先知首次疑問
1 哈巴谷先知所得的默示。
2 耶和華啊！
我懇求，你不垂聽，
要到幾時呢？
我向你呼叫“有狂暴的事”，你卻不拯救。
3 你為甚麼使我看見惡行？
有奸惡的事，你為甚麼見而不理？
毀滅和強暴在我面前，
紛爭和相鬥常常發生。
4 因此律法不能生效（“律法不能生效”原文作“律法鬆懈”），
公理無法彰顯。
因為惡人把義人包圍，所以公理顛倒。
耶和華的回答
5 你們當看列國，要定睛觀看，就會大大驚奇，
因為在你們的日子，我要作一件事，
即使有人說了出來，你們也不會相信。
6 就是要興起迦勒底人，那殘忍兇暴的民；
他們遍行全地，佔領別人的家園。
7 他們恐怖可怕，自以為義，趾高氣揚。
8 他們的馬比豹更快，比晚上的豺狼更猛。
他們的騎兵奔馳，自遠而來；
他們如鷹飛翔，迅速吞噬。
9 他們定著臉面向前，齊來行暴，
擄獲戰俘多如塵沙。
10 他們戲弄君王，以掌權的為笑柄；
他們嗤笑一切城堡，築壘攻取；
11 然後掃蕩如風吹過。
他們是有罪的，因他們以自己的勢力為神。

12 耶和華我的 神，我的聖者啊！
你不是自古就有的嗎？我們不會死的。
耶和華啊！你派他們行審判。
磐石啊！你立他們施懲罰。
13 你的眼目純潔，不看邪惡，
不能坐視奸惡；
為甚麼見行詭詐的人而不理？
惡人吞滅比自己公義的人，你為甚麼緘默呢？
14 你竟使人像海裡的魚，
像無人管轄的爬行的動物。
15 迦勒底人既用鈎把他們釣起來，用網拖走，
用魚網收聚在一處，就歡喜快樂，
16 向自己的網獻祭，對魚網燒香，
因他們藉此收穫豐富，飲食充裕。
17 這樣，他們倒空自己的網，
毫不留情地繼續殺戮列國。

Habakkuk has a problem
1 This is the message that God showed to his prophet Habakkuk.
2 Lord, how long must I call out to you for help?[a]
You do not listen to me!
I shout aloud to you, ‘Violence is everywhere!’
but you do nothing to make us safe.
3 You cause me to see many things that are not right.
You do not punish people who are doing wrong things.
Why do you let that happen?
People do cruel things and there is violence everywhere.
They argue and they fight and they quarrel.
4 The law has no power to make things right.
There is no justice in the courts.
Instead, wicked people win against good people.
The judges decide that bad people are good.
The Lord speaks
5 ‘All of you, look carefully at the other nations.
You will be very surprised at what is happening.
While you are still alive, I will do a very surprising thing.
You would not believe it even if someone told you.
6 I will give more power to the Babylonians.
They are a cruel nation with brave soldiers.
They march across the whole earth.
They take cities that do not belong to them.
7 They cause people to be very afraid.
They obey no laws except their own rules.
8 Their horses run faster than leopards.
They are more cruel than wolves
that attack in the evening.
Their riders come on fast horses
from places that are far away.
They quickly attack their enemies,
like hungry eagles that fly down to catch chickens.
9 Their whole army comes to do violent things.
They march forward like a wind from the desert.
They make people their prisoners,
as easily as if they are picking up sand.
10 They insult kings,
and they laugh at rulers.
They laugh at all the strong cities of their enemies.
They build heaps of earth against the walls,
and they take those cities for themselves.
11 Their army quickly moves on to another place,
like a wind that blows.
They think that their own god has made them strong,
and so they are guilty.’[b]
Habakkuk has another problem
12 Lord, you have always been God,
since the beginning.
You are the God that I worship as holy,
and you will never die.
Lord, you have chosen the Babylonians
as your weapon to punish your people.
You are a strong rock to protect us,
but you have decided to use them to punish us.
13 But you are too holy to accept anything that is evil.
You cannot agree with people who do wrong things.
So why do you let these wicked people live?
Why do you say nothing?
They are killing people who are more righteous than themselves.
14 It seems that you have made people like fish in the sea.
They are like animals that have no leader to rule them.
15 The Babylonians can easily catch them,
like people who catch fish with hooks.
They throw their nets into the water,
and they catch as many as they want.
When they store their fish in special nets,
they sing happy songs.
16 Their nets give them everything that they need,
so they offer sacrifices to their nets.
Their nets give them plenty of good food to eat,
so they burn incense to thank their nets.
17 Will you let them continue to do that?
Will they make their nets full of fish
as many times as they want to?
Will they continue to destroy other nations
and never stop?[c]

- 1:2 When we write Lord like this, it is a special name for God. Sometimes people write it as ‘Yahweh’, or as ‘Jehovah’. It is his own name that he told Moses. See Exodus 3:14. It means ‘I am who I am’. This shows that God has always been there and he always will be there.
- 1:11 God says that he will use a cruel, wicked nation to punish his own people.
- 1:17 Habakkuk cannot understand why God will use cruel people like the Babylonians as his weapon. The Babylonians catch prisoners, like men who catch fish with hooks and nets.

1 The prophecy(A) that Habakkuk the prophet received.
Habakkuk’s Complaint
2 How long,(B) Lord, must I call for help,
but you do not listen?(C)
Or cry out to you, “Violence!”
but you do not save?(D)
3 Why do you make me look at injustice?
Why do you tolerate(E) wrongdoing?(F)
Destruction and violence(G) are before me;
there is strife,(H) and conflict abounds.
4 Therefore the law(I) is paralyzed,
and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous,
so that justice(J) is perverted.(K)
The Lord’s Answer
5 “Look at the nations and watch—
and be utterly amazed.(L)
For I am going to do something in your days
that you would not believe,
even if you were told.(M)
6 I am raising up the Babylonians,[a](N)
that ruthless and impetuous people,
who sweep across the whole earth(O)
to seize dwellings not their own.(P)
7 They are a feared and dreaded people;(Q)
they are a law to themselves
and promote their own honor.
8 Their horses are swifter(R) than leopards,
fiercer than wolves(S) at dusk.
Their cavalry gallops headlong;
their horsemen come from afar.
They fly like an eagle swooping to devour;
9 they all come intent on violence.
Their hordes[b] advance like a desert wind
and gather prisoners(T) like sand.
10 They mock kings
and scoff at rulers.(U)
They laugh at all fortified cities;
by building earthen ramps(V) they capture them.
11 Then they sweep past like the wind(W) and go on—
guilty people, whose own strength is their god.”(X)
Habakkuk’s Second Complaint
12 Lord, are you not from everlasting?(Y)
My God, my Holy One,(Z) you[c] will never die.(AA)
You, Lord, have appointed(AB) them to execute judgment;
you, my Rock,(AC) have ordained them to punish.
13 Your eyes are too pure(AD) to look on evil;
you cannot tolerate wrongdoing.(AE)
Why then do you tolerate(AF) the treacherous?(AG)
Why are you silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?(AH)
14 You have made people like the fish in the sea,
like the sea creatures that have no ruler.
15 The wicked(AI) foe pulls all of them up with hooks,(AJ)
he catches them in his net,(AK)
he gathers them up in his dragnet;
and so he rejoices and is glad.
16 Therefore he sacrifices to his net
and burns incense(AL) to his dragnet,
for by his net he lives in luxury
and enjoys the choicest food.
17 Is he to keep on emptying his net,
destroying nations without mercy?(AM)

2 Fino a quando griderò, o Signore,
senza che tu mi dia ascolto?
Io grido a te: «Violenza!»
e tu non salvi.
3 Perché mi fai vedere l'*iniquità
e tolleri lo spettacolo della perversità?
Mi stanno davanti rapina e violenza;
ci sono liti, e nasce la discordia.
4 Perciò la legge è senza forza,
il diritto non si fa strada;
perché l'empio raggira il giusto
e il diritto ne esce pervertito.

5 (C)«Guardate fra le nazioni, guardate,
meravigliatevi e siate stupiti!
Poiché io sto per fare ai vostri giorni un'opera,
che voi non credereste, nemmeno se ve la raccontassero[a].
6 Perché, ecco, io sto per suscitare i *Caldei,
questa nazione crudele e impetuosa,
che percorre tutta la terra,
per impadronirsi di dimore che non sono sue.
7 È un popolo terribile e spaventoso;

8 I suoi cavalli sono piú veloci dei leopardi,
piú agili dei lupi di sera;

i suoi cavalieri vengono da lontano,

9 Tutta quella gente viene per darsi alla violenza,
le loro facce bramose sono tese in avanti,
e ammassano prigionieri come sabbia.
10 Si fanno beffe dei re,
i príncipi sono per loro oggetto di scherno;
ridono di tutte le loro fortezze;
fanno dei terrapieni e le prendono.
11 Poi passano come il vento;
passano oltre e si rendono colpevoli;
questa loro forza è il loro dio».
12 (D)Non sei tu dal principio,
o Signore, il mio Dio, il mio Santo?
Noi non moriremo!
O Signore, tu, questo popolo, lo hai posto per eseguire i tuoi giudizi;
tu, o Ròcca, lo hai stabilito per infliggere i tuoi castighi.
13 Tu, che hai gli occhi troppo puri per sopportare la vista del male,
e che non puoi tollerare lo spettacolo dell'iniquità,
perché guardi i perfidi e taci
quando il malvagio divora l'uomo che è piú giusto di lui?
14 Perché tratti gli uomini come i pesci del mare
e come i rettili, che non hanno padrone?
15 Il Caldeo li tira tutti su con l'amo,
li piglia nella sua rete,
li raccoglie nel suo giacchio;
perciò si rallegra ed esulta.
16 Per questo fa sacrifici alla sua rete
e offre profumi al suo giacchio;
perché gli provvedono una ricca porzione
e un cibo succulento.
17 Dovrà forse per questo continuare a vuotare la sua rete
e a massacrare le nazioni senza pietà?
