33 耶和華對摩西說：「我曾向亞伯拉罕、以撒和雅各起誓，應許把迦南賜給他們的後代。現在你和你從埃及領出來的百姓要動身去那裡。 2 我必差遣天使走在你們前面，趕出當地的迦南人、亞摩利人、赫人、比利洗人、希未人和耶布斯人， 3 帶你們進入那奶蜜之鄉。但我不會跟你們一起去，免得我在途中就把你們滅絕了，因為你們是頑固不化的百姓。」
4 百姓聽見這壞消息，都非常哀傷，不再佩戴飾物了。 5 耶和華對摩西說：「你去向以色列百姓宣佈，『你們這些頑固不化的人，我就是跟你們在一起待一刻，都恐怕會滅絕你們。現在你們要摘下自己身上的飾物，我再決定怎樣處置你們。』」 6 因此，以色列百姓從何烈山開始就不再佩戴飾物了。
耶和華的會幕
7 摩西通常把帳幕支搭在營外離百姓較遠的地方，摩西稱帳幕為會幕。凡求問耶和華的，都會去那裡。 8 當摩西離營去會幕的時候，百姓就都一同起來，各人站在自己的帳篷門口目送摩西走進會幕。 9 摩西進入會幕後，便有雲柱降下來，停在會幕門口，耶和華就跟摩西說話。 10 每當百姓看見這景象，他們都站在自己的帳篷門口敬拜耶和華。 11 在會幕內，耶和華跟摩西面對面說話，好像兩個朋友談話一樣。然後，摩西返回營中，但他的年輕助手、嫩的兒子約書亞仍然留在會幕。
耶和華的榮耀
12 摩西對耶和華說：「你吩咐我帶領這些百姓，卻沒有告訴我你將要派誰與我同去，只說，『我憑名字認識你，你在我面前蒙了恩。』 13 我若已經在你面前蒙恩，就求你把你的道路指示我，好讓我認識你，繼續在你面前蒙恩。求你顧念這些百姓是你的子民。」 14 耶和華回答他說：「我必親自與你同去，使你平安穩妥。」 15 摩西說：「你若不與我們同去，就不要讓我們離開這裡。 16 你若不與我們同去，誰會知道我和你的子民在你面前蒙了恩呢？豈不是因為你的同在才使我們不同於地上其他民族嗎？」
17 耶和華回答說：「我答應你的請求，因為你在我面前蒙了恩，我憑名字認識你。」 18 摩西說：「求你向我彰顯你的榮耀。」 19 耶和華說：「我必叫你看見我一切的美善，我要在你面前宣告我的名——耶和華，我要恩待誰就恩待誰，我要憐憫誰就憐憫誰。 20 但你不能看我的臉，因為凡看見的，都不能存活。 21 你要站在我旁邊的磐石上， 22 我的榮耀經過你面前的時候，我會先把你安置在石縫裡，用我的手遮掩你，直到我從你面前走過。 23 然後我會收回我的手，你就可以看見我的背，但看不到我的臉。」

33 L'Éternel dit à Moïse: Va, pars d'ici, toi et le peuple que tu as fait sortir du pays d'Égypte; monte vers le pays que j'ai juré de donner à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, en disant: Je le donnerai à ta postérité.
2 J'enverrai devant toi un ange, et je chasserai les Cananéens, les Amoréens, les Héthiens, les Phéréziens, les Héviens et les Jébusiens.
3 Monte vers ce pays où coulent le lait et le miel. Mais je ne monterai point au milieu de toi, de peur que je ne te consume en chemin, car tu es un peuple au cou roide.
4 Lorsque le peuple eut entendu ces sinistres paroles, il fut dans la désolation, et personne ne mit ses ornements.
5 Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Dis aux enfants d'Israël: Vous êtes un peuple au cou roide; si je montais un seul instant au milieu de toi, je te consumerais. Ote maintenant tes ornements de dessus toi, et je verrai ce que je te ferai.
6 Les enfants d'Israël se dépouillèrent de leurs ornements, en s'éloignant du mont Horeb.
7 Moïse prit la tente et la dressa hors du camp, à quelque distance; il l'appela tente d'assignation; et tous ceux qui consultaient l'Éternel allaient vers la tente d'assignation, qui était hors du camp.
8 Lorsque Moïse se rendait à la tente, tout le peuple se levait; chacun se tenait à l'entrée de sa tente, et suivait des yeux Moïse, jusqu'à ce qu'il fût entré dans la tente.
9 Et lorsque Moïse était entré dans la tente, la colonne de nuée descendait et s'arrêtait à l'entrée de la tente, et l'Éternel parlait avec Moïse.
10 Tout le peuple voyait la colonne de nuée qui s'arrêtait à l'entrée de la tente, tout le peuple se levait et se prosternait à l'entrée de sa tente.
11 L'Éternel parlait avec Moïse face à face, comme un homme parle à son ami. Puis Moïse retournait au camp; mais son jeune serviteur, Josué, fils de Nun, ne sortait pas du milieu de la tente.
12 Moïse dit à l'Éternel: Voici, tu me dis: Fais monter ce peuple! Et tu ne me fais pas connaître qui tu enverras avec moi. Cependant, tu as dit: Je te connais par ton nom, et tu as trouvé grâce à mes yeux.
13 Maintenant, si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, fais-moi connaître tes voies; alors je te connaîtrai, et je trouverai encore grâce à tes yeux. Considère que cette nation est ton peuple.
14 L'Éternel répondit: Je marcherai moi-même avec toi, et je te donnerai du repos.
15 Moïse lui dit: Si tu ne marches pas toi-même avec nous, ne nous fais point partir d'ici.
16 Comment sera-t-il donc certain que j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, moi et ton peuple? Ne sera-ce pas quand tu marcheras avec nous, et quand nous serons distingués, moi et ton peuple, de tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre?
17 L'Éternel dit à Moïse: Je ferai ce que tu me demandes, car tu as trouvé grâce à mes yeux, et je te connais par ton nom.
18 Moïse dit: Fais-moi voir ta gloire!
19 L'Éternel répondit: Je ferai passer devant toi toute ma bonté, et je proclamerai devant toi le nom de l'Éternel; je fais grâce à qui je fais grâce, et miséricorde à qui je fais miséricorde.
20 L'Éternel dit: Tu ne pourras pas voir ma face, car l'homme ne peut me voir et vivre.
21 L'Éternel dit: Voici un lieu près de moi; tu te tiendras sur le rocher.
22 Quand ma gloire passera, je te mettrai dans un creux du rocher, et je te couvrirai de ma main jusqu'à ce que j'aie passé.

33 Then the Lord said to Moses, “You and the people you brought out of Egypt must ·leave [L go up from] this place. Go to the land that I promised with an oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give that land to your ·descendants [L seed; Gen. 12:1–3].’ 2 I will send an ·angel [or messenger] ·to lead [L before] you, and I will ·force [drive] these people out of the land: the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. 3 Go up to a ·fertile land [L land flowing with milk and honey; 3:8]. But I will not go with you, because I might ·destroy [consume] you on the way, since you are such a ·stubborn people [stiff-necked people].”
4 When the people heard this bad news, they ·became very sad [mourned], and none of them put on ·jewelry [ornaments; or festive dress]. 5 This was because the Lord had said to Moses, “Tell the ·Israelites [L sons/T children of Israel], ‘You are a ·stubborn [L stiff-necked] people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I would destroy you. So take off all your ·jewelry [ornaments; or festive dress], and I will decide what to do with you.’” 6 So the ·people [L sons; children] of Israel ·took [stripped] off their ·jewelry [ormanents; or festive dress] at Mount ·Sinai [L Horeb; 3:1].
The Meeting Tent
7 Moses used to take a tent and ·set it up [pitch it] a long way outside the camp; he called it the “Meeting Tent.” Anyone who wanted to ·ask [seek] the Lord about something would go to the Meeting Tent outside the camp. 8 Whenever Moses went out to the Tent, all the people would rise and stand at the entrances of their tents, watching him until he entered the ·Meeting Tent [L Tent]. 9 When Moses went into the Tent, the pillar of cloud [13:21–22] would always come down and stay at the entrance of the Tent while the Lord spoke with Moses. 10 Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud at the entrance of the Tent, they stood and worshiped, each person at the entrance of his own tent.
11 The Lord spoke to Moses face to face as a man speaks with his friend [Num. 12:6–8]. Then Moses would return to the camp, but Moses’ young ·helper [assistant], Joshua son of Nun, did not leave the Tent.
12 Moses said to the Lord, “You have told me to ·lead [L bring up] these people, but you did not say whom you would send with me. You have said to me, ‘I know you ·very well [L by name], and ·I am pleased with you [L you have found favor in my eyes].’ 13 If I have ·truly pleased you [L found favor in your eyes], show me your ·plans [path; way] so that I may know you and continue to ·please you [L find favor/grace in your eyes]. ·Remember [Consider] that this nation is your people.”
14 The Lord answered, “·I myself [L My presence] will go with you, and I will give you ·victory [or rest].”
15 Then Moses said to him, “If ·you yourself don’t [L your presence does not] go with us, then don’t send us ·away [up] from this place. 16 ·If you don’t go with us, no one will know [L How else will it be known…?] that ·you are pleased with me [L I have found favor in your eyes] and with your people. These people and I will be no different from any other people on earth.”
17 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will do what you ask, because I know you ·very well [L by name], and ·I am pleased with you [L you have found favor/grace in my eyes].”
Moses Sees God’s Glory
18 Then Moses said, “Now, please show me your glory [C his manifest presence].”
19 The Lord answered, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will announce my name, the Lord, so you can hear it. I will show ·kindness [favor] to anyone to whom I want to show ·kindness [favor], and I will show ·mercy [compassion] to anyone to whom I want to show ·mercy [compassion]. 20 But you cannot see my face, because no one can see me and live.
21 “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22 When my glory passes that place, I will put you in a large ·crack [fissure; T cleft] in the rock and ·cover [screen] you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will ·take away [remove] my hand, and you will see my back. But my face must not be seen.”

33 And the Lord said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:
2 And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
3 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.
4 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.
5 For the Lord had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.
7 And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the Lord went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
8 And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.
9 And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses.
10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
11 And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.
12 And Moses said unto the Lord, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.
13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
15 And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
17 And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21 And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
