大衛數點人口(A)
21 撒但起來攻擊以色列人，引誘大衛去數點以色列人的數目。 2 於是大衛對約押和民眾的領袖說：“你們去數點以色列人，從別是巴直到但，然後回來見我，讓我知道他們的數目。” 3 約押說：“願耶和華使他的子民比現在增加百倍。我主我王啊，他們不都是我主的僕人嗎？我主為甚麼要作這事呢？為甚麼使以色列人陷在罪裡呢？” 4 但王堅持他的命令，約押不敢違抗；約押就出去，走遍以色列各地，然後回到耶路撒冷。 5 約押把數點人民的數目呈報大衛：全以色列能拿刀的人，共有一百一十萬；猶大能拿刀的人，共有四十七萬。 6 唯有利未人和便雅憫人，他沒有數點在內，因為約押厭惡王這個命令。
耶和華降罰(B)
7 神不喜悅這事，所以他擊打以色列人。 8 大衛對 神說：“我犯了重罪，因為我行了這事；現在求你除去你僕人的罪孽，因我作了十分愚昧的事。”
9 耶和華告訴大衛的先見迦得，說： 10 “你去告訴大衛，說：‘耶和華這樣說：我給你提出三件事，你可以選擇一件，我好向你施行。’” 11 於是迦得來見大衛，對他說：“耶和華這樣說：‘你可以選擇： 12 或是三年的饑荒；或是在你敵人面前逃亡，被你仇敵的刀劍追殺三個月；或是耶和華的刀攻擊三天，就是在國中發生瘟疫三日，耶和華的使者在以色列的四境施行毀滅。’現在你考慮一下，我該用甚麼話回覆那差派我來的。” 13 大衛對迦得說：“我十分作難，我情願落在耶和華的手裡，因為他有極豐盛的憐憫，我不願落在人的手裡。”

18 耶和華的使者吩咐迦得去告訴大衛，叫他上去，在耶布斯人阿珥楠的禾場上，為耶和華築一座祭壇。 19 大衛就照著迦得奉耶和華的名所說的話上去了。 20 那時阿珥楠正在打麥子；阿珥楠轉過身來看見了天使，就和他的四個兒子一起躲藏起來。 21 大衛來到阿珥楠那裡，阿珥楠看見大衛，就從禾場上出來，臉伏於地，向大衛下拜。 22 大衛對阿珥楠說：“請把這塊禾場的地讓給我，我要在這裡為耶和華築一座祭壇，請你算足價銀讓給我，使民間的瘟疫可以止息。” 23 阿珥楠對大衛說：“只管拿去吧，我主我王看怎樣好就怎樣行吧；你看，我把牛給你作燔祭，把打禾的用具當柴燒，拿麥子作素祭；這一切我都送給你。” 24 大衛王對阿珥楠說：“不，我必照足價銀向你買；我不能拿你的東西獻給耶和華，也不能把沒有付代價的東西獻上作燔祭。” 25 於是大衛稱了六千八百四十克金子給阿珥楠，買了那塊地。 26 大衛在那裡為耶和華築了一座祭壇，獻上燔祭和平安祭；他呼求耶和華，耶和華就應允他，從天上降火在燔祭壇上。 27 耶和華吩咐使者，他就收刀入鞘。

24 大衛王說：「不可，我一定要付你全價，我不能拿你的東西獻給耶和華，不能把白白得來的獻作燔祭。」 25 於是，大衛就用七公斤金子買了阿珥楠的麥場。 26 大衛在那裡為耶和華建了一座壇，獻上燔祭和平安祭，並求告耶和華。耶和華垂聽了他的禱告，從天上降火在祭壇上， 27 又命令天使收刀入鞘。

Folkräkning och upptäckten av tempelplatsen
(2 Sam 24:1-17)
21 Men så reste sig Satan mot Israel och fick David att börja en folkräkning i Israel.
2 David sa till Joav och folkets överbefälhavare: ”Gå och räkna israeliterna från Beer Sheva till Dan och meddela mig resultatet, så att jag får veta deras antal!” 3 Men Joav svarade: ”Må Herren föröka sitt folk hundra gånger! Är de inte alla dina undersåtar, min herre kung? Varför begär du, min herre, detta? Varför dra skuld över Israel?”
4 Joav fick dock böja sig för kungens ord, så Joav gick och besökte hela Israel och återvände sedan till Jerusalem. 5 Han rapporterade resultatet av mönstringen till David: i hela Israel fanns det 1 100 000 svärdbeväpnade män och 470 000 svärdbeväpnade män i Juda, 6 men han räknade inte med Levis och Benjamins stammar, för han fann kungens befallning avskyvärd. 7 Denna befallning misshagade också Gud, och han straffade därför Israel.
8 Då sa David till Gud: ”Jag har begått en svår synd när jag gjort detta. Förlåt mig, din tjänare, min skuld! Jag har gjort något mycket dåraktigt.”
9 Då sa Herren till Gad, Davids siare: 10 ”Gå och säg till David: ’Så säger Herren: ”Tre ting lägger jag fram för dig. Välj ett av dem, så låter jag det drabba dig.” ’ ”
11 Gad gick till David och sa till honom: ”Så säger Herren: ’Gör ditt val: 12 tre års hungersnöd, tre månaders flykt för dina fiender utan att undkomma deras svärd, eller tre dagar av Herrens svärd, en dödlig pest som Herrens ängel ska låta komma över varje del av landet.’ Tänk över vilket svar jag ska ge honom som har sänt mig.”
13 ”Jag är i stor vånda”, sa David till Gad. ”Låt mig falla i Herrens händer, för Herrens barmhärtighet är stor. I människors händer vill jag inte falla.”
14 Herren sände då en pest över Israel och 70 000 män dog av den. 15 Gud sände en ängel för att förstöra Jerusalem, men när han skulle förstöra staden, såg Herren det och ångrade det onda och sa till ängeln som dödade folket: ”Det är nog! Dra tillbaka din hand!” Herrens ängel stod just då vid jevusén Ornans[a] tröskplats.
16 David fick se Herrens ängel stå där mellan himmel och jord och peka mot Jerusalem med sitt dragna svärd. Då föll han och de äldste ner på sina ansikten, klädda i säcktyg.
17 David sa till Gud: ”Jag var väl den som gav befallning om folkräkningen! Jag är den som har syndat och gjort det onda. Men vad har denna min hjord gjort? Herre, min Gud, låt ditt straff drabba mig och min familj, men låt inte ditt eget folk plågas!”
18 Herrens ängel befallde då Gad att säga till David att gå upp och bygga ett altare åt Herren på jevusén Ornans tröskplats. 19 Då gick David, som Gad hade talat i Herrens namn. 20 Ornan, som höll på att tröska vete, vände sig om och såg ängeln. Hans fyra söner som var med honom gömde sig. 21 När David kom till Ornan och han såg honom, lämnade han tröskplatsen och bugade sig till marken för David.
22 ”Ge mig tröskplatsen”, sa David till Ornan. ”Jag ska bygga ett altare där åt Herren, så att folkets plåga upphör. Låt mig få den för full betalning.” 23 ”Ta den, min herre och kung, och använd den som du vill”, sa Ornan till David. ”Här är boskap till brännoffret och tröskverktygen till ved och vete till matoffret. Jag ger dig alltsammans.” 24 Kung David svarade Ornan: ”Nej, jag vill köpa det till fullt pris. Jag kan inte ta det som är ditt och ge det till Herren eller bära fram ett brännoffer som inte kostat mig någonting.” 25 David betalade 600 siklar[b] i guld för platsen. 26 Där byggde David ett altare åt Herren och offrade brännoffer och gemenskapsoffer på det och ropade till Herren. Och Herren svarade med eld från himlen på brännofferaltaret. 27 Då befallde Herren ängeln att sticka svärdet i skidan.
28 När David såg att Herren hade svarat på hans bön på jevusén Ornans tröskplats, offrade han där. 29 Herrens boning, som Mose hade gjort i öknen, och brännofferaltaret fanns på offerplatsen i Givon vid den här tiden, 30 men David hade inte vågat gå dit och tillbe, av fruktan för Herrens ängels svärd.

David Counts the Fighting Men(A)
21 Satan(B) rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census(C) of Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count(D) the Israelites from Beersheba to Dan. Then report back to me so that I may know how many there are.”
3 But Joab replied, “May the Lord multiply his troops a hundred times over.(E) My lord the king, are they not all my lord’s subjects? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring guilt on Israel?”
4 The king’s word, however, overruled Joab; so Joab left and went throughout Israel and then came back to Jerusalem. 5 Joab reported the number of the fighting men to David: In all Israel(F) there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handle a sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.
6 But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king’s command was repulsive to him. 7 This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.
8 Then David said to God, “I have sinned greatly by doing this. Now, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing.”
9 The Lord said to Gad,(G) David’s seer,(H) 10 “Go and tell David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.’”
11 So Gad went to David and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Take your choice: 12 three years of famine,(I) three months of being swept away[a] before your enemies, with their swords overtaking you, or three days of the sword(J) of the Lord(K)—days of plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord ravaging every part of Israel.’ Now then, decide how I should answer the one who sent me.”
13 David said to Gad, “I am in deep distress. Let me fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy(L) is very great; but do not let me fall into human hands.”
14 So the Lord sent a plague on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell dead.(M) 15 And God sent an angel(N) to destroy Jerusalem.(O) But as the angel was doing so, the Lord saw it and relented(P) concerning the disaster and said to the angel who was destroying(Q) the people, “Enough! Withdraw your hand.” The angel of the Lord was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah[b] the Jebusite.
16 David looked up and saw the angel of the Lord standing between heaven and earth, with a drawn sword in his hand extended over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell facedown.(R)
17 David said to God, “Was it not I who ordered the fighting men to be counted? I, the shepherd,[c] have sinned and done wrong. These are but sheep.(S) What have they done? Lord my God, let your hand fall on me and my family,(T) but do not let this plague remain on your people.”
David Builds an Altar
18 Then the angel of the Lord ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor(U) of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 So David went up in obedience to the word that Gad had spoken in the name of the Lord.
20 While Araunah was threshing wheat,(V) he turned and saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves. 21 Then David approached, and when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.
22 David said to him, “Let me have the site of your threshing floor so I can build an altar to the Lord, that the plague on the people may be stopped. Sell it to me at the full price.”
23 Araunah said to David, “Take it! Let my lord the king do whatever pleases him. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering. I will give all this.”
24 But King David replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on paying the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
25 So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels[d] of gold for the site. 26 David built an altar to the Lord there and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. He called on the Lord, and the Lord answered him with fire(W) from heaven on the altar of burnt offering.
27 Then the Lord spoke to the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath. 28 At that time, when David saw that the Lord had answered him on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, he offered sacrifices there. 29 The tabernacle of the Lord, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.(X) 30 But David could not go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the Lord.
