遵行誡命蒙祝福
26 「你們不可為自己製造偶像，不可豎立神像和神柱，也不可在你們境內安放祭拜用的石像。我是你們的上帝耶和華。 2 你們要守我的安息日，敬畏我的聖所。我是耶和華。 3 如果你們遵行我的律例，持守我的誡命， 4 我就按時降雨給你們，使土地長出莊稼、果樹結出果實。 5 你們要打糧食打到摘葡萄的時候，摘葡萄摘到播種的時候。你們必豐衣足食，安然居住。
6 「我要使你們得享太平，安枕無憂。我要除掉你們境內的猛獸，也要使你們免遭刀劍之災。 7 你們將追趕仇敵，使他們倒在你們刀下。 8 你們五人要追趕一百人，一百人要追趕一萬人，他們必死在你們刀下。 9 我要眷顧你們，使你們生養眾多，也要堅守與你們所立的約。 10 你們存糧很多，甚至要搬出陳糧來儲存新糧。 11 我要住在你們中間，我必不厭棄你們。 12 我要在你們中間往來。我要做你們的上帝，你們要做我的子民。 13 我是你們的上帝耶和華。我曾帶領你們離開埃及，使你們不再做埃及人的奴隸。我打碎了壓在你們身上的重軛，使你們能昂首挺胸、揚眉吐氣。
違背誡命受懲罰
14 「如果你們不聽從我，不遵行我的這一切誡命； 15 如果你們拒絕遵守我的律例，厭棄我的典章，不聽從我的命令，破壞我與你們所立的約， 16 我要懲罰你們，使你們陷入恐慌、患癆病和熱症，使你們眼睛昏花、心力衰竭。你們撒種卻一無所獲，因為敵人要吃盡你們所種的。 17 我要嚴懲你們，使你們敗在敵人手下；你們要被那些恨你們的人統治，即使沒有人追趕，你們也要逃命。
18 「如果你們受過這些懲罰，仍然不知悔改，我要把比先前嚴厲七倍的懲罰加在你們身上。 19 我要重挫你們的傲氣，使你們頭上的天如鐵，腳下的地如銅。 20 你們勞作也是徒然，因為你們的土地必不長莊稼，果樹也不結果實。
21 「如果你們仍然與我作對，不肯聽從我，我要把比先前嚴重七倍的災難降在你們身上。 22 我要讓野獸殘害你們的子女，吞噬你們的牲畜，使你們人口銳減，路上杳無人跡。
23 「如果你們還是與我作對， 24 我也要與你們作對，用比先前嚴重七倍的災難擊打你們。 25 因為你們毀約，我要用戰禍報應你們。你們躲進各城的時候，我要在你們中間降下瘟疫，使你們落在敵人手裡。 26 我要斷絕你們的糧源。那時候，十個婦女將用一個烤爐烤餅，按定量分餅給你們，你們吃卻吃不飽。
27 「如果你們仍然不肯聽從我，繼續與我作對， 28 我也要與你們作對，向你們發烈怒，把比先前嚴厲七倍的懲罰加在你們身上。 29 你們要吃自己兒女的肉。 30 我要毀滅你們的邱壇，拆掉你們的香壇，把你們的屍體堆在你們毫無氣息的神像上。我厭惡你們。 31 我要使你們的城邑淪為廢墟，使你們的敬拜場所荒涼，也不再悅納你們的馨香之祭。 32 我要使你們的土地荒廢，連佔據那裡的敵人也為此而震驚。 33 我要把你們驅散到各國，還要拔刀追殺你們。你們的土地將荒廢，城邑將淪為廢墟。 34 你們被擄到敵國的時候，你們的土地將荒廢，享受安息。 35 你們住在那裡的時候，沒有在安息年讓土地安息，因此土地在荒廢的日子裡將享受安息。
36 「我要使你們當中的那些倖存者在敵國心驚膽戰，過著風聲鶴唳、惶恐不安的生活。 37 即使無人追趕，他們也將倉皇逃命，互相絆倒，如同躲避刀劍一樣。你們必無力抵擋敵人。 38 你們將葬身列國，死在敵人的土地上。 39 你們當中的倖存者將因自己的罪和祖先的罪而消亡在敵人的土地上。
認罪悔改蒙眷顧
40 「如果他們承認自己和祖先的罪，就是背叛我、與我作對的惡行—— 41 以致我與他們作對，把他們流放到敵國；如果他們頑固[a]的心謙卑下來，甘願接受刑罰， 42 我便履行我與亞伯拉罕、以撒和雅各所立的約，眷顧那片土地。 43 土地被他們離棄，荒無人煙，得享安息。他們卻要因拒絕遵守我的典章、厭棄我的律例而飽受懲罰。 44 然而，他們流落敵國的時候，我不會棄絕他們，不會因厭惡而毀滅他們，也不會違背我與他們所立的約。我是他們的上帝耶和華。 45 我必為他們的緣故履行我與他們祖先所立的約。我曾在列國面前帶領他們的祖先離開埃及，為要做他們的上帝。我是耶和華。」
46 以上是耶和華藉摩西在西奈山上頒佈給以色列人的律例、典章和法度。

Bendiciones de la obediencia
26 »No se hagan ídolos, ni levanten imágenes ni piedras sagradas. No coloquen en su territorio piedras esculpidas, ni se postren ante ellas. Yo soy el Señor su Dios.
2 »Observen mis sábados y muestren reverencia por mi santuario. Yo soy el Señor.
3 »Si se conducen según mis estatutos y obedecen fielmente mis mandamientos, 4 yo enviaré lluvia a su tiempo, y la tierra y los árboles del campo darán sus frutos; 5 la trilla durará hasta la vendimia, y la vendimia durará hasta la siembra. Comerán hasta saciarse y vivirán seguros en su tierra.
6 »Yo traeré paz al país y ustedes podrán dormir sin ningún temor. Quitaré de la tierra las bestias salvajes y no habrá guerra en su territorio. 7 Perseguirán a sus enemigos y ante ustedes caerán a filo de espada. 8 Cinco de ustedes perseguirán a cien, y cien de ustedes perseguirán a diez mil, y ante ustedes sus enemigos caerán a filo de espada.
9 »Yo les mostraré mi favor. Yo los haré fecundos. Los multiplicaré y mantendré mi pacto con ustedes. 10 Todavía estarán comiendo de la cosecha del año anterior cuando tendrán que sacarla para dar lugar a la nueva. 11 Estableceré mi morada en medio de ustedes y no los aborreceré. 12 Caminaré entre ustedes. Yo seré su Dios y ustedes serán mi pueblo. 13 Yo soy el Señor su Dios que los saqué de Egipto para que dejaran de ser esclavos. Yo rompí las varas de su yugo y los hice caminar con la cabeza erguida.
Maldiciones de la desobediencia
14 »Si ustedes no me obedecen ni ponen por obra todos estos mandamientos, 15 sino que desprecian mis estatutos, aborrecen mis leyes y dejan de poner por obra todos mis mandamientos, rompiendo así mi pacto, 16 entonces yo mismo los castigaré con un terror repentino, con enfermedades y con fiebre que los debilitarán, les harán perder la vista y acabarán con su vida. En vano sembrarán su semilla, porque se la comerán sus enemigos. 17 Yo les negaré mi favor y sus adversarios los derrotarán. Sus enemigos los dominarán y ustedes huirán sin que nadie los persiga.
18 »Si después de todo esto siguen sin obedecerme, siete veces los castigaré por sus pecados. 19 Yo quebrantaré su orgullo y terquedad. Endureceré el cielo como el hierro y la tierra como el bronce, 20 por lo que en vano agotarán sus fuerzas, y ni el suelo ni los árboles del campo darán sus frutos.
21 »Si a pesar de esto siguen oponiéndose a mí y se niegan a obedecerme, siete veces los castigaré por sus pecados. 22 Lanzaré sobre ustedes fieras salvajes que arrebatarán sus hijos y destruirán su ganado. De tal manera los diezmarán que sus caminos quedarán desiertos.
23 »Si a pesar de todo esto no aceptan mi disciplina, sino que continúan oponiéndose a mí, 24 yo también seguiré oponiéndome a ustedes. Yo mismo los heriré siete veces por sus pecados. 25 Dejaré caer sobre ustedes la espada de la venganza prescrita en el pacto. Cuando se retiren a sus ciudades, les enviaré una plaga y caerán en poder del enemigo. 26 Cuando yo destruya la provisión de pan, diez mujeres hornearán para ustedes pan en un solo horno. Y lo distribuirán racionado, de tal manera que comerán, pero no se saciarán.
27 »Si a pesar de esto todavía no me obedecen, sino que continúan oponiéndose a mí, 28 entonces yo también en mi ira me opondré a ustedes. Siete veces los castigaré por sus pecados, 29 y tendrán que comerse la carne de sus hijos y de sus hijas. 30 Destruiré sus altares paganos, demoleré sus altares de incienso y amontonaré sus cadáveres sobre las figuras sin vida de sus ídolos. Volcaré mi odio sobre ustedes; 31 convertiré en ruinas sus ciudades y asolaré sus santuarios. No me complaceré más en el aroma de sus ofrendas, que me era grato. 32 De tal manera asolaré al país que sus enemigos que vengan a ocuparlo quedarán atónitos. 33 Los dispersaré entre las naciones: desenvainaré la espada, los perseguiré hasta dejar desolada su tierra y en ruinas sus ciudades. 34 Entonces la tierra disfrutará de sus años sabáticos todo el tiempo que permanezca desolada, mientras ustedes vivan en el país de sus enemigos. Así la tierra descansará y disfrutará de sus sábados. 35 Mientras la tierra esté desolada, tendrá el descanso que no tuvo durante los años sabáticos en que ustedes la habitaron.
36 »En cuanto a los que sobrevivan, tan profundo será el temor que les infundiré en tierra de sus enemigos, que hasta el susurro de una hoja movida por el viento los pondrá en fuga. Correrán como quien huye de la espada y caerán sin que nadie los persiga. 37 Como si huyeran de la espada, tropezarán unos con otros sin que nadie los persiga y no podrán hacerles frente a sus enemigos. 38 Perecerán en medio de las naciones; el país de sus enemigos los devorará. 39 Aquellos de ustedes que sobrevivan serán abatidos en país enemigo, porque a sus pecados se añadirá el de sus antepasados.
40 »Pero si confiesan su maldad y la de sus antepasados —su traición y constante oposición contra mí, 41 que me obligaron a enviarlos al país de sus enemigos— y abandonan su terquedad,[a] se humillan y reconocen su pecado, 42 entonces me acordaré de mi pacto con Jacob, Isaac y Abraham; también me acordaré de la tierra. 43 Al abandonar ellos la tierra, esta disfrutará de sus sábados mientras permanezca deshabitada. Pero tendrán que reconocer sus pecados, por cuanto rechazaron mis leyes y aborrecieron mis estatutos. 44 A pesar de todo y, aunque estén en la tierra de sus enemigos, no los rechazaré ni los aborreceré hasta el punto de exterminarlos; tampoco romperé mi pacto con ellos. Yo soy el Señor su Dios. 45 Antes recordaré en su favor el pacto que hice con sus antepasados, a quienes, a la vista de las naciones, saqué de Egipto para ser su Dios. Yo soy el Señor».
46 Estos son los estatutos, ordenanzas y leyes que, por medio de Moisés, estableció el Señor en el monte Sinaí entre él y los israelitas.

Reward for Obedience
26 “‘Do not make idols(A) or set up an image(B) or a sacred stone(C) for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone(D) in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.
2 “‘Observe my Sabbaths(E) and have reverence for my sanctuary.(F) I am the Lord.
3 “‘If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey(G) my commands, 4 I will send you rain(H) in its season,(I) and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit.(J) 5 Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want(K) and live in safety in your land.(L)
6 “‘I will grant peace in the land,(M) and you will lie down(N) and no one will make you afraid.(O) I will remove wild beasts(P) from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. 7 You will pursue your enemies,(Q) and they will fall by the sword before you. 8 Five(R) of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you.(S)
9 “‘I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers,(T) and I will keep my covenant(U) with you. 10 You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new.(V) 11 I will put my dwelling place[a](W) among you, and I will not abhor you.(X) 12 I will walk(Y) among you and be your God,(Z) and you will be my people.(AA) 13 I am the Lord your God,(AB) who brought you out of Egypt(AC) so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke(AD) and enabled you to walk with heads held high.
Punishment for Disobedience
14 “‘But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands,(AE) 15 and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws(AF) and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant,(AG) 16 then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever(AH) that will destroy your sight and sap your strength.(AI) You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.(AJ) 17 I will set my face(AK) against you so that you will be defeated(AL) by your enemies;(AM) those who hate you will rule over you,(AN) and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you.(AO)
18 “‘If after all this you will not listen to me,(AP) I will punish(AQ) you for your sins seven times over.(AR) 19 I will break down your stubborn pride(AS) and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze.(AT) 20 Your strength will be spent in vain,(AU) because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit.(AV)
21 “‘If you remain hostile(AW) toward me and refuse to listen to me, I will multiply your afflictions seven times over,(AX) as your sins deserve. 22 I will send wild animals(AY) against you, and they will rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and make you so few(AZ) in number that your roads will be deserted.(BA)
23 “‘If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction(BB) but continue to be hostile toward me, 24 I myself will be hostile(BC) toward you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over. 25 And I will bring the sword(BD) on you to avenge(BE) the breaking of the covenant. When you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague(BF) among you, and you will be given into enemy hands. 26 When I cut off your supply of bread,(BG) ten women will be able to bake your bread in one oven, and they will dole out the bread by weight. You will eat, but you will not be satisfied.
27 “‘If in spite of this you still do not listen to me(BH) but continue to be hostile toward me, 28 then in my anger(BI) I will be hostile(BJ) toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over.(BK) 29 You will eat(BL) the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters.(BM) 30 I will destroy your high places,(BN) cut down your incense altars(BO) and pile your dead bodies[b] on the lifeless forms of your idols,(BP) and I will abhor(BQ) you. 31 I will turn your cities into ruins(BR) and lay waste(BS) your sanctuaries,(BT) and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings.(BU) 32 I myself will lay waste the land,(BV) so that your enemies who live there will be appalled.(BW) 33 I will scatter(BX) you among the nations(BY) and will draw out my sword(BZ) and pursue you. Your land will be laid waste,(CA) and your cities will lie in ruins.(CB) 34 Then the land will enjoy its sabbath years all the time that it lies desolate(CC) and you are in the country of your enemies;(CD) then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. 35 All the time that it lies desolate, the land will have the rest(CE) it did not have during the sabbaths you lived in it.
36 “‘As for those of you who are left, I will make their hearts so fearful in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a windblown leaf(CF) will put them to flight.(CG) They will run as though fleeing from the sword, and they will fall, even though no one is pursuing them.(CH) 37 They will stumble over one another(CI) as though fleeing from the sword, even though no one is pursuing them. So you will not be able to stand before your enemies.(CJ) 38 You will perish(CK) among the nations; the land of your enemies will devour you.(CL) 39 Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’(CM) sins they will waste away.(CN)
40 “‘But if they will confess(CO) their sins(CP) and the sins of their ancestors(CQ)—their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me, 41 which made me hostile(CR) toward them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies—then when their uncircumcised hearts(CS) are humbled(CT) and they pay(CU) for their sin, 42 I will remember my covenant with Jacob(CV) and my covenant with Isaac(CW) and my covenant with Abraham,(CX) and I will remember the land. 43 For the land will be deserted(CY) by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected(CZ) my laws and abhorred my decrees.(DA) 44 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies,(DB) I will not reject them or abhor(DC) them so as to destroy them completely,(DD) breaking my covenant(DE) with them. I am the Lord their God. 45 But for their sake I will remember(DF) the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of Egypt(DG) in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.’”
46 These are the decrees, the laws and the regulations that the Lord established at Mount Sinai(DH) between himself and the Israelites through Moses.(DI)

Conclusione
26 «Non vi farete idoli, né vi erigerete immagini scolpite o stele, né permetterete che nel vostro paese vi sia pietra ornata di figure, per prostrarvi davanti ad essa; poiché io sono il Signore vostro Dio. 2 Osserverete i miei sabati e porterete rispetto al mio santuario. Io sono il Signore.
Benedizioni
3 Se seguirete le mie leggi, se osserverete i miei comandi e li metterete in pratica, 4 io vi darò le piogge alla loro stagione, la terra darà prodotti e gli alberi della campagna daranno frutti. 5 La trebbiatura durerà per voi fino alla vendemmia e la vendemmia durerà fino alla semina; avrete cibo a sazietà e abiterete tranquilli il vostro paese.
6 Io stabilirò la pace nel paese; nessuno vi incuterà terrore; vi coricherete e farò sparire dal paese le bestie nocive e la spada non passerà per il vostro paese. 7 Voi inseguirete i vostri nemici ed essi cadranno dinanzi a voi colpiti di spada. 8 Cinque di voi ne inseguiranno cento, cento di voi ne inseguiranno diecimila e i vostri nemici cadranno dinanzi a voi colpiti di spada.
9 Io mi volgerò a voi, vi renderò fecondi e vi moltiplicherò e confermerò la mia alleanza con voi.
10 Voi mangerete del vecchio raccolto, serbato a lungo, e dovrete metter via il raccolto vecchio per far posto al nuovo.
11 Stabilirò la mia dimora in mezzo a voi e io non vi respingerò. 12 Camminerò in mezzo a voi, sarò vostro Dio e voi sarete il mio popolo. 13 Io sono il Signore vostro Dio, che vi ho fatto uscire dal paese d'Egitto; ho spezzato il vostro giogo e vi ho fatto camminare a testa alta.
Maledizioni
14 Ma se non mi ascolterete e se non metterete in pratica tutti questi comandi, 15 se disprezzerete le mie leggi e rigetterete le mie prescrizioni, non mettendo in pratica tutti i miei comandi e infrangendo la mia alleanza, 16 ecco che cosa farò a voi a mia volta: manderò contro di voi il terrore, la consunzione e la febbre, che vi faranno languire gli occhi e vi consumeranno la vita. Seminerete invano il vostro seme: se lo mangeranno i vostri nemici. 17 Volgerò la faccia contro di voi e voi sarete sconfitti dai nemici; quelli che vi odiano vi opprimeranno e vi darete alla fuga, senza che alcuno vi insegua.
18 Se nemmeno dopo questo mi ascolterete, io vi castigherò sette volte di più per i vostri peccati. 19 Spezzerò la vostra forza superba, renderò il vostro cielo come ferro e la vostra terra come rame. 20 Le vostre energie si consumeranno invano, poiché la vostra terra non darà prodotti e gli alberi della campagna non daranno frutti.
21 Se vi opporrete a me e non mi ascolterete, io vi colpirò sette volte di più, secondo i vostri peccati. 22 Manderò contro di voi le bestie selvatiche, che vi rapiranno i figli, stermineranno il vostro bestiame, vi ridurranno a un piccolo numero e le vostre strade diventeranno deserte.
23 Se nonostante questi castighi, non vorrete correggervi per tornare a me, ma vi opporrete a me, anch'io mi opporrò a voi 24 e vi colpirò sette volte di più per i vostri peccati. 25 Manderò contro di voi la spada, vindice della mia alleanza; voi vi raccoglierete nelle vostre città, ma io manderò in mezzo a voi la peste e sarete dati in mano al nemico. 26 Quando io avrò spezzato le riserve del pane, dieci donne faranno cuocere il vostro pane in uno stesso forno, ve lo riporteranno a peso e mangerete, ma non vi sazierete.
27 Se, nonostante tutto questo, non vorrete darmi ascolto, ma vi opporrete a me, 28 anch'io mi opporrò a voi con furore e vi castigherò sette volte di più per i vostri peccati. 29 Mangerete perfino la carne dei vostri figli e mangerete la carne delle vostre figlie. 30 Devasterò le vostre alture di culto, distruggerò i vostri altari per l'incenso, butterò i vostri cadaveri sui cadaveri dei vostri idoli e io vi avrò in abominio. 31 Ridurrò le vostre città a deserti, devasterò i vostri santuari e non aspirerò più il profumo dei vostri incensi. 32 Devasterò io stesso il vostro paese e i vostri nemici, che vi prenderanno dimora, ne saranno stupefatti. 33 Quanto a voi, vi disperderò fra le nazioni e vi inseguirò con la spada sguainata; il vostro paese sarà desolato e le vostre città saranno deserte.
34 Allora la terra godrà i suoi sabati per tutto il tempo in cui rimarrà desolata e voi sarete nel paese dei vostri nemici; allora la terra si riposerà e si compenserà dei suoi sabati. 35 Finché rimarrà desolata, avrà il riposo che non le fu concesso da voi con i sabati, quando l'abitavate.
36 A quelli che fra di voi saranno superstiti infonderò nel cuore costernazione, nel paese dei loro nemici: il fruscìo di una foglia agitata li metterà in fuga; fuggiranno come si fugge di fronte alla spada e cadranno senza che alcuno li insegua. 37 Precipiteranno uno sopra l'altro come di fronte alla spada, senza che alcuno li insegua. Non potrete resistere dinanzi ai vostri nemici. 38 Perirete fra le nazioni: il paese dei vostri nemici vi divorerà.
39 Quelli che tra di voi saranno superstiti nei paesi dei loro nemici, si consumeranno a causa delle proprie iniquità; anche a causa delle iniquità dei loro padri periranno. 40 Dovranno confessare la loro iniquità e l'iniquità dei loro padri: per essere stati infedeli nei miei riguardi ed essersi opposti a me; 41 peccati per i quali anche io mi sono opposto a loro e li ho deportati nel paese dei loro nemici. Allora il loro cuore non circonciso si umilierà e allora sconteranno la loro colpa. 42 Io mi ricorderò della mia alleanza con Giacobbe, dell'alleanza con Isacco e dell'alleanza con Abramo e mi ricorderò del paese. 43 Quando dunque il paese sarà abbandonato da loro e godrà i suoi sabati, mentre rimarrà deserto, senza di loro, essi sconteranno la loro colpa, per avere disprezzato le mie prescrizioni ed essersi stancati delle mie leggi.
44 Nonostante tutto questo, quando saranno nel paese dei loro nemici, io non li rigetterò e non mi stancherò di essi fino al punto d'annientarli del tutto e di rompere la mia alleanza con loro; poiché io sono il Signore loro Dio; 45 ma per loro amore mi ricorderò dell'alleanza con i loro antenati, che ho fatto uscire dal paese d'Egitto davanti alle nazioni, per essere il loro Dio. Blessings for Obedience(A)
26 (B)The Lord said, “Do not make idols or set up statues, stone pillars, or carved stones to worship. I am the Lord your God. 2 Keep the religious festivals and honor the place where I am worshiped. I am the Lord.
3 (C)“If you live according to my laws and obey my commands, 4 I will send you rain at the right time, so that the land will produce crops and the trees will bear fruit. 5 Your crops will be so plentiful that you will still be harvesting grain when it is time to pick grapes, and you will still be picking grapes when it is time to plant grain. You will have all that you want to eat, and you can live in safety in your land.
6 “I will give you peace in your land, and you can sleep without being afraid of anyone. I will get rid of the dangerous animals in the land, and there will be no more war there. 7 You will be victorious over your enemies; 8 five of you will be able to defeat a hundred, and a hundred will be able to defeat ten thousand. 9 I will bless you and give you many children; I will keep my part of the covenant that I made with you. 10 Your harvests will be so plentiful that they will last for a year, and even then you will have to throw away what is left of the old harvest to make room for the new. 11 I will live among you in my sacred Tent, and I will never turn away from you. 12 (D)I will be with you; I will be your God, and you will be my people. 13 I, the Lord your God, brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves. I broke the power that held you down and I let you walk with your head held high.”
Punishment for Disobedience(E)
14 (F)The Lord said, “If you will not obey my commands, you will be punished. 15 If you refuse to obey my laws and commands and break the covenant I have made with you, 16 I will punish you. I will bring disaster on you—incurable diseases and fevers that will make you blind and cause your life to waste away. You will plant your crops, but it will do you no good, because your enemies will conquer you and eat what you have grown. 17 I will turn against you, so that you will be defeated, and those who hate you will rule over you; you will be so terrified that you will run when no one is chasing you.
18 “If even after all of this you still do not obey me, I will increase your punishment seven times. 19 I will break your stubborn pride; there will be no rain, and your land will be dry and as hard as iron. 20 All your hard work will do you no good, because your land will not produce crops and the trees will not bear fruit.
21 “If you still continue to resist me and refuse to obey me, I will again increase your punishment seven times. 22 I will send dangerous animals among you, and they will kill your children, destroy your livestock, and leave so few of you that your roads will be deserted.
23 “If after all of this punishment you still do not listen to me, but continue to defy me, 24 then I will turn on you and punish you seven times harder than before. 25 I will bring war on you to punish you for breaking our covenant, and if you gather in your cities for safety, I will send incurable diseases among you, and you will be forced to surrender to your enemies. 26 I will cut off your food supply, so that ten women will need only one oven to bake all the bread they have. They will ration it out, and when you have eaten it all, you will still be hungry.
27 “If after all of this you still continue to defy me and refuse to obey me, 28 then in my anger I will turn on you and again make your punishment seven times worse than before. 29 Your hunger will be so great that you will eat your own children. 30 I will destroy your places of worship on the hills, tear down your incense altars, and throw your dead bodies on your fallen idols. In utter disgust 31 I will turn your cities into ruins, destroy your places of worship, and refuse to accept your sacrifices. 32 I will destroy your land so completely that the enemies who occupy it will be shocked at the destruction. 33 I will bring war on you and scatter you in foreign lands. Your land will be deserted, and your cities left in ruins. 34-35 Then the land will enjoy the years of complete rest that you would not give it; it will lie abandoned and get its rest while you are in exile in the land of your enemies.
36 “I will make those of you who are in exile so terrified that the sound of a leaf blowing in the wind will make you run. You will run as if you were being pursued in battle, and you will fall when there is no enemy near you. 37 You will stumble over one another when no one is chasing you, and you will be unable to fight against any enemy. 38 You will die in exile, swallowed up by the land of your enemies. 39 The few of you who survive in the land of your enemies will waste away because of your own sin and the sin of your ancestors.
40 “But your descendants will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors, who resisted me and rebelled against me, 41 and caused me to turn against them and send them into exile in the land of their enemies. At last, when your descendants are humbled and they have paid the penalty for their sin and rebellion, 42 (G)I will remember my covenant with Jacob and with Isaac and with Abraham, and I will renew my promise to give my people the land. 43 First, however, the land must be rid of its people, so that it can enjoy its complete rest, and they must pay the full penalty for having rejected my laws and my commands. 44 But even then, when they are still in the land of their enemies, I will not completely abandon them or destroy them. That would put an end to my covenant with them, and I am the Lord their God. 45 I will renew the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I showed all the nations my power by bringing my people out of Egypt, in order that I, the Lord, might be their God.”
46 All these are the laws and commands that the Lord gave to Moses on Mount Sinai for the people of Israel.
