7 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: «Mira, Yo te hago como Dios(A) para Faraón, y tu hermano Aarón será tu profeta. 2 Tú hablarás todo lo que Yo te mande, y Aarón tu hermano hablará(B) a Faraón, para que deje salir de su tierra a los israelitas. 3 Pero Yo endureceré el corazón de Faraón(C) para multiplicar Mis señales y Mis prodigios[a] en la tierra de Egipto(D). 4 Y Faraón no los escuchará. Entonces pondré Mi mano sobre Egipto(E) y sacaré de la tierra de Egipto a Mis ejércitos(F), a Mi pueblo los israelitas, con grandes juicios(G). 5 Los egipcios sabrán que Yo soy el Señor, cuando Yo extienda Mi mano sobre Egipto(H) y saque de en medio de ellos a los israelitas(I)».

6 Así hizo Moisés y también Aarón. Tal como el Señor les mandó(J), así lo hicieron. 7 Moisés tenía 80 años(K) y Aarón 83 cuando hablaron a Faraón.

La vara de Aarón

8 El Señor habló a Moisés y a Aarón y les dijo: 9 «Cuando Faraón, les diga: “Hagan[b] un milagro(L)”, entonces dirás a Aarón: “Toma tu vara(M) y échala delante de Faraón para que se convierta en serpiente”». 10 Vinieron, pues, Moisés y Aarón a Faraón e hicieron tal como el Señor les había mandado. Aarón echó su vara delante de Faraón y de[c] sus siervos, y esta se convirtió en serpiente(N).

11 Entonces Faraón llamó también a los sabios y a los hechiceros, y también ellos, los magos[d](O) de Egipto, hicieron lo mismo con sus encantamientos[e](P). 12 Cada uno echó su vara, las cuales se convirtieron en serpientes. Pero la vara de Aarón devoró las varas de ellos. 13 Sin embargo el corazón de Faraón se endureció[f] y no los escuchó, tal como el Señor había dicho(Q).

Primera plaga: el agua convertida en sangre

14 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: «El corazón de Faraón es terco[g]. Se niega a dejar ir al pueblo. 15 Preséntate[h] a Faraón por la mañana cuando vaya[i] al agua, y ponte a orillas del Nilo(R) para encontrarte con él. Toma en tu mano la vara que se convirtió en serpiente(S). 16 Y dile: “El Señor, el Dios de los hebreos, me ha enviado a ti(T), diciendo: ‘Deja ir a Mi pueblo para que me sirva en el desierto(U). Pero hasta ahora no has escuchado’. 17 Así dice el Señor: ‘En esto conocerás que Yo soy el Señor(V): Yo golpearé con la vara que está en mi mano las[j] aguas que están en el Nilo, y se convertirán en sangre(W). 18 Los peces que hay en el Nilo morirán, y el río se corromperá[k] y los egipcios tendrán asco de[l] beber el agua del Nilo(X)’”».

19 El Señor dijo también a Moisés: «Dile a Aarón: “Toma tu vara y extiende tu mano sobre las aguas de Egipto(Y), sobre sus ríos, sobre sus arroyos[m], sobre sus estanques, y sobre todos sus depósitos de agua, para que se conviertan en sangre. Habrá sangre por toda la tierra de Egipto, tanto en las vasijas de madera como en las de piedra”».

20 Así lo hicieron Moisés y Aarón, tal como el Señor les había ordenado(Z). Aarón alzó la[n] vara y golpeó las aguas que había en el Nilo ante los ojos de Faraón y[o] de sus siervos, y todas las aguas que había en el Nilo se convirtieron en sangre(AA). 21 Los peces que había en el Nilo murieron y el río se corrompió[p], de manera que los egipcios no podían beber agua del Nilo. Había sangre por toda la tierra de Egipto.

22 Pero los magos[q] de Egipto hicieron lo mismo con sus encantamientos[r](AB). El corazón de Faraón se endureció[s] y no los escuchó, tal como el Señor había dicho. 23 Entonces se volvió Faraón y entró en su casa, sin hacer caso tampoco de esto[t]. 24 Todos los egipcios cavaron en los alrededores del Nilo en busca de agua para beber, porque no podían beber de las aguas del Nilo. 25 Pasaron[u] siete días después que el Señor hirió al Nilo.

7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God(A) to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.(B) 2 You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart,(C) and though I multiply my signs and wonders(D) in Egypt, 4 he will not listen(E) to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment(F) I will bring out my divisions,(G) my people the Israelites. 5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord(H) when I stretch out my hand(I) against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it.”

6 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded(J) them. 7 Moses was eighty years old(K) and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Aaron’s Staff Becomes a Snake

8 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Perform a miracle,(L)’ then say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a snake.”(M)

10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. 11 Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers,(N) and the Egyptian magicians(O) also did the same things by their secret arts:(P) 12 Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 Yet Pharaoh’s heart(Q) became hard and he would not listen(R) to them, just as the Lord had said.

The Plague of Blood

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is unyielding;(S) he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes out to the river.(T) Confront him on the bank of the Nile,(U) and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a snake. 16 Then say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to say to you: Let my people go, so that they may worship(V) me in the wilderness. But until now you have not listened.(W) 17 This is what the Lord says: By this you will know that I am the Lord:(X) With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood.(Y) 18 The fish in the Nile will die, and the river will stink;(Z) the Egyptians will not be able to drink its water.’”(AA)

19 The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff(AB) and stretch out your hand(AC) over the waters of Egypt—over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs—and they will turn to blood.’ Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in vessels[a] of wood and stone.”

20 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord had commanded.(AD) He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile,(AE) and all the water was changed into blood.(AF) 21 The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt.

22 But the Egyptian magicians(AG) did the same things by their secret arts,(AH) and Pharaoh’s heart(AI) became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said. 23 Instead, he turned and went into his palace, and did not take even this to heart. 24 And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile to get drinking water(AJ), because they could not drink the water of the river.

The Plague of Frogs

25 Seven days passed after the Lord struck the Nile.

Moses Before Pharaoh

7 So the Lord said to Moses: “See, I have made you (A)as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be (B)your prophet. 2 You (C)shall speak all that I command you. And Aaron your brother shall tell Pharaoh to send the children of Israel out of his land. 3 And (D)I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and (E)multiply My (F)signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt. 4 But (G)Pharaoh will not heed you, so (H)that I may lay My hand on Egypt and bring My [a]armies and My people, the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt (I)by great judgments. 5 And the Egyptians (J)shall know that I am the Lord, when I (K)stretch out My hand on Egypt and (L)bring out the children of Israel from among them.”

6 Then Moses and Aaron (M)did so; just as the Lord commanded them, so they did. 7 And Moses was (N)eighty years old and (O)Aaron eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.

Aaron’s Miraculous Rod(P)

8 Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 9 “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, (Q)‘Show a miracle for yourselves,’ then you shall say to Aaron, (R)‘Take your rod and cast it before Pharaoh, and let it become a serpent.’ ” 10 So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, just (S)as the Lord commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it (T)became a serpent.

11 But Pharaoh also (U)called the wise men and (V)the [b]sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also (W)did in like manner with their [c]enchantments. 12 For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods. 13 And Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the Lord had said.

The First Plague: Waters Become Blood

14 So the Lord said to Moses: (X)“Pharaoh’s heart is hard; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning, when he goes out to the (Y)water, and you shall stand by the river’s bank to meet him; and (Z)the rod which was turned to a serpent you shall take in your hand. 16 And you shall say to him, (AA)‘The Lord God of the Hebrews has sent me to you, saying, “Let My people go, (AB)that they may [d]serve Me in the wilderness”; but indeed, until now you would not hear! 17 Thus says the Lord: “By this (AC)you shall know that I am the Lord. Behold, I will strike the waters which are in the river with the rod that is in my hand, and (AD)they shall be turned (AE)to blood. 18 And the fish that are in the river shall die, the river shall stink, and the Egyptians will (AF)loathe[e] to drink the water of the river.” ’ ”

19 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and (AG)stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their streams, over their rivers, over their ponds, and over all their pools of water, that they may become blood. And there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in buckets of wood and pitchers of stone.’ ” 20 And Moses and Aaron did so, just as the Lord commanded. So he (AH)lifted up the rod and struck the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants. And all the (AI)waters that were in the river were turned to blood. 21 The fish that were in the river died, the river stank, and the Egyptians (AJ)could not drink the water of the river. So there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.

22 (AK)Then the magicians of Egypt did (AL)so with their [f]enchantments; and Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, (AM)as the Lord had said. 23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house. Neither was his heart moved by this. 24 So all the Egyptians dug all around the river for water to drink, because they could not drink the water of the river. 25 And seven days passed after the Lord had struck the river.
