Salomão pede sabedoria

(1 Rs 3.1-15)

1 Salomão, filho do rei David, era agora o incontestado governante de Israel, porque o Senhor, seu Deus, era com ele e fez dele um poderoso rei.

2-3 Salomão decidiu convocar todos os oficiais do exército e os juízes para Gibeão; também chamou todos os chefes políticos e religiosos de Israel. Levou-os ao cimo da colina, até à tenda do encontro, construída por Moisés, o homem ao serviço do Senhor, no tempo em que tinham andado pelo deserto. 4 O rei David tinha levado a arca de Deus para Jerusalém, onde a colocou numa tenda levantada no lugar que tinha preparado, quando a mandou vir de Quiriate-Jearim. 5 Também o altar de bronze, feito por Bezalel, filho de Uri e neto de Hur, ainda ali se encontrava defronte do velho tabernáculo. 6 Salomão e aqueles que ele convocara reuniram-se diante dele, enquanto foram sacrificados 1000 holocaustos como oferta ao Senhor.

7 Nessa noite, Deus apareceu a Salomão e disse-lhe: “Pede-me o que quiseres e dar-te-ei!”

8 Salomão respondeu: “Ó Deus, tu foste extremamente bondoso para com o meu pai, David, e agora deste-me o reino. 9 Só pretendo, ó Senhor Deus, que as tuas promessas se confirmem! A tua palavra, dirigida a meu pai, David, concretizou-se e fizeste-me rei sobre um povo tão numeroso como o pó da terra! 10 Dá-me agora sabedoria e conhecimento para conduzi-lo com competência. Pois quem seria capaz de governar uma tão grande nação como esta?”

11 Deus respondeu-lhe: “Sendo que o teu maior desejo é seres capaz de servir este povo e que não pretendeste nem riquezas nem honras pessoais, nem pediste que amaldiçoasse os teus inimigos, nem tão-pouco que te desse uma longa vida, mas sabedoria e conhecimento para guiar o meu povo, 12 concedo-te o que me pediste, e ainda te darei tantas riquezas, prosperidade e honras como nenhum outro rei antes ou depois de ti! Não haverá depois de ti outro semelhante em toda a Terra!”

13 Salomão deixou a tenda do encontro, desceu a colina e voltou para Jerusalém, para iniciar o seu mandato real sobre Israel.

O esplendor de Salomão

(1 Rs 10.26-29; 2 Cr 9.25-28)

14 Organizou uma enorme força militar com 1400 carros de combate e recrutou 12 000 cavaleiros, para formarem uma guarda de proteção às cidades onde ficaram depositados os carros, ainda que alguns tivessem ficado em Jerusalém, sob o controlo direto do rei. 15 Naqueles dias, o rei tornou a prata e o ouro tão abundantes como as pedras em Jerusalém; o cedro também não tinha muito mais valor do que a madeira de uma simples figueira brava de planície. 16 Salomão enviou ao Egito especialistas no comércio de cavalos para comprarem manadas inteiras a preços especiais. 17 Por esse tempo, os carros egípcios eram vendidos por 7 quilos de prata e os cavalos por cerca de 1,7 quilos de prata, e entregues em Jerusalém. Muitos eram posteriormente vendidos a reis hititas e arameus.

1 6 The offering of Solomon at Gibeon. 8 He prayeth unto God to give him wisdom: 11 Which he giveth him, and more. 14 The number of his chariots and horsemen, 15 and of his riches.

1 Then Solomon the son of David was [a]confirmed in his kingdom: and the Lord his God was with him, and magnified him highly.

2 And Solomon [b]spake unto all Israel, to the captains of thousands, and of hundreds, and to the judges, and to all the governors in all Israel, even the chief fathers.

3 So Solomon and all the Congregation with him went to the high place that was at [c]Gibeon: for there was the Tabernacle [d]of the Congregation of God which Moses the servant of the Lord had made in the wilderness.

4 But the Ark of God had David brought up from Kirjath Jearim, when David had made preparation for it: for he had pitched a tent for it in Jerusalem.

5 Moreover, the [e]brazen altar (A)that Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur had made, did he set before the Tabernacle of the Lord: and Solomon and the Congregation sought it.

6 And Solomon offered there before the Lord upon the brazen altar that was in the Tabernacle of the Congregation: (B)even a thousand burnt offerings offered he upon it.

7 ¶ The same night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.

8 And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast showed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead.

9 Now therefore, O Lord God, let thy promise unto David my father be [f]true: for thou hast made me King over a great people, like to the dust of the earth.

10 Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may [g]go out and go in before this people: for who can judge this thy great people?

11 And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, treasures nor honor, nor the [h]lives of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life, but hast asked for thee wisdom and knowledge, that thou mightest judge my people, over whom I have made thee King,

12 Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee, and I will give thee riches and treasures and honor, so that there hath not been the like among the kings which were before thee, neither after thee shall there be the like.

13 Then Solomon came from the high place that was at Gibeon, to Jerusalem from before the Tabernacle of the Congregation, and reigned over Israel.

14 (C)And Solomon gathered the chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he placed in the [i]chariot cities, and with the King at Jerusalem.

15 And the king gave gold and silver at Jerusalem as [j]stone, and gave cedar trees as the wild fig trees, that are abundantly in the plain.

16 Also Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and (D)fine linen: [k]the King’s merchants received the fine linen for a price.

17 They came up also and brought out of Egypt some chariot, worth six hundred shekels of silver, that is an horse for an hundred and fifty: and thus they brought horses to all the kings of the Hittites, and to the kings of Aram by their [l]means.

Solomon Asks for Wisdom(A)(B)

1 Solomon son of David established(C) himself firmly over his kingdom, for the Lord his God was with(D) him and made him exceedingly great.(E)

2 Then Solomon spoke to all Israel(F)—to the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, to the judges and to all the leaders in Israel, the heads of families— 3 and Solomon and the whole assembly went to the high place at Gibeon,(G) for God’s tent of meeting(H) was there, which Moses(I) the Lord’s servant had made in the wilderness. 4 Now David had brought up the ark(J) of God from Kiriath Jearim to the place he had prepared for it, because he had pitched a tent(K) for it in Jerusalem. 5 But the bronze altar(L) that Bezalel(M) son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made was in Gibeon in front of the tabernacle of the Lord; so Solomon and the assembly inquired(N) of him there. 6 Solomon went up to the bronze altar before the Lord in the tent of meeting and offered a thousand burnt offerings on it.

7 That night God appeared(O) to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

8 Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me(P) king in his place. 9 Now, Lord God, let your promise(Q) to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth.(R) 10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead(S) this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

11 God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth,(T) possessions or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12 therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honor,(U) such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.(V)”

13 Then Solomon went to Jerusalem from the high place at Gibeon, from before the tent of meeting. And he reigned over Israel.

14 Solomon accumulated chariots(W) and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses,[a] which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. 15 The king made silver and gold(X) as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills. 16 Solomon’s horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue[b]—the royal merchants purchased them from Kue at the current price. 17 They imported a chariot(Y) from Egypt for six hundred shekels[c] of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty.[d] They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans.
