Reinado de Amasías
25 (A)Amasías tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó veintinueve años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Joadán, de Jerusalén. 2 Amasías hizo lo recto ante los ojos del Señor, aunque no de todo corazón(B). 3 Y una vez afianzado el reino en su mano[a], mató a los siervos suyos que habían asesinado[b] al rey su padre(C). 4 Pero a sus hijos no les dio muerte, sino que hizo conforme a lo que está escrito en la ley en el libro de Moisés, tal como el Señor ordenó: «No se dará muerte a los padres por culpa de los hijos, ni se dará muerte a los hijos por culpa de los padres, sino que a cada uno se le dará muerte por su propio pecado(D)».
5 Además, Amasías reunió a Judá, y conforme a sus casas paternas los puso bajo capitanes de miles y capitanes de cientos por todo Judá y Benjamín. Hizo un censo de[c] los de veinte años arriba(E), y halló 300,000 hombres escogidos(F), hábiles para ir a la guerra y para manejar lanza y escudo. 6 También tomó a sueldo a 100,000 guerreros valientes de Israel por 3.4 toneladas de plata. 7 Pero un hombre de Dios vino a Amasías(G) y le dijo: «Oh rey, no permita que el ejército de Israel vaya con usted, porque el Señor no está con Israel ni con ninguno de los hijos de Efraín. 8 Pero si usted va, hágalo, esfuércese para la batalla; sin embargo, Dios lo derribará[d] delante del enemigo, porque Dios tiene poder para ayudar y para derribar(H)». 9 Amasías dijo al hombre de Dios: «¿Y qué debo hacer con las 3.4 toneladas que he dado a las tropas de Israel?». «El Señor tiene mucho más que darle que esto(I)», respondió el hombre de Dios. 10 Entonces Amasías despidió[e] las tropas que vinieron a él de Efraín, para que se fueran a sus casas[f]. Porque se encendió en gran manera la ira de ellos contra Judá, así que regresaron a sus casas[g] ardiendo en ira.
11 Amasías se fortaleció, y al frente de su pueblo fue al valle de la Sal y mató a 10,000 de los hijos de Seir(J). 12 También los hijos de Judá capturaron vivos a 10,000 y los llevaron a la cumbre de la peña, los echaron abajo desde la cumbre de la peña y todos fueron despedazados. 13 Pero las tropas[h] que Amasías había hecho volver para que no fueran con él a la batalla, saquearon las ciudades de Judá desde Samaria hasta Bet Horón, mataron a 3,000 de ellos y tomaron mucho botín.
14 Después que Amasías regresó de la matanza de los edomitas, trajo los dioses de los hijos de Seir y los puso como sus dioses(K), se postró delante de ellos y les quemó incienso. 15 Entonces se encendió la ira del Señor contra Amasías, y le envió un profeta que le dijo: «¿Por qué has buscado a los dioses de otro pueblo que no pudieron librar a su propio pueblo de tu mano(L)?». 16 Y mientras el profeta hablaba con él, el rey le dijo: «¿Acaso te hemos constituido consejero real? Detente. ¿Por qué buscas que te maten[i]?». Entonces el profeta se detuvo, y dijo: «Yo sé que Dios ha determinado destruirte, porque has hecho esto y no has escuchado mi consejo».
17 (M)Entonces Amasías, rey de Judá, tomó consejo y envió mensajeros a Joás, hijo de Joacaz, hijo de Jehú, rey de Israel, y le dijeron: «Ven, veámonos cara a cara[j]». 18 Joás, rey de Israel, envió este mensaje a Amasías, rey de Judá: «El cardo que estaba en el Líbano, envió a decir al cedro que estaba en el Líbano: “Da a tu hija por mujer a mi hijo”. Pero pasó una fiera que estaba en el Líbano, y pisoteó el cardo(N). 19 Tú dijiste: “He[k] derrotado[l] a Edom”; y tu corazón se ha envanecido[m] para gloriarte. Quédate ahora en tu casa; ¿por qué quieres provocar el mal, de modo que caigas tú y Judá contigo(O)?».
20 Pero Amasías no quiso escuchar, porque esto venía de Dios, para entregarlo en mano de Joás, porque había buscado los dioses de Edom. 21 Subió Joás, rey de Israel, y él y Amasías, rey de Judá, se enfrentaron en Bet Semes, que pertenece a Judá. 22 Y Judá fue derrotado por[n] Israel, y huyeron, cada uno a su tienda. 23 Entonces Joás, rey de Israel, capturó en Bet Semes a Amasías, rey de Judá, hijo de Joás, hijo de Joacaz(P), y lo llevó a Jerusalén; y derribó la muralla de Jerusalén desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la puerta del Ángulo, 400 codos (180 metros). 24 Joás tomó todo el oro y la plata, todos los utensilios que se encontraban con Obed Edom(Q) en la casa de Dios, los tesoros de la casa del rey y también los rehenes, y se volvió a Samaria.
25 (R)Y Amasías, hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, vivió quince años después de la muerte de Joás, hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel. 26 Los demás hechos de Amasías, desde el primero hasta el postrero, ¿no están escritos en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel? 27 Desde el día en que Amasías se apartó de seguir al Señor, conspiraron contra él en Jerusalén, y él huyó a Laquis; pero lo persiguieron hasta Laquis y allí lo mataron. 28 Lo trajeron en caballos y lo sepultaron con sus padres en la ciudad de David[o].

25 De veinticinco años era Amasías cuando comenzó a reinar, y veintinueve años reinó en Jerusalén; el nombre de su madre fue Joadán, de Jerusalén. 2 Hizo él lo recto ante los ojos de Jehová, aunque no de perfecto corazón. 3 Y luego que fue confirmado en el reino, mató a los siervos que habían matado al rey su padre. 4 Pero no mató a los hijos de ellos, según lo que está escrito en la ley, en el libro de Moisés, donde Jehová mandó diciendo: No morirán los padres por los hijos, ni los hijos por los padres; mas cada uno morirá por su pecado.(A)
5 Reunió luego Amasías a Judá, y con arreglo a las familias les puso jefes de millares y de centenas sobre todo Judá y Benjamín. Después puso en lista a todos los de veinte años arriba, y fueron hallados trescientos mil escogidos para salir a la guerra, que tenían lanza y escudo. 6 Y de Israel tomó a sueldo por cien talentos de plata, a cien mil hombres valientes. 7 Mas un varón de Dios vino a él y le dijo: Rey, no vaya contigo el ejército de Israel; porque Jehová no está con Israel, ni con todos los hijos de Efraín. 8 Pero si vas así, si lo haces, y te esfuerzas para pelear, Dios te hará caer delante de los enemigos; porque en Dios está el poder, o para ayudar, o para derribar. 9 Y Amasías dijo al varón de Dios: ¿Qué, pues, se hará de los cien talentos que he dado al ejército de Israel? Y el varón de Dios respondió: Jehová puede darte mucho más que esto. 10 Entonces Amasías apartó el ejército de la gente que había venido a él de Efraín, para que se fuesen a sus casas; y ellos se enojaron grandemente contra Judá, y volvieron a sus casas encolerizados. 11 Esforzándose entonces Amasías, sacó a su pueblo, y vino al Valle de la Sal, y mató de los hijos de Seir diez mil.(B) 12 Y los hijos de Judá tomaron vivos a otros diez mil, los cuales llevaron a la cumbre de un peñasco, y de allí los despeñaron, y todos se hicieron pedazos. 13 Mas los del ejército que Amasías había despedido, para que no fuesen con él a la guerra, invadieron las ciudades de Judá, desde Samaria hasta Bet-horón, y mataron a tres mil de ellos, y tomaron gran despojo.
14 Volviendo luego Amasías de la matanza de los edomitas, trajo también consigo los dioses de los hijos de Seir, y los puso ante sí por dioses, y los adoró, y les quemó incienso. 15 Por esto se encendió la ira de Jehová contra Amasías, y envió a él un profeta, que le dijo: ¿Por qué has buscado los dioses de otra nación, que no libraron a su pueblo de tus manos? 16 Y hablándole el profeta estas cosas, él le respondió: ¿Te han puesto a ti por consejero del rey? Déjate de eso. ¿Por qué quieres que te maten? Y cuando terminó de hablar, el profeta dijo luego: Yo sé que Dios ha decretado destruirte, porque has hecho esto, y no obedeciste mi consejo.
17 Y Amasías rey de Judá, después de tomar consejo, envió a decir a Joás hijo de Joacaz, hijo de Jehú, rey de Israel: Ven, y veámonos cara a cara. 18 Entonces Joás rey de Israel envió a decir a Amasías rey de Judá: El cardo que estaba en el Líbano envió al cedro que estaba en el Líbano, diciendo: Da tu hija a mi hijo por mujer. Y he aquí que las fieras que estaban en el Líbano pasaron, y hollaron el cardo. 19 Tú dices: He aquí he derrotado a Edom; y tu corazón se enaltece para gloriarte. Quédate ahora en tu casa. ¿Para qué provocas un mal en que puedas caer tú y Judá contigo?
20 Mas Amasías no quiso oír; porque era la voluntad de Dios, que los quería entregar en manos de sus enemigos, por cuanto habían buscado los dioses de Edom. 21 Subió, pues, Joás rey de Israel, y se vieron cara a cara él y Amasías rey de Judá en la batalla de Bet-semes, la cual es de Judá. 22 Pero cayó Judá delante de Israel, y huyó cada uno a su casa. 23 Y Joás rey de Israel apresó en Bet-semes a Amasías rey de Judá, hijo de Joás, hijo de Joacaz, y lo llevó a Jerusalén; y derribó el muro de Jerusalén desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la puerta del ángulo, un tramo de cuatrocientos codos. 24 Asimismo tomó todo el oro y la plata, y todos los utensilios que se hallaron en la casa de Dios en casa de Obed-edom, y los tesoros de la casa del rey, y los hijos de los nobles; después volvió a Samaria.
25 Y vivió Amasías hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, quince años después de la muerte de Joás hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel. 26 Los demás hechos de Amasías, primeros y postreros, ¿no están escritos en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel? 27 Desde el tiempo en que Amasías se apartó de Jehová, empezaron a conspirar contra él en Jerusalén; y habiendo él huido a Laquis, enviaron tras él a Laquis, y allá lo mataron; 28 y lo trajeron en caballos, y lo sepultaron con sus padres en la ciudad de Judá.

King Amaziah
25 1-4 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king and reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother was Jehoaddin from Jerusalem. He lived well before God, doing the right thing for the most part. But he wasn’t wholeheartedly devoted to God. When he had the affairs of the kingdom well in hand, he executed the palace guard who had assassinated his father the king. But he didn’t kill the sons of the assassins—he was mindful of what God commanded in The Revelation of Moses, that parents shouldn’t be executed for their children’s sins, nor children for their parents’. We each pay personally for our sins.
5-6 Amaziah organized Judah and sorted out Judah and Benjamin by families and by military units. Men twenty years and older had to register—they ended up with 300,000 judged capable of military service. In addition he hired 100,000 soldiers from Israel in the north at a cost of about four and a half tons of silver.
7-8 A holy man showed up and said, “No, O King—don’t let those northern Israelite soldiers into your army; God is not on their side, nor with any of the Ephraimites. Instead, you go by yourself and be strong. God and God only has the power to help or hurt your cause.”
9 But Amaziah said to the holy man, “But what about all this money—these tons of silver I have already paid out to hire these men?”
“God’s help is worth far more to you than that,” said the holy man.
10 So Amaziah fired the soldiers he had hired from the north and sent them home. They were very angry at losing their jobs and went home seething.
11-12 But Amaziah was optimistic. He led his troops into the Valley of Salt and killed ten thousand men of Seir. They took another ten thousand as prisoners, led them to the top of the Rock, and pushed them off a cliff. They all died in the fall, smashed on the rocks.
13 But the troops Amaziah had dismissed from his army, angry over their lost opportunity for plunder, rampaged through the towns of Judah all the way from Samaria to Beth Horon, killing three thousand people and taking much plunder.
14-15 On his return from the destruction of the Edomites, Amaziah brought back the gods of the men of Seir and installed them as his own gods, worshiping them and burning incense to them. That ignited God’s anger; a fiery blast of God’s wrath put into words by a God-sent prophet: “What is this? Why on earth would you pray to inferior gods who couldn’t so much as help their own people from you—gods weaker than Amaziah?”
16 Amaziah interrupted him, “Did I ask for your opinion? Shut up or get thrown out!”
The prophet quit speaking, but not before he got in one last word: “I have it on good authority: God has made up his mind to throw you out because of what you’ve done, and because you wouldn’t listen to me.”

17 One day Amaziah sent envoys to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, challenging him to a fight: “Come and meet with me, I dare you. Let’s have it out face-to-face!”
18-19 Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah, “One day a thistle in Lebanon sent word to a cedar in Lebanon, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ But then a wild animal of Lebanon passed by and stepped on the thistle, crushing it. Just because you’ve defeated Edom in battle, you now think you’re a big shot. Go ahead and be proud, but stay home. Why press your luck? Why bring defeat on yourself and Judah?”
20-22 Amaziah wouldn’t take no for an answer—God had already decided to let Jehoash defeat him because he had defected to the gods of Edom. So Jehoash king of Israel came on ahead and confronted Amaziah king of Judah. They met at Beth Shemesh, a town of Judah. Judah was thoroughly beaten by Israel—all the soldiers straggled home in defeat.
23-24 Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth Shemesh. But Jehoash didn’t stop at that; he went on to attack Jerusalem. He demolished the Wall of Jerusalem all the way from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a stretch of about six hundred feet. He looted the gold, silver, and furnishings—anything he found that was worth taking—from both the palace and The Temple of God—and, for good measure, he took hostages. Then he returned to Samaria.
25-26 Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah continued as king fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. The rest of the life and times of Amaziah from start to finish is written in the Royal Annals of the Kings of Judah and Israel.
27-28 During those last days, after Amaziah had defected from God, they cooked up a plot against Amaziah in Jerusalem, and he had to flee to Lachish. But they tracked him down in Lachish and killed him there. They brought him back on horseback and buried him in Jerusalem with his ancestors in the City of David.

2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart.
3 Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.
4 But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
5 Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.
6 He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.
7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
8 But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The Lord is able to give thee much more than this.
10 Then Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
11 And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand.
12 And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
13 But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Bethhoron, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.
14 Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
15 Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?
16 And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.
17 Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face.
18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.
19 Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?
20 But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.
21 So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
22 And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.
23 And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
24 And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obededom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.
25 And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.
26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?
27 Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the Lord they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.
28 And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
