31 雅各听见拉班的儿子们说：“雅各夺去了我们父亲的一切！他的财富都是从我们父亲那里得来的。” 2 雅各发觉拉班对他的态度不如从前了。 3 这时，耶和华对雅各说：“回到你的家乡和亲族那里吧！我必与你同在。” 4 于是，雅各就派人把拉结和利亚叫到放羊的地方， 5 对她们说：“我感到你们父亲对我不如从前了，但我父亲的上帝常与我同在。 6 你们知道我是怎样尽心尽力地替你们父亲工作， 7 他却欺骗我，把我的工酬更改了十次。然而，上帝不让他苦待我。 8 如果他说把有斑点的羊给我当酬劳，羊群生的就都是有斑点的；如果他说把有条纹的给我，羊群生的就都是有条纹的。 9 上帝就这样把你们父亲的牲畜夺过来给了我。
10 “在羊群交配的季节，我梦见所有和母羊交配的公羊都是有条纹或有斑点的。 11 在梦中，上帝的天使叫我，我说，‘仆人在。’ 12 他说，‘拉班对你的所作所为，我都看见了。现在你留心看看，与母羊交配的公羊都是有条纹或有斑点的。 13 我就是你在伯特利遇见的上帝。你在那里用油浇过柱子，向我许过愿。现在，你要动身离开这里，回到你的家乡。’”
14 拉结和利亚说：“父亲的家产没有我们的份儿， 15 我们早就被当作外人了，他卖了我们，把我们的身价全部吞了。 16 上帝从我们父亲那里夺过来的一切财产，本来就属于我们和我们的儿女。现在你只管照上帝的吩咐做吧！”

拉班追赶雅各
22 到了第三天，拉班才知道雅各逃走了。 23 于是，他带着族人去追赶，追了七天，在基列山区追上了雅各。 24 当天晚上，上帝在梦中对亚兰人拉班说：“你要当心，不可对雅各多说什么。”
25 拉班追上了雅各，那时雅各在基列山搭起帐篷，拉班和他的族人也在那里搭起帐篷。 26 拉班对雅各说：“你做的是什么？你欺瞒我，把我的女儿像战俘一样带走。 27 你为什么要偷偷地溜走？你为什么不告诉我，我好击鼓、弹琴、唱歌欢送你？ 28 你甚至不让我亲吻外孙和女儿，与他们道别，你这样做真愚蠢。 29 我有能力伤害你，但你父亲的上帝昨夜对我说，‘你要小心，不可对雅各多说什么。’ 30 你思家心切，一定要走，但你为什么要偷走我的神像呢？”
31 雅各对拉班说：“我逃跑是因为害怕你会夺回你的女儿。 32 至于你的神像，你在谁身上搜出来，谁就是该死的。你可以当着众弟兄的面察看，如果在我这里有什么物件是你的，你只管拿走。”雅各不知道拉结偷走了神像。
33 拉班进入雅各、利亚和两个婢女的帐篷搜查，却搜不出什么。拉班离开利亚的帐篷进入拉结的帐篷， 34 那时拉结已经把神像藏在骆驼的鞍座里，自己坐在上面。拉班搜遍了整个帐篷什么也找不到。 35 拉结对父亲说：“父亲，请别生气，我有月事在身，不便起来。”结果，拉班搜来搜去找不到神像。
36 雅各发怒，斥责拉班说：“我做错了什么、犯了什么罪以致你对我穷追不舍？ 37 你搜遍我所有的东西，搜到了什么？现在就当着众弟兄的面拿出来，让他们评评理吧！ 38 我在你家这二十年，你的母绵羊、母山羊没有掉过胎，我也没有吃过你公羊的肉。 39 我没有把被野兽撕裂的羊带来给你，而是自己赔上。无论在白昼或黑夜被偷去的，你都要我赔偿。 40 我白天受尽烈日煎熬，晚上饱尝夜露寒霜，不得好睡。 41 这二十年来，我为了你的两个女儿，替你工作了十四年，又用了六年才从你那里得到这些羊，你把我的工钱更改了十次。 42 如果不是我父亲以撒敬畏的上帝，就是亚伯拉罕的上帝与我同在，你肯定会让我两手空空地回家。但上帝看见了我的难处和劳苦，所以在昨夜责备了你。”
雅各和拉班立约
43 拉班回答说：“女儿是我的，这些孩子是我的，羊群也是我的，你的一切都是我的，我又怎会伤害我的女儿和她们的孩子呢？ 44 来吧，你我立约为证。” 45 于是，雅各拿来一块石头，立作柱子， 46 又吩咐族人去收集石头。他们把石头堆成一堆，在旁边吃喝。 47 拉班称那石堆为伊迦尔·撒哈杜他[a]，雅各却称那石堆为迦累得[b]。
48 拉班说：“今日，这石堆是你我之间的凭证。”因此，那地方名叫迦累得， 49 又叫米斯巴，因为拉班说：“我们分手以后，愿上帝亲自鉴察我们。 50 倘若你虐待我的女儿，或在她们以外另娶妻子，即使没人知道，也有上帝在你我之间做见证。”
51 拉班又说：“看我在你我之间立的这石堆和石柱。 52 这石堆和石柱都是凭证，我一定不会越过石堆去害你，你也不可越过石堆和石柱来害我。 53 愿亚伯拉罕和拿鹤的上帝，就是他们父亲的上帝，在你我之间判断是非。”雅各便在他父亲以撒敬畏的上帝面前起誓， 54 又在山上献祭，请众弟兄吃饭。饭后，他们一同在山上过夜。

Jacob’s household leaves Laban
31 Jacob heard that Laban’s sons were saying, “Jacob took everything our father owned and from it he produced all of this wealth.” 2 And Jacob saw that Laban no longer liked him as much as he used to.
3 Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Go back to the land of your ancestors and to your relatives, and I will be with you.”
4 So Jacob sent for Rachel and Leah and summoned them into the field where his flock was. 5 He said to them, “I am aware that your father no longer likes me as much as he used to. But my father’s God has been with me. 6 You know that I’ve worked for your father as hard as I could. 7 But your father cheated me and changed my payment ten times. Yet God didn’t let him harm me. 8 If he said, ‘The speckled ones will be your payment,’ the whole flock gave birth to speckled young. And if he said, ‘The striped ones will be your payment,’ the whole flock gave birth to striped young. 9 God took away your father’s livestock and gave them to me. 10 When the flocks were mating, I looked up and saw in a dream that the male goats that mounted the flock were striped, speckled, and spotted. 11 In the dream, God’s messenger said to me, ‘Jacob!’ and I said, ‘I’m here.’ 12 He said, ‘Look up and watch all the striped, speckled, and spotted male goats mounting the flock. I’ve seen everything that Laban is doing to you. 13 I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a sacred pillar and where you made a solemn promise to me. Now, get up and leave this country and go back to the land of your relatives.’”
14 Rachel and Leah answered him, “Is there any share or inheritance left for us in our father’s household? 15 Doesn’t he think of us as foreigners since he sold us and has even used up the payment he received for us? 16 All of the wealth God took from our father belongs to us and our children. Now, do everything God told you to do.”
17 So Jacob got up, put his sons and wives on the camels, 18 and set out with all of his livestock and all of his possessions that he had acquired[a] in Paddan-aram in order to return to his father Isaac in the land of Canaan. 19 Now, while Laban was out shearing his sheep, Rachel stole the household’s divine images that belonged to her father. 20 Moreover, Jacob deceived Laban the Aramean by not sending word to him that he was leaving. 21 So Jacob and his entire household left. He got up, crossed the river, and set out directly for the mountains of Gilead.
22 Three days later, Laban found out that Jacob had gone, 23 so Laban took his brothers with him, chased Jacob for seven days, and caught up with him in the mountains of Gilead. 24 That night, God appeared to Laban the Aramean in a dream and said, “Be careful and don’t say anything hastily to Jacob one way or the other.”
25 Laban reached Jacob after Jacob had pitched his tent in the mountains. So Laban and his brothers also pitched theirs in the mountains of Gilead. 26 Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done? You have deceived me and taken off with my daughters as if they were prisoners of war. 27 Why did you leave secretly, deceiving me, and not letting me know? I would’ve sent you off with a celebration, with songs and tambourines and harps. 28 You didn’t even let me kiss my sons and my daughters good-bye. Now you’ve acted like a fool, 29 and I have the power to punish you. However, your father’s God told me yesterday, ‘Be careful and don’t say anything hastily to Jacob one way or the other.’ 30 You’ve rushed off now because you missed your father’s household so much, but why did you steal my gods?”
31 Jacob responded to Laban, “I was afraid and convinced myself that you would take your daughters away from me. 32 Whomever you find with your divine images won’t live. Identify whatever I have that is yours, in front of your brothers, and take it.” Jacob didn’t know that Rachel had stolen them. 33 Laban went into Jacob’s tent, Leah’s tent, and her two servants’ tent and didn’t find them.
So he left Leah’s tent and went into Rachel’s. 34 Now Rachel had taken the divine images and put them into the camel’s saddlebag and sat on them. Laban felt around in the whole tent but couldn’t find them. 35 Rachel said to her father, “Sir, don’t be angry with me because I can’t get up for you; I’m having my period.” He searched but couldn’t find the divine images.
36 Jacob was angry and complained to Laban, “What have I done wrong and what’s my crime that you’ve tracked me down like this? 37 You’ve now felt through all of my baggage, and what have you found from your household’s belongings? Put it in front of our relatives, and let them decide between us. 38 For these twenty years I’ve been with you, your female sheep and goats haven’t miscarried, and I haven’t eaten your flock’s rams. 39 When animals were killed, I didn’t bring them to you but took the loss myself. You demanded compensation from me for any animals poached during the day or night. 40 The dry heat consumed me during the day, and the frost at night; I couldn’t sleep. 41 I’ve now spent twenty years in your household. I worked for fourteen years for your two daughters and for six years for your flock, and you changed my pay ten times. 42 If the God of my father—the God of Abraham and the awesome one of Isaac—hadn’t been with me, you’d have no doubt sent me away without anything. God saw my harsh treatment and my hard work and reprimanded you yesterday.”
Jacob and Laban’s treaty
43 Laban responded and told Jacob, “The daughters are my daughters, the children are my children, and the flocks are my flocks. Everything you see is mine. But what can I do now about my daughters and about their sons? 44 Come, let’s make a treaty, you and me, and let something be our witness.”[b]
45 So Jacob took a stone, set it up as a sacred pillar, 46 and said to his relatives, “Gather stones.” So they took stones, made a mound, and ate there near the mound. 47 Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha,[c] but Jacob called it Galeed.[d]
48 Laban said, “This mound is our witness today,” and, therefore, he too named it Galeed. 49 He also named it Mizpah,[e] because he said, “The Lord will observe both of us when we are separated from each other. 50 If you treat my daughters badly and if you marry other women, though we aren’t there, know that God observed our witness.”
51 Laban said to Jacob, “Here is this mound and here is the sacred pillar that I’ve set up for us. 52 This mound and the sacred pillar are witnesses that I won’t travel beyond this mound and that you won’t travel beyond this mound and this pillar to do harm. 53 The God of Abraham and the God of Nahor[f] will keep order between us.” So Jacob gave his word in the name of the awesome one of his father Isaac. 54 Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain, and invited his relatives to a meal. They ate together and spent the night on the mountain. 55 [g] Laban got up early in the morning, kissed his sons and daughters, blessed them, and left to go back to his own place.

4 Envió, pues, Jacob, y llamó a Raquel y a Lea al campo donde estaban sus ovejas,
5 y les dijo: Veo que el semblante de vuestro padre no es para conmigo como era antes; mas el Dios de mi padre ha estado conmigo.
6 Vosotras sabéis que con todas mis fuerzas he servido a vuestro padre;
7 y vuestro padre me ha engañado, y me ha cambiado el salario diez veces; pero Dios no le ha permitido que me hiciese mal.
8 Si él decía así: Los pintados serán tu salario, entonces todas las ovejas parían pintados; y si decía así: Los listados serán tu salario; entonces todas las ovejas parían listados.
9 Así quitó Dios el ganado de vuestro padre, y me lo dio a mí.
10 Y sucedió que al tiempo que las ovejas estaban en celo, alcé yo mis ojos y vi en sueños, y he aquí los machos que cubrían a las hembras eran listados, pintados y abigarrados.

17 Entonces se levantó Jacob, y subió sus hijos y sus mujeres sobre los camellos,
18 y puso en camino todo su ganado, y todo cuanto había adquirido, el ganado de su ganancia que había obtenido en Padán-aram, para volverse a Isaac su padre en la tierra de Canaán.
19 Pero Labán había ido a trasquilar sus ovejas; y Raquel hurtó los ídolos de su padre.
20 Y Jacob actuó a hurtadillas de Labán arameo, no haciéndole saber que se iba.
21 Huyó, pues, con todo lo que tenía; y se levantó y pasó el Eufrates, y se dirigió al monte de Galaad.
22 Y al tercer día fue dicho a Labán que Jacob había huido.
23 Entonces Labán tomó a sus parientes consigo, y fue tras Jacob camino de siete días, y le alcanzó en el monte de Galaad.
24 Y vino Dios a Labán arameo en sueños aquella noche, y le dijo: Guárdate que no hables a Jacob descomedidamente.
25 Alcanzó, pues, Labán a Jacob; y éste había fijado su tienda en el monte; y Labán acampó con sus parientes en el monte de Galaad.
26 Y dijo Labán a Jacob: ¿Qué has hecho, que me engañaste, y has traído a mis hijas como prisioneras de guerra?
27 ¿Por qué te escondiste para huir, y me engañaste, y no me lo hiciste saber para que yo te despidiera con alegría y con cantares, con tamborín y arpa?
28 Pues ni aun me dejaste besar a mis hijos y mis hijas. Ahora, locamente has hecho.
29 Poder hay en mi mano para haceros mal; mas el Dios de tu padre me habló anoche diciendo: Guárdate que no hables a Jacob descomedidamente.
30 Y ya que te ibas, porque tenías deseo de la casa de tu padre, ¿por qué me hurtaste mis dioses?
31 Respondió Jacob y dijo a Labán: Porque tuve miedo; pues pensé que quizá me quitarías por fuerza tus hijas.
32 Aquel en cuyo poder halles tus dioses, no viva; delante de nuestros hermanos reconoce lo que yo tenga tuyo, y llévatelo. Jacob no sabía que Raquel los había hurtado.
33 Entró Labán en la tienda de Jacob, en la tienda de Lea, y en la tienda de las dos siervas, y no los halló; y salió de la tienda de Lea, y entró en la tienda de Raquel.
34 Pero tomó Raquel los ídolos y los puso en una albarda de un camello, y se sentó sobre ellos; y buscó Labán en toda la tienda, y no los halló.
35 Y ella dijo a su padre: No se enoje mi señor, porque no me puedo levantar delante de ti; pues estoy con la costumbre de las mujeres. Y él buscó, pero no halló los ídolos.
36 Entonces Jacob se enojó, y riñó con Labán; y respondió Jacob y dijo a Labán: ¿Qué transgresión es la mía? ¿Cuál es mi pecado, para que con tanto ardor hayas venido en mi persecución?
37 Pues que has buscado en todas mis cosas, ¿qué has hallado de todos los enseres de tu casa? Ponlo aquí delante de mis hermanos y de los tuyos, y juzguen entre nosotros.
38 Estos veinte años he estado contigo; tus ovejas y tus cabras nunca abortaron, ni yo comí carnero de tus ovejas.
39 Nunca te traje lo arrebatado por las fieras: yo pagaba el daño; lo hurtado así de día como de noche, a mí me lo cobrabas.
40 De día me consumía el calor, y de noche la helada, y el sueño huía de mis ojos.
41 Así he estado veinte años en tu casa; catorce años te serví por tus dos hijas, y seis años por tu ganado, y has cambiado mi salario diez veces.
42 Si el Dios de mi padre, Dios de Abraham y temor de Isaac, no estuviera conmigo, de cierto me enviarías ahora con las manos vacías; pero Dios vio mi aflicción y el trabajo de mis manos, y te reprendió anoche.
43 Respondió Labán y dijo a Jacob: Las hijas son hijas mías, y los hijos, hijos míos son, y las ovejas son mis ovejas, y todo lo que tú ves es mío: ¿y qué puedo yo hacer hoy a estas mis hijas, o a sus hijos que ellas han dado a luz?
44 Ven, pues, ahora, y hagamos pacto tú y yo, y sea por testimonio entre nosotros dos.
45 Entonces Jacob tomó una piedra, y la levantó por señal.
46 Y dijo Jacob a sus hermanos: Recoged piedras. Y tomaron piedras e hicieron un majano, y comieron allí sobre aquel majano.
47 Y lo llamó Labán, Jegar Sahaduta; y lo llamó Jacob, Galaad.
48 Porque Labán dijo: Este majano es testigo hoy entre nosotros dos; por eso fue llamado su nombre Galaad;
49 y Mizpá, por cuanto dijo: Atalaye Jehová entre tú y yo, cuando nos apartemos el uno del otro.
50 Si afliges a mis hijas, o si tomas otras mujeres además de mis hijas, nadie está con nosotros; mira, Dios es testigo entre nosotros dos.
51 Dijo más Labán a Jacob: He aquí este majano, y he aquí esta señal, que he erigido entre tú y yo.
52 Testigo sea este majano, y testigo sea esta señal, que ni yo pasaré de este majano contra ti, ni tú pasarás de este majano ni de esta señal contra mí, para mal.
53 El Dios de Abraham y el Dios de Nacor juzgue entre nosotros, el Dios de sus padres. Y Jacob juró por aquel a quien temía Isaac su padre.
54 Entonces Jacob inmoló víctimas en el monte, y llamó a sus hermanos a comer pan; y comieron pan, y durmieron aquella noche en el monte.
55 Y se levantó Labán de mañana, y besó sus hijos y sus hijas, y los bendijo; y regresó y se volvió a su lugar.

31 Maar Jakob hoorde de zonen van Laban mopperen: "Jakob heeft onze vader alles afgenomen. Hij is rijk geworden van alles wat eerst van onze vader was." 2 Ook merkte hij dat Laban niet meer zo vriendelijk naar hem keek als eerst. 3 Toen zei de Heer tegen Jakob: "Ga terug naar je geboorteland en naar je familie. Ik zal met je zijn."
4 Jakob liet Rachel en Lea naar het veld komen waar hij met zijn kudden was. 5 Hij zei tegen hen: "Ik heb gemerkt dat jullie vader niet meer zo vriendelijk naar me kijkt als eerst. Maar de God van mijn vader is met mij geweest. 6 Ook weten jullie zelf dat ik heel erg hard voor jullie vader heb gewerkt. 7 Maar hij heeft mij bedrogen en mijn loon wel tien keer veranderd. Maar God heeft ervoor gezorgd dat ik daar geen last van had. 8 Als Laban zei: 'Jij mag de gespikkelde dieren als beloning hebben,' dan kregen alle dieren gespikkelde jongen. En als hij zei: 'Jij mag de gestreepte dieren als beloning hebben,' dan kregen alle dieren gestreepte jongen. 9 Zo heeft God het vee van jullie vader afgenomen en aan mij gegeven. 10 Op een keer liet God mij iets zien, in de paartijd van het vee. Ik zag het vóór me als in een droom. Ik zag dat de mannetjes-geiten die aan het paren waren, allemaal gestreept, gespikkeld en gevlekt waren. 11 En de Engel van God zei tegen mij in die droom: 'Jakob!' En ik zei: 'Ja, Heer.' 12 Toen zei Hij: 'Kijk om je heen. Dan zie je dat alle mannetjes-geiten die paren, gestreept, gespikkeld en gevlekt zijn. Want Ik heb alles gezien wat Laban je aandoet. 13 Ik ben de God van Bet-El, de plaats waar je als teken een steen rechtop hebt gezet en overgoten hebt met olijf-olie. Daar heb je Mij een eed gezworen. Maak je nu klaar om op reis te gaan en vertrek uit dit land. Ga terug naar het land van je familie.' "
14 Toen antwoordden Rachel en Lea: "Hebben we nog iets met onze vader te maken? Er is ook niets meer van de erfenis over. 15 Hij heeft ons verhandeld alsof we vreemdelingen waren. Ook heeft hij al ons geld opgemaakt. 16 Maar alle rijkdom die God van onze vader heeft afgepakt, is nu van ons en onze kinderen. Doe dus wat God tegen je heeft gezegd."
17 Toen maakte Jakob zich klaar om op reis te gaan en zette zijn kinderen en zijn vrouwen op kamelen. 18 En zijn hele kudde en alles wat hij verder had verdiend in Paddan-Aram, nam hij mee. Zo ging hij op weg naar zijn vader Izaäk in Kanaän. 19 Laban was op dat moment niet thuis. Hij was vertrokken om zijn schapen te scheren. Rachel kon daardoor ongemerkt de godenbeeldjes van haar vader stelen. 20 En Jakob kon ongemerkt bij Laban vertrekken, want hij vertelde hem niet dat hij vertrok. 21 Zo vluchtte hij weg met alles wat van hem was, stak de Rivier de Eufraat over en reisde in de richting van de bergen van Gilead.
Laban achtervolgt Jakob
22 Drie dagen later kreeg Laban te horen dat Jakob was gevlucht. 23 Hij nam een aantal mannen uit zijn familie mee en achtervolgde hem zeven dagen lang. In de bergen van Gilead haalde hij hem in. 24 Maar God kwam 's nachts in een droom naar de Arameeër Laban toe. Hij zei tegen hem: "Pas op! Ik wil niet dat je ook maar íets verkeerds tegen Jakob doet of zegt!" 25 Toen Laban Jakob inhaalde, had Jakob zijn tenten opgezet in de bergen van Gilead. Ook Laban en zijn familieleden zetten daar hun tenten op. 26 Laban zei tegen Jakob: "Waarom ben je zo stiekem vertrokken? Je hebt mijn dochters meegenomen alsof ze krijgsgevangenen zijn! 27 Waarom ben je gevlucht? Waarom heb je me bedrogen en heb je me niets gezegd? Ik zou een afscheidsfeest voor je hebben gehouden! 28 Maar je hebt me niet eens de kans gegeven om mijn kleinkinderen en mijn dochters te omhelzen. Belachelijk! 29 Ik zou het je eigenlijk betaald moeten zetten. Maar de God van je vader heeft vannacht tegen mij gezegd: 'Pas op! Ik wil niet dat je ook maar íets verkeerds tegen Jakob doet of zegt!' 30 En als je bent vertrokken omdat je zo vreselijk graag weer naar je familie wilde gaan, waarom heb je dan mijn godenbeeldjes gestolen?" 31 Jakob antwoordde Laban: "Ik ging stiekem, omdat ik bang was, dat je me je dochters zou afnemen. 32 Wat betreft je godenbeeldjes: de persoon bij wie je ze vindt, mag je doden. Kijk alles maar na, samen met je mannen, en neem mee wat van jou is!" Want Jakob wist niet dat Rachel ze had gestolen. 33 Laban doorzocht de tenten van Jakob, van Lea en van de twee slavinnen, maar vond niets. Toen hij Lea's tent doorzocht had, ging hij de tent van Rachel in. 34 Rachel had snel de beeldjes in het kamelenzadel verstopt. Daarna was ze op het zadel gaan zitten. Laban doorzocht de hele tent, maar kon niets vinden. 35 Rachel zei tegen haar vader: "Wees niet boos dat ik niet voor u opsta, maar ik ben ongesteld." Hij zocht overal, maar kon de beeldjes niet vinden.
36 Toen werd Jakob kwaad op Laban en zei tegen hem: "Wat heb ik je gedaan dat je mij zo achtervolgd hebt? 37 Je hebt al mijn spullen doorzocht. Wat heb je nu gevonden dat van jou is? Leg het hier neer zodat alle anderen het kunnen zien! Dan kunnen zij over ons rechtspreken. 38 Ik ben nu 20 jaar bij je geweest. Je schapen en je geiten hebben nooit doodgeboren jongen gekregen. Ik heb nooit een schaap van je opgegeten. 39 Wat door wilde dieren werd gedood, bracht ik niet naar jou, maar moest ik vergoeden. Als er overdag of 's nachts iets werd gestolen, kwam je van mij een vergoeding eisen. 40 Zo ging het met mij: overdag werd ik gesloopt door de hitte, 's nachts door de kou. Ik had nauwelijks tijd om te slapen. 41 Ik heb nu 20 jaar in je huis gewoond. Ik heb 14 jaar voor je gewerkt om met je twee dochters te mogen trouwen. Ik heb zes jaar voor je gewerkt om mijn vee te verdienen en je hebt mijn loon wel tien keer veranderd! 42 Als de God van mijn vader, de God van Abraham en de God voor wie Izaäk diep ontzag had niet met mij was geweest, zou je mij met lege handen hebben weggestuurd. Maar God heeft mijn narigheid en mijn harde werken gezien. Daarom heeft Hij je de afgelopen nacht zo streng gewaarschuwd!"
Laban sluit een verbond met Jakob
43 Toen zei Laban tegen Jakob: "Deze dochters zijn mijn dochters, deze kinderen zijn mijn kinderen en dit vee is mijn vee. Ja, alles wat je ziet is van mij. Ik zou mijn eigen dochters en de kinderen die ze hebben gekregen toch geen kwaad kunnen doen? 44 Kom, laten jij en ik daarom samen een verbond sluiten." 45 Toen nam Jakob een steen en zette die overeind, als teken van hun verbond.
46 En Jakob zei tegen zijn familie: "Breng stenen hier." Ze haalden stenen en stapelden die op. Op die steenhoop aten ze met elkaar een verbondsmaaltijd. 47 Laban noemde de steenhoop Jegar-Sahaduta (= Aramees voor 'steenhoop die getuige is'). Jakob noemde hem Gilead (= Hebreeuws voor 'steenhoop die getuige is'). 48 Laban zei: "Deze steenhoop is vandaag getuige van het verbond tussen jou en mij." Daarom werd die steenhoop 'Gilead' genoemd. 49 Ook noemde Laban hem Mizpa (= 'wachtpost'). "Want," zei hij, "de Heer houdt de wacht tussen jou en mij, wanneer we uit elkaar zijn gegaan. 50 Als je slecht bent voor mijn dochters of als je behalve mijn dochters nog andere vrouwen neemt, let op, al is er niemand bij ons, God zal zien wat er gebeurt."
51 Verder zei Laban tegen Jakob: "Deze steenhoop en deze steen die ik overeind heb gezet tussen jou en mij, zijn onze getuigen van wat wij nu afspreken. 52 Ik zal niet met slechte bedoelingen voorbij deze steenhoop naar jou toe komen. En jij zal niet met slechte bedoelingen voorbij deze steenhoop naar mij toe komen. 53 De God van Abraham, de God van Nahor, de God van hun vader Terach, zal Rechter over ons zijn." Toen zwoer Jakob bij de God voor wie zijn vader Izaäk diep ontzag had. 54 En hij offerde op die berg een dier aan de Heer en nodigde zijn familie uit voor een verbondsmaaltijd. Ze aten met elkaar en bleven die nacht op de berg. 55 De volgende morgen omhelsde Laban zijn kleinkinderen en dochters en zegende hen. Toen ging hij terug naar huis.
