11 Imitate me as I imitate Christ.

Advice about Worship

I praise you for always thinking about me and for carefully following the traditions that I handed down to you.

However, I want you to realize that Christ has authority over every man, a husband has authority over his wife, and God has authority over Christ. Every man who covers his head when he prays or speaks what God has revealed dishonors the one who has authority over him. Every woman who prays or speaks what God has revealed and has her head uncovered while she speaks dishonors the one who has authority over her. She is like the woman who has her head shaved. So if a woman doesn’t cover her head, she should cut off her hair. If it’s a disgrace for a woman to cut off her hair or shave her head, she should cover her head. A man should not cover his head. He is God’s image and glory. The woman, however, is man’s glory. Clearly, man wasn’t made from woman but woman from man. Man wasn’t created for woman but woman for man. 10 Therefore, a woman should wear something on her head to show she is under someone’s authority, out of respect for the angels.

11 Yet, as believers in the Lord, women couldn’t exist without men and men couldn’t exist without women. 12 As a woman came into existence from a man, so men come into existence by women, but everything comes from God.

13 Judge your own situation. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Doesn’t nature itself teach you that it is disgraceful for a man to have long hair? 15 Doesn’t it teach you that it is a woman’s pride to wear her hair long? Her hair is given to her in place of a covering. 16 If anyone wants to argue about this they can’t, because we don’t have any custom like this—nor do any of the churches of God.

17 I have no praise for you as I instruct you in the following matter: When you gather, it results in more harm than good. 18 In the first place, I hear that when you gather as a church you split up into opposing groups. I believe some of what I hear. 19 Factions have to exist in order to make it clear who the genuine believers among you are.

20 When you gather in the same place, you can’t possibly be eating the Lord’s Supper. 21 Each of you eats his own supper without waiting for each other. So one person goes hungry and another gets drunk. 22 Don’t you have homes in which to eat and drink? Do you despise God’s church and embarrass people who don’t have anything to eat? What can I say to you? Should I praise you? I won’t praise you for this. 23 After all, I passed on to you what I had received from the Lord.

On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Yeshua took bread 24 and spoke a prayer of thanksgiving. He broke the bread and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.” 25 When supper was over, he did the same with the cup. He said, “This cup is the new promise[a] made with my blood. Every time you drink from it, do it to remember me.” 26 Every time you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you tell about the Lord’s death until he comes.

27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks from the Lord’s cup in an improper way will be held responsible for the Lord’s body and blood. 28 With this in mind, individuals must determine whether what they are doing is proper when they eat the bread and drink from the cup. 29 Anyone who eats and drinks is eating and drinking a judgment against himself when he doesn’t recognize the Lord’s body.

30 This is the reason why many of you are weak and sick and quite a number of you have died. 31 If we were judging ourselves correctly, we would not be judged. 32 But when the Lord judges us, he disciplines us so that we won’t be condemned along with the rest of the world.

33 Therefore, brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, wait for each other. 34 Whoever is hungry should eat at home so that you don’t have a gathering that brings judgment on you.

I will give directions concerning the other matters when I come.

On Covering the Head in Worship

I praise you(C) for remembering me in everything(D) and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you.(E) But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ,(F) and the head of the woman is man,[a](G) and the head of Christ is God.(H) Every man who prays or prophesies(I) with his head covered dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies(J) with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.(K) For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.

A man ought not to cover his head,[b] since he is the image(L) and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man;(M) neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.(N) 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own[c] head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.(O)

13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God.(P)

Correcting an Abuse of the Lord’s Supper(Q)

17 In the following directives I have no praise for you,(R) for your meetings do more harm than good. 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions(S) among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.(T) 20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers.(U) As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God(V) by humiliating those who have nothing?(W) What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you?(X) Certainly not in this matter!

23 For I received from the Lord(Y) what I also passed on to you:(Z) The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body,(AA) which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(AB) in my blood;(AC) do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.(AD)

27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.(AE) 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves(AF) before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.(AG) 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.(AH) 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined(AI) so that we will not be finally condemned with the world.(AJ)

33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. 34 Anyone who is hungry(AK) should eat something at home,(AL) so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment.

(A)Ora vi lodo [, fratelli,] perché vi ricordate di me in ogni cosa e conservate le mie istruzioni[a] come ve le ho trasmesse.

Ma voglio che sappiate che il capo di ogni uomo è Cristo, che il capo della donna è l’uomo e che il capo di Cristo è Dio. Ogni uomo che prega o profetizza a capo coperto fa disonore al suo capo; ma ogni donna che prega o profetizza senza avere il capo coperto da un velo fa disonore al suo capo, perché è come se fosse rasa. Perché se la donna non ha il capo coperto, si faccia anche tagliare i capelli! Ma se per una donna è cosa vergognosa farsi tagliare i capelli o rasare, si copra il capo. Poiché, quanto all’uomo, egli non deve coprirsi il capo, essendo immagine e gloria di Dio; ma la donna è la gloria dell’uomo; perché l’uomo non viene dalla donna, ma la donna dall’uomo[b]; e l’uomo non fu creato per la donna, ma la donna per l’uomo. 10 Perciò la donna deve, a causa degli angeli, avere sul capo un segno di autorità. 11 D’altronde, nel Signore, né la donna è senza l’uomo, né l’uomo senza la donna. 12 Infatti, come la donna viene dall’uomo, così anche l’uomo esiste per mezzo della donna e ogni cosa è da Dio. 13 Giudicate voi stessi: è decoroso che una donna preghi Dio senza avere il capo coperto da un velo? 14 Non vi insegna la stessa natura che se l’uomo porta la chioma, ciò è per lui un disonore? 15 Mentre se una donna porta la chioma, per lei è un onore; perché la chioma le è data come ornamento[c]. 16 Se poi a qualcuno piace essere litigioso, noi non abbiamo tale abitudine; e neppure le chiese di Dio.

La cena del Signore

17 (B)Nel darvi queste istruzioni non vi lodo, perché vi radunate non per il meglio, ma per il peggio. 18 Poiché, prima di tutto, sento che quando vi riunite in assemblea ci sono divisioni tra voi, e in parte lo credo; 19 infatti è necessario che ci siano tra voi anche delle divisioni, perché quelli che sono approvati siano riconosciuti tali in mezzo a voi. 20 Quando poi vi riunite insieme, quello che fate non è mangiare la cena del Signore; 21 poiché, al pasto comune, ciascuno prende prima la propria cena; e mentre uno ha fame, l’altro è ubriaco. 22 Non avete forse delle case per mangiare e bere? O disprezzate voi la chiesa di Dio e fate vergognare quelli che non hanno nulla? Che vi dirò? Devo lodarvi? In questo non vi lodo.

23 Poiché ho ricevuto dal Signore quello che vi ho anche trasmesso; cioè, che il Signore Gesù, nella notte in cui fu tradito, prese del pane 24 e, dopo aver reso grazie, lo spezzò e disse: «[Prendete, mangiate;] questo è il mio corpo che è dato per voi[d]; fate questo in memoria di me». 25 Nello stesso modo, dopo aver cenato, prese anche il calice, dicendo: «Questo calice è il nuovo patto nel mio sangue; fate questo, ogni volta che ne berrete, in memoria di me. 26 Poiché ogni volta che mangiate questo pane e bevete da questo calice, voi annunciate la morte del Signore, finché egli venga».

27 Perciò, chiunque mangerà il pane[e] o berrà dal calice del Signore indegnamente sarà colpevole verso il corpo e il sangue del Signore. 28 Ora ciascuno esamini se stesso, e così mangi del pane e beva dal calice; 29 poiché chi mangia e beve [indegnamente], mangia e beve un giudizio contro se stesso, se non discerne il corpo [del Signore].

30 Per questo motivo molti fra voi sono infermi e malati, e parecchi muoiono[f]. 31 Ora, se esaminassimo noi stessi non saremmo giudicati; 32 ma quando siamo giudicati siamo corretti dal Signore, per non essere condannati con il mondo. 33 Dunque, fratelli miei, quando vi riunite per mangiare, aspettatevi gli uni gli altri. 34 Se qualcuno ha fame, mangi a casa, perché non vi riuniate per attirare su di voi un giudizio. Quanto alle altre cose, le regolerò quando verrò.
