21 Y LOS varones de Israel habían jurado en Mizpa, diciendo: Ninguno de nosotros dará su hija á los de Benjamín por mujer.
2 Y vino el pueblo á la casa de Dios, y estuviéronse allí hasta la tarde delante de Dios; y alzando su voz hicieron gran llanto, y dijeron:
3 Oh Jehová Dios de Israel, ¿por qué ha sucedido esto en Israel, que falte hoy de Israel una tribu?
4 Y al día siguiente el pueblo se levantó de mañana, y edificaron allí altar, y ofrecieron holocaustos y pacíficos.
5 Y dijeron los hijos de Israel: ¿Quién de todas las tribus de Israel no subió á la reunión cerca de Jehová? Porque se había hecho gran juramento contra el que no subiese á Jehová en Mizpa, diciendo: Sufrirá muerte.
6 Y los hijos de Israel se arrepintieron á causa de Benjamín su hermano, y dijeron: Una tribu es hoy cortada de Israel.
7 ¿Qué haremos en cuanto á mujeres para los que han quedado? Nosotros hemos jurado por Jehová que no les hemos de dar nuestras hijas por mujeres.
8 Y dijeron: ¿Hay alguno de las tribus de Israel que no haya subido á Jehová en Mizpa? Y hallaron que ninguno de Jabes-galaad había venido al campo á la reunión:
9 Porque el pueblo fué contado, y no hubo allí varón de los moradores de Jabes-galaad.
10 Entonces la congregación envió allá doce mil hombres de los más valientes, y mandáronles, diciendo: Id y poned á cuchillo á los moradores de Jabes-galaad, y las mujeres y niños.
11 Mas haréis de esta manera: mataréis á todo varón, y á toda mujer que hubiere conocido ayuntamiento de varón.
12 Y hallaron de los moradores de Jabes-galaad cuatrocientas doncellas que no habían conocido hombre en ayuntamiento de varón, y trajéronlas al campo en Silo, que es en la tierra de Canaán.
13 Toda la congregación envió luego á hablar á los hijos de Benjamín que estaban en la peña de Rimmón, y llamáronlos en paz.
14 Y volvieron entonces los de Benjamín; y diéronles por mujeres las que habían guardado vivas de las mujeres de Jabes-galaad: mas no les bastaron éstas.
15 Y el pueblo tuvo dolor á causa de Benjamín, de que Jehová hubiese hecho mella en las tribus de Israel.
16 Entonces los ancianos de la congregación dijeron: ¿Qué haremos acerca de mujeres para los que han quedado? Porque el sexo de las mujeres había sido raído de Benjamín.
17 Y dijeron: La heredad de los que han escapado ha de ser lo que era de Benjamín, porque no sea una tribu raída de Israel.
18 Nosotros empero, no les podemos dar mujeres de nuestras hijas, porque los hijos de Israel han jurado, diciendo: Maldito el que diere mujer á Benjamín.
19 Ahora bien, dijeron, he aquí cada un año hay solemnidad de Jehová en Silo, que está al aquilón de Beth-el, y al lado oriental del camino que sube de Beth-el á Sichêm, y al mediodía de Lebona.
20 Y mandaron á los hijos de Benjamín, diciendo: Id, y poned emboscada en las viñas:
21 Y estad atentos: y cuando viereis salir las hijas de Silo á bailar en corros, vosotros saldréis de las viñas, y arrebataréis cada uno mujer para sí de las hijas de Silo, y os iréis á tierra de Benjamín:
22 Y cuando vinieren los padres de ellas ó sus hermanos á demandárnoslo, nosotros les diremos: Tened piedad de nosotros en lugar de ellos: pues que nosotros en la guerra no tomamos mujeres para todos: que vosotros no se las habéis dado, para que ahora seáis culpables.
23 Y los hijos de Benjamín lo hicieron así; pues tomaron mujeres conforme á su número, pillando de las que danzaban; y yéndose luego, tornáronse á su heredad, y reedificaron las ciudades, y habitaron en ellas.
24 Entonces los hijos de Israel se fueron también de allí, cada uno á su tribu y á su familia, saliendo de allí cada uno á su heredad.
25 En estos días no había rey en Israel: cada uno hacía lo recto delante de sus ojos.

A Tribe Is Cut Off
21 Now the men of Israel (A)had sworn in Mizpah, saying, “None of us shall give his daughter to Benjamin as a wife.” 2 (B)So the people came to Bethel and sat there before God until evening and lifted up their voices and wept [a]bitterly. 3 And they said, “Why, O Yahweh, God of Israel, has this come about in Israel, so that one tribe should be missing today from Israel?” 4 Now it happened the next day that the people arose early and built (C)an altar there and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.
5 Then the sons of Israel said, “Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up in the assembly to Yahweh?” For [b]they had taken a great oath concerning him (D)who did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.” 6 And the sons of Israel were sorry for their brother Benjamin and said, “One tribe is cut off from Israel today. 7 What shall we do for wives for those who are left? But we have (E)sworn by Yahweh not to give them any of our daughters in marriage.”
Sons of Benjamin Steal the Daughters of Shiloh
8 So they said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel who did not come up to Yahweh at Mizpah?” And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly. 9 Indeed the people were [c]numbered, but behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there. 10 And the congregation sent 12,000 of the men of valor there and commanded them, saying, “Go and (F)strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones. 11 Now this is the thing that you shall do: you (G)shall devote to destruction every man and every woman who has known, that is lain with, a man.” 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with [d]him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 Then the whole congregation sent word and spoke to the sons of Benjamin who were (H)at the rock of Rimmon and (I)called out peace to them. 14 Then Benjamin returned at that time, and they gave them the women whom they had kept alive from the women of Jabesh-gilead; yet they did not find [e]enough for them. 15 And the people were sorry for Benjamin because Yahweh had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 Then the elders of the congregation said, “What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?” 17 And they said, “There must be a possession for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe will not be blotted out from Israel. 18 But we cannot give them wives of our daughters.” For the sons of Israel (J)had sworn, saying, “Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin.”
19 So they said, “Behold, there is a feast of Yahweh from year to year in (K)Shiloh, which is on the north side of Bethel, on [f]the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south side of Lebonah.” 20 And they commanded the sons of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in wait in the vineyards, 21 and watch; and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to [g](L)take part in the dances, then you shall come out of the vineyards, and each of you shall catch his wife from the daughters of Shiloh and go to the land of Benjamin. 22 And it will be when their fathers or their brothers come to contend with us, that we shall say to them, ‘Be gracious to us concerning them because we did not take for each man of Benjamin [h]a wife in the battle, [i](M)and you did not give your daughters to them; otherwise you would now be guilty.’” 23 And the sons of Benjamin did so and carried away wives according to their number from those who danced, whom they stole away. And they went and returned to their inheritance and (N)rebuilt the cities and lived in them. 24 Then the sons of Israel went away from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and each one of them went out from there to his inheritance.
25 (O)In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

Esposas para los benjamitas
21 Los israelitas habían jurado en Mizpa: «Ninguno de nosotros dará su hija en matrimonio a un benjamita».
2 El pueblo fue a Betel[a] y allí permanecieron hasta el anochecer, clamando y llorando amargamente en presencia de Dios. 3 «Oh Señor, Dios de Israel —clamaban—, ¿por qué le ha sucedido esto a Israel? ¡Hoy ha desaparecido una de nuestras tribus!».
4 Al día siguiente el pueblo se levantó de madrugada, construyó allí un altar, y presentaron holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión.
5 Luego preguntaron los israelitas: «¿Quién de entre todas las tribus de Israel no se presentó a la asamblea del Señor?». Porque habían pronunciado un juramento solemne contra cualquiera que no se presentara ante el Señor en Mizpa, que decía así: «Tendrá que morir».
6 Los israelitas se afligieron por sus hermanos, los benjamitas. «Hoy ha sido arrancada una tribu de Israel —dijeron ellos—. 7 ¿Cómo podemos proveerles esposas a los que quedan, si ya hemos jurado ante el Señor no darles ninguna de nuestras hijas en matrimonio?». 8 Entonces preguntaron: «¿Cuál de las tribus de Israel no se presentó ante el Señor en Mizpa?». Y resultó que ninguno de Jabés de Galaad había llegado al campamento para la asamblea, 9 porque al pasar revista al pueblo notaron que de los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad no había allí ninguno.
10 Así que la asamblea envió doce mil de los mejores guerreros con la siguiente orden: «Vayan y maten a filo de espada a los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad. Maten también a las mujeres y a los niños. 11 Esto es lo que van a hacer: Exterminarán a todos los hombres y a todas las mujeres que no sean vírgenes». 12 Entre los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad encontraron a cuatrocientas muchachas que no habían tenido relaciones sexuales con ningún hombre y las llevaron al campamento de Siló, que está en la tierra de Canaán.
13 Entonces toda la comunidad envió una oferta de paz a los benjamitas que estaban en la peña de Rimón. 14 En esa ocasión, regresaron los benjamitas y les entregaron las mujeres de Jabés de Galaad que habían dejado con vida. Pero no hubo mujeres para todos.
15 El pueblo todavía se afligía por Benjamín, porque el Señor había dejado un vacío en las tribus de Israel. 16 Y los jefes de la asamblea dijeron: «¿Cómo podemos dar mujeres a los hombres que quedaron, si las mujeres de Benjamín fueron exterminadas? 17 ¡Los sobrevivientes benjamitas deben tener herederos —exclamaron—, para que no sea aniquilada una tribu de Israel! 18 Pero nosotros no podemos darles nuestras hijas como esposas, porque hemos jurado diciendo: “Maldito sea el que dé una mujer a un benjamita”. 19 Pero miren, se acerca la fiesta del Señor que todos los años se celebra en Siló, al norte de Betel, y al este del camino que va de Betel a Siquén, y al sur de Leboná».
20 Así que dieron estas instrucciones a los de Benjamín: «Vayan, escóndanse en los viñedos 21 y estén atentos. Cuando las muchachas de Siló salgan a bailar, salgan ustedes de los viñedos y róbese cada uno de ustedes una de esas muchachas para esposa, y váyase a la tierra de Benjamín. 22 Y si sus padres o sus hermanos vienen a reclamarnos algo, les diremos: “Sean bondadosos con ellos, porque no conseguimos esposas para todos durante la guerra. Además, ustedes son inocentes, ya que no les dieron sus hijas”».
23 Así lo hicieron los de la tribu de Benjamín. Mientras bailaban las muchachas, cada uno de ellos se robó una y se la llevó. Luego regresaron a sus propias tierras, reconstruyeron las ciudades y se establecieron en ellas.
24 Luego de eso los israelitas también se fueron de aquel lugar y regresaron a sus tribus y a sus clanes, cada uno a su propia tierra.
25 En aquella época no había rey en Israel; cada uno hacía lo que le parecía mejor.
