16 參孫往迦薩去，在那裡看見一個妓女，就進去與她親近。 2 有人告訴迦薩人說：“參孫到這裡來了。”他們就把他圍住，整夜在城門口埋伏著，整夜默不作聲，心裡說：“等到早晨天亮，我們才殺他。” 3 參孫睡到半夜，就在半夜起來，抓緊城門的門扇和兩邊門柱，把它們與門閂一起拔起來，放在自己的肩頭上，扛到希伯崙對面的山頂去。

4 後來參孫在梭烈谷又愛上了一個婦人，名叫大利拉。 5 非利士人的領袖上到婦人那裡去，對她說：“請你引誘他，看看他因甚麼緣故有這樣大的力氣，我們用甚麼方法才能勝過他，把他捆綁，好制伏他；我們每人就給你十二公斤銀子。” 6 大利拉對參孫說：“求你告訴我，你因甚麼緣故有這樣大的力氣，要用甚麼方法才能捆綁你，好把你制伏。” 7 參孫對她說：“如果人用七條未乾的青繩子捆綁我，我就會軟弱無力，像平常人一樣。” 8 於是非利士人的領袖把七條未乾的青繩子，帶上來給那婦人，她就用那些繩子把參孫捆綁起來。 9 有人埋伏在她的內室裡等候著；她對參孫說：“參孫哪，非利士人上來捉你了！”參孫就掙斷繩子，像麻線被火燒斷一樣。這樣，他力氣的由來，還是沒有人知道。

15 大利拉對參孫說：“你既然對我不真心，你怎能說：‘我愛你’？你這三次作弄我，沒有告訴我你這麼大的力氣是哪裡來的。” 16 大利拉天天用話逼他，催他，以致他的心煩得要死。 17 參孫就把他心中的一切告訴了她，對她說：“向來沒有人用剃刀剃過我的頭，因為我自出母胎就歸　神作拿細耳人，如果人剃去我的頭髮，我的力氣就離開了我，我就軟弱無力，像所有人一樣。”

28 參孫呼求耶和華，說：“主耶和華啊，求你記念我；　神啊，求你加強我這一次的力量，只這一次罷了，使我盡一次在非利士人身上報那剜我雙眼的仇！” 29 參孫就抱住那支撐著房子中間的兩根柱子，右手抱一根，左手抱一根。 30 然後參孫說：“讓我與非利士人同歸於盡吧！”於是盡力屈身，房子就倒塌，壓在眾領袖和房子裡所有的人身上。這樣，參孫死的時候殺死的人，比他活著的時候殺死的人還多。 31 參孫的眾兄弟和他父親的全家都下來，收殮他的屍體，把他抬上去，埋葬在瑣拉和以實陶之間，在他父親瑪挪亞的墳墓裡。參孫治理了以色列人二十年。

Simson i Gaza

16 Simson begav sig till Gaza. Där fick han se en prostituerad och gick in till henne. 2 När folket i Gaza fick höra att Simson hade kommit dit, omringade de platsen och låg i bakhåll för honom hela natten vid stadsporten. De höll sig stilla hela natten och tänkte: ”I morgon, vid gryningen, ska vi döda honom.”

3 Simson låg där till midnatt. Då steg han upp och grep tag i stadsportens dörrar och i de båda dörrposterna, ryckte loss dem tillsammans med bommen och lade allt på sina axlar och bar upp det till toppen på berget mitt emot Hebron.

Simson och Delila

4 Senare blev han kär i en kvinna i Sorekdalen. Hennes namn var Delila. 5 (A) Filisteernas furstar kom då upp till henne och sade: ”Förför honom och se var han får sin styrka ifrån och hur vi ska få makt över honom, så att vi kan binda honom och kuva honom. Då ska vi var och en ge dig ettusenetthundra siklar silver[a].”

6 Delila sade till Simson: ”Säg mig: Var får du din styrka ifrån? Hur man kan binda dig och kuva dig?” 7 Simson svarade henne: ”Om man binder mig med sju färska senor[b] som inte har hunnit torka, så blir jag svag som en vanlig människa.”

8 Filisteernas furstar kom upp till henne med sju färska bågsträngar som inte hade hunnit torka, och hon band honom med dem. 9 Hon hade lagt folk i bakhåll i den inre kammaren. Så ropade hon till honom: ”Filisteerna är över dig, Simson!” Då slet han av bågsträngarna lika lätt som en lingarnstråd slits sönder när den kommer nära elden. Och hemligheten till hans styrka blev inte röjd.

10 Delila sade då till Simson: ”Du har lurat mig och ljugit för mig! Tala nu om för mig hur man kan binda dig.” 11 Han svarade henne: ”Om man binder mig med nya rep som aldrig använts, så blir jag svag som en vanlig människa.” 12 Delila tog nya rep och band honom med dem och ropade till honom: ”Filisteerna är över dig, Simson!” Och män låg i bakhåll i den inre kammaren. Men han slet av repen från sina armar som om de vore trådar.

13 Då sade Delila till Simson: ”Hittills har du lurat mig och ljugit för mig. Säg mig nu hur man kan binda dig.” Han svarade henne: ”Jo, om du väver in de sju flätorna på mitt huvud i varpen till din väv.” 14 Hon slog då fast dem med pluggen och ropade sedan till honom: ”Filisteerna är över dig, Simson!” När han vaknade ur sömnen ryckte han loss vävpluggen tillsammans med varpen till väven.

15 Då sade hon till honom: ”Hur kan du säga att du älskar mig när du inte ger mig ditt hjärta? Tre gånger har du lurat mig och inte sagt mig var du får din styrka ifrån.” 16 (B) När hon nu dag efter dag ansatte honom och plågade honom med sina ord, blev han så otålig att han kunde dö. 17 (C) Då öppnade han hela sitt hjärta för henne och sade: ”Ingen rakkniv har rört mitt huvud, för jag är en Guds nasir ända från moderlivet. Om man rakar av mig håret, viker min styrka ifrån mig och jag blir svag som alla andra människor.” 18 När Delila insåg att han hade avslöjat hela sin hemlighet för henne, sände hon bud och kallade till sig filisteernas furstar och sade: ”Kom upp hit en gång till, för nu har han avslöjat hela sin hemlighet för mig.” Då kom filisteernas furstar upp till henne och hade med sig pengarna.

19 Hon fick honom att somna i sitt knä. Sedan kallade hon till sig en man som på hennes befallning skar av de sju flätorna på hans huvud. Då började hon få makt över honom, och hans styrka vek ifrån honom. 20 Därefter ropade hon: ”Filisteerna är över dig, Simson!” Han vaknade upp ur sömnen och tänkte: ”Jag gör mig väl fri nu som förut och skakar mig loss.” Men han visste inte att Herren hade lämnat honom. 21 (D) Och filisteerna grep honom och stack ut ögonen på honom.

Därefter förde de honom ner till Gaza och band honom med kopparkedjor, och han blev satt att mala i fängelset.[c] 22 Men hans huvudhår började växa ut igen sedan det rakats av.

Simson dör

23 Filisteernas furstar samlades för att hålla en stor offerfest åt sin gud Dagon[d] och fira. De sade: ”Vår gud har gett vår fiende Simson i vår hand.” 24 Och när folket såg honom, lovade de sin gud och sade: ”Vår gud har gett vår fiende i vår hand, honom som ödelade vårt land och dödade så många av oss.” 25 När nu deras hjärtan hade blivit glada, sade de: ”Hämta Simson så att han kan roa oss.” Och Simson hämtades ur fängelset och måste roa dem. De ställde honom mellan pelarna.

26 Då sade Simson till pojken som höll honom i handen: ”Släpp mig och låt mig få hålla i pelarna som huset vilar på och luta mig mot dem.” 27 Huset var fullt med män och kvinnor, och alla filisteernas furstar var där. På taket fanns omkring tretusen män och kvinnor som såg på medan Simson roade dem.

28 (E) Men Simson ropade till Herren: ”Herre Gud, tänk på mig och styrk mig bara denna gång, o Gud. Låt mig få hämnd på filisteerna för ett av mina båda ögon.” 29 Därefter tog Simson i de båda mittpelarna som huset vilade på och tryckte sig mot dem, med högra handen mot den ena pelaren och med vänstra handen mot den andra. 30 Och Simson sade: ”Låt mig dö med filisteerna!” Sedan böjde han sig framåt med sådan kraft att huset rasade över furstarna och allt folket som fanns där. De som han dödade vid sin död var fler än de som han hade dödat medan han levde.

31 (F) Och hans bröder och hela hans familj kom dit ner och tog honom med sig hem och begravde honom mellan Sorga och Eshtaol, i hans far Manoas grav. Han hade då varit domare i Israel i tjugo år.[e]

Samson’s Downfall

16 Samson went to Gaza. There he saw a prostitute and slept with her.[a] 2 The Gazites were told,[b] “Samson has come here!” So they surrounded the town[c] and hid all night at the city gate, waiting for him to leave.[d] They relaxed[e] all night, thinking,[f] “He will not leave[g] until morning comes;[h] then we will kill him!” 3 Samson spent half the night with the prostitute; then he got up in the middle of the night and left.[i] He grabbed the doors of the city gate, as well as the two posts, and pulled them right off, bar and all.[j] He put them on his shoulders and carried them up to the top of a hill east of Hebron.[k]

4 After this Samson fell in love with a woman named Delilah, who lived in the Sorek Valley. 5 The rulers of the Philistines went up to visit her and said to her, “Trick him! Find out what makes him so strong and how we can subdue him and humiliate[l] him. Each one of us will give you 1,100 silver pieces.”

6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Tell me what makes you so strong and how you can be subdued and humiliated.”[m] 7 Samson said to her, “If they tie me up with seven fresh[n] bowstrings[o] that have not been dried, I will become weak and be just like any other man.” 8 So the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings that had not been dried, and she tied him up with them. 9 They hid[p] in the bedroom and then she said to him, “The Philistines are here,[q] Samson!” He snapped the bowstrings as easily as a thread of yarn snaps when it is put close to fire.[r] The secret of his strength was not discovered.[s]

10 Delilah said to Samson, “Look, you deceived[t] me and told me lies! Now tell me how you can be subdued.” 11 He said to her, “If they tie me tightly with brand new ropes that have never been used,[u] I will become weak and be just like any other man.” 12 So Delilah took new ropes and tied him with them and said to him, “The Philistines are here,[v] Samson!” (The Philistines were hiding in the bedroom.)[w] But he tore the ropes[x] from his arms as if they were a piece of thread.

13 Delilah said to Samson, “Up to now you have deceived me and told me lies. Tell me how you can be subdued.” He said to her, “If you weave the seven braids of my hair[y] into the fabric on the loom[z] and secure it with the pin, I will become weak and be like any other man.” 14 So she made him go to sleep, wove the seven braids of his hair into the fabric on the loom, fastened it with the pin, and said to him, “The Philistines are here,[aa] Samson!”[ab] He woke up[ac] and tore away the pin of the loom and the fabric.

15 She said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when you will not share your secret with me?[ad] Three times you have deceived me and have not told me what makes you so strong.” 16 She nagged him[ae] every day and pressured him until he was sick to death of it.[af] 17 Finally he told her his secret.[ag] He said to her, “My hair has never been cut,[ah] for I have been dedicated to God[ai] from the time I was conceived.[aj] If my head[ak] were shaved, my strength would leave me; I would become weak and be just like all other men.” 18 When Delilah saw that he had told her his secret,[al] she sent for[am] the rulers of the Philistines, saying, “Come up here again, for he has told me[an] his secret.”[ao] So the rulers of the Philistines went up to visit her, bringing the silver in their hands. 19 She made him go to sleep on her lap[ap] and then called a man in to shave off[aq] the seven braids of his hair.[ar] She made him vulnerable[as] and his strength left him. 20 She said, “The Philistines are here,[at] Samson!” He woke up[au] and thought,[av] “I will do as I did before[aw] and shake myself free.” But he did not realize that the Lord had left him. 21 The Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes. They brought him down to Gaza and bound him in bronze chains. He became a grinder in the prison. 22 His hair[ax] began to grow back after it had been shaved off.

Samson’s Death and Burial

23 The rulers of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god and to celebrate. They said, “Our god has handed Samson, our enemy, over to us.” 24 When the people saw him,[ay] they praised their god, saying, “Our god has handed our enemy over to us, the one who ruined our land and killed so many of us!”[az]

25 When they really started celebrating,[ba] they said, “Call for Samson so he can entertain us!” So they summoned Samson from the prison and he entertained them.[bb] They made him stand between two pillars. 26 Samson said to the young man who held his hand, “Position me so I can touch the pillars that support the temple.[bc] Then I can lean on them.” 27 Now the temple[bd] was filled with men and women, and all the rulers of the Philistines were there. There were 3,000 men and women on the roof watching Samson entertain. 28 Samson called to the Lord, “O Sovereign Lord,[be] remember me! Strengthen me just one more time, O God, so I can get swift revenge[bf] against the Philistines for my two eyes!” 29 Samson took hold of the two middle pillars that supported the temple[bg] and he leaned against them, with his right hand on one and his left hand on the other. 30 Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” He pushed hard,[bh] and the temple collapsed on the rulers and all the people in it. He killed many more people in his death than he had killed during his life.[bi] 31 His brothers and all his family[bj] went down and brought him back.[bk] They buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had led[bl] Israel for twenty years.

Judges 16:14 tc The MT of vv. 13b-14a reads simply, “He said to her, ‘If you weave the seven braids of my head with the web.’ And she fastened with the pin and said to him.” The additional words in the translation, “and secure it with the pin, I will become weak and be like any other man.’ 16:14 So she made him go to sleep, wove the seven braids of his hair into the fabric on the loom,” which without doubt represent the original text, are supplied from the ancient Greek version. (In both vv. 13b and 14a the Greek version has “to the wall” after “with the pin,” but this is an interpretive addition that reflects a misunderstanding of ancient weaving equipment. See G. F. Moore, Judges [ICC], 353-54.) The Hebrew textual tradition was accidentally shortened during the copying process. A scribe’s eye jumped from the first instance of “with the web” to the second, causing him to leave out inadvertently the intervening words.
  29. Judges 16:14 tn The Hebrew adds, “from his sleep.” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.
  30. Judges 16:15 tn Heb “when your heart is not with me.”
  31. Judges 16:16 tn Heb “forced him with her words.”
  32. Judges 16:16 tn Heb “and his spirit was short [i.e., impatient] to the point of death.”
  33. Judges 16:17 tn Heb “all his heart.”
  34. Judges 16:17 tn Heb “a razor has not come upon my head.”
  35. Judges 16:17 tn Or “set apart to God.” Traditionally the Hebrew term נָזִיר (nazir) has been translated “Nazirite.” The word is derived from the verb נָזַר (nazar, “to dedicate; to consecrate; to set apart”).
  36. Judges 16:17 tn Heb “from the womb of my mother.”
  37. Judges 16:17 tn Heb “I.” The referent has been made more specific in the translation (“my head”).
  38. Judges 16:18 tn Heb “all his heart.”
  39. Judges 16:18 tn Heb “she sent and summoned.”
  40. Judges 16:18 tc The translation follows the Qere, לִי (li, “to me”) rather than the Kethib, לָהּ (lah, “to her”).
  41. Judges 16:18 tn Heb “all his heart.”
  42. Judges 16:19 tn Heb “on her knees.” The expression is probably euphemistic for sexual intercourse. See HALOT 160-61 s.v. בֶּרֶךְ.
  43. Judges 16:19 tn Heb “she called for a man and she shaved off.” The point seems to be that Delilah acted through the instrumentality of the man. See J. A. Soggin, Judges (OTL), 254.
  44. Judges 16:19 tn Heb “head.” By metonymy the hair of his head is meant.
  45. Judges 16:19 tn Heb “She began to humiliate him.” Rather than referring to some specific insulting action on Delilah’s part after Samson’s hair was shaved off, this statement probably means that she, through the devious actions just described, began the process of Samson’s humiliation which culminates in the following verses.
  46. Judges 16:20 tn Heb “are upon you.”
  47. Judges 16:20 tn The Hebrew adds, “from his sleep.” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.
  48. Judges 16:20 tn Heb “and said.”
  49. Judges 16:20 tn Heb “I will go out as before.”

  51. Judges 16:24 tn Most interpret this as a reference to Samson, but this seems premature, since v. 25 suggests he was not yet standing before them. Consequently some prefer to see this statement as displaced and move it to v. 25 (see C. F. Burney, Judges, 387). It seems more likely that the pronoun refers to an image of Dagon.
  52. Judges 16:24 tn Heb “multiplied our dead.”
  53. Judges 16:25 tn Heb “When their heart was good.”
  54. Judges 16:25 tn Heb “before them.”
  55. Judges 16:26 tn Heb “the pillars upon which the house is founded.”
  56. Judges 16:27 tn Heb “house.”
  57. Judges 16:28 tn The Hebrew has אֲדֹנָי יֱהֹוִה (ʾadonay yehovih, “Lord Yahweh”).
