17 以色列全体会众都照着耶和华的吩咐,一站一站,从汛的旷野起程,在利非订安营。在那里人民没有水喝。 2 因此人民与摩西争吵,说:“给我们水喝吧。”摩西对他们说:“你们为甚么与我争吵呢?你们为甚么试探耶和华呢?” 3 人民在那里渴望得水喝,就向摩西发怨言,说:“你为甚么把我们从埃及领上来,使我们和我们的儿女,以及我们的牲畜都渴死呢?” 4 摩西向耶和华呼求,说:“我要怎样对待这人民呢?他们几乎要用石头打死我了。” 5 耶和华回答摩西:“你要到人民的面前,要带着以色列的几个长老和你一起,手里要拿着你先前击打河水的杖。 6 看哪,我必在何烈山那里的盘石上站在你面前;你要击打盘石,就必有水从盘石流出来,使人民可以喝。”摩西就在以色列的长老眼前这样行了。 7 他给那地方起名叫玛撒,又叫米利巴,因为以色列人在那里争吵,又因为他们试探耶和华,说:“耶和华是不是在我们中间呢?”
与亚玛力人作战
8 那时亚玛力人来了,在利非订和以色列人争战。 9 摩西对约书亚说:“你要为我们选出人来,出去和亚玛力人争战;明天我要站在山顶上,手里拿着 神的杖。” 10 于是,约书亚照着摩西吩咐他的行了,去和亚玛力人争战;摩西、亚伦和户珥都上了山顶。 11 摩西举起手来的时候,以色列人就得胜;摩西把手放下来的时候,亚玛力人就得胜。 12 可是摩西的两手疲乏了,他们就搬块石头来,放在摩西下面,他就坐在上面;亚伦和户珥,一边一个,扶着摩西的两手;这样,他的两手就稳住,直到日落的时候。 13 约书亚用刀打败了亚玛力王和他的人民。
14 耶和华对摩西说:“我要把亚玛力的名号从天下完全抹掉;你要把话写在书上作记念,也要告诉约书亚。” 15 摩西筑了一座祭坛,给它起名叫“耶和华尼西”。 16 摩西又说:“向耶和华的旌旗举手,耶和华必世世代代和亚玛力人争战。”

Water From the Rock
17 The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin,(A) traveling from place to place as the Lord commanded. They camped at Rephidim,(B) but there was no water(C) for the people to drink. 2 So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water(D) to drink.”(E)
Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”(F)
3 But the people were thirsty(G) for water there, and they grumbled(H) against Moses. They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die(I) of thirst?”
4 Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone(J) me.”
5 The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff(K) with which you struck the Nile,(L) and go. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.(M) Strike(N) the rock, and water(O) will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah[a](P) and Meribah[b](Q) because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
The Amalekites Defeated
8 The Amalekites(R) came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.(S) 9 Moses said to Joshua,(T) “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff(U) of God in my hands.”
10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur(V) went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning,(W) but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.(X) 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite(Y) army with the sword.
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write(Z) this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out(AA) the name of Amalek(AB) from under heaven.”
15 Moses built an altar(AC) and called(AD) it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, “Because hands were lifted up against[c] the throne of the Lord,[d] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites(AE) from generation to generation.”(AF)
