Amaziah King of Judah(A)(B)(C)
25 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 2 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not wholeheartedly.(D) 3 After the kingdom was firmly in his control, he executed the officials who had murdered his father the king. 4 Yet he did not put their children to death, but acted in accordance with what is written in the Law, in the Book of Moses,(E) where the Lord commanded: “Parents shall not be put to death for their children, nor children be put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.”[a](F)
5 Amaziah called the people of Judah together and assigned them according to their families to commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin. He then mustered(G) those twenty years old(H) or more and found that there were three hundred thousand men fit for military service,(I) able to handle the spear and shield. 6 He also hired a hundred thousand fighting men from Israel for a hundred talents[b] of silver.
7 But a man of God came to him and said, “Your Majesty, these troops from Israel(J) must not march with you, for the Lord is not with Israel—not with any of the people of Ephraim. 8 Even if you go and fight courageously in battle, God will overthrow you before the enemy, for God has the power to help or to overthrow.”(K)
9 Amaziah asked the man of God, “But what about the hundred talents I paid for these Israelite troops?”
The man of God replied, “The Lord can give you much more than that.”(L)
10 So Amaziah dismissed the troops who had come to him from Ephraim and sent them home. They were furious with Judah and left for home in a great rage.(M)
11 Amaziah then marshaled his strength and led his army to the Valley of Salt, where he killed ten thousand men of Seir. 12 The army of Judah also captured ten thousand men alive, took them to the top of a cliff and threw them down so that all were dashed to pieces.(N)
13 Meanwhile the troops that Amaziah had sent back and had not allowed to take part in the war raided towns belonging to Judah from Samaria to Beth Horon. They killed three thousand people and carried off great quantities of plunder.
14 When Amaziah returned from slaughtering the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the people of Seir. He set them up as his own gods,(O) bowed down to them and burned sacrifices to them. 15 The anger of the Lord burned against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him, who said, “Why do you consult this people’s gods, which could not save(P) their own people from your hand?”
16 While he was still speaking, the king said to him, “Have we appointed you an adviser to the king? Stop! Why be struck down?”
So the prophet stopped but said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”
17 After Amaziah king of Judah consulted his advisers, he sent this challenge to Jehoash[c] son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel: “Come, let us face each other in battle.”
18 But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah: “A thistle(Q) in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle underfoot. 19 You say to yourself that you have defeated Edom, and now you are arrogant and proud. But stay at home! Why ask for trouble and cause your own downfall and that of Judah also?”
20 Amaziah, however, would not listen, for God so worked that he might deliver them into the hands of Jehoash, because they sought the gods of Edom.(R) 21 So Jehoash king of Israel attacked. He and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh in Judah. 22 Judah was routed by Israel, and every man fled to his home. 23 Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Ahaziah,[d] at Beth Shemesh. Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate(S) to the Corner Gate(T)—a section about four hundred cubits[e] long. 24 He took all the gold and silver and all the articles found in the temple of God that had been in the care of Obed-Edom,(U) together with the palace treasures and the hostages, and returned to Samaria.
25 Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel. 26 As for the other events of Amaziah’s reign, from beginning to end, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel? 27 From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the Lord, they conspired against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish(V), but they sent men after him to Lachish and killed him there. 28 He was brought back by horse and was buried with his ancestors in the City of Judah.[f]

25 Amasías tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó durante veintinueve años. Su madre se llamaba Joadán y era de Jerusalén. 2 Actuó correctamente ante el Señor, aunque no fue totalmente intachable. 3 Cuando consolidó su soberanía, mató a los súbditos que habían asesinado a su padre, el rey. 4 Pero no mató a sus hijos, de acuerdo con lo escrito en la ley de Moisés, promulgada por el Señor: “Los padres no morirán por las culpas de los hijos, ni los hijos por las culpas de los padres. Cada cual morirá por su propio pecado”.
5 Amasías reunió a Judá y lo organizó por familias paternas, al mando de jefes de millar y de cien para todo Judá y Benjamín. Hizo el censo de los mayores de veinte años y resultaron trescientos mil soldados escogidos, aptos para el ejército y armados de lanza y escudo. 6 Reclutó también como mercenarios a cien mil guerreros de Israel por cien talentos de plata. 7 Pero un profeta se presentó ante él y le dijo:
— Majestad, no te apoyes en el ejército israelita pues el Señor no está con Israel ni con los efraimitas. 8 Y si vas así, creyéndote reforzado para la batalla, Dios te hará caer ante el enemigo, pues Dios tiene el poder de apoyar y hacer caer.
9 Amasías preguntó al profeta:
— ¿Y qué va a pasar con los cien talentos de plata que he entregado a la tropa de Israel?
El profeta le respondió:
— El Señor te los devolverá aumentados.
10 Entonces Amasías licenció a la tropa que había traído de Efraín para que se fuese a casa. Pero ellos se enfurecieron contra Judá y volvieron a sus casas muy enojados. 11 Amasías se armó de valor y al frente de su ejército marchó hacia el valle de la Sal, donde mató a diez mil hombres de Seír. 12 Los judaítas capturaron vivos a otros diez mil, los subieron a la cima de un peñasco, los arrojaron desde allí y los estrellaron a todos. 13 Mientras tanto, los mercenarios de la tropa licenciada por Amasías para que no lo acompañara en la batalla invadieron las ciudades de Judá entre Samaría y Bet Jorón, mataron a tres mil personas y capturaron un cuantioso botín.
14 Cuando Amasías regresó de derrotar a los edomitas, trajo consigo a los dioses de Seir y los convirtió en sus propios dioses, adorándolos y quemándoles incienso. 15 El Señor se enfureció contra Amasías y le envió un profeta a decirle:
— ¿Por qué recurres a unos dioses que no han podido salvar a su pueblo de tu poder?
16 Mientras hablaba, Amasías le interrumpió:
— ¿Quién te ha nombrado consejero del rey? ¡Cállate, si no quieres que te maten!
El profeta concluyó diciendo:
— Sé muy bien que Dios ha decidido aniquilarte, por actuar así y no escuchar mi consejo.
17 Amasías, rey de Judá, pidió consejo y envió a decir a Joás, el hijo de Joacaz y nieto de Jehú, rey de Israel:
— ¡Ven a que nos veamos las caras!
18 Pero Joás, el rey de Israel, mandó responder así a Amasías, el rey de Judá:
— El cardo del Líbano mandó esta embajada al cedro del Líbano: “Dale tu hija por esposa a mi hijo”. Pero pasó por allí un animal silvestre del Líbano y pisoteó el cardo. 19 Presumes de haber derrotado estrepitosamente a Edom y te has envalentonado por la fama conseguida. Pero ahora quédate en tu casa. ¿Por qué te empeñas en atraer la desgracia sobre ti y sobre Judá?
20 Pero Amasías no le hizo caso, porque Dios había decidido entregarlo en manos de Joás por haber recurrido a los dioses de Edom. 21 Entonces Joás, el rey de Israel, subió a verse las caras con Amasías, el rey de Judá, en Bet Semes, que está en territorio de Judá. 22 Judá cayó derrotado ante Israel y cada cual huyó a su casa. 23 Joás, el rey de Israel, hizo prisionero en Bet Semes a Amasías, el rey de Judá, hijo de Joás y nieto de Ocozías. Luego fue a Jerusalén y abrió una brecha de unos doscientos metros en su muralla, desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la Puerta de la Esquina. 24 Se apoderó, además, de todo el oro y la plata y de todos los objetos que había en el Templo al cargo de Obededón y en el tesoro del palacio real; tomó algunos rehenes y regresó a Samaría.
25 Amasías, el rey de Judá, sobrevivió quince años a Joás, el hijo de Ocozías, rey de Israel. 26 El resto de la historia de Amasías, de principio a fin, está escrito en el libro de los Reyes de Judá e Israel. 27 Algún tiempo después de que Amasías se apartara del Señor, tramaron contra él una conspiración en Jerusalén y huyó a Laquis. Pero enviaron gente a Laquis en su persecución y lo mataron allí. 28 Luego lo transportaron en caballos a Jerusalén y lo enterraron con sus antepasados en la ciudad de David.

25 Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a perfect heart.
3 Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father.
4 But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the Lord commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin.
5 Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.
6 He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver.
7 But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the Lord is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
8 But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down.
9 And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The Lord is able to give thee much more than this.
10 Then Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger.
11 And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand.
12 And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
13 But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Bethhoron, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.
14 Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.
15 Wherefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand?
16 And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.
17 Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face.
18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle.
19 Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?
20 But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom.
21 So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
22 And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent.
23 And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
24 And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obededom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria.
25 And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years.
26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel?
27 Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the Lord they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.
28 And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
