14 参孙下到亭拿，在那里看见一个女子，是非利士人的女儿。 2 参孙上来禀告他父母说：“我在亭拿看见一个女子，是非利士人的女儿，愿你们给我娶来为妻。” 3 他父母说：“在你弟兄的女儿中，或在本国的民中，岂没有一个女子？何至你去在未受割礼的非利士人中娶妻呢？”参孙对他父亲说：“愿你给我娶那女子，因我喜悦她。” 4 他的父母却不知道这事是出于耶和华，因为他找机会攻击非利士人。那时，非利士人辖制以色列人。

5 参孙跟他父母下亭拿去，到了亭拿的葡萄园，见有一只少壮狮子向他吼叫。 6 耶和华的灵大大感动参孙，他虽然手无器械，却将狮子撕裂，如同撕裂山羊羔一样。他行这事并没有告诉父母。 7 参孙下去与女子说话，就喜悦她。 8 过了些日子，再下去要娶那女子，转向道旁要看死狮，见有一群蜂子和蜜在死狮之内， 9 就用手取蜜，且吃且走。到了父母那里，给他父母，他们也吃了，只是没有告诉这蜜是从死狮之内取来的。

10 他父亲下去见女子。参孙在那里设摆筵宴，因为向来少年人都有这个规矩。 11 众人看见参孙，就请了三十个人陪伴他。 12 参孙对他们说：“我给你们出一个谜语，你们在七日筵宴之内，若能猜出意思告诉我，我就给你们三十件里衣，三十套衣裳。 13 你们若不能猜出意思告诉我，你们就给我三十件里衣，三十套衣裳。”他们说：“请将谜语说给我们听。” 14 参孙对他们说：“吃的从吃者出来，甜的从强者出来。”他们三日不能猜出谜语的意思。
15 到第七天，他们对参孙的妻说：“你诓哄你丈夫，探出谜语的意思告诉我们，免得我们用火烧你和你父家。你们请了我们来，是要夺我们所有的吗？” 16 参孙的妻在丈夫面前啼哭说：“你是恨我，不是爱我。你给我本国的人出谜语，却没有将意思告诉我。”参孙回答说：“连我父母我都没有告诉，岂可告诉你呢？” 17 七日筵宴之内，她在丈夫面前啼哭，到第七天逼着他，他才将谜语的意思告诉他妻，他妻就告诉本国的人。 18 到第七天，日头未落以前，那城里的人对参孙说：“有什么比蜜还甜呢？有什么比狮子还强呢？”参孙对他们说：“你们若非用我的母牛犊耕地，就猜不出我谜语的意思来。” 19 耶和华的灵大大感动参孙，他就下到亚实基伦，击杀了三十个人，夺了他们的衣裳，将衣裳给了猜出谜语的人。参孙发怒，就上父家去了。 20 参孙的妻便归了参孙的陪伴，就是做过他朋友的。

14 參孫下到亭拿，在那裡看中了一個非利士女子。 2 他回到家裡便對父母說：「我在亭拿看中一個非利士女子，把她給我娶來做妻子吧！」 3 他父母說：「難道我們的親族和同胞中，沒有一個令你滿意的女子嗎？你為什麼要娶未受割禮的非利士人的女子呢？」參孫卻說：「我很喜歡她，請給我把她娶過來吧！」
4 他的父母不知道這事是出於耶和華的旨意，祂要找機會對付非利士人。那時，非利士人統治著以色列。
5 參孫跟父母一起去亭拿，走到亭拿的葡萄園時，有一頭壯獅吼叫著撲向他。 6 耶和華的靈降在參孫身上，他雖然手無寸鐵，竟撕裂了那頭獅子，就像撕裂一隻山羊羔一樣。他沒有把這事告訴父母。 7 到了亭拿，參孫跟那女子交談，很喜歡她。 8 過了些日子，參孫下去迎娶她，途中他順便去看那隻死獅子，見死獅子體內有一群蜜蜂和一些蜂蜜， 9 就用手取了一些蜜，邊走邊吃。到了父母那裡，他給了他們一些，他們也吃了。但他沒有告訴父母蜂蜜是從死獅子體內取的。
10 參孫的父親去那女子家，參孫按習俗擺設宴席。 11 眾人看見參孫，就安排了三十個人陪他。 12 參孫對他們說：「我出一個謎語，如果你們可以在這七天的婚宴期間猜出來，我就送你們三十件細麻衣和三十件外袍。 13 如果猜不中，你們就要給我三十件細麻衣和三十件外袍。」他們說：「請你出謎語吧！」 14 參孫說：
「食物出自食者，
甜物出自強者。」
三天過後，他們仍然猜不出來。
15 到了第四天，他們對參孫的妻子說：「你要哄你的丈夫把謎底說出來，不然我們就把你和你父親一家全燒死。你們邀請我們來，難道是要叫我們傾家蕩產嗎？」 16 於是，參孫的妻子向他哭訴說：「你是恨我，不是愛我。你給我的族人出了謎語，卻沒有告訴我謎底。」參孫回答說：「我連父母都沒有告訴，又怎能告訴你呢？」 17 在七天的婚宴期間，她一直在丈夫跟前哭哭啼啼。到了第七天，參孫經不住妻子的催逼就把謎底告訴了她。她把謎底告訴了她的族人。 18 在第七天日落之前，城裡的人對參孫說：
「有什麼比蜂蜜更甜？
有什麼比獅子更強？」
參孫說：
「你們若不是利用我的小母牛耕田，
肯定猜不出來。」
19 耶和華的靈降在參孫身上，他便去亞實基倫殺了三十個人，擄走他們的衣服，交給猜中謎語的那些人，然後怒氣沖沖地回父親家去了。 20 參孫的妻子後來歸了他的伴郎。

Samson’s Marriage
14 Samson(A) went down to Timnah(B) and saw there a young Philistine woman. 2 When he returned, he said to his father and mother, “I have seen a Philistine woman in Timnah; now get her for me as my wife.”(C)
3 His father and mother replied, “Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people?(D) Must you go to the uncircumcised(E) Philistines to get a wife?(F)”
But Samson said to his father, “Get her for me. She’s the right one for me.” 4 (His parents did not know that this was from the Lord,(G) who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines;(H) for at that time they were ruling over Israel.)(I)
5 Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. 6 The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him(J) so that he tore the lion apart(K) with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done. 7 Then he went down and talked with the woman, and he liked her.
8 Some time later, when he went back to marry her, he turned aside to look at the lion’s carcass, and in it he saw a swarm of bees and some honey. 9 He scooped out the honey with his hands and ate as he went along. When he rejoined his parents, he gave them some, and they too ate it. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey from the lion’s carcass.
10 Now his father went down to see the woman. And there Samson held a feast,(L) as was customary for young men. 11 When the people saw him, they chose thirty men to be his companions.
12 “Let me tell you a riddle,(M)” Samson said to them. “If you can give me the answer within the seven days of the feast,(N) I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.(O) 13 If you can’t tell me the answer, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.”
“Tell us your riddle,” they said. “Let’s hear it.”
14 He replied,
“Out of the eater, something to eat;
out of the strong, something sweet.”(P)
For three days they could not give the answer.
15 On the fourth[a] day, they said to Samson’s wife, “Coax(Q) your husband into explaining the riddle for us, or we will burn you and your father’s household to death.(R) Did you invite us here to steal our property?”
16 Then Samson’s wife threw herself on him, sobbing, “You hate me! You don’t really love me.(S) You’ve given my people a riddle, but you haven’t told me the answer.”
“I haven’t even explained it to my father or mother,” he replied, “so why should I explain it to you?” 17 She cried the whole seven days(T) of the feast. So on the seventh day he finally told her, because she continued to press him. She in turn explained the riddle to her people.
18 Before sunset on the seventh day the men of the town said to him,
“What is sweeter than honey?
What is stronger than a lion?”(U)
Samson said to them,
“If you had not plowed with my heifer,
you would not have solved my riddle.”
19 Then the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.(V) He went down to Ashkelon,(W) struck down thirty of their men, stripped them of everything and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. Burning with anger,(X) he returned to his father’s home. 20 And Samson’s wife was given to one of his companions(Y) who had attended him at the feast.

8 And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion.
9 And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion.
10 So his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.
11 And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
12 And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:
13 But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.
14 And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.
15 And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson's wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father's house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?
16 And Samson's wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
17 And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.
18 And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion? and he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.
19 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father's house.
20 But Samson's wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.
