亚撒作犹大王(A)
14 亚比雅和他的列祖同睡，埋葬在大卫城里，他的儿子亚撒接续他作王。亚撒在世的日子，国中太平了十年。（本节在《马索拉文本》为13:23）
2 亚撒行耶和华他的 神看为善为正的事。（本节在《马索拉文本》为14:1） 3 他除掉外族人的祭坛和邱坛，打断神柱，砍下亚舍拉， 4 吩咐犹大人寻求耶和华他们列祖的 神，遵行他的律法和诫命。 5 他又在犹大各城中，除掉邱坛和香坛。那时全国在他的统治下享受太平。 6 他又在犹大建造了几座设防城，因为国中太平，多年没有战争，耶和华使他享受安宁。 7 他对犹大人说：“我们要建造这些城，在四周筑墙，建造城楼，安设城门，制作门闩。这地还属于我们，是因为我们寻求耶和华我们的 神；我们既然寻求他，他就使我们四境平安。”于是他们兴工建造，事事顺利。 8 亚撒的军队，拿大盾牌和矛枪的犹大人，共有三十万；拿小盾牌和拉弓的便雅悯人，共有二十八万；他们都是英勇的战士。
亚撒战胜古实人谢拉
9 那时有古实人谢拉率领一百万军队，战车三百辆，前来攻打犹大人；他来到了玛利沙。 10 于是亚撒出去迎战；他们就在玛利沙的洗法谷列阵相对。 11 亚撒呼求耶和华他的 神说：“耶和华啊，强弱悬殊，除你以外没有别的帮助。耶和华我们的 神啊，求你帮助我们。因为我们倚靠你，奉你的名去对抗这大军。耶和华啊，你是我们的 神，不要让人胜过你。” 12 于是耶和华在亚撒和犹大人面前，使古实人大败，古实人就逃跑。 13 亚撒和跟随他的人民追赶他们，直到基拉耳；古实人被杀的很多，不能恢复强盛；因为他们在耶和华和他的军队面前被击溃了；犹大人夺取了极多战利品。 14 他们又攻击基拉耳周围的一切城市，因为各城的人都惧怕耶和华。犹大人又把各城洗掠一空，因为城中的财物甚多。 15 他们又毁坏了牲畜的棚，牵走了很多的羊和骆驼，然后回耶路撒冷去了。

Asa, koning van Juda
14 Abiam stierf en werd begraven in de 'Stad van David'. Zijn zoon Asa werd na hem koning van Juda. Toen Asa koning was, had het land tien jaar rust. 2 Hij leefde zoals zijn Heer God het wilde. 3 Hij haalde de altaren voor de afgoden en de offerplaatsen weg, sloeg de godenbeelden kapot en hakte de heilige palen om. 4 Hij beval de Judeeërs om de Heer, de God van hun voorouders, te dienen en zich aan Gods wet te houden. 5 In alle steden van Juda haalde hij de offerplaatsen en de beelden voor de zonnegod weg. In de tijd dat hij regeerde, had het koninkrijk rust.
6 Hij bouwde muren en torens rond een aantal steden in Juda, want het land had rust. Er werden al die jaren geen oorlogen tegen hem gevoerd. Want de Heer gaf hem vrede. 7 Asa zei tegen de bewoners van Juda: "Laten we deze steden versterken met muren, torens en deuren met grendels. Want het land is nog steeds van ons, omdat we onze Heer God dienen. Daarom heeft Hij ons aan alle grenzen rust gegeven." Zo konden ze rustig bouwen. En het land had voorspoed.
8 Asa had een leger met 300.000 mannen uit de stam van Juda, bewapend met schilden en speren, en 280.000 mannen uit de stam van Benjamin, bewapend met pijl en boog en een klein schild. Het waren allemaal dappere mannen.
9 Op een keer viel Zera uit Ethiopië Asa aan met een ontelbaar groot leger en 300 strijdwagens. Hij kwam tot bij Maresa. 10 Asa trok ook met zijn leger naar Maresa. In het Sefata-dal kwamen de legers tegenover elkaar te staan. 11 Toen riep Asa zijn Heer God om hulp. Hij zei: "Heer, U kan iedereen helpen. Het maakt voor U niet uit of hij een klein of een groot leger heeft. Help ons, Heer God! Want vol vertrouwen op U zijn we hier gekomen om te strijden tegen dit enorme leger. Heer, U bent onze God. U bent machtiger dan mensen!"
12 En de Heer zorgde ervoor dat het Ethiopische leger de strijd verloor van Asa en Juda. Het sloeg op de vlucht. 13 Asa achtervolgde het met zijn leger tot bij Gerar. Hij doodde zoveel mannen, dat ze niets meer tegen Asa konden beginnen. Ze werden volkomen verslagen door de Heer en zijn leger. Asa veroverde een enorme buit. 14 Ook veroverden ze alle steden in de buurt van Gerar. Dat lukte doordat de bewoners door de Heer in paniek gebracht waren. Asa's leger plunderde de steden helemaal leeg, want er was veel te halen. 15 Ook de tentenkampen van de herders overvielen ze. Ze namen grote aantallen schapen, geiten en kamelen mee. Daarna gingen ze naar Jeruzalem terug.

Abijah dies
14 Abijah died and they buried him beside his ancestors in the City of David. Abijah's son Asa became king after him. The country had peace for ten years while Asa was king.
Asa rules Judah as king
2 Asa did things that pleased the Lord his God. 3 He removed the altars and other places where people worshipped foreign gods. He broke the stone pillars and he cut down the Asherah poles.[a] 4 Asa commanded the people of Judah to worship the Lord, the God of their ancestors. He told them to obey God's law and his commands. 5 He removed the altars on the hills. He also removed the altars in all Judah's cities where people burned incense. There was peace in his kingdom while he ruled.
6 While there was peace in the land, Asa made the cities of Judah strong and safe. No enemies fought wars against Judah during that time. The Lord gave Asa rest from any trouble.
7 Asa said to Judah's people, ‘We should build these towns and make them stronger. We must put walls around them, with towers and strong gates. Judah still belongs to us because we have obeyed the Lord our God. He has made us safe from our enemies all around us.’
So the people made these towns strong. Everything went well for them.
Zerah attacks Asa
8 Asa had an army of 300,000 men from Judah. They carried big shields and spears. He also had 280,000 men from Benjamin's tribe. Those men carried small shields and they could shoot arrows with their bows. They were all brave soldiers who could fight well.
9 A man from Ethiopia called Zerah marched out to attack Judah. He had a very big army of a million soldiers and 300 chariots. When he reached Mareshah, 10 Asa went out to fight against him. The two armies prepared to fight a battle in Zephathah valley, near Mareshah.
11 Then Asa called out to the Lord his God to help him. He prayed, ‘There is nobody like you Lord. You have power to help a few weak people against many strong people. Help us, Lord our God, because we trust you. We want people to give honour to your name. That is why we have come to fight against this large army. Lord, you are our God. You cannot let these men win against you.’
12 So the Lord knocked down Zerah's soldiers as Asa and Judah's army attacked them. The Ethiopian soldiers ran away. 13 Asa and his soldiers chased after them until they reached Gerar. So many Ethiopian soldiers died there that their army could not fight any more. The Lord and his army completely destroyed them. Judah's soldiers carried away lots of their enemies' things for themselves.
14 The Lord caused the people in the towns near Gerar to become very afraid. So Judah's soldiers were able to attack those towns. There were many valuable things in all those towns and Judah's men took them away for themselves. 15 They also attacked the tents of the people who took care of animals. They took away many sheep and camels from there. Then they returned to Jerusalem.

- 14:3 The stone pillars were from the time before the Israelites came to the land of Canaan. They were places where people worshipped false gods.

14 So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.
2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God:
3 For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:
4 And commanded Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.
5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.
6 And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the Lord had given him rest.
7 Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the Lord our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.
8 And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.
9 And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.
10 Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.
11 And Asa cried unto the Lord his God, and said, Lord, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O Lord our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O Lord, thou art our God; let no man prevail against thee.
12 So the Lord smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.
13 And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the Lord, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.
14 And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the Lord came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.
15 They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
