基督徒的自由
5 基督釋放了我們，是要我們得自由。所以，要站穩了，不要再被奴僕的軛轄制。
2 聽著！我保羅鄭重地告訴你們，如果你們接受割禮，基督對你們就毫無益處。 3 我再次警告所有接受割禮的人，他們必須遵守全部的律法。 4 你們若想靠遵行律法而被稱為義人，就與基督隔絕了，並且離開了上帝的恩典。 5 但我們要靠著聖靈，憑信心熱切等候所盼望的義。 6 我們既然已經在基督耶穌裡，受不受割禮根本無關緊要，藉著愛表現出來的信心才至關重要。
7 你們本來在信心的路上一直跑得很好。現在是誰攔阻了你們，叫你們不再信從真理呢？ 8 當然不是呼召你們的上帝！ 9 「一點麵酵能使整團麵發起來。」 10 我在主裡深信你們不會有二心，但無論誰攪擾你們，都必受審判。
11 弟兄姊妹，如果我仍舊主張行割禮，怎麼還會受迫害呢？如果是那樣，十字架冒犯人的地方就被消除了。 12 我恨不得那些攪擾你們的人把自己閹了[a]！
13 弟兄姊妹，你們蒙召得了自由，但不要以自由為藉口來放縱情慾，要本著愛心互相服侍， 14 因為全部的律法可以總結成一句話：「要愛鄰如己」。 15 你們要謹慎，如果你們相咬相吞，恐怕會同歸於盡。
順從聖靈而行
16 因此，我勸你們行事為人要順從聖靈的引導，這樣就不會放縱罪惡本性的私慾。 17 因為人罪惡本性的私慾與聖靈作對，聖靈也與罪惡本性的私慾作對，兩者勢不兩立，使你們不能做自己想做的事。 18 但你們如果順從聖靈的引導，就不再受律法的約束。 19 順從罪惡本性而行的事顯而易見，如淫亂、污穢、邪蕩、 20 拜偶像、行邪術、仇恨、爭吵、忌恨、惱怒、紛爭、衝突、分裂[b]、 21 嫉妒、兇殺、醉酒和荒宴無度等。我從前警告過你們，現在再一次警告你們：行這些事的人必不能承受上帝的國。
22 但聖靈所結的果子是仁愛、喜樂、和平、忍耐、恩慈、良善、信實、 23 溫柔、節制。沒有律法會禁止這些事。 24 那些屬基督的人已經把罪惡的本性和本性裡的邪情私慾都釘在十字架上了。 25 如果我們是靠聖靈生活，就當凡事順從聖靈的引導。 26 我們不要自高自大、彼此惹氣、互相嫉妒。

The Message
The Life of Freedom
5 Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you.
2-3 I am emphatic about this. The moment any one of you submits to circumcision or any other rule-keeping system, at that same moment Christ’s hard-won gift of freedom is squandered. I repeat my warning: The person who accepts the ways of circumcision trades all the advantages of the free life in Christ for the obligations of the slave life of the law.
4-6 I suspect you would never intend this, but this is what happens. When you attempt to live by your own religious plans and projects, you are cut off from Christ, you fall out of grace. Meanwhile we expectantly wait for a satisfying relationship with the Spirit. For in Christ, neither our most conscientious religion nor disregard of religion amounts to anything. What matters is something far more interior: faith expressed in love.
7-10 You were running superbly! Who cut in on you, deflecting you from the true course of obedience? This detour doesn’t come from the One who called you into the race in the first place. And please don’t toss this off as insignificant. It only takes a minute amount of yeast, you know, to permeate an entire loaf of bread. Deep down, the Master has given me confidence that you will not defect. But the one who is upsetting you, whoever he is, will bear the divine judgment.
11-12 As for the rumor that I continue to preach the ways of circumcision (as I did in those pre-Damascus Road days), that is absurd. Why would I still be persecuted, then? If I were preaching that old message, no one would be offended if I mentioned the Cross now and then—it would be so watered-down it wouldn’t matter one way or the other. Why don’t these agitators, obsessive as they are about circumcision, go all the way and castrate themselves!
13-15 It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don’t use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that’s how freedom grows. For everything we know about God’s Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself. That’s an act of true freedom. If you bite and ravage each other, watch out—in no time at all you will be annihilating each other, and where will your precious freedom be then?
16-18 My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness. For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are contrary to each other, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day. Why don’t you choose to be led by the Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence?

19-21 It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on.
This isn’t the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use your freedom this way, you will not inherit God’s kingdom.
22-23 But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.
23-24 Legalism is helpless in bringing this about; it only gets in the way. Among those who belong to Christ, everything connected with getting our own way and mindlessly responding to what everyone else calls necessities is killed off for good—crucified.
25-26 Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives. That means we will not compare ourselves with each other as if one of us were better and another worse. We have far more interesting things to do with our lives. Each of us is an original.

Une liberté à conserver
5 C'est pour la liberté que Christ nous a affranchis. Tenez donc ferme dans cette liberté et ne vous placez pas de nouveau sous la contrainte d’un esclavage.
2 Moi Paul, je vous le dis: si vous vous faites circoncire, Christ ne vous servira à rien. 3 Et j'affirme encore une fois à tout homme qui se fait circoncire qu'il est tenu de mettre en pratique la loi tout entière. 4 Vous êtes séparés de Christ, vous tous qui cherchez à être considérés comme justes dans le cadre de la loi, vous êtes déchus de la grâce. 5 Nous, c'est de la foi et par l'Esprit que nous attendons la justice espérée. 6 En effet, en Jésus-Christ, ce qui a de l’importance, ce n’est ni la circoncision ni l'incirconcision, mais seulement la foi qui agit à travers l'amour.
7 Vous couriez bien. Qui vous a arrêtés pour vous empêcher d'obéir à la vérité? 8 Cette influence ne vient pas de celui qui vous appelle. 9 Un peu de levain fait lever toute la pâte. 10 J'ai confiance dans le Seigneur qu’en ce qui vous concerne vous ne penserez pas autrement. Mais celui qui vous trouble, quel qu'il soit, en subira la condamnation. 11 Quant à moi, frères et sœurs, pourquoi suis-je encore persécuté, si je prêche encore la circoncision? Le scandale de la croix est alors supprimé! 12 Puissent-ils même se castrer, ceux qui jettent le trouble parmi vous!
13 Frères et sœurs, c’est à la liberté que vous avez été appelés. Seulement, ne faites pas de cette liberté un prétexte pour suivre les désirs de votre nature propre. Au contraire, soyez par amour serviteurs les uns des autres. 14 En effet, toute la loi est accomplie dans cette seule parole: Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même.[a] 15 Mais si vous vous mordez et vous dévorez les uns les autres, attention: vous finirez par vous détruire les uns les autres.
16 Voici donc ce que je dis: marchez par l'Esprit et vous n'accomplirez pas les désirs de votre nature propre. 17 En effet, la nature humaine a des désirs contraires à ceux de l'Esprit, et l'Esprit a des désirs contraires à ceux de la nature humaine. Ils sont opposés entre eux, de sorte que vous ne pouvez pas faire ce que vous voudriez. 18 Cependant, si vous êtes conduits par l'Esprit, vous n'êtes pas sous la loi.
19 Les œuvres de la nature humaine sont évidentes: ce sont [l'adultère,] l'immoralité sexuelle, l'impureté, la débauche, 20 l'idolâtrie, la magie, les haines, les querelles, les jalousies, les colères, les rivalités, les divisions, les sectes, 21 l'envie, [les meurtres,] l'ivrognerie, les excès de table et les choses semblables. Je vous préviens, comme je l'ai déjà fait: ceux qui ont un tel comportement n'hériteront pas du royaume de Dieu.
22 Mais le fruit de l'Esprit, c'est l'amour, la joie, la paix, la patience, la bonté, la bienveillance, la foi, la douceur, la maîtrise de soi. 23 Contre de telles attitudes, il n’y a pas de loi.
24 Ceux qui appartiennent à [Jésus-]Christ ont crucifié leur nature propre avec ses passions et ses désirs. 25 Si nous vivons par l'Esprit, laissons-nous aussi conduire par l'Esprit. 26 Ne soyons pas vaniteux en nous provoquant les uns les autres, en nous portant envie les uns aux autres.
