瓦器中的寶貝
4 我們既蒙憐憫，接受了這傳福音的職分，就決不氣餒。 2 我們棄絕了見不得人的可恥行為，不用狡詐的手段，不曲解上帝的道，而是把真理講解明白，好讓大家的良心在上帝面前為我們作證。
3 然而，即使我們所傳的福音被遮蔽，也是在那些滅亡的人當中被遮蔽。 4 那些不信的人是被這世界的神弄瞎了心眼，以致看不見基督榮耀的福音之光。基督是上帝的本像。 5 我們並非傳揚自己，而是傳揚耶穌基督是主，並且為耶穌的緣故而作你們的奴僕。 6 因為那吩咐光從黑暗中照射出來的上帝光照了我們的心，為要讓我們認識上帝在耶穌基督的面容上所彰顯的榮耀。
7 我們不過是瓦器，裡面卻有這寶貝，要顯明這莫大的能力是上帝的，而不是我們自己的。 8 我們壓力重重，卻沒有崩潰；心裡困惑，卻不絕望； 9 遭受迫害，卻沒有被遺棄；被打倒了，卻沒有死亡。 10 我們身上常常帶著耶穌的死，好使耶穌的生命也彰顯在我們身上。 11 因為我們這些活著的人常常為耶穌的緣故而面臨死亡的威脅，好使耶穌的生命在我們這終有一死的肉身上彰顯出來。 12 因此，死亡籠罩著我們，而生命卻運行在你們身上。
13 聖經上說：「我相信，所以才說。」我們有同樣的信心，我們也相信，所以才這樣說。 14 我們知道，使主耶穌復活的上帝必使我們與耶穌一同復活，並且使我們和你們一起站在祂面前。 15 其實一切都是為了你們，好叫恩典臨到更多的人，有更多人向上帝感恩，使上帝得榮耀。
16 所以，我們不氣餒。身體雖然日漸衰殘，內在的生命卻日日更新。 17 我們這短暫輕微的苦難正在為我們成就極大無比、永遠的榮耀。 18 我們注重的，並非看得見的事物，而是看不見的事物，因為看得見的事物都是暫時的，看不見的事物才是永恆的。

4 It is God himself, in his mercy, who has given us this wonderful work of telling his Good News to others,[a] and so we never give up. 2 We do not try to trick people into believing—we are not interested in fooling anyone. We never try to get anyone to believe that the Bible teaches what it doesn’t. All such shameful methods we forego. We stand in the presence of God as we speak and so we tell the truth, as all who know us will agree.
3 If the Good News we preach is hidden to anyone, it is hidden from the one who is on the road to eternal death. 4 Satan, who is the god of this evil world, has made him blind, unable to see the glorious light of the Gospel that is shining upon him or to understand the amazing message we preach about the glory of Christ, who is God.[b] 5 We don’t go around preaching about ourselves but about Christ Jesus as Lord. All we say of ourselves is that we are your slaves because of what Jesus has done for us. 6 For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made us understand that it is the brightness of his glory that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.
7 But this precious treasure—this light and power that now shine within us[c]—is held in a perishable container, that is, in our weak bodies. Everyone can see that the glorious power within must be from God and is not our own.
8 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but not crushed and broken. We are perplexed because we don’t know why things happen as they do, but we don’t give up and quit. 9 We are hunted down, but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up again and keep going. 10 These bodies of ours are constantly facing death just as Jesus did; so it is clear to all that it is only the living Christ within who keeps us safe.[d]
11 Yes, we live under constant danger to our lives because we serve the Lord, but this gives us constant opportunities to show forth the power of Jesus Christ within our dying bodies. 12 Because of our preaching we face death, but it has resulted in eternal life for you.
13 We boldly say what we believe, trusting God to care for us,[e] just as the psalm writer did when he said, “I believe and therefore I speak.” 14 We know that the same God who brought the Lord Jesus back from death will also bring us back to life again with Jesus and present us to him along with you. 15 These sufferings of ours are for your benefit. And the more of you who are won to Christ, the more there are to thank him for his great kindness, and the more the Lord is glorified.
16 That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our inner strength in the Lord is growing every day. 17 These troubles and sufferings of ours are, after all, quite small and won’t last very long. Yet this short time of distress will result in God’s richest blessing upon us forever and ever! 18 So we do not look at what we can see right now, the troubles all around us, but we look forward to the joys in heaven which we have not yet seen. The troubles will soon be over, but the joys to come will last forever.

De kracht van God in het leven van de gelovigen
4 God was zo goed om ons de taak te geven de mensen over dit nieuwe verbond te vertellen. En omdat Hij ons die taak heeft gegeven, geven we nooit op. 2 Daarom blijven we ook ver uit de buurt van alles wat het daglicht niet kan verdragen. We doen niets waarvoor we ons zouden moeten schamen. We hebben het woord van God ook niet verdraaid om de mensen over te halen in Jezus te gaan geloven of om daar zelf voordeel van te hebben. Maar we spreken helder en duidelijk de waarheid. Zo kunnen we God en mensen recht in de ogen kijken. Zó vertellen we het goede nieuws aan de mensen. 3 Toch zijn er altijd mensen bij wie er dan een 'doek' over hun hart blijft liggen. Daardoor kunnen ze het goede nieuws niet begrijpen. Maar dat gebeurt alleen bij de mensen die verloren gaan. 4 Dat zijn de ongelovige mensen. Zij zijn door de god van deze wereld blind gemaakt in hun denken. Daardoor kunnen ze het licht niet zien van het goede nieuws van Christus. Terwijl juist aan Christus precies te zien is wie God is. Hij is de afbeelding van God.
5 We vertellen de mensen niet dat wij zélf belangrijk zijn. Nee, we vertellen hun dat Jezus Christus de Heer is. Wijzelf zijn alleen maar jullie dienaren. Want dat wil Jezus. 6 Want de God die heeft gezegd dat er licht moest gaan schijnen in het donker,[a] heeft het licht in ons hart laten schijnen: we zagen dat in Jezus Christus de macht en majesteit van God te zien is.
7 Dat we dat nu begrijpen is als een kostbare schat. Maar die schat zit in een breekbare kruik (= ons lichaam). De kracht die in ons is en die groter is dan elke andere kracht, is niet onze eigen kracht. Het is Gods kracht in ons. 8 We zijn wel in moeilijkheden, maar door zijn kracht zitten we nooit helemaal klem. We hebben wel raad nodig, maar door zijn kracht zijn we nooit wanhopig. 9 We worden wel vervolgd, maar door zijn kracht laat God ons nooit in de steek. We worden wel vertrapt, maar door zijn kracht staan we telkens weer op. 10 Elke dag dragen we de dood van de Heer Jezus in ons lichaam mee. Alleen zó kan het leven van Jezus in ons lichaam zichtbaar worden.[b] 11 Aldoor is ons leven in gevaar, vanwege ons geloof in Jezus. Maar zo kan ook aldoor het leven van Christus in ons sterfelijk lichaam zichtbaar worden. 12 Zo kijken wij aldoor de dood in de ogen. Maar het gevolg is wel dat júllie eeuwig leven hebben!
13 Maar wij zijn net zo vol van geloof als de man die in de Boeken schreef: "Ik geloof, daarom heb ik ook gesproken." Wij geloven ook, en daarom spreken we ook. 14 Want we weten dat God de Heer Jezus uit de dood heeft teruggeroepen en weer levend heeft gemaakt. Daarom zal Hij ook óns samen met Hem uit de dood terugroepen en weer levend maken. Wij zullen samen met jullie voor zijn troon komen te staan. 15 Want wíj maken al deze moeilijkheden mee omdat dat goed is voor júllie. Zo zullen steeds meer mensen zien hoe goed God is. En zo zullen steeds meer mensen God prijzen.
16 Daarom geven we nooit op. Ons lichaam wordt wel steeds ouder en zwakker, maar onze geest wordt elke dag gesterkt. 17 De moeilijkheden van dit moment zijn niet erg en duren maar kort, als je ze vergelijkt met de heerlijke, eeuwige dingen die we daardoor nog zullen krijgen. Dat maakt alles goed. 18 Maar dan moeten we niet letten op de zichtbare dingen, maar op de onzichtbare dingen. Want de zichtbare dingen zijn tijdelijk, maar de onzichtbare dingen zijn eeuwig.
