叶特罗的探视
18 摩西的岳父，米甸祭司叶特罗，听见 神为摩西和为他百姓以色列所行的一切事，就是耶和华将以色列从埃及领了出来。 2 摩西的岳父叶特罗带着西坡拉，就是摩西先前送回家的妻子， 3 又带着她的两个儿子：一个名叫革舜，因为摩西说：“我在外地作了寄居者”； 4 另一个名叫以利以谢，因为他说：“我父亲的 神帮助我，救我脱离法老的刀。” 5 摩西的岳父叶特罗带着摩西的妻子和两个儿子来到 神的山，就是摩西在旷野安营的地方。 6 他对摩西说：“我是[a]你岳父叶特罗，带着你的妻子和两个儿子来到你这里。” 7 摩西迎接他的岳父，向他下拜，亲他，彼此问安，然后进入帐棚。 8 摩西将耶和华为以色列的缘故向法老和埃及人所行的一切事，他们在路上遭遇的一切艰难，以及耶和华怎样搭救他们，都述说给他的岳父听。 9 叶特罗因耶和华待以色列的一切恩惠，就是拯救他们脱离埃及人的手，就非常喜乐。 10 叶特罗说：“耶和华是应当称颂的，他救了你们脱离埃及人和法老的手，将这百姓从埃及人的手里救出来[b]。 11 现在，从埃及人狂傲地对待以色列人这件事上，我知道耶和华比万神更大。” 12 摩西的岳父叶特罗把燔祭和祭物献给 神。亚伦和以色列的众长老都来了，与摩西的岳父在 神面前吃饭。

13 第二天，摩西坐着审判百姓，百姓从早到晚站在摩西的旁边。 14 摩西的岳父看见他为百姓所做的一切事，就说：“你为百姓所做的，这是什么事呢？你为什么独自一人坐着，而众百姓从早到晚都站在你旁边呢？” 15 摩西对岳父说：“这是因为百姓到我这里来求问 神。 16 他们有事的时候，就到我这里来，我就在双方之间作判决；我又叫他们知道 神的律例和法度。” 17 摩西的岳父对他说：“你这样做不好。 18 你和这些与你在一起的百姓都必疲惫，因为这事太重，你独自一人做不了。 19 现在，听我的话，我给你出个主意，愿 神与你同在。你要代替百姓到 神面前，将事件带到 神那里， 20 又要用律例和法度警戒他们，指示他们当行的道，当做的事。 21 你也要从百姓中选出有才能的人，敬畏 神、诚实可靠、恨恶不义之财的人，派他们作千夫长、百夫长、五十夫长、十夫长来管理百姓。 22 他们要随时审判百姓；重大的事要送到你这里，小事就由他们自行判决。这样，你就可以轻省一些，他们可以与你分担。 23 你若这样做， 神也这样吩咐你，你就能承受得住，众百姓也可以和睦地回到自己的地方。”
24 摩西听了他岳父的话，照着他所说的一切去做。 25 摩西从以色列人中选出有才能的人，立他们为百姓的领袖，作千夫长、百夫长、五十夫长、十夫长。 26 他们随时审判百姓：难断的事就送到摩西那里，各样小事就由他们自行判决。 27 于是，摩西给他的岳父送行，他就回到本地去了。

Jethro’s Advice(A)
18 And (B)Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that (C)God had done for Moses and for Israel His people—that the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took (D)Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back, 3 with her (E)two sons, of whom the name of one was [a]Gershom (for he said, (F)“I have been a [b]stranger in a foreign land”) 4 and the name of the other was [c]Eliezer (for he said, “The God of my father was my (G)help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”); 5 and Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped at (H)the mountain of God. 6 Now he had said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.”
7 So Moses (I)went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down, and (J)kissed him. And they asked each other about their well-being, and they went into the tent. 8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had come upon them on the way, and how the Lord had (K)delivered them. 9 Then Jethro rejoiced for all the (L)good which the Lord had done for Israel, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians. 10 And Jethro said, (M)“Blessed be the Lord, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, and who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that the Lord is (N)greater than all the gods; (O)for in the very thing in which they [d]behaved (P)proudly, He was above them.” 12 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, [e]took a burnt (Q)offering and other sacrifices to offer to God. And Aaron came with all the elders of Israel (R)to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.
13 And so it was, on the next day, that Moses (S)sat to judge the people; and the people stood before Moses from morning until evening. 14 So when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone [f]sit, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?”
15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because (T)the people come to me to inquire of God. 16 When they have (U)a [g]difficulty, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God and His laws.”
17 So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good. 18 Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; (V)you are not able to perform it by yourself. 19 Listen now to my voice; I will give you [h]counsel, and God will be with you: Stand (W)before God for the people, so that you may (X)bring the difficulties to God. 20 And you shall (Y)teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and (Z)the work they must do. 21 Moreover you shall select from all the people (AA)able men, such as (AB)fear God, (AC)men of truth, (AD)hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 22 And let them judge the people at all times. (AE)Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for (AF)they will bear the burden with you. 23 If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their (AG)place in peace.”
24 So Moses heeded the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. 25 And (AH)Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 26 So they judged the people at all times; the (AI)hard[i] cases they brought to Moses, but they judged every small case themselves.
27 Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and (AJ)he went his way to his own land.
