Solomon Requests Wisdom(A)
3 Now (B)Solomon made [a]a treaty with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and married Pharaoh’s daughter; then he brought her (C)to the City of David until he had finished building his (D)own house, and (E)the house of the Lord, and (F)the wall all around Jerusalem. 2 (G)Meanwhile the people sacrificed at the high places, because there was no house built for the name of the Lord until those days. 3 And Solomon (H)loved the Lord, (I)walking in the statutes of his father David, except that he sacrificed and burned incense at the high places.
4 Now (J)the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, (K)for that was the great high place: Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 (L)At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon (M)in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?”
6 (N)And Solomon said: “You have shown great mercy to Your servant David my father, because he (O)walked before You in truth, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with You; You have continued this great kindness for him, and You (P)have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 Now, O Lord my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a (Q)little child; I do not know how (R)to go out or come in. 8 And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You (S)have chosen, a great people, (T)too numerous to be numbered or counted. 9 (U)Therefore give to Your servant an [b]understanding heart (V)to judge Your people, that I may (W)discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”
10 The speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 Then God said to him: “Because you have asked this thing, and have (X)not asked long life for yourself, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice, 12 (Y)behold, I have done according to your words; (Z)see, I have given you a wise and understanding heart, so that there has not been anyone like you before you, nor shall any like you arise after you. 13 And I have also (AA)given you what you have not asked: both (AB)riches and honor, so that there shall not be anyone like you among the kings all your days. 14 So (AC)if you walk in My ways, to keep My statutes and My commandments, (AD)as your father David walked, then I will (AE)lengthen[c] your days.”
15 Then Solomon (AF)awoke; and indeed it had been a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, offered up burnt offerings, offered peace offerings, and (AG)made a feast for all his servants.
Solomon’s Wise Judgment
16 Now two women who were harlots came to the king, and (AH)stood before him. 17 And one woman said, “O my lord, this woman and I dwell in the same house; and I gave birth while she was in the house. 18 Then it happened, the third day after I had given birth, that this woman also gave birth. And we were together; [d]no one was with us in the house, except the two of us in the house. 19 And this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him. 20 So she arose in the middle of the night and took my son from my side, while your maidservant slept, and laid him in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. 21 And when I rose in the morning to nurse my son, there he was, dead. But when I had examined him in the morning, indeed, he was not my son whom I had borne.”
22 Then the other woman said, “No! But the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.”
And the first woman said, “No! But the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.”
Thus they spoke before the king.
23 And the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son, who lives, and your son is the dead one’; and the other says, ‘No! But your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’ ” 24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. 25 And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other.”
26 Then the woman whose son was living spoke to the king, for (AI)she yearned with compassion for her son; and she said, “O my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him!”
But the other said, “Let him be neither mine nor yours, but divide him.”
27 So the king answered and said, “Give the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him; she is his mother.”
28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had rendered; and they feared the king, for they saw that the (AJ)wisdom of God was in him to administer justice.

Salomón se casa con la hija del faraón
3 El rey Salomón se casó con la hija del faraón, rey de Egipto, y quedó emparentado con él. Luego llevó a su esposa a la ciudad de David mientras terminaban de construir su palacio, el templo del Señor y las murallas de Jerusalén. 2 En esos tiempos el pueblo ofrecía sus sacrificios al Señor en los altares que estaban en lo alto de los montes, porque aún no se había construido un templo para el Señor.
Salomón pide sabiduría(A)
3 Salomón amaba al Señor y cumplía los estatutos ordenados por su padre David, pero también ofrecía sacrificios y quemaba incienso al Señor, en los altares de los montes. 4 Salomón acostumbraba ofrecer sus sacrificios en Gabaón, porque era el altar principal, y allí ofrecía mil holocaustos. 5 Pero una noche en que Salomón dormía en Gabaón, el Señor se le apareció en sueños y le dijo:
«Pídeme lo que quieras que yo te conceda.»
6 Entonces Salomón dijo:
«Tu misericordia siempre acompañó a tu siervo, mi padre David, porque se condujo delante de ti con sinceridad, y fue un hombre justo y te entregó su corazón. Tú has sido misericordioso con él porque le has concedido que un hijo ocupe su trono, como hoy podemos verlo. 7 Ahora, Señor y Dios mío, tú me has puesto en el trono que ocupó mi padre David. Reconozco que soy muy joven, y que muchas veces no sé qué hacer. 8 Este siervo tuyo se halla en medio del pueblo que tú escogiste, y que es tan numeroso que es imposible contarlo. 9 Yo te pido que me des un corazón con mucho entendimiento para gobernar a tu pueblo y para discenir entre lo bueno y lo malo. Porque ¿quién es capaz de gobernar a este pueblo tan grande?»
10 Al Señor le agradó la petición de Salomón. 11 Entonces le dijo:
«Puesto que me has pedido esto, y no una larga vida ni muchas riquezas, ni tampoco pediste vengarte de tus enemigos, sino que pediste inteligencia para saber escuchar, 12 voy a hacer lo que me has pedido. Voy a darte un corazón sabio y sensible, como nadie lo ha tenido antes ni lo tendrá después de ti. 13 Además, voy a darte las cosas que no me pediste: Muchas riquezas y fama, a tal grado que, mientras vivas, no habrá ningún otro rey como tú. 14 Y si caminas por mis sendas, y cumples mis estatutos y mandamientos, como lo hizo David tu padre, yo te concederé una larga vida.»
15 Cuando Salomón despertó de su sueño, fue a Jerusalén y se presentó delante del arca del pacto del Señor, y ofreció holocaustos y sacrificios de paz; y luego hizo un banquete para todos sus siervos.
Sabiduría y prosperidad de Salomón
16 Por esos días dos prostitutas se presentaron ante el rey, 17 y una de ellas dijo:
«Su Majestad, esta mujer y yo vivimos en una misma casa, y mientras yo estaba allí, tuve un hijo. 18 Tres días después, y mientras las dos vivíamos juntas, también ella tuvo un hijo. Nadie más estaba en la casa, sino sólo nosotras dos. 19 Pero una noche ella se acostó sobre su niño, y el niño murió. 20 Entonces se levantó a medianoche, tomó a mi hijo, que dormía junto a mí, y lo puso a su lado, y entonces puso al niño muerto junto a mí. 21 En la madrugada, cuando me levanté para darle el pecho a mi hijo, me di cuenta de que estaba muerto; y cuando lo observé bien por la mañana, me di cuenta de que no era mi hijo.»
22 La segunda mujer dijo entonces:
«¡El niño vivo es mío; el que está muerto es el tuyo!»
Pero la primera mujer insistía:
«No, el niño muerto es tu hijo; el mío es el que está vivo.»
23 Entonces el rey dijo:
«Una de ustedes afirma que su hijo está vivo, y que el niño muerto es de la otra; y la otra afirma que el niño vivo es el suyo, y que el niño muerto es de la otra.»
24 Entonces el rey dio una orden:
«¡Tráiganme una espada!»
En cuanto se la llevaron, 25 el rey ordenó:
«Traigan al niño vivo, y pártanlo por la mitad, y den una mitad a una, y la otra mitad a la otra.»
26 Entonces la madre del niño vivo, llena de compasión por su hijo, suplicó al rey:
«¡Ay, Su Majestad! ¡No lo maten! ¡Que se quede esta mujer con el niño vivo!»
Pero la otra dijo:
«Ni para ti, ni para mí. ¡Que lo partan por la mitad!»
27 Entonces el rey intervino, y dijo:
«Entreguen el niño vivo a esta mujer, que es la verdadera madre.»
28 Y cuando todo el pueblo de Israel supo del juicio que había emitido el rey, sintieron respeto por él, pues se dieron cuenta de que Dios le había dado sabiduría para impartir justicia.
