Ангел Вечного приходит в Бохим

Ангел Вечного[a] пришёл из Гилгала[b] в Бохим и сказал:

– Я вывел вас из Египта и привёл в землю, о которой клялся вашим предкам. Я сказал: «Я никогда не нарушу Своё священное соглашение с вами, а вы не заключайте соглашение с жителями этой земли, но сокрушите их жертвенники». Но вы не послушались Меня. Почему? Теперь Я говорю вам, что не стану прогонять их от вас, они будут вам врагами, а их боги будут для вас западнёй.

Когда Ангел Вечного сказал эти слова всем исраильтянам, народ громко заплакал, и они назвали то место Бохим («плачущие»). Там они совершили жертвоприношение Вечному.

Гнев Вечного на Исраил

После того как Иешуа отпустил народ, они пошли, чтобы завладеть землёй, каждый в свой надел. Народ служил Вечному во время жизни Иешуа и старейшин, переживших его, которые видели все великие дела, совершённые Вечным для Исраила.

Они последовали за богами народов, которые были вокруг них, и стали поклоняться им. Confrontation and Repentance at Bokim

The angel of the Lord[a] went up from Gilgal to Bokim. He said, “I brought you up from Egypt and led you into the land I had solemnly promised to give to your ancestors.[b] I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you, but you must not make an agreement with the people who live in this land. You should tear down the altars where they worship.’[c] But you have disobeyed me.[d] Why would you do such a thing?[e] At that time I also warned you,[f] ‘If you disobey,[g] I will not drive out the Canaanites[h] before you. They will ensnare you[i] and their gods will lure you away.’”[j]

When the angel of the Lord finished speaking these words to all the Israelites, the people wept loudly.[k] They named that place Bokim[l] and offered sacrifices to the Lord there.

The End of an Era

When Joshua dismissed[m] the people, the Israelites went to their allotted portions of territory,[n] intending to take possession of the land. The people worshiped[o] the Lord throughout Joshua’s lifetime and as long as the elderly men[p] who outlived him remained alive. These men had witnessed[q] all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.[r] Joshua son of Nun, the Lord’s servant, died at the age of 110. The people[s] buried him in his allotted land[t] in Timnath Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 10 That entire generation passed away;[u] a new generation grew up[v] that had not personally experienced the Lord’s presence or seen what he had done for Israel.[w]

A Monotonous Cycle

11 The Israelites did evil before[x] the Lord by worshiping[y] the Baals. 12 They abandoned the Lord God of their ancestors[z] who brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods—the gods of the nations who lived around them. They worshiped[aa] them and made the Lord angry. 13 They abandoned the Lord and worshiped Baal and the Ashtoreths.[ab]

14 The Lord was furious with Israel[ac] and handed them over to robbers who plundered them.[ad] He turned them over to[ae] their enemies who lived around them. They could no longer withstand their enemies’ attacks.[af] 15 Whenever they went out to fight,[ag] the Lord did them harm,[ah] just as he had warned and solemnly vowed he would do.[ai] They suffered greatly.[aj]

16 The Lord raised up leaders[ak] who delivered them from these robbers.[al] 17 But they did not obey[am] their leaders. Instead they prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped[an] them. They quickly turned aside from the path[ao] their ancestors[ap] had walked. Their ancestors had obeyed the Lord’s commands, but they did not.[aq] 18 When the Lord raised up leaders for them, the Lord was with each leader and delivered the people[ar] from their enemies while the leader remained alive. The Lord felt sorry for them[as] when they cried out in agony because of what their harsh oppressors did to them.[at] 19 When a leader died, the next generation[au] would again[av] act more wickedly than the previous one.[aw] They would follow after other gods, worshiping them[ax] and bowing down to them. They did not give up[ay] their practices or their stubborn ways.

A Divine Decision

20 The Lord was furious with Israel.[az] He said, “This nation[ba] has violated the terms of the covenant I made with their ancestors[bb] by disobeying me.[bc] 21 So I will no longer remove before them any of the nations that Joshua left unconquered when he died, 22 in order to test Israel.[bd] [be] I want to see[bf] whether or not the people[bg] will carefully walk in the path[bh] marked out by[bi] the Lord, as their ancestors[bj] were careful to do.” 23 This is why[bk] the Lord permitted these nations to remain and did not conquer them immediately;[bl] he did not hand them over to Joshua.

In this case the statement recorded in vv. 20b-21 is the test in that it forces Israel to respond either positively (through repentance) or negatively to the Lord’s declaration. A third possibility is to subordinate “to test” to “left unconquered” (v. 21). In this case the Lord recalls that Joshua left these nations as a test. Israel has failed the test (v. 20), so the Lord announces that the punishment threatened earlier (Josh 23:12-13; see also Judg 2:3) will now be implemented. As B. G. Webb (Judges [JSOTSup], 115) observes, “The nations which were originally left as a test are now left as a punishment.” This view harmonizes v. 23, which explains that the Lord did not give all the nations to Joshua, with v. 22. (For a grammatical parallel, where the infinitive construct of נָסָה [nasah] is subordinated to the perfect of עָזַב [ʿazav], see 2 Chr 32:31.)

El ángel del SEÑOR en Boquim

El ángel del SEÑOR subió de Gilgal a Boquim y dijo:

—Yo los saqué de Egipto y los introduje en la tierra acerca de la cual había jurado a sus padres diciendo: “No invalidaré jamás mi pacto con ustedes, con tal que ustedes no hagan una alianza con los habitantes de esta tierra, cuyos altares habrán de derribar”. Pero ustedes no han obedecido mi voz. ¿Por qué han hecho esto? Por eso yo digo también: No los echaré de delante de ustedes, sino que les serán adversarios[a] y sus dioses les servirán de tropiezo.

Aconteció que cuando el ángel del SEÑOR acabó de decir estas palabras a todos los hijos de Israel, el pueblo alzó su voz y lloró. Por eso llamaron a aquel lugar Boquim[b]. Y ofrecieron allí sacrificios al SEÑOR.

Fin de la generación de Josué

Cuando Josué ya había despedido al pueblo, los hijos de Israel se fueron cada uno a su heredad para tomar posesión de la tierra. El pueblo sirvió al SEÑOR todo el tiempo de Josué y todo el tiempo de los ancianos que sobrevivieron a Josué, quienes habían visto todas las grandes obras que el SEÑOR había hecho por Israel.

Josué hijo de Nun, siervo del SEÑOR, murió cuando tenía ciento diez años. Y lo sepultaron en el terreno de su heredad en Timnat-séraj[c], en la región montañosa de Efraín, al norte del monte Gaas. 10 Y toda aquella generación fue también reunida con sus padres.

Apostasía y aflicción de Israel

Después de ellos se levantó otra generación que no conocía al SEÑOR ni la obra que él había hecho por Israel. 11 Los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR y sirvieron a los Baales. 12 Abandonaron al SEÑOR, el Dios de sus padres, que los había sacado de la tierra de Egipto, y se fueron tras otros dioses, entre los dioses de los pueblos que estaban en sus alrededores, a los cuales adoraron; y provocaron a ira al SEÑOR. 13 Abandonaron al SEÑOR, y sirvieron a Baal y a las Astartes. 14 El furor del SEÑOR se encendió contra Israel, y los entregó en mano de asaltantes que los saqueaban. Los abandonó en mano de sus enemigos de alrededor, y ellos no pudieron resistir más ante sus enemigos. 15 Dondequiera que salían, la mano del SEÑOR estaba contra ellos para mal, como el SEÑOR les había dicho y como el SEÑOR les había jurado. Así los afligió en gran manera.

Surgimiento de los jueces

16 Entonces el SEÑOR levantó jueces que los libraran de mano de los que los saqueaban. 17 Pero tampoco escuchaban a sus jueces, sino que se prostituían tras otros dioses a los cuales adoraban. Se apartaron pronto del camino por el que habían andado sus padres, quienes habían obedecido los mandamientos del SEÑOR. Ellos no lo hicieron así.

18 Cuando el SEÑOR les levantaba jueces, el SEÑOR estaba con el juez y los libraba de mano de sus enemigos todo el tiempo de aquel juez. Porque el SEÑOR se conmovía ante sus gemidos, a causa de los que los oprimían y afligían. 19 Pero acontecía que cuando moría el juez, ellos volvían atrás y se corrompían más que sus padres, siguiendo a otros dioses para servirles y para postrarse ante ellos. No se apartaban de sus obras ni de su obstinado camino.

Pueblos dejados en medio de Israel

20 Entonces el furor del SEÑOR se encendió contra Israel, y dijo: “Puesto que este pueblo ha quebrantado mi pacto que yo establecí con sus padres, y no ha obedecido mi voz, 21 tampoco yo volveré a echar de delante de ellos a ninguna de las naciones que Josué dejó cuando murió, 22 para que por medio de ellas yo pruebe si Israel va a guardar o no el camino del SEÑOR andando por él, como sus padres lo guardaron”.

23 Por eso el SEÑOR dejó allí a aquellas naciones y no las arrojó de una vez ni las entregó en mano de Josué.
