Hosea, koning van Israël
17 Toen Achaz 12 jaar koning van Juda was, werd Hosea, de zoon van Ela, koning van Israël. Hij regeerde negen jaar in Samaria. 2 Hij leefde niet zoals de Heer het wil, maar hij was niet zo slecht als de koningen die vóór hem over Israël hadden geregeerd.
3 Koning Salmaneser van Assur trok met zijn leger naar Samaria. Koning Hosea gaf zich aan hem over en moest hem voortaan belasting betalen. 4 Maar de koning van Assur ontdekte dat Hosea een samenzwering tegen hem had gesmeed. Daarom nam hij hem gevangen en zette hem geboeid in de gevangenis. Hosea had namelijk hulp gezocht bij koning So van Egypte. Ook betaalde hij geen belasting meer aan de koning van Assur, zoals in de jaren daarvoor. 5 Daarom trok koning Salmaneser met zijn leger dwars door Israël naar Samaria. Drie jaar lang hield hij de stad omsingeld. 6 Toen lukte het hem om de stad te veroveren. Salmaneser nam koning Hosea en de bewoners van Israël gevangen mee naar Assur. Ze moesten van hem in de steden Hala en Habor gaan wonen die langs de rivier de Gozan liggen, en in de steden van Medië. Hosea was toen negen jaar koning geweest.
De ongehoorzaamheid van het volk Israël
7 Dit is allemaal gebeurd omdat de Israëlieten ongehoorzaam waren aan hun Heer God, die hen uit Egypte had bevrijd. Want ze waren andere goden gaan aanbidden. 8 En ze waren dezelfde slechte dingen gaan doen als de volken die de Heer voor Israël had weggejaagd. Ze hadden meegedaan met de slechte dingen die de koningen van Israël bedachten. 9 Ze hadden ook in het geheim allerlei dingen gedaan die de Heer niet goed vindt. En ze hadden overal altaren gebouwd, bij alle wachttorens, dorpen en steden. 10 Ze hadden allerlei godenbeelden en heilige palen neergezet op elke hoge heuvel en onder elke grote boom. 11 Daar hadden ze offers gebracht aan de afgoden. Net zoals de volken die de Heer voor hen had weggejaagd. Ze hadden de Heer heel erg kwaad gemaakt met de slechte dingen die ze deden. 12 Ze hadden afgoden aanbeden, terwijl de Heer duidelijk tegen hen gezegd had dat ze dat niet mochten doen. 13 De Heer had Israël en Juda steeds gewaarschuwd door profeten. Zij zeiden: "Jullie moeten ophouden met de slechte dingen die jullie doen. Wees weer gehoorzaam aan de wetten en leefregels die Ik jullie heb gegeven in de wet die Ik aan jullie voorouders gaf. Mijn profeten hebben die aan jullie geleerd." 14 Maar ze hadden niet geluisterd en waren net zo ongehoorzaam geweest als hun voorvaders, die niet wilden vertrouwen op hun Heer God. 15 Ze hadden Gods wetten en leefregels en het verbond dat Hij met hun voorouders had gesloten, aan de kant geschoven. Ook luisterden ze niet naar Hem als Hij hen bestrafte voor hun ongehoorzaamheid. Ze hadden altijd de afgoden gediend. Daarom liep het nu slecht met hen af. Ze hadden aldoor dezelfde dingen gedaan die de volken om hen heen gedaan hadden, ook al had de Heer hun dat verboden. 16 Ze hielden zich niet meer aan de wetten die hun Heer God aan hen had gegeven. Ze hadden gouden beelden gemaakt van twee kalveren, heilige palen neergezet en de zon en de maan aanbeden. Ook hadden ze de god Baäl aanbeden. 17 Ze hadden hun zonen en dochters als brand-offers geofferd en zich met toverij en waarzeggerij beziggehouden. Ze hadden andere goden gediend en niet geleefd zoals de Heer het wil. Zo hadden ze Hem kwaad gemaakt. 18 Daarom was de Heer zó woedend op Israël geworden, dat Hij niets meer met hen te maken wilde hebben. Zo werd Israël vernietigd. Alleen de stam van Juda bleef over.
19 Maar ook de stam van Juda had zich niet aan de wetten van zijn Heer God gehouden. Ze hadden dezelfde dingen gedaan als de rest van Israël. 20 Daarom bracht God het hele volk Israël in grote moeilijkheden. Hij gaf hen in de macht van veroveraars. Hij wilde niets meer met hen te maken hebben.
21 God had het grootste deel van Israël losgescheurd van de familie van David. Zij kroonden Jerobeam, de zoon van Nebat, tot koning. Jerobeam zorgde ervoor dat Israël God niet langer wilde dienen. 22 Het was zijn schuld dat het volk vreselijke dingen ging doen. Want Jerobeam gaf hun het slechte voorbeeld. 23 En dat ging zo door, totdat de Heer besloot dat Hij niets meer met hen te maken wilde hebben. Van tevoren had Hij al door zijn profeten laten zeggen dat dat zou gebeuren. Zo werden de bewoners van het koninkrijk Israël gevangen meegenomen naar Assur. En daar zijn ze nu nog.
De volken die in Israël kwamen wonen
24 Daarna stuurde de koning van Assur mensen uit Babel, Kuta, Avva, Hamat en Sefarvaïm naar de steden van Samaria. Zij moesten daar gaan wonen in plaats van de Israëlieten. Zo werd de streek Samaria van hen. 25 Toen zij daar pas woonden, aanbaden ze de Heer niet. Daarom stuurde de Heer leeuwen op hen af. Een aantal mensen werd door de leeuwen gedood. 26 Toen zeiden de raadgevers van de koning van Assur tegen de koning: "U heeft andere volken naar de steden van Samaria laten brengen. Maar zij weten niet hoe de God van dat land aanbeden wil worden. Daarom heeft Hij leeuwen op hen afgestuurd. Ze doden de mensen omdat ze Hem niet op de goede manier aanbidden." 27 Toen beval de koning van Assur: "Breng één van de priesters die jullie uit dat land hebben meegenomen, weer terug. Hij moet daar gaan wonen en aan de mensen leren hoe ze de God van dat land moeten aanbidden."
28 Toen stuurden ze één van de priesters die uit Samaria was meegenomen, terug naar Israël. Hij ging in Bet-El wonen en leerde de mensen hoe ze de Heer moesten aanbidden. 29 Maar elk volk bleef ook zijn eigen beelden neerzetten. Die zetten ze neer in de tempels en bij de altaren die ze in hun steden hadden gebouwd. 30 De mensen uit Babel maakten een beeld van de god Sukkot-Benot. De mensen uit Kuta maakten een beeld van de god Nergal. De mensen uit Hamat maakten een beeld van de god Asima. 31 De mensen uit Avva maakten beelden van de goden Nibhaz en Tirtak. De mensen uit Sefarvaïm maakten beelden van de goden Adrammelech en Anammelech en offerden hun kinderen als brand-offer voor hen. 32 Maar ze aanbaden ook de Heer. Ze maakten allerlei mensen tot priester die de Heer moesten dienen in de tempels en bij de altaren op de heuvels. 33 Zo aanbaden ze de Heer, maar ook hun eigen goden die ze kenden vanuit hun eigen land. 34 Dat doen ze nu nog steeds. Ze aanbidden niet werkelijk de Heer. Ze houden zich niet aan de wetten en leefregels die de Heer had gegeven aan het volk van Jakob (Jakob had van de Heer de nieuwe naam 'Israël' gekregen).
35 De Heer had met het volk Israël een verbond gesloten en bevolen: 'Jullie mogen geen andere goden aanbidden. Jullie mogen hen niet dienen en er geen offers aan brengen. 36 Aanbid alleen Mij. Want Ik ben de Heer die jullie op een machtige manier uit Egypte heeft bevrijd. Aanbid Mij en breng offers aan Mij. 37 Houd je altijd aan de wetten en leefregels die Ik jullie heb gegeven en voor jullie heb opgeschreven. Aanbid geen andere goden. 38 Vergeet nooit het verbond dat Ik met jullie heb gesloten. 39 Aanbid geen andere goden, maar alleen Mij, jullie Heer God. Dan zal Ik jullie redden van al jullie vijanden.' 40 Maar de Israëlieten hebben niet geluisterd en bleven dezelfde slechte dingen doen die ze vroeger ook al deden.
41 Zo aanbaden deze volken de Heer en tegelijkertijd hun afgoden. Hun kinderen en kleinkinderen doen nu[a] nog steeds hetzelfde.

Hoshea rules Israel
17 Hoshea, Elah’s son, became king in Samaria in the twelfth year of Judah’s king Ahaz. He ruled over Israel for nine years. 2 He did what was evil in the Lord’s eyes, but he wasn’t as bad as the Israelite kings who preceded him. 3 Assyria’s King Shalmaneser marched against Hoshea, and Hoshea became Shalmaneser’s servant, paying him tribute. 4 But the Assyrian king discovered that Hoshea was a traitor, because Hoshea sent messengers to Egypt’s King So. Hoshea stopped paying tribute to the Assyrian king as he had in previous years, so the Assyrian king arrested him and put him in prison. 5 Then the Assyrian king invaded the whole country. He marched against Samaria and attacked it for three years. 6 In Hoshea’s ninth year, the Assyrian king captured Samaria. He sent Israel into exile to Assyria, resettling them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River, and in the cities of the Medes.
The northern kingdom falls
7 All this happened because the Israelites sinned against the Lord their God, who brought them up from the land of Egypt, out from under the power of Pharaoh, Egypt’s king. They worshipped other gods. 8 They followed the practices of the nations that the Lord had removed before the Israelites, as well as the practices that the Israelite kings had done.[a] 9 The Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their God that weren’t right. They built shrines in all their towns, from watchtowers to fortified cities. 10 They set up sacred pillars and sacred poles[b] on every high hill and beneath every green tree. 11 At every shrine they burned incense, just as the nations did that the Lord sent into exile before them. They did evil things that made the Lord angry. 12 They worshipped images about which the Lord had said, Don’t do such things! 13 The Lord warned Israel and Judah through all the prophets and seers, telling them, Turn from your evil ways. Keep my commandments and my regulations in agreement with the entire Instruction that I commanded your ancestors and sent through my servants the prophets.
14 But they wouldn’t listen. They were stubborn like their ancestors who didn’t trust the Lord their God. 15 They rejected his regulations and the covenant he had made with their ancestors, along with the warnings he had given them. They followed worthless images so that they too became worthless. And they imitated the neighboring nations that the Lord had forbidden them to imitate. 16 They deserted all the commandments of the Lord their God. They made themselves two metal idols cast in the shape of calves and made a sacred pole.[c] They bowed down to all the heavenly bodies. They served Baal. 17 They burned their sons and daughters alive. They practiced divination and sought omens. They gave themselves over to doing what was evil in the Lord’s eyes and made him angry.
18 So the Lord was very angry at Israel. He removed them from his presence. Only the tribe of Judah was spared. 19 But Judah didn’t keep the commands of the Lord their God either. They followed the practices of Israel. 20 So the Lord rejected all of Israel’s descendants. He punished them, and he handed them over to enemies who plundered them until he finally threw them out of his sight.
21 When Israel broke away[d] from David’s dynasty, they made Nebat’s son Jeroboam the king. Jeroboam drove Israel away from the Lord. He caused them to commit great sin. 22 And the Israelites continued walking in all the sins that Jeroboam did. They didn’t deviate from them, 23 and the Lord finally removed Israel from his presence. That was exactly what he had warned through all his servants the prophets. So Israel was exiled from its land to Assyria. And that’s still how it is today.
New settlers in Samaria
24 The Assyrian king brought people from Babylon, Cuth, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim, resettling them in the cities of Samaria in place of the Israelites. These people took control of Samaria and settled in its cities. 25 But when they began to live there, they didn’t worship the Lord, so the Lord sent lions against them, and the lions began to kill them. 26 Assyria’s king was told about this: “The nations you sent into exile and resettled in the cities of Samaria don’t know the religious practices of the local god. He’s sent lions against them, and the lions are killing them because none of them know the religious practices of the local god.”
27 So Assyria’s king commanded, “Return one of the priests that you exiled from there. He[e] should go back and live there. He should teach them the religious practices of the local god.” 28 So one of the priests who had been exiled from Samaria went back. He lived in Bethel and taught the people how to worship the Lord.
29 But each nationality still made its own gods. They set them up in the houses that the people of Samaria had made at the shrines. Each nationality did this in whichever cities they lived. 30 The Babylonian people made the god Succoth-benoth, the Cuthean people made Nergal, and the people from Hamath made Ashima. 31 The Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak. The Sepharvites burned their children alive as a sacrifice to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the Sepharvite gods. 32 They also worshipped the Lord, but they appointed priests for the shrines from their whole population. These priests worked in the houses at the shrines. 33 So they worshipped the Lord, but they also served their own gods according to the religious practices of the nations from which they had been exiled.
34 They are still following their former religious practices to this very day. They don’t really worship the Lord. Nor do they follow the regulations, the case laws, the Instruction, or the commandment that the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he renamed Israel. 35 The Lord had made a covenant with them, commanding them, Don’t worship other gods. Don’t bow down to them or serve them. Don’t sacrifice to them. 36 Instead, worship only the Lord. He’s the one who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great strength and an outstretched arm. Bow down to him! Sacrifice to him! 37 You must carefully keep the regulations and case laws, the Instruction, and the commandment that he wrote for you. Don’t worship other gods. 38 Don’t forget the covenant that I made with you. Don’t worship other gods. 39 Instead, worship only the Lord your God. He will rescue you from your enemies’ power.
40 But they wouldn’t listen. Instead, they continued doing their former religious practices. 41 So these nations worship the Lord, but they also serve their idols. The children and the grandchildren are doing the very same thing their parents did. And that’s how things still are today.

Colonizarea Samariei
24 Împăratul Asiriei a adus oameni din Babilon, din Cuta, din Ava, din Hamat şi din Sefarvayim şi i-a aşezat în cetăţile Samariei, în locul israeliţilor. Ei au luat în stăpânire Samaria şi au locuit în cetăţile ei. 25 Când au început ei să locuiască acolo, nu se temeau de Domnul şi, prin urmare, Domnul a trimis împotriva lor nişte lei care au ucis pe câţiva dintre ei. 26 Atunci i-au zis împăratului Asiriei: „Popoarele pe care le-ai adus pentru a locui în cetăţile Samariei, nu cunosc Legea Dumnezeului acestei ţări. El a trimis împotriva lor nişte lei şi au fost ucise de ei pentru că nu cunosc Legea Dumnezeului acestei ţări!“
27 Atunci împăratul Asiriei a poruncit zicând: „Trimiteţi pe unul din preoţii care au fost luaţi captivi din Samaria să meargă şi să locuiască acolo, ca să-i înveţe Legea Dumnezeului acelei ţări.“ 28 Unul din preoţii care fusese luat captiv din Samaria s-a întors, a locuit la Betel şi i-a învăţat cum să se teamă de Domnul. 29 Dar fiecare popor şi-a făcut proprii lui zei în cetăţile în care locuiau şi i-au pus în temple, pe înălţimile zidite de samariteni. 30 Oamenii din Babilon l-au făcut pe Sucot-Benot, oamenii din Cuta l-au făcut pe Nergal, oamenii din Hamat l-au făcut pe Aşima, 31 iar cei din Ava i-au făcut pe Nibhaz şi Tartak. Cei din Sefarvayim îşi ardeau fiii în foc, ca jertfă pentru Adra-Melek şi Ana-Melek, zeii din Sefarvayim. 32 Ei se închinau Domnului[i], dar totodată şi-au numit pentru ei înşişi tot felul de preoţi ai înălţimilor, care aduceau pentru ei jertfe în templele de pe înălţimi. 33 Astfel ei se închinau Domnului, dar slujeau şi zeilor lor după obiceiul popoarelor din care au fost aduşi. 34 Până în ziua de astăzi ei au aceleaşi obiceiuri vechi. Ei nu se închină Domnului; nu păzesc nici hotărârile şi rânduielile lor şi nici legile şi poruncile pe care le-a dat Domnul urmaşilor lui Iacov, căruia i-a pus numele Israel. 35 Domnul încheiase cu ei un legământ şi le poruncise astfel: „Să nu vă temeţi de alţi dumnezei, să nu vă închinaţi lor, să nu le slujiţi şi să nu le aduceţi jertfe, 36 ci să vă temeţi de Domnul, Care v-a scos din ţara Egiptului cu mare putere şi cu braţ întins! Lui să vă închinaţi şi Lui să-I aduceţi jertfe! 37 Vegheaţi întotdeauna să păziţi învăţăturile, rânduielile, legile şi poruncile pe care le-a scris pentru voi şi să nu vă temeţi de alţi dumnezei. 38 Să nu uitaţi legământul pe care Eu l-am încheiat cu voi şi să nu vă temeţi de alţi dumnezei, 39 ci să vă temeţi de Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru, şi El vă va izbăvi din mâna tuturor duşmanilor voştri.“ 40 Ei însă n-au ascultat, ci au urmat vechile lor obiceiuri. 41 Aşadar, aceste popoare se temeau de Domnul, dar slujeau şi idolilor lor. Până în ziua de azi copiii lor şi copiii copiilor lor fac ceea ce au făcut şi părinţii lor.
