12 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,

² “This month shall be to you the beginning of months. It shall be to you the first month of the year.

³ “Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth of this month, let every man take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his fathers, a lamb for each household.

⁴ ‘And if the household is too small for the lamb, he and his neighbor (who is next to his house) shall take one, according to the number of people. You shall divide the lamb according to each man’s eating.

⁵ ‘Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of a year old. You shall take it from the lambs or from the kids.

⁶ ‘And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month. Then all the multitude of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.

⁷ ‘Afterward, they shall take from the blood and strike it on the two side posts, and on the lintels, of the houses where they shall eat it.

⁸ ‘And they shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and unleavened bread. With sour herbs they shall eat it.

⁹ ‘Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all in water, but roasted with fire (its head, its feet, and its entrails).

¹⁰ ‘And you shall reserve nothing of it until the morning. But that which remains of it in the morning you shall burn with fire.

¹¹ ‘And thus shall you eat it: with a belt around your waist, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD’s Passover.

¹² ‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt the same night and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and I will execute judgment upon all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD.

¹³ ‘And the blood shall be a sign for you upon the houses where you are. So, when I see the blood, I will pass over you. And the plague shall not be upon you, to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

¹⁴ ‘And this day shall be to you a remembrance. And you shall keep it a holy Feast to the LORD, throughout your generations. You shall keep it holy by an ordinance, forever.

¹⁵ ‘For seven days, you shall eat unleavened bread; and the first day, you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel.

¹⁶ ‘And on the first day there shall be a holy assembly. Also, on the seventh day there shall be a holy assembly for you. No work shall be done on them, except that which everyone must eat. That only may you do.

¹⁷ ‘You shall also keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For that same day, I will bring your armies out of the land of Egypt. Therefore, you shall observe this day, throughout your posterity, by an ordinance, forever.

¹⁸ ‘In the first month, from twilight on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall eat unleavened bread until twilight on the twenty-first day of the month.

¹⁹ ‘For seven days, no leaven shall be found in your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread, that person shall be cut off from the Congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or born in the land.

²⁰ ‘You shall eat no leavened bread. In all your dwellings, you shall eat unleavened bread.’”

²¹ Then, Moses called all the elders of Israel, and said to them, “Choose and take a lamb for each of your households; and kill the Passover.

²² “And take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin. And strike the lintel and the side posts with the blood that is in the basin. And let none of you go out at the door of the house until the morning.

²³ “For the LORD will pass by to strike the Egyptians. And when He sees the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to plague you.

²⁴ “Therefore, you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and for your sons, forever.

²⁵ “And when you shall come into the land which the LORD will give you, as He has promised, then you shall keep this service.

²⁶ “And when your children ask you, ‘What service is this you keep?’

²⁷ “then you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the LORD’s Passover, Who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and preserved our houses.’” Then the people bowed themselves and worshipped.

²⁸ So, the children of Israel went and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron. So did they.

²⁹ Now at midnight, the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt— from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive that was in prison—and all the firstborn of beasts.

³⁰ And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians. And there was a great cry in Egypt. For there was no house where there was not one dead.

³¹ And he sent word to Moses and to Aaron by night, saying, “Rise up! Get out from among my people—both you and the children of Israel—and go serve the LORD as you have said.

³² “Also, take your sheep and your cattle (as you have said) and depart. And bless me also.”

³³ And the Egyptians urged the people to send them out of the land in haste. For they said, “We shall all die.”

³⁴ Therefore, the people took their dough before it was leavened, with their bowls bound up in clothing upon their shoulders.

³⁵ And the children of Israel did according to the saying of Moses. And they asked for articles of silver and articles of gold and clothing from the Egyptians.

³⁶ And the LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. And they granted their request. So, they plundered the Egyptians.

³⁷ Then the children of Israel took their journey from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children.

³⁸ And a great mixed multitude of people went out with them, as well as flocks and herds and cattle in great abundance.

³⁹ And they baked the dough which they brought out of Egypt and made unleavened cakes (for it was not leavened because they were thrust out of Egypt and could not linger, nor could they prepare provisions for themselves).

⁴⁰ So, the dwelling of the children of Israel, while they dwelled in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.

⁴¹ And when the four hundred and thirty years had expired—on that very same day— all the hosts of the LORD departed out of the land of Egypt.

⁴² It is a night to be kept holy to the LORD, because He brought them out of the land of Egypt. This is the night of the LORD which all the children of Israel must keep throughout their generations.

⁴³ Also, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the Law of the Passover: No stranger shall eat thereof.

⁴⁴ “But, every servant that is bought for money, when you have circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof.

⁴⁵ “A stranger or a hired servant shall not eat thereof.

⁴⁶ “It shall be eaten in one house. You shall carry none of the flesh out of the house, nor shall you break a bone thereof.

⁴⁷ “All the Congregation of Israel shall observe it.

⁴⁸ “But, if a stranger who dwells with you wishes to observe the Passover of the LORD, let him circumcise all the males who belong to him; and then let him come and observe it. And he shall be as one who was born in the land. For no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.

⁴⁹ “One Law shall be for him who is born in the land and to the stranger who dwells among you.”

⁵⁰ Then all the children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. So did they.

⁵¹ And that same day, the LORD brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.
