犹大王亚玛谢
25 亚玛谢二十五岁登基，在耶路撒冷执政二十九年。他母亲叫约耶但，是耶路撒冷人。 2 他做耶和华视为正的事，只是没有全心去做。 3 他巩固了王位后，立即处死了杀他父王的臣仆， 4 但没有处死他们的孩子，遵行了耶和华在摩西律法书中的吩咐：“不可因孩子犯罪而处死父亲，也不可因父亲犯罪而处死孩子。各人要自负罪责。”
与西珥人交战

Ang Paghahari ni Amazia sa Juda(A)
25 Si Amazia ay 25 taong gulang nang siya ay naging hari. Sa Jerusalem siya tumira, at naghari siya roon sa loob ng 29 na taon. Ang ina niya ay si Jehoadin na taga-Jerusalem. 2 Matuwid ang ginawa ni Amazia sa paningin ng Panginoon, pero hindi lubos ang pagsunod niya sa Panginoon. 3 Nang matatag na ang paghahari ni Amazia, ipinapatay niya ang mga opisyal na pumatay sa kanyang amang hari. 4 Pero hindi niya ipinapatay ang kanilang mga anak, dahil ayon sa nasusulat sa Aklat ng Kautusan ni Moises, sinabi ng Panginoon, “Huwag papatayin ang mga magulang dahil sa kasalanan ng kanilang mga anak, at ang mga anak ay hindi rin dapat patayin dahil sa kasalanan ng kanilang mga magulang. 17 Matapos makipag-usap ni Haring Amazia sa kanyang mga tagapayo, nagpadala siya ng mensahe sa hari ng Israel na si Jehoash na anak ni Jehoahaz at apo ni Jehu. Hinamon niya si Jehoash na maglaban sila. 18 Pero sinagot siya ni Haring Jehoash sa pamamagitan ng kwentong ito: “Doon sa Lebanon ay may halamang may tinik na nagpadala ng mensahe sa puno ng sedro: ‘Ipakasal mo ang iyong anak na babae sa aking anak na lalaki.’ Pero may dumaang hayop mula sa gubat at tinapak-tapakan ang halamang may tinik. 19 Amazia, totoong natalo mo ang Edom, at ipinagyabang mo ito. Pero mabuti pang huwag ka na lang makipaglaban sa amin, manatili ka na lang sa iyong lugar. Bakit gustong-gusto mo ng gulo na magdadala lang ng kapahamakan sa iyo at sa Juda?”
20 Pero hindi nakinig si Amazia, dahil kumikilos ang Dios para wasakin siya ni Jehoash dahil sa kanyang pagsamba sa mga dios ng Edom. 21 Kaya nilusob siya ni Haring Jehoash at ng mga sundalo nito. Naglaban sila sa Bet Shemesh na sakop ng Juda. 22 Natalo ng Israel ang Juda, at ang bawat sundalo ng Juda ay tumakas pauwi sa kanilang bahay. 23 Nadakip ni Haring Jehoash si Haring Amazia roon sa Bet Shemesh, at dinala niya siya sa Jerusalem. 25 Amatsia avait vingt-cinq ans lorsqu’il devint roi et il régna vingt-neuf ans à Jérusalem[a]. Sa mère s’appelait Yehoaddân, elle était de Jérusalem. 2 Il fit ce que l’Eternel considère comme juste, mais non pas d’un cœur sans partage[b]. 3 Dès qu’Amatsia eut affermi son autorité royale, il fit exécuter les ministres qui avaient assassiné son père. 4 Mais il ne fit pas mourir leurs fils, conformément aux ordres donnés par l’Eternel dans la Loi, dans le livre de Moïse, lorsqu’il dit : « Les pères ne seront pas mis à mort pour les fils et les fils ne seront pas mis à mort pour les pères ; mais chacun sera mis à mort pour son propre péché[c]. »
La guerre contre les Edomites
5 Amatsia rassembla Juda et établit, pour chaque groupe familial, des chefs de « milliers » et de « centaines » pour tout Juda et Benjamin. Il recensa ceux qui avaient au moins vingt ans ; il trouva trois cent mille hommes aptes à la guerre, et sachant manier la lance et le grand bouclier. 6 Il enrôla encore pour trois tonnes et demie d’argent, cent mille mercenaires dans le royaume d’Israël du Nord. 7 Un homme de Dieu vint lui dire : O roi, qu’une armée d’Israël n’aille pas combattre avec toi, car l’Eternel n’est pas avec le royaume du Nord, avec tous ces Ephraïmites. 8 Si tu vas au combat avec eux, tu auras beau te battre vaillamment, Dieu te fera succomber devant l’ennemi, car Dieu a le pouvoir de secourir ou de faire succomber.
9 Amatsia demanda à l’homme de Dieu : Mais qu’adviendra-t-il de ces trois tonnes et demie d’argent que j’ai donné aux troupes d’Israël ?
L’homme de Dieu répondit : L’Eternel peut te donner bien plus que cela.
10 Alors Amatsia renvoya chez eux les soldats qui étaient venus d’Ephraïm. Mais ceux-ci furent très en colère contre Juda et ils rentrèrent chez eux furieux.

11 Amatsia rassembla son courage, prit la tête de son armée et se dirigea vers la vallée du Sel où il battit dix mille habitants de Séir[d]. 12 Les Judéens capturèrent vivants dix mille hommes qu’ils emmenèrent au sommet d’une falaise[e] d’où ils les précipitèrent tous dans le vide, de sorte qu’ils se rompirent les os.
L’idolâtrie et le refus d’écouter un prophète
13 Mais, pendant ce temps, les soldats de la troupe qu’Amatsia avait renvoyés, pour qu’ils ne participent pas à son expédition, envahirent les villes de Juda depuis Samarie jusqu’à Beth-Horôn. Ils massacrèrent trois mille habitants et emportèrent un butin considérable.
14 Lorsque Amatsia fut de retour après sa victoire sur les Edomites, il rapporta les statues de leurs dieux et en fit ses propres dieux ; il se prosterna devant elles et leur offrit des parfums. 15 Alors l’Eternel se mit en colère contre lui et il lui envoya un prophète qui lui demanda : Pourquoi t’es-tu tourné vers les dieux de ce peuple qui n’ont même pas été capables de délivrer leur propre peuple de ton pouvoir ?
16 Mais le roi l’interrompit en lui répliquant : Est-ce qu’on t’a nommé conseiller du roi ? Tais-toi ! Inutile de te faire tuer !
Le prophète n’insista pas, mais avant de se retirer, il dit cependant : Parce que tu as agi comme tu l’as fait et que tu as refusé d’écouter mes conseils, je reconnais que Dieu a décidé dans son conseil de te détruire.
La défaite devant Israël(B)
17 Amatsia, roi de Juda, prit l’avis de ses conseillers, puis il envoya des messagers à Joas, fils de Yoahaz et petit-fils de Jéhu, roi d’Israël, pour lui faire dire : Allons nous affronter !
18 Joas lui fit répondre : Un jour, le chardon du Liban envoya dire au cèdre du Liban : « Donne ta fille en mariage à mon fils ! » Mais les bêtes sauvages du Liban passèrent par là et piétinèrent le chardon. 19 Tu te dis que tu as vaincu les Edomites, alors l’orgueil t’est monté à la tête et tu te glorifies ! Maintenant, tu ferais mieux de rester chez toi : pourquoi veux-tu t’engager dans une entreprise malheureuse et courir au-devant d’un désastre pour toi et pour le royaume de Juda ?
20 Mais Amatsia n’écouta pas son avertissement, car Dieu faisait en sorte que lui et son peuple subissent la défaite parce qu’ils s’étaient tournés vers les dieux d’Edom. 21 Alors Joas, roi d’Israël, se mit en campagne. Les deux rois s’affrontèrent à Beth-Shémesh au pays de Juda. 22 L’armée de Juda fut battue par celle d’Israël, et les soldats de Juda s’enfuirent chacun chez soi. 23 A Beth-Shémesh, Joas, roi d’Israël, fit prisonnier Amatsia, roi de Juda, fils de Joas et petit-fils de Yoahaz. Il l’emmena à Jérusalem et démolit le rempart de la ville sur une longueur de cent quatre-vingts mètres, depuis la porte d’Ephraïm jusqu’à la porte de l’Angle. 24 Il prit tout l’or et l’argent et tous les objets précieux qui se trouvaient dans le temple de Dieu, sous la garde d’Obed-Edom[f], ainsi que les trésors du palais royal. Il prit en plus des otages, puis retourna à Samarie.
L’assassinat d’Amatsia
25 Amatsia, fils de Joas, roi de Juda, vécut encore quinze années après la mort de Joas, fils de Yoahaz, roi d’Israël. 26 Les autres faits et gestes d’Amatsia, des premiers aux derniers, sont cités dans le livre des rois de Juda et d’Israël. 27 A partir du moment où Amatsia se détourna de l’Eternel, on trama contre lui un complot à Jérusalem. Il s’enfuit à Lakish. Mais ses ennemis envoyèrent des gens jusque-là pour le faire assassiner. 28 On ramena son corps à dos de cheval à Jérusalem et on l’enterra aux côtés de ses ancêtres dans la cité de Juda.

King James Version
25 Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart.
3 Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.
4 But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
5 Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.
6 He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.
7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
8 But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The Lord is able to give thee much more than this.
10 Then Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
11 And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand.
12 And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
13 But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Bethhoron, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.
14 Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
15 Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?
16 And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.
17 Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face.
18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.
19 Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?
20 But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.
21 So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
22 And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.
23 And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
24 And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obededom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.
25 And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.
26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?
27 Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the Lord they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.
28 And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
