1 Chronicles 11
New International Version

David Becomes King Over Israel(A)

11 All Israel(B) came together to David at Hebron(C) and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, even while Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns.(D) And the Lord your God said to you, ‘You will shepherd(E) my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.(F)’”

3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, he made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed(G) David king over Israel, as the Lord had promised through Samuel.

David Conquers Jerusalem(H)

4 David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus). The Jebusites(I) who lived there 5 said to David, “You will not get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David.

6 David had said, “Whoever leads the attack on the Jebusites will become commander in chief.” Joab(J) son of Zeruiah went up first, and so he received the command.

7 David then took up residence in the fortress, and so it was called the City of David. 8 He built up the city around it, from the terraces[a](K) to the surrounding wall, while Joab restored the rest of the city. 9 And David became more and more powerful,(L) because the Lord Almighty was with him.

David’s Mighty Warriors(M)

10 These were the chiefs of David’s mighty warriors—they, together with all Israel,(N) gave his kingship strong support to extend it over the whole land, as the Lord had promised(O)— 11 this is the list of David’s mighty warriors:(P)

Jashobeam,[b] a Hakmonite, was chief of the officers[c]; he raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.

12 Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite, one of the three mighty warriors. 13 He was with David at Pas Dammim when the Philistines gathered there for battle. At a place where there was a field full of barley, the troops fled from the Philistines. 14 But they took their stand in the middle of the field. They defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the Lord brought about a great victory.(Q)

15 Three of the thirty chiefs came down to David to the rock at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley(R) of Rephaim. 16 At that time David was in the stronghold,(S) and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 17 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 18 So the Three broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured(T) it out to the Lord. 19 “God forbid that I should do this!” he said. “Should I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives?” Because they risked their lives to bring it back, David would not drink it.

Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.

20 Abishai(U) the brother of Joab was chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. 21 He was doubly honored above the Three and became their commander, even though he was not included among them.

22 Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel,(V) performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.(W) 23 And he struck down an Egyptian who was five cubits[d] tall. Although the Egyptian had a spear like a weaver’s rod(X) in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. 24 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors. 25 He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

26 The mighty warriors were:

Asahel(Y) the brother of Joab,

Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,

27 Shammoth(Z) the Harorite,

Helez the Pelonite,

28 Ira son of Ikkesh from Tekoa,

Abiezer(AA) from Anathoth,

29 Sibbekai(AB) the Hushathite,

Ilai the Ahohite,

30 Maharai the Netophathite,

Heled son of Baanah the Netophathite,

31 Ithai son of Ribai from Gibeah in Benjamin,

Benaiah(AC) the Pirathonite,(AD)

32 Hurai from the ravines of Gaash,

Abiel the Arbathite,

33 Azmaveth the Baharumite,

Eliahba the Shaalbonite,

34 the sons of Hashem the Gizonite,

Jonathan son of Shagee the Hararite,

35 Ahiam son of Sakar the Hararite,

Eliphal son of Ur,

36 Hepher the Mekerathite,

Ahijah the Pelonite,

37 Hezro the Carmelite,

Naarai son of Ezbai,

38 Joel the brother of Nathan,

Mibhar son of Hagri,

39 Zelek the Ammonite,

Naharai the Berothite, the armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah,

40 Ira the Ithrite,

Gareb the Ithrite,

41 Uriah(AE) the Hittite,

Zabad(AF) son of Ahlai,

42 Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, who was chief of the Reubenites, and the thirty with him,

43 Hanan son of Maakah,

Joshaphat the Mithnite,

44 Uzzia the Ashterathite,(AG)

Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite,

45 Jediael son of Shimri,

his brother Joha the Tizite,

46 Eliel the Mahavite,

Jeribai and Joshaviah the sons of Elnaam,

Ithmah the Moabite,

47 Eliel, Obed and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

Đa-vít lên ngôi vua trên Ít-ra-en

11 Sau đó dân Ít-ra-en đến cùng Đa-vít ở Hếp-rôn và nói, “Nầy, chúng tôi là anh em ruột thịt [a] với ông. 2 Trong thời gian Sau-lơ làm vua, ông là người hướng dẫn dân Ít-ra-en ra trận. CHÚA là Thượng Đế ông nói cùng ông, ‘Ngươi sẽ là người chăn dân Ít-ra-en ta. Ngươi sẽ lãnh đạo họ.’”

3 Vậy các bô lão Ít-ra-en đến cùng vua Đa-vít tại Hếp-rôn. Ông lập giao ước với họ ở Hếp-rôn trước mặt CHÚA. Rồi họ đổ dầu lên Đa-vít lập ông làm vua Ít-ra-en. CHÚA đã hứa qua Ít-ra-en là việc phải xảy ra như thế.

Đa-vít chiếm được Giê-ru-sa-lem

4 Đa-vít và toàn dân Ít-ra-en đi đến thành Giê-ru-sa-lem. Lúc đó Giê-ru-sa-lem gọi là Giê-bu, và dân sống ở đó gọi là dân Giê-bu-sít. 5 Chúng bảo Đa-vít, “Ngươi không thể nào vào thành chúng ta được đâu.” Nhưng Đa-vít chiếm thành Giê-ru-sa-lem có vách kiên cố, và nó trở nên thành Đa-vít.

6 Đa-vít nói, “Ai xung phong tấn công dân Giê-bu-sít sẽ được làm chỉ huy toàn quân đội ta.” Giô-áp con trai Xê-ru-gia hướng dẫn cuộc tấn công nên ông làm chỉ huy quân đội.

7 Sau đó Đa-vít vào cư trú trong thành có vách kiên cố ấy cho nên nó mang tên là thành Đa-vít. 8 Đa-vít xây lại thành, bắt đầu nơi người ta lấp đất cho đến vách bao quanh thành. Giô-áp sửa chữa các phần khác của thành phố. 9 Đa-vít càng ngày càng mạnh. CHÚA Toàn Năng ở cùng ông.

Ba chiến sĩ anh dũng

10 Sau đây là danh sách những người cầm đầu các chiến sĩ của Đa-vít, giúp ông thêm mạnh. Tất cả dân Ít-ra-en cũng ủng hộ nước của Đa-vít. Các anh hùng nầy và toàn dân Ít-ra-en lập Đa-vít làm vua, như CHÚA đã hứa.

11 Sau đây là danh sách các chiến sĩ của Đa-vít:

Gia-sô-bê-am người Hạc-mô-nít [b]. Ông lãnh đạo nhóm ba người [c], tức các chiến sĩ anh dũng nhất của Đa-vít. Ông dùng gươm giết sạch ba trăm người cùng một lúc.

12 Kế ông có Ê-lê-a-xa, một trong Ba Chiến sĩ. Ê-lê-a-xa là con trai Đô-đai [d] gốc dân A-hô-hít. 13 Ê-lê-a-xa có mặt với Đa-vít tại Bát Đa-mim khi quân Phi-li-tin đến tấn công. Ở đó có một đồng lúa mạch. Dân Ít-ra-en trốn chạy khỏi người Phi-li-tin, 14 nhưng họ đứng lại giữa đồng lúa đó chiến đấu và giết người Phi-li-tin. CHÚA ban chiến thắng lớn cho họ.

15 Có lần, ba trong số Ba Mươi Chiến sĩ [e], tức các chiến sĩ nòng cốt của Đa-vít đến gặp ông ở tảng đá gần hang A-đu-lam. Lúc đó quân Phi-li-tin đang đóng trại trong thung lũng Rê-pha-im.

16 Lúc ấy Đa-vít đang ở trong mật khu, còn một số quân Phi-li-tin đang ở Bết-lê-hem. 17 Đa-vít quá khát nước nên ông nói, “Ôi, ước gì có ai đi lấy cho ta nước từ giếng gần cổng thành Bết-lê-hem!” 18 Cho nên Ba Người [f] đó xông qua hàng rào quân Phi-li-tin và lấy nước từ giếng gần cổng thành Bết-lê-hem. Khi họ mang nước về cho Đa-vít thì ông không chịu uống. Ông đổ nước ra trước mặt CHÚA, 19 nói rằng, “Xin CHÚA đừng để tôi uống nước nầy! Vì chẳng khác nào uống huyết của những người đã liều mạng lấy nước về cho tôi!” Cho nên Đa-vít nhất định không chịu uống. Đó là những hành vi dũng cảm của ba chiến sĩ gan dạ ấy.

Các chiến sĩ anh dũng khác

20 A-bi-sai, em Giô-áp chỉ huy Toán Ba Người. A-bi-sai dùng giáo đánh giết ba trăm binh sĩ. Ông nổi danh như Ba Người, 21 nhưng được tôn trọng hơn Ba Người [g] ấy. Ông chỉ huy Toán Ba Người dù không thuộc về toán nầy.

22 Bê-na-gia con trai Giê-hô-gia-đa là một chiến sĩ gan dạ [h] từ Cáp-xê-ên, thực hiện nhiều kỳ công. Ông giết hai trong số các chiến sĩ xuất sắc nhất của Mô-áp. Ông cũng xuống hầm đá giết một con sư tử vào một ngày tuyết rơi. 23 Bê-na-gia giết một người Ai-cập cao khoảng bảy bộ rưỡi [i] và có cây giáo lớn như trục thợ dệt. 11 Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

2 And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the Lord thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel.

3 Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the Lord; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the Lord by Samuel.

4 And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.

5 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, which is the city of David.

6 And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief.

7 And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David.

8 And he built the city round about, even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of the city.

9 So David waxed greater and greater: for the Lord of hosts was with him.

10 These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel.

11 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: he lifted up his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time.

12 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighties.

13 He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, where was a parcel of ground full of barley; and the people fled from before the Philistines.

14 And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the Philistines; and the Lord saved them by a great deliverance.

15 Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

16 And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem.

17 And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate!

18 And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the Lord.

19 And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.

20 And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them, and had a name among the three.

21 Of the three, he was more honourable than the two; for he was their captain: howbeit he attained not to the first three.

22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lionlike men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day.

23 And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear.

24 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties.

25 Behold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard.

26 Also the valiant men of the armies were, Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,

David Anointed King

11 (A)Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said, “Behold, we are your bone and flesh. 2 In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord your God said to you, (B)‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’” 3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel, (C)according to the word of the Lord by Samuel.

David Takes Jerusalem

4 And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, (D)that is, Jebus, where the Jebusites were, (E)the inhabitants of the land. 5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, “You will not come in here.” Nevertheless, David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David. 6 David said, “Whoever strikes the Jebusites first (F)shall be chief and commander.” And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief. 7 And David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David. 8 And he built the city all around from the Millo in complete circuit, and Joab repaired the rest of the city. 9 And David (G)became greater and greater, for the Lord of hosts was with him.

David's Mighty Men

10 (H)Now these are the chiefs of David's mighty men, who gave him strong support in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, (I)according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel. 11 This is an account of David's mighty men: (J)Jashobeam, a (K)Hachmonite, was (L)chief of the three.[a] He wielded his spear against 300 whom he killed at one time.

12 And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of (M)Dodo, the Ahohite. 13 He was with David at Pas-dammim (N)when the Philistines were gathered there for battle. There was a plot of ground full of barley, and the men fled from the Philistines. 14 But he took his[b] stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and killed the Philistines. And the Lord saved them by a great victory.

15 Three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David at the cave of Adullam, when the army of Philistines was encamped in the (O)Valley of Rephaim. 16 David was then in the stronghold, and the (P)garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem. 17 And David said longingly, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!” 18 Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David. But David would not drink it. He poured it out to the Lord 19 and said, “Far be it from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the lifeblood of these men? For at the risk of their lives they brought it.” Therefore he would not drink it. These things did the three mighty men.

20 Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, was chief of the thirty.[c] And he wielded his spear against 300 men and killed them and won a name beside the three. 21 He was the most renowned[d] of the thirty[e] and became their commander, but he did not attain to the three.

22 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man[f] of Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two heroes of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. 23 And he struck down an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits[g] tall. The Egyptian had in his hand a spear (Q)like a weaver's beam, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear. 24 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and won a name beside the three mighty men. 25 He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard.
