Judges 1
International Standard Version
The Capture of Jerusalem
1 Sometime after Joshua had died, the Israelis asked the Lord, “Who is to lead[a] us against the Canaanites in our opening attack against them?”
2 The Lord replied, “The tribe of[b] Judah is to lead you.[c] Look! I’ve given the land into their control.”
3 But the tribe of Judah told the tribe of Simeon, the descendants of Judah’s[d] brother, “Come with us[e] into our territory, and we’ll both fight the Canaanites. In return, we’ll[f] go with you when you fight in your territory.” So the army of[g] the tribe of Simeon accompanied the army of the tribe of Judah.
4 When the army of the tribe of Judah went into battle, the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their control, and they defeated 10,000 men at Bezek. 5 They located Adoni-bezek in Bezek, fought him, and defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. 6 Adoni-bezek ran off, but they pursued him, caught him, and amputated his thumbs and big toes. 7 Adoni-bezek used to brag, “Seventy kings without thumbs and big toes used to eat what was left under my table. God has repaid me for what I’ve done.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he later died there.
8 Then the army of Judah attacked Jerusalem, captured it, executed its inhabitants, and set fire to the city. 9 Later, the army of Judah left Jerusalem[h] to attack the Canaanites who lived in the hill country, the Negev,[i] and the Shephelah.[j] 10 They[k] attacked the Canaanites who inhabited Hebron (formerly known as Kiriath-arba) and fought Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
The Capture of Debir(A)
11 The army of Judah then proceeded to attack the inhabitants of Debir, which used to be known as Kiriath-sepher. 12 Caleb announced, “I’ll give my daughter Achsah in marriage to whomever leads the attack against Kiriath-sepher and captures it.” 13 Othniel, Caleb’s nephew through his younger brother Kenaz, captured the city, so Caleb[l] awarded him his daughter Achsah in marriage.
14 Later on, after she had arrived, she urged Othniel[m] to ask her father for a field. As she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What do you want[n] for yourself?”
15 “I want this blessing from you,” she replied. “Since you’ve given me land in the Negev,[o] give me water springs, too.” So Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
The Capture of Certain Southern Territories
16 The descendants of the Kenites, the tribe from which[p] Moses’ father-in-law came, accompanied the descendants of Judah from the city of the palms to the Judean wilderness, which is in the desert area south of Arad, and lived with the people there. 17 The army of Judah accompanied the army of Simeon, Judah’s[q] brother, as they attacked the Canaanites who were living in Zephath, and they completely destroyed it. Then they renamed the city Hormah. 18 The army of Judah captured Gaza and its territory, Ashkelon and its territory, and Ekron and its territory. 19 The Lord was with the army of Judah, and they captured the hill country, but did not expel the inhabitants of the valley because they were equipped with iron chariots.
Hebron Awarded to Caleb(B)
20 They gave Hebron to Caleb, just as Moses had promised,[r] and he drove out the three sons of Anak from there. 21 However, the descendants of Benjamin did not expel the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived with the descendants of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
The Capture of Bethel
22 Then the army of the tribe[s] of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the Lord was with them. 23 The army of the tribe of Joseph scouted out Bethel, which had been formerly named Luz. 24 The scouts observed a man coming out of the city and they promised him, “Please show us the entrance to the city and we’ll deal kindly with you.” 25 So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they attacked the city with swords, but they let the man and his entire family escape. 26 So the man traveled to the land of the Hittites and built a city that he named “Luz,” and it is called by that name to this day.
Unconquered Territories
27 The army of the tribe of Manasseh did not conquer Beth-shean and its villages, Taanach and its villages, the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages. Instead, the Canaanites continued to live in that land. 28 When Israel had grown strong, they subjected the Canaanites to conscripted labor and never did expel them completely.
29 The army of the tribe of Ephraim did not expel the Canaanites who were living in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.
30 The army of the tribe of Zebulun did not expel the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but were subjected to conscripted labor.
31 The army of the tribe of Asher did not expel the inhabitants of Acco nor the inhabitants of Sidon, Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob. 32 So the descendants of Asher lived among the Canaanites who continued to inhabit the land, because they did not expel them.
33 The army of the tribe of Naphtali did not expel the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and the inhabitants of Beth-anath. Instead, they lived among the Canaanites who inhabited the land. However, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and Beth-anath were subjected to conscripted labor.
34 Later on, the Amorites forced the descendants of Dan into the hill country and did not permit them to come into the valleys of the hills. 35 Furthermore, the Amorites continued to inhabit Mount Heres in Aijalon and Shaalbim. Eventually, however, after the tribe[t] of Joseph had become strong, the Amorites[u] were subjected to conscripted labor. 36 The Amorite border extended upward from the Akrabbim Ascent, that is, from Sela.

Judges 1
The Message
1 A time came after the death of Joshua when the People of Israel asked God, “Who will take the lead in going up against the Canaanites to fight them?”
2 And God said, “Judah will go. I’ve given the land to him.”
3 The men of Judah said to those of their brother Simeon, “Go up with us to our territory and we’ll fight the Canaanites. Then we’ll go with you to your territory.” And Simeon went with them.
4 So Judah went up. God gave them the Canaanites and the Perizzites. They defeated them at Bezek—ten military units!
5-7 They caught up with My-Master-Bezek there and fought him. They smashed the Canaanites and the Perizzites. My-Master-Bezek ran, but they gave chase and caught him. They cut off his thumbs and big toes. My-Master-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to crawl under my table, scavenging. Now God has done to me what I did to them.”
They brought him to Jerusalem and he died there.

8-10 The people of Judah attacked and captured Jerusalem, subduing the city by sword and then sending it up in flames. After that they had gone down to fight the Canaanites who were living in the hill country, the Negev, and the foothills. Judah had gone on to the Canaanites who lived in Hebron (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba) and brought Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai to their knees.
11-12 From there they had marched against the population of Debir (Debir used to be called Kiriath Sepher). Caleb had said, “Whoever attacks Kiriath Sepher and takes it, I’ll give my daughter Acsah to him as his wife.”
13 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it, so Caleb gave him his daughter Acsah as his wife.
14-15 When she arrived she got him
to ask for farmland from her father.
As she dismounted from her donkey
Caleb asked her, “What would you like?”
She said, “Give me a marriage gift.
You’ve given me desert land;
Now give me pools of water!”
And he gave her the upper and the lower pools.

16 The people of Hobab the Kenite, Moses’ relative, went up with the people of Judah from the City of Palms to the wilderness of Judah at the descent of Arad. They settled down there with the Amalekites.
17 The people of Judah went with their kin the Simeonites and struck the Canaanites who lived in Zephath. They carried out the holy curse and named the city Curse-town.
18-19 But Judah didn’t manage to capture Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ekron with their territories. God was certainly with Judah in that they took over the hill country. But they couldn’t oust the people on the plain because they had iron chariots.
20 They gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had directed. Caleb drove out the three sons of Anak.
21 But the people of Benjamin couldn’t get rid of the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. Benjaminites and Jebusites live side by side in Jerusalem to this day.

22-26 The house of Joseph went up to attack Bethel. God was with them. Joseph sent out spies to look the place over. Bethel used to be known as Luz. The spies saw a man leaving the city and said to him, “Show us a way into the city and we’ll treat you well.” The man showed them a way in. They killed everyone in the city but the man and his family. The man went to Hittite country and built a city. He named it Luz; that’s its name to this day.
27-28 But Manasseh never managed to drive out Beth Shan, Taanach, Dor, Ibleam, and Megiddo with their territories. The Canaanites dug in their heels and wouldn’t budge. When Israel became stronger they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but they never got rid of them.
29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer. The Canaanites stuck it out and lived there with them.
30 Nor did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites in Kitron or Nahalol. They kept living there, but they were put to forced labor.
31-32 Nor did Asher drive out the people of Acco, Sidon, Ahlab, Aczib, Helbah, Aphek, and Rehob. Asher went ahead and settled down with the Canaanites since they could not get rid of them.
33 Naphtali fared no better. They couldn’t drive out the people of Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath so they just moved in and lived with them. They did, though, put them to forced labor.
34-35 The Amorites pushed the people of Dan up into the hills and wouldn’t let them down on the plains. The Amorites stubbornly continued to live in Mount Heres, Aijalon, and Shaalbim. But when the house of Joseph got the upper hand, they were put to forced labor.
36 The Amorite border extended from Scorpions’ Pass and Sela upward.

Judges 1
Revised Geneva Translation
1 After Joshua was dead, the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, “Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites, to fight first against them?”
2 And the LORD said, “Judah shall go up. Behold, I have given the land into his hand.”
3 And Judah said to Simeon, his brother, “Come up with me into my lot, so that we may fight against the Canaanites. And I likewise will go with you into your lot.” So, Simeon went with him.
4 Then Judah went up. And the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands. And in Bezek, they killed ten thousand of them.
5 And they found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek; and they fought against him and killed the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6 But Adoni-Bezek fled. And they pursued after him and caught him and cut off the thumbs of his hands and of his feet.
7 And Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings, having the thumbs of their hands and their feet cut off, gathered crumbs under my table. As I have done, so God has rewarded me.” So, they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
8 Now, the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it and struck it with the edge of the sword and had set the city on fire.
9 Afterward, the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the mountain and toward the South and in the low country.
10 And Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron (the Hebron which beforetime was called Kirjath Arba) and they killed Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
11 And from there he went to the inhabitants of Debir (the name of Debir in old time was Kirjath Sepher).
12 And Caleb said, “He who strikes Kirjath Sepher, and takes it, to him will I give Achsah, my daughter, for a wife.”
13 And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it, to whom he gave Achsah, his daughter, for a wife.
14 And when she came, she moved him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted her donkey; and Caleb said to her, “What are you doing?”
15 And she answered him, “Give me a blessing. For you have given me a southern country, give me also springs of water.” And Caleb gave her the springs above and the springs beneath.
16 And the children of Keni, Moses’ father-in-law, went up out of the city of the palm trees, with the children of Judah, into the wilderness of Judah that lies in the southern region of Arad, and went and dwelt among the people.
17 But Judah went with Simeon, his brother, and they killed the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it, and called the name of the city Hormah.
18 Also, Judah took Gaza, with its territories, and Ashkelon, with its territories, and Ekron, with its territories.
19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he possessed the mountains. For he could not drive out the inhabitants of the valleys because they had chariots of iron.
20 And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said; and he expelled from there the three sons of Anak.
21 But, the children of Benjamin did not cast out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem. Therefore, the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.
22 They, also, who were of the House of Joseph, went up to Bethel. And the LORD was with them.
23 And the House of Joseph spied out Bethel (the name of the city beforetime was Luz.)
24 And the spies saw a man come out of the city; and they said to him, “Show us, please, the way into the city; and we will show you mercy.”
25 And when he had shown them the way into the city, they struck the city with the edge of the sword. But they let the man and all his household depart.
26 Then the man went into the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name ‘Luz’, which is its name to this day.
27 Nor did Manasseh destroy Beth Shean, with her towns, or Taanach with her towns, or the inhabitants of Dor with her towns, or the inhabitants of Ibleam with her towns, or the inhabitants of Megiddo with her towns. But the Canaanites still dwelt in that land.
28 And it came to pass at that time, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, but did not expel them completely.
29 Likewise, Ephraim did not expel the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer, but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
30 Nor did Zebulun expel the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of Nahalol, but the Canaanites dwelt among them and became tributaries.
31 Nor did Asher cast out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, or of Achzib, or of Helbah, or of Aphik, or of Rehob,
32 but the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. For they did not drive them out.
33 Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth Anath, but dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and of Beth Anath became tributaries to them.
34 And the Amorites drove the children of Dan into the mountain, so that they did not allow them to come down to the valley.
35 And the Amorites still dwelt on Mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim. And when the hand of Joseph’s family prevailed, they became tributaries.
36 And the territory of the Amorites was from Maaleh-Akrabbim, from Sela and upward.
