2 天地万物都造好了。 ²第七天，上帝完成了祂的创造之工，就在第七天歇了一切的工。 ³上帝赐福给第七天，将其定为圣日，因为祂在这一天歇了祂一切的创造之工。 ⁴这是有关创造天地的记载。

上帝造亚当和夏娃

耶和华上帝创造天地的时候， ⁵地上还没有草木菜蔬，因为耶和华上帝还没有降雨在地上，土地也没有人耕作， ⁶但有水从地里涌出，浇灌大地。 ⁷耶和华上帝用地上的尘土造了人，把生命的气息吹进他的鼻孔里，他就成了有生命的人。 ⁸耶和华上帝在东方的伊甸开辟了一个园子，把祂所造的人安置在里面。 ⁹耶和华上帝使地面长出各种树木，它们既好看又能结出可吃的果子。在园子的中间有生命树和分别善恶的树。

¹⁰有一条河从伊甸流出来灌溉那园子，又从那里分出四条支流。 ¹¹第一条支流叫比逊河，它环绕着哈腓拉全境。那里有金子， ¹²且是上好的金子，还有珍珠和红玛瑙。 ¹³第二条支流是基训河，它环绕着古实全境。 ¹⁴第三条支流名叫底格里斯河，它流经亚述的东边。第四条支流是幼发拉底河。

¹⁵耶和华上帝把那人安置在伊甸的园子里，让他在那里耕种、看管园子。 ¹⁶耶和华上帝吩咐那人说：“你可以随意吃园中所有树上的果子， ¹⁷只是不可吃那棵分别善恶树的果子，因为你若吃了，当天必死。”

¹⁸耶和华上帝说：“那人独自一人不好，我要为他造一个相配的帮手。” ¹⁹耶和华上帝用尘土造了各种田野的走兽和空中的飞鸟，把它们带到那人跟前，看他怎么称呼这些动物。他叫这些动物什么，它们的名字就是什么。 ²⁰那人给所有的牲畜及田野的走兽和空中的飞鸟都起了名字。可是他找不到一个跟自己相配的帮手。 ²¹耶和华上帝使那人沉睡，然后从他身上取出一根肋骨，再把肉合起来。 ²²耶和华上帝用那根肋骨造成一个女人，带到那人跟前。 ²³那人说：

“这才是我的同类，
我骨中的骨，肉中的肉，
要称她为女人，
因为她是从男人身上取出来的。”

²⁴因此，人要离开父母，与妻子结合，二人成为一体。 ²⁵当时，他们夫妇二人都赤身露体，并不觉得羞耻。

2 So the heavens and the earth and everything else were created.

The Seventh Day

²^(A)^(B) By the seventh day God had finished his work, and so he rested. ³God blessed the seventh day and made it special, because on that day he rested from his work.

⁴That's how God created the heavens and the earth.

The Garden of Eden

When the Lord God made the heavens and the earth, ⁵no grass or plants were growing anywhere. God had not yet sent any rain, and there was no one to work the land. ⁶But streams^[a] came up from the ground and watered the earth.

⁷^(C) The Lord God took some soil from the ground and made a man.^[b] God breathed life into the man, and the man started breathing. ⁸The Lord made a garden in a place called Eden, which was in the east, and he put the man there.

⁹^(D) The Lord God filled the garden with all kinds of beautiful trees and fruit trees. Two other trees were in the middle of the garden. One of these gave life—the other gave the wisdom to know the difference between right and wrong.

¹⁰From Eden a river flowed out to water the garden, then it divided into four rivers. ¹¹The first one is the Pishon River that flows through the land of Havilah, ¹²where pure gold, rare perfumes, and precious stones are found. ¹³The second is the Gihon River that winds through Ethiopia.^[c] ¹⁴The Tigris River that flows east of Assyria is the third, and the fourth is the Euphrates River.

¹⁵The Lord God put the man in the Garden of Eden to take care of it and to look after it. ¹⁶But the Lord told him, “You may eat fruit from any tree in the garden, ¹⁷except the one that has the power to let you know the difference between right and wrong. If you eat any fruit from that tree, you will die before the day is over!”

¹⁸The Lord God said, “It isn't good for the man to live alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.” ^19-20So the Lord took some soil and made animals and birds. He brought them to the man to see what names he would give each of them. Then the man named the tame animals and the birds and the wild animals. That's how they got their names.

None of these was the right kind of partner for the man. ²¹So the Lord God made him fall into a deep sleep, and he took out one of the man's ribs. Then after closing the man's side, ²²the Lord made a woman out of the rib.

The Lord God brought her to the man, ²³and the man exclaimed,

“Here is someone like me!
She is part of my body,
my own flesh and bones.
She came from me, a man.
So I will name her Woman!”^[d]

²⁴^(E) That's why a man will leave his own father and mother. He marries a woman, and the two of them become like one person.

²⁵Although the man and his wife were both naked, they were not ashamed.
