耶和華留下的民族
3 這些國的人是耶和華留下的，為要藉著他們來試驗以色列人，就是所有沒有經驗過迦南任何戰爭的人； 2 好使以色列人的後代，那些以前沒有經驗過這些戰爭的人，知道學習爭戰。 3 他留下的就是非利士人的五個首領，和所有迦南人、西頓人，以及住在黎巴嫩山上的希未人，從巴力．黑門山直到哈馬口。 4 他們留在那裡，為要藉著他們試驗以色列人，要知道他們是否聽從耶和華藉摩西吩咐他們列祖的誡命。 5 以色列人就住在迦南人、赫人、亞摩利人、比利洗人、希未人、耶布斯人中間； 6 他們娶他們的女兒作妻子，也把自己的女兒嫁給他們的兒子，並且事奉他們的神。

7 以色列人行了耶和華看為惡的事，忘記了耶和華他們的 神，去事奉眾巴力和亞舍拉。 8 因此，耶和華的怒氣向以色列人發作，把他們完全交在兩河之間的亞蘭王古珊．利薩田的手中；以色列人服事了古珊．利薩田八年。 9 以色列人向耶和華哀求的時候，耶和華就為以色列人興起一位拯救者拯救他們，就是迦勒的弟弟基納斯的兒子俄陀聶。 10 耶和華的靈臨到他身上，他就治理以色列人；他出去作戰，耶和華把亞蘭王古珊．利薩田交在他手中，他的能力就勝過了古珊．利薩田。 11 於是國中太平了四十年。後來基納斯的兒子俄陀聶死了。
以笏
12 以色列人又行了耶和華看為惡的事，耶和華就使摩押王伊磯倫強盛起來，欺壓以色列人，因為他們行了耶和華看為惡的事。 13 伊磯倫集合了亞捫人和亞瑪力人，前來擊敗了以色列人，佔領了棕樹城。 14 於是以色列人服事了摩押王伊磯倫十八年。
15 以色列人向耶和華哀求的時候，耶和華就為他們興起一位拯救者，就是便雅憫人基拉的兒子以笏，是一個用左手的人。以色列人派他把貢物送給摩押王伊磯倫。 16 以笏做了一把兩刃的劍，長半公尺，縛在右腿上，在衣服底下。 17 他把貢物呈獻給摩押王伊磯倫；伊磯倫原是個非常肥胖的人。 18 以笏獻完了貢物，就把抬貢物的眾人打發走了。 19 自己卻從靠近吉甲的眾雕像那裡回來，說：“王啊，我有一件機密的事要對你說。”王說：“暫不要說。”侍立左右的人都離開他出去了。 20 以笏來到王那裡；王獨自一人坐在涼樓上。以笏說：“我有 神的話要告訴你。”王就從座位上站起來。 21 以笏就伸出左手，從右腿上拔出劍來，刺入王的腹中； 22 連劍柄與劍身都刺進去了，肥肉把劍身夾住，因此他沒有把劍從王的肚腹裡拔出來；接著他就從窗戶爬了出去。 23 以笏出到走廊，把涼樓上的門關起來，上了鎖。
24 以笏出來以後，王的僕人才來到；他們看見涼樓上的門鎖著，就說：“王一定是在涼樓上大解。” 25 他們等到發慌了，見他還不打開涼樓的門，就拿鑰匙來開；不料，看見他們的主人早已倒在地上死了。
26 他們耽延的時候，以笏已經逃跑了；他經過眾雕像那裡，逃到西伊拉去。 27 他去到以後，就在以法蓮山地吹角；以色列人與他一同從山地上下來，他走在他們前頭， 28 對他們說：“你們跟隨我，因為耶和華已經把你們的仇敵摩押人交在你們手中。”他們就跟隨他下去，攻取約旦河的渡口，攔截摩押人，不讓一個過去。 29 那時他們擊殺了約有一萬摩押人，都是強壯的、勇猛的人，沒有一人逃脫。 30 這樣，從那天起，摩押就在以色列人的手下被制伏了，於是國中太平了八十年。
珊迦
31 以笏之後，有亞拿的兒子珊迦；他用趕牛棒擊殺了六百非利士人；他也拯救了以色列人。

3 1-2 耶和华为了考验那些没有经历过迦南战事的以色列人，让他们学习作战，就留下了以下各族： 3 五个非利士王、所有的迦南人、西顿人和住在巴力·黑门山到哈马口一带的黎巴嫩山区的希未人。 4 耶和华留下这几个外族是要考验以色列人，看他们是否愿意遵从祂借摩西向他们祖先颁布的诫命。 5 以色列人住在这些迦南人、赫人、亚摩利人、比利洗人、希未人和耶布斯人当中， 6 跟他们通婚，祭拜他们的神明。
士师俄陀聂

24 以笏走后，王的仆人过来，见房门紧锁，以为王在大解。 25 等了很久，门还没开，他们很焦急，就拿钥匙开门，发现他们的主人已经倒毙在地上。
26 他们等待的时候，以笏已经逃走了。他经过雕石神像的地方，逃往西伊拉。 27 到了那里，他就在以法莲的山区吹响号角，召集以色列人。众人跟随以笏下山， 28 以笏对他们说：“跟我来！耶和华已经把仇敌摩押人交在你们手中了。”于是，众人跟着他占领了通往摩押的约旦河各渡口，不许任何人渡河。 29 当时他们杀了约一万名强悍善战的摩押勇士，没有一人逃脱。 30 这样，以色列人征服了摩押人，国中安享太平八十年。
珊迦
31 以笏之后，亚拿的儿子珊迦拯救了以色列人。他曾用一根赶牛棍杀了六百名非利士人。

3 Now these are the nations which Yahweh left, to test Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan; 2 only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at least those who knew nothing of it before: 3 the five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. 4 They were left to test Israel by them, to know whether they would listen to Yahweh’s commandments, which he commanded their fathers by Moses. 5 The children of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. 6 They took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods. 7 The children of Israel did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and forgot Yahweh their God, and served the Baals and the Asheroth. 8 Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years. 9 When the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. 10 Yahweh’s Spirit came on him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Yahweh delivered Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand. His hand prevailed against Cushan Rishathaim. 11 The land had rest forty years, then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
12 The children of Israel again did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and Yahweh strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight. 13 He gathered the children of Ammon and Amalek to himself; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees. 14 The children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years. 15 But when the children of Israel cried to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up a savior for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab. 16 Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit[a] in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh. 17 He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man. 18 When Ehud had finished offering the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute. 19 But he himself turned back from the stone idols that were by Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.”
The king said, “Keep silence!” All who stood by him left him.
20 Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, “I have a message from God to you.” He arose out of his seat. 21 Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body. 22 The handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn’t draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind. 23 Then Ehud went out onto the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them.
24 After he had gone, his servants came and saw that the doors of the upper room were locked. They said, “Surely he is covering his feet[b] in the upper room.” 25 They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn’t open the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their lord had fallen down dead on the floor.
26 Ehud escaped while they waited, passed beyond the stone idols, and escaped to Seirah. 27 When he had come, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he led them.
28 He said to them, “Follow me; for Yahweh has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn’t allow any man to pass over. 29 They struck at that time about ten thousand men of Moab, every strong man and every man of valor. No man escaped. 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Then the land had rest eighty years.
31 After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad. He also saved Israel.
