以色列人受欺壓
1 以色列的眾子帶著家眷跟雅各[a]一起去了埃及，以下是他們的名字： 2 呂便、西緬、利未、猶大、 3 以薩迦、西布倫、便雅憫、 4 但、拿弗他利、迦得、亞設。 5 雅各的子孫總共有七十人。那時，約瑟已經住在埃及。 6 後來，約瑟和他的弟兄以及同輩的人都相繼去世。 7 以色列人生養眾多，人口大增，很快就遍佈埃及，成為一個強大的民族。 8 那時，埃及有一位不認識約瑟的新王登基， 9 對他的百姓說：「你們看，以色列人比我們多，又比我們強。 10 來吧！我們要設法阻止他們人口增長，否則一遇到戰爭，他們便會加入我們敵人的陣營來攻打我們，然後一走了之。」
11 於是，埃及人派監工強迫以色列人服勞役，在比東和蘭塞兩地為法老興建儲貨城。 12 以色列人越受奴役，人口增長得越快，散居的範圍也越廣，令埃及人感到恐懼。 13 於是，埃及人更殘酷地奴役他們， 14 強迫他們和泥造磚，並做田間一切的苦工，使他們痛苦不堪。 15 埃及王又命令兩個希伯來的接生婆施弗拉和普阿： 16 「你們在替希伯來婦女接生的時候，如果看到生下的是男嬰，就把他殺掉；如果是女嬰，就讓她活下來。」 17 但這兩個接生婆敬畏上帝，沒有執行王的命令，而是保留了男嬰的性命。 18 埃及王召見那兩個接生婆，質問她們：「你們為什麼這樣做？為什麼讓男嬰活著？」 19 她們回答說：「因為希伯來婦女跟埃及婦女不同。她們身體強健，我們還沒有趕到，嬰兒就生下來了。」 20-21 因此，以色列人口繼續增加，更加繁盛。因為這兩個接生婆敬畏上帝，上帝便賜福給她們，使她們生兒育女。 22 後來，法老命令全埃及的人把以色列人生的所有男嬰都拋進尼羅河裡，只讓女嬰活著。

Origen de Israel como pueblo
1 Estos son los nombres de los israelitas que llegaron a Egipto con Jacob, cada uno con su familia: 2 Rubén, Simeón, Leví, Judá, 3 Isacar, Zabulón, Benjamín, 4 Dan, Neftalí, Gad y Aser. 5 Los descendientes de Jacob eran en total setenta personas, incluyendo a José, que ya estaba en Egipto.
6 José murió y también sus hermanos y toda aquella generación. 7 Como los israelitas eran fecundos, se multiplicaron sobremanera, se hicieron fuertes y llenaron el país.

8 Subió por entonces al trono de Egipto un nuevo rey, que no había conocido a José, 9 y dijo a su pueblo:
— ¡Daos cuenta de que los israelitas se están multiplicando y haciéndose más fuertes que nosotros!
10 Actuemos sabiamente respecto a ellos, no sea que sigan multiplicándose y, en caso de guerra, se pongan del lado de nuestros enemigos, luchen contra nosotros y se marchen del país.
11 Entonces les impusieron capataces que los sometían a trabajos muy duros. Y así fue cómo construyeron para el faraón las ciudades de almacenamiento de Pitón y Ramsés. 12 Pero cuanto más los oprimían, más crecían y se extendían, hasta el punto que los egipcios empezaron a considerarlos un serio problema. 13 Por eso, los egipcios sometieron a los israelitas a una cruel esclavitud. 14 Les hicieron la vida insoportable con trabajos rudos: hacer barro, fabricar adobes, y toda clase de labores del campo. Todos estos trabajos se los impusieron con malos tratos.
15 Además, el rey de Egipto habló con Fuá y Sifrá, comadronas de las hebreas, 16 y les dijo:
— Cuando asistáis a las hebreas en sus partos, prestad atención al sexo del recién nacido; si es niño, matadlo; si es niña, dejadla vivir.
17 Pero las comadronas desatendieron, por respeto a Dios, la orden dada por el rey de Egipto, y dejaron vivir también a los niños. 18 Entonces el rey de Egipto las mandó llamar y les preguntó:
— ¿Por qué habéis actuado así? ¿Por qué habéis dejado con vida a los niños?
19 Ellas le respondieron:
— Porque las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias; son como animales salvajes y dan a luz antes de que llegue la comadrona.
20 Por eso Dios premió a las comadronas. El pueblo siguió creciendo y haciéndose cada vez más poderoso; 21 en cuanto a las comadronas que habían sido fieles a Dios, fueron agraciadas con una familia numerosa. 22 Entonces el faraón ordenó a todo su pueblo:
— Arrojad al río a todos los niños hebreos que nazcan; a las niñas dejadlas vivir.

Jacob’s Family Grows Strong
1 When Jacob went to Egypt, he took his sons, and ·each son took his own family [L …their households] with him. These are the names of the sons of Israel: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, 3 Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin, 4 Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 5 There was a total of seventy people who ·were descendants [L came out of the loins/thigh] of Jacob [Gen. 46:26–27]. Jacob’s son Joseph was already in Egypt.
6 Some time later, Joseph and his brothers died, along with all ·the people who had lived at that same time [L that generation]. 7 But the ·people [L sons; children] of Israel ·had many children [L were fruitful], and ·their number grew greatly [L they became a teeming swarm and multiplied]. They became very strong, and the ·country of Egypt [L land] was filled with them [Gen. 1:28].
Trouble for the People of Israel
8 Then a new king ·began to rule [L rose over] Egypt, who did not know who Joseph was [C identification uncertain; may refer to Ahmose in 16th century bc]. 9 ·This king [L He] said to his people, “Look! The people of Israel are too many and ·too strong for us to handle [L stronger than us]! 10 If we don’t ·make plans against [deal wisely/shrewdly with] them, the number of their people will grow even more. Then if there is a war, they might join ·our enemies [L those who hate us] and fight us and ·escape [L go up] from the country!”
11 So ·the Egyptians made life hard for the Israelites [L they afflicted/oppressed them with hard labor]. They put slave masters over them, who forced the Israelites to build the cities Pithom and Rameses as ·supply centers [storage cities] for ·the king [L Pharaoh]. 12 But the harder ·the Egyptians forced the Israelites to work [L they afflicted/oppressed them], the more ·the Israelites grew in number [they multiplied] and spread out. So ·the Egyptians became very afraid of them [L they dreaded the sons/T children of Israel] 13 and ·demanded even more of them [L the Egyptians ruthlessly forced the sons/T children of Israel to labor]. 14 They made their lives ·bitter [miserable]. They forced the Israelites to work hard to make bricks and mortar and to do all kinds of work in the fields. ·The Egyptians were not merciful to them in all their painful work [L They ruthlessly forced them to work].
15 Two Hebrew ·nurses [midwives] named Shiphrah and Puah were told by the king [C not the Pharaoh of 1:8; perhaps fifteenth or thirteenth century bc—if the latter, probably Rameses], 16 “When you ·are helping the Hebrew women give birth to their babies [act as midwives for the Hebrew women], ·watch [observe them on the birthstool; or look at the stones; C a euphemism for testicles]! If the baby is a girl, let her live, but if it is a boy, kill him!” 17 But the ·nurses [midwives] feared God, so they did not do as the king [L of Egypt] told them; they let all the boy babies live. 18 Then the king of Egypt sent for the ·nurses [midwives] and said, “Why did you do this? Why did you let the boys live?”
19 The ·nurses [midwives] said to ·him [L Pharaoh], “The Hebrew women are ·much stronger than [L not like] the Egyptian women. They are ·strong [vigorous; hardy]. They give birth to their babies before we can get there.” 20 God ·was good [showed favor] to the ·nurses [midwives]. And the Hebrew people continued to grow in number, so they became even stronger. 21 Because the ·nurses [midwives] feared God [Prov. 1:7], he gave them families of their own.
22 So ·the king [L Pharaoh] commanded all his people, “Every time a boy is born to the Hebrews, you must throw him into the Nile River, but let all the girl babies live.”

The Israelites Oppressed
1 These are the names of the sons of Israel(A) who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah; 3 Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin; 4 Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.(B) 5 The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy[a] in all;(C) Joseph was already in Egypt.
6 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died,(D) 7 but the Israelites were exceedingly fruitful; they multiplied greatly, increased in numbers(E) and became so numerous that the land was filled with them.
8 Then a new king, to whom Joseph meant nothing, came to power in Egypt.(F) 9 “Look,” he said to his people, “the Israelites have become far too numerous(G) for us.(H) 10 Come, we must deal shrewdly(I) with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country.”(J)
11 So they put slave masters(K) over them to oppress them with forced labor,(L) and they built Pithom and Rameses(M) as store cities(N) for Pharaoh. 12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites 13 and worked them ruthlessly.(O) 14 They made their lives bitter with harsh labor(P) in brick(Q) and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.(R)
15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives,(S) whose names were Shiphrah and Puah, 16 “When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.”(T) 17 The midwives, however, feared(U) God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do;(V) they let the boys live. 18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?”
19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.”(W)
20 So God was kind to the midwives(X) and the people increased and became even more numerous. 21 And because the midwives feared(Y) God, he gave them families(Z) of their own.
22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile,(AA) but let every girl live.”(AB)
