New International Version

¹³When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face^(A) and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

¹⁴He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left,^(B) and now they are trying to kill me too.”

¹⁵The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael^(C) king over Aram.

¹³So it was, when Elijah heard it, that ^(A)he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. ^(B)Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

¹⁴^(C)And he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”

¹⁵Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; ^(D)and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria.
