弟兄重逢
33 雅各遠遠看見以掃帶著四百人迎面而來，便把孩子們分別交給利亞、拉結和兩個婢女， 2 又吩咐兩個婢女和她們的孩子走在前面，利亞和她的孩子跟在後面，拉結和約瑟走在最後。 3 他自己則走在他們前面，接連俯伏下拜七次，直到他哥哥跟前。
4 以掃見到雅各，就跑上去擁抱他，親吻他，二人抱頭痛哭。 5 以掃看見跟在雅各後面的婦女和孩子，就問：「這些和你同行的是誰？」雅各說：「這些孩子是上帝施恩賜給你僕人的。」 6 雅各的兩個婢女和她們的孩子上前下拜， 7 利亞也和她的孩子上前下拜，最後約瑟和拉結也上前向以掃下拜。
8 以掃說：「我在路上遇見的那一群群牲畜是怎麼回事？」雅各回答說：「我帶來這些是要得到我主的恩待。」 9 以掃說：「弟弟，我已經有很多了，你自己留著吧！」 10 雅各說：「不，你若賞臉，就請收下！我見了你的面就像見了上帝的面，因為你這樣善侍我。 11 請你收下我的禮物吧，因為上帝恩待了我，使我富足。」雅各再三懇求，以掃才收下。
12 以掃說：「我們走吧！我陪你們走。」 13 雅各卻說：「我主知道孩子們還小，而且，我還要照料正在哺乳的牛羊，如果整天趕路，牛羊會累死。 14 倒不如請我主先走，我遷就牲畜和孩子慢慢走，我在西珥與我主會合。」
15 以掃說：「讓我給你留幾個幫手吧。」雅各說：「不用了，能得到我主的恩待就夠了。」 16 於是，以掃在當天先回西珥去了， 17 雅各卻去了疏割，在那裡為自己建造房屋，為牲畜搭起棚子。因此那地方叫疏割[a]。
18 這樣，雅各從巴旦·亞蘭平安地回到迦南的示劍城，在城外搭營居住。 19 他搭營居住的這塊地是他用一百塊銀子向示劍的父親哈抹的子孫買的。 20 雅各在那裡築了一座壇，稱之為伊利·伊羅伊·以色列[b]。

Jacob Meets Esau
33 Then Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming with 400 men. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two women who served him. 2 He put the women who served him and their children in front, and Leah and her children behind them, and Rachel and Joseph behind them. 3 Then Jacob went before them. He bowed to the ground seven times, until he came near his brother. 4 But Esau ran to meet him and put his arms around him and kissed him. And they cried.
5 Then Esau looked up and saw the women and the children. He said, “Who are these with you?” Jacob said, “They are the children whom God, in His loving-favor, has given your servant.” 6 Then the women who served Jacob came near with their children, and they bowed to the ground. 7 Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed to the ground. Then Joseph and Rachel came near and bowed to the ground.
8 Esau said, “What do you mean by all these animals I have met?” And Jacob said, “They are a gift so I may find favor in the eyes of my lord.” 9 But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.” 10 But Jacob said, “No, I ask of you, if I have found favor in your eyes, then receive my gift. For I see your face as one sees the face of God. You have received me with favor. 11 Take my gift that has been brought to you. For God has shown loving-kindness to me, and I have all I need.” So he begged him until he took it.
12 Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way. I will go with you.” 13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are weak. And there are young ones in my flocks that need milk. If they are made to go a long way in one day, all the flocks will die. 14 Let my lord go in front of his servant. And I will be slow in coming to my lord at Seir. I will go as fast as the cattle in front of me and as the children are able.” 15 So Esau said, “Let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” But Jacob said, “What need is there? Let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.” 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 But Jacob traveled to Succoth. He built his house there, and put up small buildings for his animals. So the name of the place is Succoth.
18 Now Jacob came in peace from Paddan-aram to the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan. And he put up his tents near the city. 19 He bought the piece of land where he had put up his tents for one hundred pieces of money from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father. 20 He built an altar there, and gave it the name El-Elohe-Israel.

Jacob Meets Esau
33 Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men;(A) so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two female servants.(B) 2 He put the female servants and their children(C) in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph(D) in the rear. 3 He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground(E) seven times(F) as he approached his brother.
4 But Esau(G) ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him.(H) And they wept.(I) 5 Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. “Who are these with you?” he asked.
Jacob answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.(J)”
6 Then the female servants and their children(K) approached and bowed down.(L) 7 Next, Leah and her children(M) came and bowed down.(N) Last of all came Joseph and Rachel,(O) and they too bowed down.
8 Esau asked, “What’s the meaning of all these flocks and herds I met?”(P)
“To find favor in your eyes, my lord,”(Q) he said.
9 But Esau said, “I already have plenty,(R) my brother. Keep what you have for yourself.”
10 “No, please!” said Jacob. “If I have found favor in your eyes,(S) accept this gift(T) from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God,(U) now that you have received me favorably.(V) 11 Please accept the present(W) that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me(X) and I have all I need.”(Y) And because Jacob insisted,(Z) Esau accepted it.
12 Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”
13 But Jacob said to him, “My lord(AA) knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young.(AB) If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die. 14 So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the flocks and herds(AC) before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir.(AD)”
15 Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”
“But why do that?” Jacob asked. “Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord.”(AE)
16 So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.(AF) 17 Jacob, however, went to Sukkoth,(AG) where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Sukkoth.[a]
18 After Jacob came from Paddan Aram,[b](AH) he arrived safely at the city of Shechem(AI) in Canaan and camped within sight of the city. 19 For a hundred pieces of silver,[c] he bought from the sons of Hamor,(AJ) the father of Shechem,(AK) the plot of ground(AL) where he pitched his tent.(AM) 20 There he set up an altar(AN) and called it El Elohe Israel.[d]

Jacob Meets Esau
33 Jacob saw Esau coming with 400 men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two slaves. 2 He put the slaves and their children in front, Leah and her children after them, and Rachel and Joseph last. 3 He went on ahead of them and bowed seven times with his face touching the ground as he came near his brother.
4 Then Esau ran to meet Jacob. Esau hugged him, threw his arms around him, and kissed him. They both cried. 5 When he saw the women and children, Esau asked, “Who are these people here with you?”
“The children God has graciously given me, sir,” Jacob answered.
6 Then the slaves and their children came forward and bowed down. 7 Likewise, Leah and her children came forward and bowed down. Finally, Joseph and Rachel came forward and bowed down.
8 Then Esau asked, “Why did you send this whole group ⌞of people and animals⌟ I met?”
He answered, “To win your favor, sir.”
9 Esau said, “I have enough. Keep what you have, Brother.”
10 Jacob said, “No, please take the gift I’m giving you, because I’ve seen your face as if I were seeing the face of God, and yet you welcomed me so warmly. 11 Please take the present I’ve brought you, because God has been gracious to me and has given me all that I need.” So Esau took it because Jacob insisted.
12 Then Esau said, “Let’s get ready to go, and I’ll go with you.”
13 Jacob said to him, “Sir, you know that the children are frail and that I have to take care of the flocks and cattle that are nursing their young. If they’re driven too hard for even one day, all the flocks will die. 14 Go ahead of me, sir. I will slowly and gently guide the herds that are in front of me at their pace and at the children’s pace until I come to you in Seir.”
15 Esau said, “Then let me leave some of my men with you.”
“Why do that?” Jacob asked. “I only want to win your favor, sir.”
16 That day Esau started back to Seir. 17 But Jacob moved on to Succoth, where he built a house for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is named Succoth [Shelters].
18 So having come from Paddan Aram, Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem in Canaan. He camped within sight of the city. 19 Then he bought the piece of land on which he had put up his tents. He bought it from the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for 100 pieces of silver. 20 He set up an altar there and named it God Is the God of Israel.
