2 Salómon bauð að reisa skyldi musteri nafni Drottins og konungshöll handa sjálfum sér.
2 Og Salómon taldi frá sjötíu þúsund burðarmenn og áttatíu þúsund steinhöggvara á fjöllunum, og setti þrjú þúsund og sex hundruð umsjónarmenn yfir þá.
3 Og Salómon gjörði Húram, konungi í Týrus, svolátandi orðsending: "Eins og þú breyttir við Davíð föður minn, er þú sendir honum sedrustré, svo að hann gæti byggt sér höll til bústaðar,
4 svo ætla ég nú að reisa musteri nafni Drottins, Guðs míns, er ég ætla að helga honum, til þess að færa ilmreykelsisfórnir frammi fyrir honum, til þess stöðugt að annast um raðsettu brauðin, til þess að færa brennifórn kvelds og morgna, á hvíldardögum, tunglkomudögum og löghátíðum Drottins, Guðs vors. Skal svo vera um aldur og ævi í Ísrael.
5 Og musterið, er ég ætla að reisa, á að verða mikið, því að vor Guð er meiri en allir guðir.
6 En hver myndi vera fær um að reisa honum hús? Því að himinninn og himnanna himnar taka hann ekki, og hver er ég, að ég reisi honum hús, nema ef vera skyldi til þess að brenna reykelsi frammi fyrir honum.
7 Send þú mér nú mann, sem er hagur á gull, silfur, eir og járn, kann að vinna úr rauðum purpura, skarlati og bláum purpura, og kann að útskurði, ásamt þeim hagleiksmönnum, er með mér eru í Júda og Jerúsalem og Davíð faðir minn hefir til fengið.
8 Send þú mér og sedrusvið, kýpresvið og sandelvið frá Líbanon, því að ég veit, að menn þínir kunna að því að höggva tré á Líbanon, og skulu mínir menn vera með þínum mönnum.
9 Og ég þarf á afar miklum viði að halda, því að musterið, er ég ætla að reisa, á að verða mikið og undursamlegt.
10 En viðarhöggsmönnunum frá þér, þeim er trén höggva, gef ég til matar tuttugu þúsund kór af hveiti og tuttugu þúsund kór af byggi, tuttugu þúsund bat af víni og tuttugu þúsund bat af olíu."
11 Húram, konungur í Týrus, svaraði bréflega og sendi til Salómons: "Af því að Drottinn elskar lýð sinn, hefir hann gjört þig að konungi yfir þeim."
12 Og Húram mælti: "Lofaður sé Drottinn, Guð Ísraels, er gjört hefir himin og jörð, að hann hefir gefið Davíð konungi vitran son, sem hefir til að bera skyn og hyggindi til þess að reisa Drottni musteri og sjálfum sér konungshöll.
13 Og nú sendi ég mann, vitran og velkunnandi, Húram Abí,
14 son konu af Dans ætt, en faðir hans er týrverskur maður. Hann kann að smíða úr gulli, silfri, eiri og járni, steini og tré og að vinna úr rauðum og bláum purpura, baðmull og skarlati, kann að hvers konar útskurði, og getur gjört hverja þá smíð, er honum verður falin, ásamt hagleiksmönnum þínum og hagleiksmönnum Davíðs föður þíns, herra míns.
15 Sendi þá herra minn þjónum sínum hveitið, byggið, olíuna og vínið, sem hann hefir um mælt.
16 En vér skulum höggva tré á Líbanon, eins mikið og þú þarft, og færa þér þau í flotum sjóveg til Jafó, og mátt þú þá flytja þau upp til Jerúsalem."
17 Og Salómon taldi útlenda menn, er voru í Ísraelslandi, eftir tali því á þeim, er Davíð faðir hans hafði gjöra látið, og reyndust þeir að vera hundrað fimmtíu og þrjú þúsund og sex hundruð.
18 Af þeim gjörði hann sjötíu þúsund að burðarmönnum, áttatíu þúsund að steinhöggvurum í fjöllunum og þrjú þúsund og sex hundruð að umsjónarmönnum til þess að halda fólkinu til vinnu.

Solomon’s Letter to Hiram
2 Solomon decided to build a temple for the name of the Lord and a royal palace for himself,(A) 2 so he assigned 70,000 men as porters, 80,000 men as stonecutters in the mountains, and 3,600 as supervisors over them.(B)
3 Then Solomon sent word to King Hiram[a](C) of Tyre:(D)
Do for me what you did for my father David. You sent him cedars to build him a house to live in.(E) 4 Now I am building a temple for the name of the Lord my God in order to dedicate it to him for burning fragrant incense before him,(F) for displaying the rows of the Bread of the Presence continuously,(G) and for sacrificing burnt offerings for the morning and the evening,(H) the Sabbaths(I) and the New Moons, and the appointed festivals of the Lord our God. This is ordained for Israel permanently. 5 The temple that I am building will be great, for our God is greater than any of the gods.(J) 6 But who is able to build a temple for him, since even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain him?(K) Who am I then that I should build a temple for him except as a place to burn incense before him? 7 Therefore, send me a craftsman who is skilled in engraving to work with gold, silver, bronze, and iron, and with purple, crimson, and blue yarn. He will work with the craftsmen who are with me in Judah and Jerusalem,(L) appointed by my father David.(M) 8 Also, send me cedar, cypress, and algum[b](N) logs from Lebanon, for I know that your servants know how to cut the trees of Lebanon. Note that my servants will be with your servants(O) 9 to prepare logs for me in abundance because the temple I am building will be great and wondrous. 10 I will give your servants, the woodcutters who cut the trees, four million four hundred thousand litres[c] of wheat flour, four million four hundred thousand litres of barley, four hundred and forty thousand litres[d] of wine, and four hundred and forty thousand litres of oil.
Hiram’s Reply
11 Then King Hiram of Tyre wrote a letter[e] and sent it to Solomon:
Because the Lord loves his people, he set you over them as king.(P)
12 Hiram also said:
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who made the heavens and the earth!(Q) He gave King David a wise son with insight and understanding,(R) who will build a temple for the Lord and a royal palace for himself.(S) 13 I have now sent Huram-abi,[f] a skilful man who has understanding.(T) 14 He is the son of a woman from the daughters of Dan. His father is a man of Tyre. He knows how to work with gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, and wood, with purple, blue, crimson yarn, and fine linen. He knows how to do all kinds of engraving and to execute any design that may be given him. I have sent him to be with your craftsmen and the craftsmen of my lord, your father David. 15 Now, let my lord send the wheat, barley, oil, and wine to his servants as promised.(U) 16 We will cut logs from Lebanon, as many as you need, and bring them to you as rafts by sea to Joppa. You can then take them up to Jerusalem.(V)
Solomon’s Workforce
17 Solomon took a census of all the male resident foreigners in the land of Israel, after the census that his father David had conducted,(W) and the total was 153,600. 18 Solomon made 70,000 of them porters, 80,000 stonecutters in the mountains, and 3,600 supervisors to make the people work.(X)
