50 约瑟伏在父亲身上痛哭，亲吻他， 2 然后吩咐医生用香料保存父亲的遗体。医生遵命而行， 3 按照常例花了四十天处理尸体。埃及人为他哀悼七十天。
4 哀悼的日子完了，约瑟对法老宫中的人说：“如果你们恩待我， 5 请告诉法老，我父亲死前要我起誓把他葬在迦南他自己预备好的坟地。请准许我到迦南去安葬我父亲，我办完丧事就回来。” 6 法老说：“去按照你的誓言埋葬你父亲吧。” 7 于是，约瑟启程去埋葬他的父亲，随行的有法老所有的臣仆和埃及所有的达官贵人， 8 以及约瑟全家、他的众弟兄和雅各的家眷，只有他们的孩子和牛羊仍然留在歌珊。 9 随行的还有大队车辆和兵马，人数众多。 10 他们来到约旦河附近的亚达麦场，在那里痛哭哀悼。约瑟为父亲守丧七天。 11 迦南人看见他们在亚达麦场痛哭，就说：“埃及人在痛哭哀悼。”因此，约旦河附近的那个地方叫亚伯·麦西[a]。 12 以色列的儿子们遵照父亲的遗言， 13 把父亲的遗体带回迦南，安葬在幔利附近、麦比拉田间的洞里。洞和田地都是亚伯拉罕向赫人以弗仑买来作坟地的。 14 葬礼之后，约瑟就跟众弟兄和一切随行的人返回埃及。
上帝的美好旨意
15 约瑟的哥哥们见父亲死了，就说：“约瑟会不会怀恨在心，因我们以前恶待他而报复我们呢？” 16 于是，他们派人去对约瑟说：“你父亲临终时交待这样的话给你， 17 ‘从前你哥哥们恶待你，求你饶恕他们的罪恶和过犯。’我们是你父亲的上帝的仆人，求你饶恕我们的罪恶。”约瑟听见这些话，就哭了。 18 约瑟的哥哥们来见他，俯伏在他面前，说：“我们是你的奴仆。” 19 约瑟对他们说：“你们不要害怕，我岂能代替上帝？ 20 从前你们是要加害于我，但上帝有祂的美意，祂借此保全许多人的性命，正如今日的光景。 21 因此，你们不要害怕，我会照顾你们和你们的儿女。”约瑟好言好语地宽慰他们。
约瑟去世
22 约瑟和他父亲全家住在埃及。约瑟享年一百一十岁。 23 他看到了以法莲的孙子，也曾把玛拿西的儿子玛吉的孩子抱在膝上。 24 一天，约瑟对他的弟兄们说：“我快要死了，但上帝必看顾你们，带你们离开这里，回到祂起誓应许给亚伯拉罕、以撒和雅各的地方。” 25 约瑟要以色列的子孙发誓把他的骸骨带回迦南，又说：“上帝必看顾你们。” 26 约瑟享年一百一十岁。他们把他的遗体用香料保存好，放在棺材里，停放在埃及。

Jacob’s Burial
50 When Jacob died, Joseph hugged his father and cried over him and kissed him. 2 He commanded the doctors who served him to prepare his father’s body. So the doctors prepared Jacob’s body to be buried. 3 It took the doctors 40 days to prepare his body. This was the usual time it took. And the Egyptians had a time of sorrow for Jacob. It lasted 70 days.
4 When this time of sorrow had ended, Joseph spoke to the king’s officers. He said, “If you think well of me, please tell this to the king: 5 ‘When my father was near death, I made a promise to him. I promised I would bury him in a cave in the land of Canaan. This is a burial place that he cut out for himself. So please let me go and bury my father. Then I will return.’”
6 The king answered, “Keep your promise. Go and bury your father.”
7 So Joseph went to bury his father. All the king’s officers, the elders of his court and all the elders of Egypt went with Joseph. 8 Everyone who lived with Joseph and his brothers went with him. And everyone who lived with his father also went. They left only their children, their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen. 9 Men in chariots and on horses also went with Joseph. It was a very large group.
10 They went to the threshing floor of Atad, east of the Jordan River. There they cried loudly and bitterly for Jacob, also called Israel. Joseph’s time of sorrow continued for seven days. 11 The people that lived in Canaan saw the sadness at the threshing floor of Atad. They said, “Those Egyptians are showing great sorrow!” So now that place is named Sorrow of the Egyptians.
12 So Jacob’s sons did what their father commanded. 13 They carried his body to the land of Canaan. They buried it in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre. Abraham had bought this cave and field from Ephron the Hittite. He bought the cave to use as a burial place. 14 After Joseph buried his father, he returned to Egypt. His brothers and everyone who had gone with him to bury his father also returned.
The Brothers Fear Joseph
15 After Jacob died, Joseph’s brothers said, “What if Joseph is still angry with us? We did many wrong things to him. What if he plans to pay us back?” 16 So they sent a message to Joseph. It said, “Your father gave this command before he died. 17 He said to us, ‘You have done wrong. You have sinned and done evil to Joseph. Tell Joseph to forgive you, his brothers.’ So now, Joseph, we beg you to forgive our wrong. We are the servants of the God of your father.” When Joseph received the message, he cried.
18 And his brothers went to him and bowed low before him. They said, “We are your slaves.”
19 Then Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Can I do what only God can do? 20 You meant to hurt me. But God turned your evil into good. It was to save the lives of many people. And it is being done. 21 So don’t be afraid. I will take care of you and your children.” So Joseph comforted his brothers and spoke kind words to them.
22 Joseph continued to live in Egypt with all his father’s family. He died when he was 110 years old. 23 During Joseph’s life Ephraim had children and grandchildren. And Joseph’s son Manasseh had a son named Makir. Joseph accepted Makir’s children as his own.
The Death of Joseph
24 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die. But God will take care of you. He will lead you out of this land. He will lead you to the land he promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” 25 Then Joseph had the sons of Israel make a promise. He said, “Promise me that you will carry my bones with you out of Egypt.”
26 Joseph died when he was 110 years old. Doctors prepared his body for burial. Then they put him in a coffin in Egypt.

50 Jozef wierp zich op het lichaam van zijn vader, kuste hem en huilde. 2 Daarna liet hij zijn artsen het lichaam balsemen. 3 Deze balseming duurde veertig dagen, gevolgd door een nationale rouw van zeventig dagen. 4 Na die rouwtijd wendde Jozef zich tot de vertrouwelingen van de farao en vroeg hun namens hem met de farao te spreken. 5 ‘Zeg zijne majesteit dat Jozefs vader Jozef heeft laten zweren dat hij zijn lichaam naar Kanaän zou brengen om het daar te begraven, u kunt hem verzekeren dat ik daarna onmiddellijk terugkom.’ 6 De farao stemde toe. ‘Ga uw vader maar begraven zoals u hebt beloofd,’ zei hij.
7,8 Zo vertrok Jozef en met hem een groot aantal Egyptische hoogwaardigheidsbekleders en de hele familie. Alleen de kleine kinderen en de schapen en runderen bleven in het land Gosen achter. 9 Het was een grote groep rijtuigen en ruiters die Jozef begeleidde. 10 Toen de stoet bij Goren-Haätad (Dorsvloer van Doornen) aan de overzijde van de Jordaan aankwam, hielden ze daar een indrukwekkende rouwplechtigheid. Zeven dagen lang rouwden allen om Jozefs vader. 11 De plaatselijke bewoners, de Kanaänieten, gaven die plaats zelfs een andere naam. Voortaan heette hij Abel-Misraïm (Egyptische rouwplechtigheid), want zij zeiden: ‘Dit is een plaats van zware rouw voor de Egyptenaren.’
12,13 Zo voerden Israëls zonen zijn laatste wil uit en brachten zijn lichaam terug naar Kanaän. Zij begroeven hem in de grot van Machpela, vlakbij Mamre. 14 Daarna ging Jozef terug naar Egypte met zijn broers en allen die hem hadden begeleid naar de begrafenis.
15 Maar nu hun vader dood was, werden de broers bang. 16 ‘Nu zal Jozef ons alles betaald zetten wat wij hem hebben aangedaan,’ meenden zij. Daarom stuurden zij hem de boodschap: ‘Voor hij stierf, zei vader ons 17 dat wij jou dit verzoek moesten overbrengen: “Vergeef je broers wat zij je hebben aangedaan. Wil hun als dienaren van de God van je vader vergeven”.’ Toen Jozef dit hoorde, kromp hij ineen en huilde. 18 Zijn broers kwamen naar hem toe, vielen voor hem neer en zeiden: ‘Wij zijn je slaven.’ 19 Maar Jozef gaf als antwoord: ‘Jullie hoeven toch niet bang voor mij te zijn. Ben ik soms God dat ik jullie kan veroordelen en bestraffen? 20 Ik geloof dat God jullie slechte bedoelingen heeft omgebogen tot iets goeds, want Hij heeft mij deze hoge positie gegeven, zodat ik de levens van vele mensen kon redden. 21 Nee, wees maar niet bang. Ik zal voor jullie en jullie gezinnen zorgen.’ Zo stelde hij zijn broers gerust en gaf hun weer moed.
22 Jozef en zijn broers bleven in Egypte wonen. Jozef was honderdtien jaar oud toen hij stierf. 23 Hij leefde lang genoeg om de kinderen en kleinkinderen van zijn zoon Efraïm en de kinderen van Manasses zoon Machir geboren te zien worden. Zij speelden aan zijn voeten. 24 ‘Ik zal spoedig sterven,’ zei Jozef tegen zijn broers, ‘maar God zal zeker komen en jullie uit het land Egypte terugbrengen naar het land dat Hij heeft beloofd aan de nakomelingen van Abraham, Isaak en Jakob.’ 25 Toen liet Jozef zijn broers zweren dat zij zijn lichaam met zich zouden meenemen bij de terugkeer naar Kanaän. 26 Zo stierf Jozef op de leeftijd van honderdtien jaar. Zij balsemden zijn lichaam en legden het in een kist in Egypte.
