är det nu med alla dina stora ord? Vem var det som sa: ’Vem är egentligen Avimelek, och varför skulle vi tjäna honom?’ Här är folket du föraktade. Gå nu ut och strid mot dem!” 39 Gaal drog då ut med männen från Shekem och stred mot Avimelek. 40 Avimelek drev honom tillbaka, han flydde och det låg sårade och döda ända fram till stadsporten.
41 Avimelek bodde sedan kvar i Aruma, men Sevul drev ut Gaal och hans bröder ur staden och lät dem inte längre bo där.
42 Dagen därpå gick folket i Shekem ut på fälten. Någon hade förvarnat Avimelek om detta 43 och han lade sig i bakhåll med sina män som han delat upp i tre grupper. När han såg männen från staden komma ut, rusade de fram och gick till attack. 44 Avimelek och hans grupp stormade fram mot stadsporten och ställde sig framför den, medan de andra två grupperna attackerade och dödade dem som var på fälten. 45 Avimelek anföll staden hela dagen tills han intagit hela staden och dödat alla som befann sig där inne. Han jämnade den med marken och strödde salt över platsen. 46 När Shekemtornets invånare hörde detta, tog de sin tillflykt till fästningen[a] vid El Berits tempel.
47 Avimelek fick veta att alla Shekemtornets invånare var samlade där 48 och han tog sina trupper med sig upp på berget Salmon. Där tog han en yxa, högg av grenar från träden och lade dem på sina axlar. ”Skynda er nu och gör precis som jag!” sa han till sina män. 49 Då högg också de av var sin gren och följde efter Avimelek till staden. Där staplade de upp veden mot fästningen[b] och tände på. Fästningen brändes och alla Shekemtornets invånare där inne dog, över tusen personer.
50 Därefter anföll Avimelek staden Teves och intog den. 51 I staden fanns ett befäst torn. Dit flydde befolkningen, blockerade ingången och klättrade upp på taket. 52 Medan Avimelek anföll tornet och närmade sig dess port för att bränna tornet, 53 var det en kvinna på taket som kastade ner en kvarnsten. Den träffade Avimelek i huvudet och krossade hans skalle.
54 ”Dra ditt svärd och döda mig!” ropade han till sin vapendragare. ”Ingen ska få säga att en kvinna dödade Avimelek!”
Den unge mannen genomborrade då Avimelek med sitt svärd och dödade honom 55 och när israeliterna såg att han var död, skingrades de och gick hem igen var och en till sitt.
56 På detta sätt straffade Gud Avimelek för det onda han hade gjort mot sin far när han dödade sina sjuttio bröder. 57 Gud lät det onda som Shekems män gjort komma över dem själva. Jotams, Jerubbaals sons, förbannelse drabbade dem.

9 And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother's brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,
2 Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.
3 And his mother's brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother.
4 And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.
5 And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.
6 And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.
7 And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.
8 The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
9 But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
10 And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.
11 But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
12 Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.
13 And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
14 Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou, and reign over us.
15 And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you, then come and put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.
16 Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;
17 (For my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:
18 And ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your brother;)
19 If ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:
20 But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.
21 And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
22 When Abimelech had reigned three years over Israel,
23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.
25 And the men of Shechem set liers in wait for him in the top of the mountains, and they robbed all that came along that way by them: and it was told Abimelech.
26 And Gaal the son of Ebed came with his brethren, and went over to Shechem: and the men of Shechem put their confidence in him.
27 And they went out into the fields, and gathered their vineyards, and trode the grapes, and made merry, and went into the house of their god, and did eat and drink, and cursed Abimelech.
28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? is not he the son of Jerubbaal? and Zebul his officer? serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem: for why should we serve him?
29 And would to God this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech. And he said to Abimelech, Increase thine army, and come out.
30 And when Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.
31 And he sent messengers unto Abimelech privily, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his brethren be come to Shechem; and, behold, they fortify the city against thee.
32 Now therefore up by night, thou and the people that is with thee, and lie in wait in the field:
33 And it shall be, that in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, thou shalt rise early, and set upon the city: and, behold, when he and the people that is with him come out against thee, then mayest thou do to them as thou shalt find occasion.
34 And Abimelech rose up, and all the people that were with him, by night, and they laid wait against Shechem in four companies.
35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and Abimelech rose up, and the people that were with him, from lying in wait.
36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, Behold, there come people down from the top of the mountains. And Zebul said unto him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as if they were men.
37 And Gaal spake again, and said, See there come people down by the middle of the land, and another company come along by the plain of Meonenim.
38 Then said Zebul unto him, Where is now thy mouth, wherewith thou saidst, Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him? is not this the people that thou hast despised? go out, I pray now, and fight with them.
39 And Gaal went out before the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.
40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him, and many were overthrown and wounded, even unto the entering of the gate.
41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah: and Zebul thrust out Gaal and his brethren, that they should not dwell in Shechem.
42 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people went out into the field; and they told Abimelech.
43 And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the field, and looked, and, behold, the people were come forth out of the city; and he rose up against them, and smote them.
44 And Abimelech, and the company that was with him, rushed forward, and stood in the entering of the gate of the city: and the two other companies ran upon all the people that were in the fields, and slew them.
45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; and he took the city, and slew the people that was therein, and beat down the city, and sowed it with salt.
46 And when all the men of the tower of Shechem heard that, they entered into an hold of the house of the god Berith.
47 And it was told Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
48 And Abimelech gat him up to mount Zalmon, he and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it, and laid it on his shoulder, and said unto the people that were with him, What ye have seen me do, make haste, and do as I have done.
49 And all the people likewise cut down every man his bough, and followed Abimelech, and put them to the hold, and set the hold on fire upon them; so that all the men of the tower of Shechem died also, about a thousand men and women.
50 Then went Abimelech to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.
51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and thither fled all the men and women, and all they of the city, and shut it to them, and gat them up to the top of the tower.
52 And Abimelech came unto the tower, and fought against it, and went hard unto the door of the tower to burn it with fire.
53 And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech's head, and all to brake his skull.
54 Then he called hastily unto the young man his armourbearer, and said unto him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, that men say not of me, A women slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.
55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man unto his place.
56 Thus God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, which he did unto his father, in slaying his seventy brethren:
57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.

Abimelek
9 Abimelek(A) son of Jerub-Baal(B) went to his mother’s brothers in Shechem and said to them and to all his mother’s clan, 2 “Ask all the citizens of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you: to have all seventy of Jerub-Baal’s sons rule over you, or just one man?’ Remember, I am your flesh and blood.(C)”
3 When the brothers repeated all this to the citizens of Shechem, they were inclined to follow Abimelek, for they said, “He is related to us.” 4 They gave him seventy shekels[a] of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith,(D) and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels,(E) who became his followers. 5 He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers,(F) the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham,(G) the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.(H) 6 Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo(I) gathered beside the great tree(J) at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.
7 When Jotham(K) was told about this, he climbed up on the top of Mount Gerizim(L) and shouted to them, “Listen to me, citizens of Shechem, so that God may listen to you. 8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’
9 “But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’
10 “Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’
11 “But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’
12 “Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’
13 “But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine,(M) which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’
14 “Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’
15 “The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade;(N) but if not, then let fire come out(O) of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’(P)
16 “Have you acted honorably and in good faith by making Abimelek king? Have you been fair to Jerub-Baal and his family? Have you treated him as he deserves? 17 Remember that my father fought for you and risked(Q) his life to rescue you from the hand of Midian. 18 But today you have revolted against my father’s family. You have murdered his seventy sons(R) on a single stone and have made Abimelek, the son of his female slave, king over the citizens of Shechem because he is related to you. 19 So have you acted honorably and in good faith toward Jerub-Baal and his family today?(S) If you have, may Abimelek be your joy, and may you be his, too! 20 But if you have not, let fire come out(T) from Abimelek and consume you, the citizens of Shechem(U) and Beth Millo,(V) and let fire come out from you, the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo, and consume Abimelek!”
21 Then Jotham(W) fled, escaping to Beer,(X) and he lived there because he was afraid of his brother Abimelek.
22 After Abimelek had governed Israel three years, 23 God stirred up animosity(Y) between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek. 24 God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons,(Z) the shedding(AA) of their blood, might be avenged(AB) on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him(AC) murder his brothers. 25 In opposition to him these citizens of Shechem set men on the hilltops to ambush and rob everyone who passed by, and this was reported to Abimelek.
26 Now Gaal son of Ebed(AD) moved with his clan into Shechem, and its citizens put their confidence in him. 27 After they had gone out into the fields and gathered the grapes and trodden(AE) them, they held a festival in the temple of their god.(AF) While they were eating and drinking, they cursed Abimelek. 28 Then Gaal son of Ebed(AG) said, “Who(AH) is Abimelek, and why should we Shechemites be subject to him? Isn’t he Jerub-Baal’s son, and isn’t Zebul his deputy? Serve the family of Hamor,(AI) Shechem’s father! Why should we serve Abimelek? 29 If only this people were under my command!(AJ) Then I would get rid of him. I would say to Abimelek, ‘Call out your whole army!’”[b](AK)
30 When Zebul the governor of the city heard what Gaal son of Ebed said, he was very angry. 31 Under cover he sent messengers to Abimelek, saying, “Gaal son of Ebed and his clan have come to Shechem and are stirring up the city against you. 32 Now then, during the night you and your men should come and lie in wait(AL) in the fields. 33 In the morning at sunrise, advance against the city. When Gaal and his men come out against you, seize the opportunity to attack them.(AM)”
34 So Abimelek and all his troops set out by night and took up concealed positions near Shechem in four companies. 35 Now Gaal son of Ebed had gone out and was standing at the entrance of the city gate(AN) just as Abimelek and his troops came out from their hiding place.(AO)
36 When Gaal saw them, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!”
Zebul replied, “You mistake the shadows of the mountains for men.”
37 But Gaal spoke up again: “Look, people are coming down from the central hill,[c] and a company is coming from the direction of the diviners’ tree.”
38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your big talk now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelek that we should be subject to him?’ Aren’t these the men you ridiculed?(AP) Go out and fight them!”
39 So Gaal led out[d] the citizens of Shechem and fought Abimelek. 40 Abimelek chased him all the way to the entrance of the gate, and many were killed as they fled. 41 Then Abimelek stayed in Arumah, and Zebul drove Gaal and his clan out of Shechem.
42 The next day the people of Shechem went out to the fields, and this was reported to Abimelek. 43 So he took his men, divided them into three companies(AQ) and set an ambush(AR) in the fields. When he saw the people coming out of the city, he rose to attack them. 44 Abimelek and the companies with him rushed forward to a position at the entrance of the city gate. Then two companies attacked those in the fields and struck them down. 45 All that day Abimelek pressed his attack against the city until he had captured it and killed its people. Then he destroyed the city(AS) and scattered salt(AT) over it.
46 On hearing this, the citizens in the tower of Shechem went into the stronghold of the temple(AU) of El-Berith. 47 When Abimelek heard that they had assembled there, 48 he and all his men went up Mount Zalmon.(AV) He took an ax and cut off some branches, which he lifted to his shoulders. He ordered the men with him, “Quick! Do what you have seen me do!” 49 So all the men cut branches and followed Abimelek. They piled them against the stronghold and set it on fire with the people still inside. So all the people in the tower of Shechem, about a thousand men and women, also died.
50 Next Abimelek went to Thebez(AW) and besieged it and captured it. 51 Inside the city, however, was a strong tower, to which all the men and women—all the people of the city—had fled. They had locked themselves in and climbed up on the tower roof. 52 Abimelek went to the tower and attacked it. But as he approached the entrance to the tower to set it on fire, 53 a woman dropped an upper millstone on his head and cracked his skull.(AX)
54 Hurriedly he called to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me,(AY) so that they can’t say, ‘A woman killed him.’” So his servant ran him through, and he died. 55 When the Israelites saw that Abimelek was dead, they went home.
56 Thus God repaid the wickedness that Abimelek had done to his father by murdering his seventy brothers. 57 God also made the people of Shechem pay for all their wickedness.(AZ) The curse of Jotham(BA) son of Jerub-Baal came on them.
