所羅門宣告建殿的理由(A)
6 那時所羅門說：
“耶和華曾說他要住在幽暗之中。
2 我已經為你建造了巍峨的殿宇，
作你永遠居住的地方。”
3 然後王轉過來，給以色列全體會眾祝福，以色列全體會眾都站著。
4 所羅門說：“耶和華以色列的 神是應當稱頌的！他親口對我的父親大衛應許的，已親手作成了，他說： 5 ‘自從我領我的子民從埃及地出來的那天，我沒有在以色列眾支派中，揀選一座城建造殿宇，使我的名留在那裡；我也沒有揀選一個人作領袖，統治我的子民以色列。 6 我卻揀選了耶路撒冷，使我的名留在那裡；也揀選了大衛，統治我的子民以色列。’ 7 我的父親大衛有心要為耶和華以色列的 神的名建造殿宇。 8 耶和華卻對我的父親大衛說：‘你心想要為我的名建造殿宇，你心意很好； 9 不過不是由你建造殿宇，而是你的兒子，你親生的兒子，他必為我的名建殿。’ 10 現在耶和華實現了他所說過的話，我已經起來接續我的父親大衛，坐上了以色列的王位，就像耶和華所說的；我為耶和華以色列的 神的名建造了這殿。 11 我也把約櫃安放在殿裡，約櫃中有耶和華和以色列人所立的約。”
所羅門獻殿的禱告(B)
12 所羅門在以色列全體會眾面前，站在耶和華的祭壇前，張開雙手； 13 原來所羅門做了一座銅臺，長兩公尺兩公寸，寬兩公尺兩公寸，高一公尺三公寸，安放在外院中。那時他站在銅臺上，在以色列全體會眾面前，屈膝下跪，向天張開雙手， 14 說：“耶和華以色列的 神啊，天上地下沒有神可以和你相比的，你向那些一心行在你面前的僕人，常是守約施慈愛的； 15 你對你的僕人我父親大衛所應許的，你都遵守了，你親口應許，也親手成全，就像今日一樣。 16 耶和華以色列的 神啊，你應許你的僕人我父親大衛說：‘只要你的子孫謹守他們的行為，遵守我的律法，像你在我面前所行的一樣，你就不會斷人在我面前坐上以色列的王位。’現在求你應驗這話吧。 17 耶和華以色列的 神啊，現在求你實現你向你的僕人大衛應許的話吧！
18 “ 神真的要和人住在地上嗎？看哪，天和天上的天也容不下你，何況我建造的這殿呢？ 19 耶和華我的 神啊，求你垂注你僕人的禱告和祈求，聆聽你僕人在你面前所發的呼喊和禱告。 20 求你張開眼睛，晝夜看顧這殿，就是看顧你所說要立你名的地方；求你垂聽你僕人向著這地方所發的禱告。 21 求你垂聽你的僕人和你的子民以色列的祈求，就是他們向著這地方所發的禱告；求你從天上，從你的居所垂聽，垂聽和赦免。
22 “人若是得罪了鄰舍，有人要他起誓，他就來到這殿，在你的祭壇前起誓； 23 求你從天上垂聽，施行你的作為，審判你的僕人，照著惡人所行的報應在他頭上；宣告義人無罪，照著他的義行賞賜他。
24 “如果你的子民以色列得罪了你，以致在仇敵面前被擊敗；後來回心轉意，承認你的名，在這殿裡向你禱告祈求， 25 求你從天上垂聽，赦免你子民以色列的罪，領他們歸回你賜給他們和他們列祖的土地。
26 “你的子民因得罪了你，你懲罰他們，使天閉塞不下雨；如果他們向著這地方禱告，承認你的名，離開他們的罪， 27 求你在天上垂聽，赦免你的僕人和你的子民以色列的罪，把他們當行的正道指教他們，降雨在你的地上，就是你賜給你的子民作產業的地上。
28 “國中若是有饑荒、瘟疫、旱風、霉爛、蝗蟲、螞蚱，或是有仇敵圍困城鎮，或是有甚麼災禍，甚麼疾病， 29 你的子民以色列，無論是個別或是全體，自知自己的災禍和痛苦，向著這殿張開雙手禱告或祈求， 30 求你從天上你的居所垂聽和赦免他們，你是知道人心的，你必照著各人所行的報應各人；因為只有你知道世人的心。 31 使他們在你賜給我們列祖的地上，一生一世敬畏你，遵行你的道路。
32 “至於在你的子民以色列以外的外族人，他們為了你的大名、你大能的手和伸出來的膀臂，從遠方而來；他們來向著這殿禱告的時候， 33 求你從天上，從你的居所垂聽他們，照著外族人向你呼求的一切而行，使地上萬民都認識你的名，敬畏你，像你的子民以色列一樣；又使他們知道我建造的這殿，是奉為你名的所在。
34 “如果你的子民在你派他們出去的路上，和仇敵作戰，他們向著你揀選的這城，和向著我為你的名建造的這殿向你禱告， 35 求你從天上垂聽他們的禱告祈求，使他們得勝。
36 “如果你的子民得罪了你（因為世上沒有不犯罪的人），你向他們發怒，把他們交在仇敵面前，以致仇敵把他們擄到外地或遠或近； 37 如果他們在被擄去的地方回心轉意，在被擄去的地方祈求你說：‘我們犯了罪了，我們作了孽了，我們行了惡了。’ 38 如果他們在被擄去的地方一心一意歸向你，又向著他們自己的地，就是你賜給他們列祖的地，和向著你揀選的這城，以及向著我為你的名建造的這殿禱告， 39 求你從天上，從你的居所垂聽他們的禱告祈求，為他們伸冤，赦免得罪了你的那些子民。
40 “我的 神啊，現在求你張開眼睛，求你的耳朵垂聽在這地方獻上的禱告。 41 現在，耶和華 神啊，求你起來，願你和你有大能的約櫃進入你安息的地方；耶和華 神啊，願你的祭司都披上救恩；願你的聖民在福樂中歡欣。 42 耶和華 神啊，求你不要轉臉不顧你所膏的人：願你記念你向你僕人大衛所施的慈愛。”

Solomon Speaks to the People
6 Then Solomon said, “The Lord said he would live in the ·dark cloud [thick cloud; thick cloud of darkness]. 2 Lord, I have built a ·wonderful [magnificent; glorious; lofty] ·Temple [L house] for you—a place for you to ·live [dwell] forever.”
3 While all the ·Israelites [L community of Israel] were standing there, King Solomon turned to them and blessed them. 4 Then he said, “·Praise [Bless] the Lord, the God of Israel. He has ·done [L fulfilled with his hand] what he ·promised [spoke] to my father David [2 Sam. 7:1–16]. The Lord said, 5 ‘Since the ·time [L day] I brought my people out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel where a ·Temple [L house] will be built for ·me [L my name to be there]. I did not choose a man to ·lead [rule] my people Israel. 6 But now I have chosen Jerusalem ·as the place I am to be worshiped [L for my name to be], and I have chosen David to ·lead [rule] my people Israel.’
7 “My father David wanted to build a ·Temple [L house] for ·the [L the name of the] Lord, the God of Israel. 8 But the Lord said to my father David, ‘·It was good that you [You did well to have] wanted to build a ·Temple [L house] for me. 9 But you are not the one to build it. Your son, who ·comes from your own body [will be born to you], is the one who will build ·my Temple [L the house for my name].’
10 “Now the Lord has ·kept his promise [L established the word he spoke]. I am the king now in place of David my father. Now I ·rule [L sit on the throne of] Israel as the Lord promised, and I have built the ·Temple [L house] for ·the [L the name of the] Lord, the God of Israel. 11 There I have put the Ark, in which is the ·Agreement [covenant; treaty] the Lord made with the ·Israelites [people of Israel].”
Solomon’s Prayer
12 Then Solomon stood ·facing [L before] the Lord’s altar, ·and all the Israelites were standing behind him [L in the presence of the assembly/community of Israel]. He ·spread out [lifted] his hands. 13 He had made a bronze platform ·seven and one-half feet [L five cubits] long, ·seven and one-half feet [L five cubits] wide, and ·seven and one-half feet [L five cubits] high, and he had placed it in the middle of the outer courtyard. Solomon stood on the platform. Then he kneeled in front of all the ·people [L assembly; community] of Israel gathered there, and he spread out his hands toward ·the sky [heaven]. 14 He said, “Lord, God of Israel, there is no god [C no true God] like you in heaven or on earth. You keep your ·agreement of love with [covenant/treaty and show unfailing love/loyalty to] your servants who ·truly follow [wholeheartedly/devotedly walk before] you. 15 You have kept the promise you made to your servant David, my father. You spoke it with your own mouth and finished it with your hands today.
16 “Now, Lord, God of Israel, keep the promise you made to your servant David, my father. You said, ‘If your sons ·are careful [guard their steps] ·to obey my teachings [L and walk in my laws] as you have ·obeyed [L walked], ·there will always be someone from your family [you will never fail to have someone] ·ruling [L sitting on the throne of] Israel.’ 17 Now, Lord, God of Israel, ·please continue to keep that promise you made [fulfill this word you have spoken] to your servant.
18 “But, ·God, can you [will God] really live here on the earth with ·people [mortals]? The ·sky and the highest place in heaven [heavens, even the highest heavens,] cannot contain you. ·Surely this house which I have built cannot contain you [How much less this temple/L house I have built]. 19 But ·please listen [listen favorably; attend] to my prayer and my request, because I am your servant. Lord my God, hear this ·prayer [cry] your servant prays to you. 20 Day and night please watch over this ·Temple [L house] where you have said you would ·be worshiped [L put your name]. Hear the prayer I pray facing this place. 21 Hear ·my prayers and the prayers of [L the pleas/entreaties/T supplications of your servant and] your people Israel when we pray facing this place. Hear from your home in heaven, and when you hear, forgive us.
22 “If someone ·wrongs another person [sins against his neighbor], he will be brought to the altar in this ·Temple [L house]. If he swears an oath [C that he is innocent], 23 then hear in heaven and act. Judge ·the case [L between your servants; C the accuser and the accused], ·punish [condemn; repay] the guilty, but ·declare that [justify; acquit] the ·innocent person is not guilty [righteous because of their innocence/righteousness].
24 “·When [If] your people, the Israelites, sin against you, their enemies will defeat them. But if they ·come back [return] to you and ·praise you [acknowledge/confess your name] and pray and ·appeal [T make supplication] to you in this ·Temple [L house], 25 then ·listen [hear] from heaven. Forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them back to the land you gave to them and their ·ancestors [fathers].
26 “When they sin against you, you will ·stop the rain from falling on their land [shut up the heavens/sky and stop the rain]. Then they will pray, facing this place and ·praising you [acknowledge/confess your name]; they will stop sinning ·when [because] you ·make them suffer [punish/afflict them]. 27 When this happens, hear their prayer in heaven, and forgive the sins of your servants, the Israelites. Teach them ·to do what is right [the right way to live; L the good way in which they should walk]. Then please send rain to ·this [L your] land you have given ·particularly to them [L to your people as an inheritance/special possession].
28 “·At times the land will get so dry that no food will grow [L If there is famine in the land…], or ·a great sickness will spread among the people [a plague; pestilence…]. ·Sometimes [L …or if…] the crops will be destroyed by blight, mildew, locusts, or grasshoppers. ·Your [L …or if…] people will be attacked in their cities by their enemies, or will become sick. 29 ·When any of these things [—whatever plague/disaster or disease] happens, ·the [L …and if the…] people will ·become truly sorry [pray about their troubles/affliction and pain/sorrows…]. ·If [L …and] your people spread their hands in prayer toward this ·Temple [L house], 30 then hear their prayers from your home in heaven. Forgive and ·treat [deal with] each person as he ·should be treated [deserves] because you know what is in a person’s heart. Only you know ·what is in people’s hearts [the human heart]. 31 Then the people will ·respect [fear; revere; honor] and ·obey you [L walk in your ways] as long as they live in this land you gave our ·ancestors [fathers].
32 “People who are not Israelites, foreigners from other lands, will hear about your ·greatness [L great name] and ·power [L mighty hand and outstretched arm]. They will come from far away to pray ·at this Temple [L toward this house]. 33 Then hear from your home in heaven, and ·do [grant; answer] whatever they ask you. Then ·people everywhere [L all the peoples of the earth] will know ·you [L your name] and ·respect [fear; revere; acknowledge] you, just as your people Israel do. Then everyone will know that I built this ·Temple [L house] as a place to ·worship you [L bear your name].
34 “When your people go out to fight their enemies ·along some road on which [by whichever way] you send them, your people will pray to you, ·facing [toward] this city which you have chosen and the ·Temple [L house] I have built for ·you [L your name]. 35 Then hear in heaven their prayers and their ·plea [T supplication], and ·do what is right [uphold their cause; vindicate them].
36 “·Everyone sins, so your people will also sin against you [When/If your people sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin—…]. You will become angry with them and will ·hand them over [deliver them] to their enemies. Their enemies will capture them and take them away to a country far or near. 37 ·Your people will be sorry for their sins [If they stop and think/come to their senses…] when they are held as ·prisoners [captives] in another country. ·They will be sorry […and they repent…] and ·pray [plead; make supplication] to you in the land ·where they are held as prisoners [of their captivity], saying, ‘We have sinned. We have done ·wrong [evil] and acted wickedly.’ 38 ·They will truly turn back to you […and they return to you with all their heart and soul/being] in the land where they are captives. ·They will […and they] pray, ·facing this [toward the] land you gave their ·ancestors [fathers], this city you have chosen, and the ·Temple [L house] I have built for ·you [L your name…]. 39 Then hear their prayers and their ·plea [T supplication] from your home in heaven, and ·do what is right [uphold their cause; vindicate them]. Forgive your people who have sinned against you.
40 “Now, my God, ·look at us. Listen [L …may your eyes be open and your ears attentive] to the prayers we pray in this place.
41 Now, ·rise [ascend], Lord God, and ·come to [enter] your resting place.
Come with the ·Ark of the Agreement that shows your strength [L ark of your might/power].
Let your priests ·receive [L be clothed with] your salvation, Lord God,
and may your ·holy people [godly/faithful ones] ·be happy because of your goodness [rejoice in what is good].

6 Then Solomon said, “The Lord has said that he would dwell in a dark cloud;(A) 2 I have built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.(B)”
3 While the whole assembly of Israel was standing there, the king turned around and blessed them. 4 Then he said:
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who with his hands has fulfilled what he promised with his mouth to my father David. For he said, 5 ‘Since the day I brought my people out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city in any tribe of Israel to have a temple built so that my Name might be there, nor have I chosen anyone to be ruler over my people Israel. 6 But now I have chosen Jerusalem(C) for my Name(D) to be there, and I have chosen David(E) to rule my people Israel.’
7 “My father David had it in his heart(F) to build a temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 8 But the Lord said to my father David, ‘You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name. 9 Nevertheless, you are not the one to build the temple, but your son, your own flesh and blood—he is the one who will build the temple for my Name.’
10 “The Lord has kept the promise he made. I have succeeded David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the Lord promised, and I have built the temple for the Name of the Lord, the God of Israel. 11 There I have placed the ark, in which is the covenant(G) of the Lord that he made with the people of Israel.”
Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication(H)(I)
12 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in front of the whole assembly of Israel and spread out his hands. 13 Now he had made a bronze platform,(J) five cubits long, five cubits wide and three cubits high,[a] and had placed it in the center of the outer court. He stood on the platform and then knelt down(K) before the whole assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven. 14 He said:
“Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like you(L) in heaven or on earth—you who keep your covenant of love(M) with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. 15 You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised(N) and with your hand you have fulfilled it—as it is today.
16 “Now, Lord, the God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises you made to him when you said, ‘You shall never fail(O) to have a successor to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants are careful in all they do to walk before me according to my law,(P) as you have done.’ 17 And now, Lord, the God of Israel, let your word that you promised your servant David come true.
18 “But will God really dwell(Q) on earth with humans? The heavens,(R) even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built! 19 Yet, Lord my God, give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence. 20 May your eyes(S) be open toward this temple day and night, this place of which you said you would put your Name(T) there. May you hear(U) the prayer your servant prays toward this place. 21 Hear the supplications of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven, your dwelling place; and when you hear, forgive.(V)
22 “When anyone wrongs their neighbor and is required to take an oath(W) and they come and swear the oath before your altar in this temple, 23 then hear from heaven and act. Judge between your servants, condemning(X) the guilty and bringing down on their heads what they have done, and vindicating the innocent by treating them in accordance with their innocence.
24 “When your people Israel have been defeated(Y) by an enemy because they have sinned against you and when they turn back and give praise to your name, praying and making supplication before you in this temple, 25 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land you gave to them and their ancestors.
26 “When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain(Z) because your people have sinned against you, and when they pray toward this place and give praise to your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them, 27 then hear from heaven and forgive(AA) the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach them the right way to live, and send rain on the land you gave your people for an inheritance.
28 “When famine(AB) or plague comes to the land, or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when enemies besiege them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come, 29 and when a prayer or plea is made by anyone among your people Israel—being aware of their afflictions and pains, and spreading out their hands toward this temple— 30 then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive,(AC) and deal with everyone according to all they do, since you know their hearts (for you alone know the human heart),(AD) 31 so that they will fear you(AE) and walk in obedience to you all the time they live in the land you gave our ancestors.
32 “As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come(AF) from a distant land because of your great name and your mighty hand(AG) and your outstretched arm—when they come and pray toward this temple, 33 then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigner(AH) asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.
34 “When your people go to war against their enemies,(AI) wherever you send them, and when they pray(AJ) to you toward this city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name, 35 then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.
36 “When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin(AK)—and you become angry with them and give them over to the enemy, who takes them captive(AL) to a land far away or near; 37 and if they have a change of heart(AM) in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead with you in the land of their captivity and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong and acted wickedly’; 38 and if they turn back to you with all their heart and soul in the land of their captivity where they were taken, and pray toward the land you gave their ancestors, toward the city you have chosen and toward the temple I have built for your Name; 39 then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their pleas, and uphold their cause. And forgive(AN) your people, who have sinned against you.
40 “Now, my God, may your eyes be open and your ears attentive(AO) to the prayers offered in this place.
41 “Now arise,(AP) Lord God, and come to your resting place,(AQ)
you and the ark of your might.
May your priests,(AR) Lord God, be clothed with salvation,
may your faithful people rejoice in your goodness.(AS)
42 Lord God, do not reject your anointed one.(AT)
Remember the great love(AU) promised to David your servant.”

3 Puis le roi se retourna et bénit toute l’assemblée d’Israël qui se tenait debout. 4 Il dit : Béni soit l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël, qui a, de sa propre bouche, parlé à mon père David, et qui a agi pour accomplir la promesse qu’il lui avait faite. Il lui avait dit[a] : 5 « Depuis le jour où j’ai fait sortir mon peuple d’Egypte, je n’ai jamais choisi une ville particulière parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël pour qu’on y bâtisse un temple où je sois présent, et je n’ai pas choisi un homme pour qu’il soit le chef de mon peuple Israël[b]. 6 Mais voici que j’ai élu Jérusalem pour y établir ma présence, et j’ai choisi David pour gouverner mon peuple Israël ! » 7 Mon père David avait à cœur de bâtir un temple en l’honneur de l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël. 8 Mais l’Eternel lui a déclaré : « Ton projet de bâtir un temple en mon honneur est une excellente chose : tu as bien fait de prendre cela à cœur. 9 Toutefois, ce n’est pas toi qui bâtiras ce temple, c’est ton propre fils qui le bâtira pour moi. » 10 L’Eternel a tenu sa promesse : j’ai succédé à mon père David et j’occupe le trône d’Israël, comme l’Eternel l’avait annoncé, et j’ai construit ce temple en l’honneur de l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël. 11 J’y ai déposé le coffre qui contient le code de l’alliance de l’Eternel, cette alliance qu’il a conclue avec les Israélites.
La prière d’intercession de Salomon(A)
12 Puis Salomon se plaça devant l’autel de l’Eternel, en faisant face à toute l’assemblée d’Israël. Il leva les mains pour prier. 13 En effet, Salomon avait fait construire une estrade de bronze, ayant une forme carrée, de deux mètres cinquante de côté et d’un mètre cinquante de haut. Il l’avait fait installer au milieu du parvis et il se tenait dessus. Là, il se mit à genoux devant toute l’assemblée d’Israël. Il leva les mains vers le ciel 14 et pria : Eternel, Dieu d’Israël ! Il n’y a pas de Dieu semblable à toi, ni dans le ciel ni sur la terre ! Tu es fidèle à ton alliance et tu conserves ta bonté à tes serviteurs qui se conduisent selon ta volonté de tout leur cœur. 15 Ainsi tu as tenu la promesse que tu avais faite à ton serviteur David, mon père, oui, tu as agi pour que soit accompli ce que tu lui avais déclaré de ta propre bouche. 16 A présent, Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, veuille aussi tenir l’autre promesse que tu lui as faite lorsque tu lui as dit : « Il y aura toujours l’un de tes descendants qui siégera sous mon regard sur le trône d’Israël, à condition qu’ils veillent sur leur conduite pour vivre selon ma Loi, comme tu as toi-même vécu selon ma volonté[c]. » 17 Oui, maintenant, Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, daigne réaliser cette promesse que tu as faite à ton serviteur David !
18 Mais est-ce qu’en vérité Dieu habiterait avec les hommes sur la terre, alors que le ciel dans toute son immensité ne saurait le contenir ? Combien moins ce temple que je viens de construire ! 19 Toutefois, Eternel, mon Dieu, veuille être attentif à la prière et à la supplication de ton serviteur et écouter l’appel que je t’adresse ! 20 Que tes yeux veillent jour et nuit sur ce temple, ce lieu où tu as toi-même promis d’établir ta présence ! Et exauce la prière que ton serviteur t’adresse en ce lieu[d] ! 21 Daigne écouter ses supplications et celles de ton peuple Israël lorsqu’il viendra prier ici ! Depuis le lieu où tu demeures, depuis le ciel, entends notre prière et veuille pardonner !
22 Si quelqu’un est accusé d’avoir commis une faute envers son prochain et si l’on exige de lui qu’il prête serment avec des imprécations ici devant ton autel, dans ce temple, 23 sois attentif depuis le ciel, interviens et juge tes serviteurs pour faire venir sur le coupable le châtiment que mérite sa conduite, et pour faire reconnaître l’innocence du juste afin qu’il soit traité selon son innocence.
24 Si ton peuple Israël est battu par un ennemi, parce que ses membres auront péché contre toi, si ensuite ils reviennent en arrière, s’ils t’adressent leurs louanges, te prient et expriment leurs supplications devant toi, dans ce temple, 25 écoute-les depuis le ciel, pardonne le péché de ton peuple Israël et ramène-les dans le pays que tu leur as donné, à eux et à leurs ancêtres !
26 Quand le ciel sera fermé et refusera de donner la pluie parce que ton peuple aura péché contre toi, si ce peuple prie en ce lieu, s’il te loue et se détourne de ses fautes, après que tu l’as affligé, 27 écoute-le depuis le ciel, pardonne le péché de tes serviteurs et de ton peuple Israël, indique-leur la bonne ligne de conduite à suivre, et fais tomber la pluie sur ton pays que tu as donné en possession à ton peuple !
28 Quand la famine ou la peste sévira dans le pays, quand les céréales seront atteintes de maladie, quand surviendra une invasion de sauterelles ou de criquets, ou quand ses ennemis assiégeront ton peuple dans son pays, dans les villes fortifiées du pays, quand quelque maladie ou quelque malheur s’abattra sur lui, 29-30 si, considérant sa peine et sa souffrance, chacun tend les mains vers ce temple, veuille exaucer du ciel, le lieu où tu demeures, les prières et les supplications que t’adressera tout homme ou tout ton peuple Israël. Pardonne-leur et traite chacun selon sa conduite, puisque tu connais le cœur de chacun. En effet, toi seul tu connais le cœur des humains. 31 De cette manière, ils te craindront et se conduiront comme tu le leur as prescrit tout le temps qu’ils vivront sur l’étendue du territoire que tu as donné à nos ancêtres.
32 Et même si un étranger qui ne fait pas partie de ton peuple Israël vient d’un pays lointain pour prier dans ce temple parce qu’il aura entendu parler de ta grandeur et de la puissance que tu déploies pour agir, 33 veuille l’écouter depuis le ciel, depuis la demeure où tu habites, et lui accorder tout ce qu’il t’aura demandé. De cette manière, tous les peuples du monde te connaîtront, ils te craindront comme le fait ton peuple Israël, et ils reconnaîtront que le temple que j’ai construit t’appartient.
34 Lorsque ton peuple partira pour combattre ses ennemis, sur le chemin où tu l’enverras, s’il te prie en se tournant vers cette ville que tu as choisie et vers ce temple que j’ai construit en ton honneur, 35 daigne écouter depuis le ciel leurs prières et leurs supplications et défendre leur cause !
36 Il se peut qu’ils commettent un péché contre toi – car quel est l’homme qui ne commet jamais de péché ? – Alors tu seras irrité contre eux, tu les livreras au pouvoir de leurs ennemis qui les emmèneront en captivité dans un pays étranger, proche ou lointain. 37 S’ils se mettent à réfléchir dans le pays où ils auront été déportés, s’ils reviennent en arrière et t’adressent leurs supplications dans le pays de leur captivité et qu’ils disent : « Nous avons péché, nous avons mal agi, nous sommes coupables », 38 s’ils reviennent à toi de tout leur cœur et de tout leur être, dans le pays de leur captivité où ils auront été déportés, et s’ils prient en se tournant vers le pays que tu as donné à leurs ancêtres, vers la ville que tu as choisie et vers le temple que j’ai construit en ton honneur, 39 alors depuis le ciel, la demeure où tu habites, veuille écouter leur prière et leurs supplications, et défendre leur cause ! Pardonne à ton peuple les péchés qu’il aura commis contre toi ! 40 Désormais donc, mon Dieu, veuille écouter attentivement et considérer favorablement toute prière faite en ce lieu.
41 Et maintenant, ô Dieu, ╵Eternel, lève-toi ╵et viens dans le lieu de ta paix,
ô viens avec ton coffre ╵d’où rayonne ta force
et que tes prêtres, ╵Eternel Dieu, ╵se parent du salut.
Que ceux qui te sont attachés ╵poussent des cris de joie, ╵et qu’ils jouissent du bonheur[e] !
42 Eternel Dieu, ╵n’écarte pas le roi ╵qui a reçu l’onction.
Veuille te souvenir ╵de ce que, dans ta bienveillance, ╵tu avais promis à David, ╵ton serviteur[f].
