Abijah rules Judah
13 Abijah[a] became king over Judah in the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam. 2 He ruled for three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah; she was Uriel’s daughter from Gibeah. When war broke out between Abijah and Jeroboam, 3 Abijah went to fight with an army of four hundred thousand select troops against Jeroboam’s select forces numbering eight hundred thousand, who were arrayed in battle formation.
4 Abijah stood on the heights of Mount Zemaraim in Ephraim’s highlands and said:
“Listen to me, Jeroboam and all Israel! 5 Surely you know that the Lord, Israel’s God, made an unbreakable covenant[b] with David and his descendants that they would rule Israel forever. 6 It was Jeroboam, Nebat’s son, the servant of Solomon, David’s son, who rebelled against his master. 7 When some useless, worthless people joined his cause, they overpowered Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, who was too young and timid to resist them. 8 And now do you intend to challenge the Lord’s royal rule, entrusted to David’s descendants? You may have a numerical advantage, as well as the gold calves Jeroboam made for you as gods. 9 But you’ve banished the Lord’s priests, Aaron’s sons, along with the Levites, so that you could appoint your own priests as other countries do. Now anyone who shows up with a young bull and seven rams can become a priest of these phony gods!
10 “But us? The Lord is our God, and we haven’t abandoned him. Aaron’s descendants serve as the Lord’s priests, assisted in the work by the Levites. 11 Every morning and every evening they offer entirely burned offerings and fragrant incense to the Lord, and set out bread in stacks upon a clean table. At night they light the lamps on the gold lampstand. Yes, while you are abandoning the Lord our God, we are doing what he requires. 12 Listen! God is on our side, at our head, along with his priests, who are ready to sound the battle trumpets against you. So, Israelites, don’t fight against the Lord, the God of your ancestors, for you won’t succeed!”
13 Meanwhile, Jeroboam had sent troops around behind them for an ambush so that the main force was in front of Judah while the ambush was behind. 14 When Judah looked around and suddenly realized that they were surrounded, they cried out to the Lord while the priests sounded the trumpets 15 and raised the battle cry. When they raised the battle cry, God defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16 So the Israelites fled before Judah, and God gave Judah the victory. 17 Abijah and his people struck them severely: five hundred thousand select warriors were killed. 18 Israel was subdued on that occasion, and Judah succeeded because they relied on the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took these cities away from him: Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephron,[c] along with their villages. 20 Jeroboam failed to regain power during the time of Abijah. The Lord finally struck him down, and he died. 21 Abijah, however, grew strong. He married fourteen wives; he had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. 22 The rest of Abijah’s deeds, what he did and what he said, are written in the account of the prophet Iddo.

Abijah Reigns over Judah
13 In the eighteenth year of King Jerobo′am Abi′jah began to reign over Judah. 2 He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micai′ah the daughter of U′riel of Gib′eah.
Now there was war between Abi′jah and Jerobo′am. 3 Abi′jah went out to battle having an army of valiant men of war, four hundred thousand picked men; and Jerobo′am drew up his line of battle against him with eight hundred thousand picked mighty warriors. 4 Then Abi′jah stood up on Mount Zemara′im which is in the hill country of E′phraim, and said, “Hear me, O Jerobo′am and all Israel! 5 Ought you not to know that the Lord God of Israel gave the kingship over Israel for ever to David and his sons by a covenant of salt? 6 Yet Jerobo′am the son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord; 7 and certain worthless scoundrels gathered about him and defied Rehobo′am the son of Solomon, when Rehobo′am was young and irresolute and could not withstand them.
8 “And now you think to withstand the kingdom of the Lord in the hand of the sons of David, because you are a great multitude and have with you the golden calves which Jerobo′am made you for gods. 9 Have you not driven out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull or seven rams becomes a priest of what are no gods. 10 But as for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken him. We have priests ministering to the Lord who are sons of Aaron, and Levites for their service. 11 They offer to the Lord every morning and every evening burnt offerings and incense of sweet spices, set out the showbread on the table of pure gold, and care for the golden lampstand that its lamps may burn every evening; for we keep the charge of the Lord our God, but you have forsaken him. 12 Behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with their battle trumpets to sound the call to battle against you. O sons of Israel, do not fight against the Lord, the God of your fathers; for you cannot succeed.”
13 Jerobo′am had sent an ambush around to come on them from behind; thus his troops[a] were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them. 14 And when Judah looked, behold, the battle was before and behind them; and they cried to the Lord, and the priests blew the trumpets. 15 Then the men of Judah raised the battle shout. And when the men of Judah shouted, God defeated Jerobo′am and all Israel before Abi′jah and Judah. 16 The men of Israel fled before Judah, and God gave them into their hand. 17 Abi′jah and his people slew them with a great slaughter; so there fell slain of Israel five hundred thousand picked men. 18 Thus the men of Israel were subdued at that time, and the men of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the Lord, the God of their fathers. 19 And Abi′jah pursued Jerobo′am, and took cities from him, Bethel with its villages and Jesha′nah with its villages and Ephron[b] with its villages. 20 Jerobo′am did not recover his power in the days of Abi′jah; and the Lord smote him, and he died. 21 But Abi′jah grew mighty. And he took fourteen wives, and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. 22 The rest of the acts of Abi′jah, his ways and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.

13 A los dieciocho años del rey Jeroboam, reinó Abías sobre Judá,
2 y reinó tres años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Micaía hija de Uriel de Guibeá. Y hubo guerra entre Abías y Jeroboam.
3 Entonces Abías ordenó batalla con un ejército de cuatrocientos mil hombres de guerra, valerosos y escogidos; y Jeroboam ordenó batalla contra él con ochocientos mil hombres escogidos, fuertes y valerosos.

4 Y se levantó Abías sobre el monte de Zemaráyim, que está en los montes de Efraín, y dijo: Oídme, Jeroboam y todo Israel.
5 ¿No sabéis vosotros que Jehová Dios de Israel dio el reino a David sobre Israel para siempre, a él y a sus hijos, bajo pacto de sal?

7 Y se juntaron con él hombres vanos y perversos, y pudieron más que Roboam hijo de Salomón, porque Roboam era joven y pusilánime, y no se defendió de ellos.
8 Y ahora vosotros tratáis de resistir al reino de Jehová en mano de los hijos de David, porque sois muchos, y tenéis con vosotros los becerros de oro que Jeroboam os hizo por dioses.
9 ¿No habéis arrojado vosotros a los sacerdotes de Jehová, a los hijos de Aarón y a los levitas, y os habéis designado sacerdotes a la manera de los pueblos de otras tierras, para que cualquiera venga a consagrarse con un becerro y siete carneros, y así sea sacerdote de los que no son dioses?
10 Mas en cuanto a nosotros, Jehová es nuestro Dios, y no le hemos dejado; y los sacerdotes que ministran delante de Jehová son los hijos de Aarón, y los que están en la obra son levitas,
11 los cuales queman para Jehová los holocaustos cada mañana y cada tarde, y el incienso aromático; y ponen los panes sobre la mesa limpia, y el candelero de oro con sus lámparas para que ardan cada tarde; porque nosotros guardamos la ordenanza de Jehová nuestro Dios, mas vosotros le habéis dejado.
12 Y he aquí Dios está con nosotros por jefe, y sus sacerdotes con las trompetas del júbilo para que suenen contra vosotros. Oh hijos de Israel, no peléis contra Jehová el Dios de vuestros padres, porque no prosperaréis.

13 Pero Jeroboam hizo tender una emboscada para venir a ellos por la espalda; y estando así delante de ellos, la emboscada estaba a espaldas de Judá.
14 Y cuando miró Judá, he aquí que tenía batalla por delante y a las espaldas; por lo que clamaron a Jehová, y los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas.
15 Entonces los de Judá gritaron con fuerza; y así que ellos alzaron el grito, Dios desbarató a Jeroboam y a todo Israel delante de Abías y de Judá;
16 y huyeron los hijos de Israel delante de Judá, y Dios los entregó en sus manos.
17 Y Abías y su gente hicieron en ellos una gran matanza, y cayeron heridos de Israel quinientos mil hombres escogidos.
18 Así fueron humillados los hijos de Israel en aquel tiempo, y los hijos de Judá prevalecieron, porque se apoyaban en Jehová el Dios de sus padres.
19 Y siguió Abías a Jeroboam, y le tomó algunas ciudades, a Betel con sus aldeas, a Jesaná con sus aldeas, y a Efraín con sus aldeas.
20 Y nunca más tuvo Jeroboam poder en los días de Abías; y Jehová lo hirió, y murió.
21 Pero Abías se hizo más poderoso. Tomó catorce mujeres, y engendró veintidós hijos y dieciséis hijas.

Abijah King of Judah(A)
13 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Jeroboam, Abijah became king of Judah, 2 and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Maakah,[a](B) a daughter[b] of Uriel of Gibeah.
There was war between Abijah(C) and Jeroboam.(D) 3 Abijah went into battle with an army of four hundred thousand able fighting men, and Jeroboam drew up a battle line against him with eight hundred thousand able troops.
4 Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim,(E) in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Jeroboam and all Israel,(F) listen to me! 5 Don’t you know that the Lord, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever(G) by a covenant of salt?(H) 6 Yet Jeroboam son of Nebat, an official of Solomon son of David, rebelled(I) against his master. 7 Some worthless scoundrels(J) gathered around him and opposed Rehoboam son of Solomon when he was young and indecisive(K) and not strong enough to resist them.
8 “And now you plan to resist the kingdom of the Lord, which is in the hands of David’s descendants.(L) You are indeed a vast army and have with you(M) the golden calves(N) that Jeroboam made to be your gods. 9 But didn’t you drive out the priests(O) of the Lord,(P) the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and make priests of your own as the peoples of other lands do? Whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull(Q) and seven rams(R) may become a priest of what are not gods.(S)
10 “As for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken him. The priests who serve the Lord are sons of Aaron, and the Levites assist them. 11 Every morning and evening(T) they present burnt offerings and fragrant incense(U) to the Lord. They set out the bread on the ceremonially clean table(V) and light the lamps(W) on the gold lampstand every evening. We are observing the requirements of the Lord our God. But you have forsaken him. 12 God is with us; he is our leader. His priests with their trumpets will sound the battle cry against you.(X) People of Israel, do not fight against the Lord,(Y) the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.”(Z)
13 Now Jeroboam had sent troops around to the rear, so that while he was in front of Judah the ambush(AA) was behind them. 14 Judah turned and saw that they were being attacked at both front and rear. Then they cried out(AB) to the Lord. The priests blew their trumpets 15 and the men of Judah raised the battle cry. At the sound of their battle cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel(AC) before Abijah and Judah. 16 The Israelites fled before Judah, and God delivered(AD) them into their hands. 17 Abijah and his troops inflicted heavy losses on them, so that there were five hundred thousand casualties among Israel’s able men. 18 The Israelites were subdued on that occasion, and the people of Judah were victorious because they relied(AE) on the Lord, the God of their ancestors.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam and took from him the towns of Bethel, Jeshanah and Ephron, with their surrounding villages. 20 Jeroboam did not regain power during the time of Abijah. And the Lord struck him down and he died.
21 But Abijah grew in strength. He married fourteen wives and had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
22 The other events of Abijah’s reign, what he did and what he said, are written in the annotations of the prophet Iddo.

7 And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.
8 And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the Lord in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with your golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods.
9 Have ye not cast out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.
10 But as for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests, which minister unto the Lord, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business:
11 And they burn unto the Lord every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the Lord our God; but ye have forsaken him.
12 And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the Lord God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.
13 But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.
14 And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind: and they cried unto the Lord, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
15 Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
16 And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand.
17 And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.
18 Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the Lord God of their fathers.
19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Bethel with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephraim with the towns thereof.
20 Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and the Lord struck him, and he died.
21 But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.
22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.
