17 アブラムが九十九歳になった時、主が彼に現れました。「わたしは全能の神である。わたしの命令に従って正しく生きなさい。 2-4 わたしはあなたと契約を結ぶ。あなたが大いなる国民となることを保証する契約である。これから、あなたは一つの国民だけでなく、たくさんの国々の先祖となるのだ。」主が語るのを、アブラムは地にひれ伏し、額をすりつけんばかりにして聞いていました。
5 「契約はもう一つある。わたしはあなたの名前を変える。これからは『アブラム』〔「地位の高い父」の意〕ではなく、『アブラハム』〔「国々の父」の意〕と名乗りなさい。 6 あなたの子孫を数えきれないほど増やすので、たくさんの国ができるだろう。その子孫からは王も出る。 7-8 この契約を、わたしは何世代にもわたって永遠に守り続ける。あなたとの間だけでなく、あなたの子孫との間の契約でもあるからだ。わたしがあなたの神となり、また、あなたの子孫の神となるという契約である。このカナンの全土は永久にあなたとその子孫のものだ。すなわち、わたしがあなたがたの神となる。
9-10 あなたは契約の条件を忠実に守らなければならない。あなたもあなたの子孫も、一人残らずそうしなければならない。その条件とは、男子はみな割礼を受けるということ、 11 つまり、性器の包皮の一部を切り取ることが、あなたがたがこの契約を受け入れたしるしとなる。 12 男子はみな、生まれて八日目に割礼を受けなければならない。あなたの家の子だけでなく、外国人の奴隷もみな受けなければならない。これは永遠に、あなたの子孫全員に適用すべきものである。 13 割礼は、あなたたちの体そのものが、永遠の契約にあずかっていることのしるしだからだ。 14 これを拒否する者はだれでも、わたしとの契約を破ったことになり、部族の一員とはみなされない。」
15 神はさらに続けました。「あなたの妻サライの名だが、これからは『サライ』ではなく、『サラ』〔「王女」の意〕にしなさい。 16 わたしは彼女を祝福する。彼女はあなたに男の子を産むだろう。すばらしい祝福を与えて、彼女を国々の母とする。彼女の子孫からは多くの王が出る。」
17 これを聞いたアブラハムは、地にひれ伏して神を礼拝しました。しかし、とても信じられないことなので、心の中で笑って言いました。「この私が父親になるだって？ この百歳の老人が？ それにサラだってもう九十歳だ。赤ん坊なんかできるはずがない。」 18 そこでアブラハムは神に申し上げました。「それはありがたいことです。どうぞ、イシュマエルを祝福してくださいますように。」
19 「いや、わたしはそうは言っていない。妻のサラが、あなたに男の子を産むのだ。その子をイサク〔「笑い声」の意〕と名づけなさい。わたしは永遠の契約を、彼と彼の子孫との間に結ぶ。 20 イシュマエルのことはわかった。あなたの願いどおり彼を祝福し、彼の子孫を増やして、大きな国にしよう。十二人の族長が彼から出る。 21 しかし、わたしが契約を結ぶのはイサクである。来年の今ごろ、サラはイサクを産む。」

17 亞伯蘭九十九歲那年，耶和華向他顯現說：「我是全能的上帝。你要遵行我的旨意，做純全無過的人。 2 我要與你立約，我要使你子孫極其興旺。」 3 亞伯蘭就俯伏在地，上帝又對他說： 4 「我要與你立約，你必成為許多民族的始祖。 5 以後你的名字不再叫亞伯蘭，要改為亞伯拉罕[a]，因為我要立你為萬族之父。 6 我要使你的子孫極其興旺，許多民族和君王必從你而出。 7 我要和你並你的子子孫孫立永恆的約，我要做你和你子孫的上帝。 8 我要把你現在寄居的整個迦南賜給你和你的後裔永遠作產業，我也必做他們的上帝。」
9 上帝又對亞伯拉罕說：「你和你的子孫世世代代都要遵守我的約。 10 你們所有的男子都要受割禮，這是我與你和你的子孫所立的約，你們要遵守。 11 你們都要割包皮，作為我與你們立約的記號。 12 你們世世代代的男子在出生後的第八日都要接受割禮。在你家裡出生的和用錢從外族人那裡買來的奴僕也要受割禮。 13 不論是在你家裡生的，還是你用錢買來的男子，都要接受割禮，這樣你們的肉體上就有我永恆之約的記號。 14 任何沒有接受割禮的男子，要將他從民中剷除，因為他違背了我的約。」

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old,(A) the Lord appeared to him(B) and said, “I am God Almighty[a];(C) walk before me faithfully and be blameless.(D) 2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you(E) and will greatly increase your numbers.”(F)
3 Abram fell facedown,(G) and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you:(H) You will be the father of many nations.(I) 5 No longer will you be called Abram[b]; your name will be Abraham,[c](J) for I have made you a father of many nations.(K) 6 I will make you very fruitful;(L) I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.(M) 7 I will establish my covenant(N) as an everlasting covenant(O) between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God(P) and the God of your descendants after you.(Q) 8 The whole land of Canaan,(R) where you now reside as a foreigner,(S) I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you;(T) and I will be their God.(U)”
9 Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant,(V) you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.(W) 10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.(X) 11 You are to undergo circumcision,(Y) and it will be the sign of the covenant(Z) between me and you. 12 For the generations to come(AA) every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised,(AB) including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner—those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.(AC) My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.(AD) 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised(AE) in the flesh, will be cut off from his people;(AF) he has broken my covenant.(AG)”
15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai(AH) your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.(AI) 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her.(AJ) I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations;(AK) kings of peoples will come from her.”
17 Abraham fell facedown;(AL) he laughed(AM) and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old?(AN) Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?”(AO) 18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael(AP) might live under your blessing!”(AQ)
19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son,(AR) and you will call him Isaac.[d](AS) I will establish my covenant with him(AT) as an everlasting covenant(AU) for his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers.(AV) He will be the father of twelve rulers,(AW) and I will make him into a great nation.(AX) 21 But my covenant(AY) I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you(AZ) by this time next year.”(BA) 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.(BB)
23 On that very day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household(BC) or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.(BD) 24 Abraham was ninety-nine years old(BE) when he was circumcised,(BF) 25 and his son Ishmael(BG) was thirteen; 26 Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day. 27 And every male in Abraham’s household(BH), including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.

God's Promise to Abraham
17 When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him again and said, “I am God All-Powerful. If you obey me and always do right, 2 I will keep my solemn promise to you and give you more descendants than can be counted.” 3 Abram bowed with his face to the ground, and God said:
4-5 (A) I promise that you will be the father of many nations. So now I'm changing your name from Abram to Abraham.[a] 6 I will give you a lot of descendants, and they will become great nations. Some of them will even be kings.
7 (B) I will always keep the promise I have made to you and your descendants, because I am your God and their God. 8 (C) I will give you and them the land in which you are now a foreigner. I will give the whole land of Canaan to your family forever, and I will be their God.
9 Abraham, you and all future members of your family must promise to obey me. 10-11 (D) As the sign that you are keeping this promise, you must circumcise every man and boy in your family. 12-13 From now on, your family must circumcise every baby boy when he is eight days old. You must even circumcise any man or boy you have as a slave, both those born in your homes and those you buy from foreigners. This will be a sign that my promise to you will last forever. 14 Any man who isn't circumcised hasn't kept his part of the promise and cannot be one of my people.
15 Abraham, from now on your wife's name will be Sarah instead of Sarai. 16 I will bless her, and you will have a son by her. She will become the mother of nations, and some of her descendants will even be kings.
17 Abraham bowed with his face to the ground and thought, “I am almost 100 years old. How can I become a father? And Sarah is 90. How can she have a child?” So he started laughing. 18 Then he asked God, “Why not let Ishmael[b] inherit what you have promised me?”
19 But God answered:
No! You and Sarah will have a son. His name will be Isaac,[c] and I will make an everlasting promise to him and his descendants.
20 However, I have heard what you asked me to do for Ishmael, and so I will also bless him with many descendants. He will be the father of twelve princes, and I will make his family a great nation. 21 But your son Isaac will be born about this time next year, and the promise I am making to you and your family will be for him and his descendants forever.
22 God finished speaking to Abraham and then left.
23-27 On that same day Abraham obeyed God by circumcising Ishmael. Abraham was also circumcised, and so were all the other men and boys in his household, including his servants and slaves. He was 99 years old at the time, and his son Ishmael was 13.
