L'acqua scaturita dalla roccia
17 Tutta la comunità degli Israeliti levò l'accampamento dal deserto di Sin, secondo l'ordine che il Signore dava di tappa in tappa, e si accampò a Refidim. Ma non c'era acqua da bere per il popolo. 2 Il popolo protestò contro Mosè: «Dateci acqua da bere!». Mosè disse loro: «Perché protestate con me? Perché mettete alla prova il Signore?». 3 In quel luogo dunque il popolo soffriva la sete per mancanza di acqua; il popolo mormorò contro Mosè e disse: «Perché ci hai fatti uscire dall'Egitto per far morire di sete noi, i nostri figli e il nostro bestiame?». 4 Allora Mosè invocò l'aiuto del Signore, dicendo: «Che farò io per questo popolo? Ancora un poco e mi lapideranno!». 5 Il Signore disse a Mosè: «Passa davanti al popolo e prendi con te alcuni anziani di Israele. Prendi in mano il bastone con cui hai percosso il Nilo, e và! 6 Ecco, io starò davanti a te sulla roccia, sull'Oreb; tu batterai sulla roccia: ne uscirà acqua e il popolo berrà». Mosè così fece sotto gli occhi degli anziani d'Israele. 7 Si chiamò quel luogo Massa e Meriba, a causa della protesta degli Israeliti e perché misero alla prova il Signore, dicendo: «Il Signore è in mezzo a noi sì o no?».
Combattimento contro Amalek
8 Allora Amalek venne a combattere contro Israele a Refidim. 9 Mosè disse a Giosuè: «Scegli per noi alcuni uomini ed esci in battaglia contro Amalek. Domani io starò ritto sulla cima del colle con in mano il bastone di Dio». 10 Giosuè eseguì quanto gli aveva ordinato Mosè per combattere contro Amalek, mentre Mosè, Aronne, e Cur salirono sulla cima del colle. 11 Quando Mosè alzava le mani, Israele era il più forte, ma quando le lasciava cadere, era più forte Amalek. 12 Poiché Mosè sentiva pesare le mani dalla stanchezza, presero una pietra, la collocarono sotto di lui ed egli vi sedette, mentre Aronne e Cur, uno da una parte e l'altro dall'altra, sostenevano le sue mani. Così le sue mani rimasero ferme fino al tramonto del sole. 13 Giosuè sconfisse Amalek e il suo popolo passandoli poi a fil di spada. 14 Allora il Signore disse a Mosè: «Scrivi questo per ricordo nel libro e mettilo negli orecchi di Giosuè: io cancellerò del tutto la memoria di Amalek sotto il cielo!».
15 Allora Mosè costruì un altare, lo chiamò «Il Signore è il mio vessillo» 16 e disse:
«Una mano s'è levata sul trono del Signore:
vi sarà guerra del Signore contro Amalek
di generazione in generazione!».

17 以色列全体会众按照耶和华的吩咐，从汛旷野启程，一程一程往前行，来到利非订安营，可是那里没有水喝。 2 百姓便跟摩西吵闹，要他给他们水喝。摩西便对他们说：“你们为什么跟我吵闹？为什么试探耶和华？” 3 百姓非常口渴，他们向摩西抱怨说：“你为什么要把我们带出埃及，让我们一家大小和牲畜都在这里渴死？”
4 摩西就呼求耶和华说：“我拿这些百姓怎么办？他们准备拿石块打死我！” 5 耶和华对摩西说：“你带着之前击打尼罗河水的杖，率领以色列的几个长老走在众人前面。 6 我必在何烈的磐石那里等候你们，你用杖击打磐石，磐石必流出水来给众人喝。”摩西便当着以色列长老的面这样做了。 7 摩西称那地方为玛撒和米利巴[a]，因为百姓在那里吵闹，又试探耶和华，说：“耶和华真的在我们当中吗？”
战胜亚玛力人
8 后来，亚玛力人到利非订攻打以色列人。 9 摩西对约书亚说：“选一些人出去迎战亚玛力人。明天，我会带着上帝的杖站在山顶上。” 10 约书亚便遵照摩西的吩咐迎战亚玛力人，摩西、亚伦和户珥站在山顶上。 11 摩西什么时候举手，以色列人就得胜；他的手什么时候垂下来，亚玛力人就占上风。 12 不久，摩西的手疲倦发软，亚伦和户珥就抬来一块石头让摩西坐下，然后站在他的两边扶着他的手，他就稳稳地举着手，直到日落。 13 这样，约书亚用刀杀败了亚玛力人。

Chapter 17
Water from the Rock. 1 From the wilderness of Sin the whole Israelite community journeyed by stages, as the Lord directed, and encamped at Rephidim.(A)
But there was no water for the people to drink, 2 (B)and so they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses replied to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to a test?” 3 Here, then, in their thirst for water, the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “Why then did you bring us up out of Egypt? To have us die of thirst with our children and our livestock?” 4 So Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? A little more and they will stone me!” 5 The Lord answered Moses: Go on ahead of the people, and take along with you some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the staff with which you struck the Nile. 6 I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink.(C) Moses did this, in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 The place was named Massah and Meribah,[a] because the Israelites quarreled there and tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord in our midst or not?”(D)
Battle with Amalek. 8 Then Amalek[b] came and waged war against Israel in Rephidim.(E) 9 So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some men for us, and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle. I will be standing on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” 10 Joshua did as Moses told him: he engaged Amalek in battle while Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight. 12 Moses’ hands, however, grew tired; so they took a rock and put it under him and he sat on it. Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady until sunset. 13 And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses: Write this down in a book as something to be remembered, and recite it to Joshua:(F) I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. 15 Moses built an altar there, which he named Yahweh-nissi;[c] 16 for he said, “Take up the banner of the Lord![d] The Lord has a war against Amalek through the ages.”

- 17:8 Amalek: the Amalekites appear in the Bible as early inhabitants of southern Palestine and the Sinai peninsula prior to the appearance of the Israelites in the region. Cf. Nm 24:20.
- 17:15 Yahweh-nissi: meaning, “the Lord is my banner.”
- 17:16 Take up the banner of the Lord: lit., “a hand on the Lord’s banner,” apparently a war cry for the Israelite troops in the conduct of Holy War; however, the Hebrew text is difficult to interpret.

17 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the Lord, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the Lord?
3 And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?
4 And Moses cried unto the Lord, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.
5 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.
6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?
8 Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
9 And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.
10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
12 But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.
13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
14 And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:
16 For he said, Because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.
