Phia-rơ và Giăng trước mặt Hội Đồng
4 Trong khi Phia-rơ và Giăng đang nói chuyện với dân chúng thì các thầy tế lễ, sĩ quan chỉ huy toán lính canh gác đền thờ và các người Xa-đu-xê ập đến. 2 Họ bực mình vì hai sứ đồ giảng dạy dân chúng rằng Chúa Giê-xu đã sống lại từ kẻ chết. 3 Các nhà lãnh đạo Do-thái bắt giam Phia-rơ và Giăng. Vì lúc ấy đã tối, nên họ nhốt hai người trong ngục cho đến hôm sau. 4 Nhưng nhiều người đã nghe Phia-rơ và Giăng giảng thì tin điều hai sứ đồ nói. Lúc ấy có khoảng năm ngàn tín hữu.
5 Hôm sau, các lãnh tụ, các bô lão Do-thái và các giáo sư luật họp lại tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. 6 An-na, thầy tế lễ tối cao, Cai-pha, Giăng và A-lịch-sơn có mặt tại đó cùng với toàn thể gia đình thầy tế lễ tối cao. 7 Họ bắt Phia-rơ và Giăng trình diện và hạch hỏi, “Mấy anh lấy quyền hành nào hay ai cho các anh quyền làm chuyện nầy?”
8 Lúc ấy Phia-rơ cảm nhận Thánh Linh, nói với họ, “Thưa quí vị lãnh đạo dân chúng và các bô lão, 9 có phải quí vị hạch hỏi chúng tôi về việc lành chúng tôi làm cho một người què không? Có phải quí vị muốn biết ai đã chữa lành cho người đó không? 10 Chúng tôi muốn tất cả quí vị và toàn dân Do-thái biết rằng người nầy được chữa lành là nhờ quyền năng của Chúa Giê-xu ở Na-xa-rét. Quí vị đã đóng đinh Ngài nhưng Thượng Đế đã khiến Ngài sống lại từ kẻ chết. Người nầy trước bị què, nhưng nay được lành và đang đứng trước mặt quí vị đây, nhờ quyền năng Chúa Giê-xu. 11 Chúa Giê-xu là
12 Ngoài Chúa Giê-xu ra không ai có thể cứu con người được. Danh Ngài là quyền năng duy nhất trên thế gian đã được ban cho nhân loại để cứu con người. Chúng ta phải nhờ Ngài mới được cứu.”
13 Các nhà lãnh đạo Do-thái thấy Phia-rơ và Giăng ăn nói bạo dạn, họ biết cả hai đều là người tầm thường, không học hành bao nhiêu nên vô cùng kinh ngạc. Họ nhận ra là Phia-rơ và Giăng đã từng ở với Chúa Giê-xu. 14 Vì thấy người được chữa lành đang đứng cạnh hai sứ đồ nên họ không thể bẻ bác gì được. 15 Sau khi các nhà lãnh đạo Do-thái ra lệnh đem hai sứ đồ khỏi phòng họp, họ bắt đầu bàn bạc. 16 Họ bảo, “Chúng ta phải xử trí thế nào với mấy người nầy? Ai ở Giê-ru-sa-lem cũng biết họ đã làm một phép lạ sờ sờ, chúng ta không thể chối cãi. 17 Nhưng để cho tin nầy khỏi lan rộng thêm giữa vòng dân chúng, chúng ta phải cấm họ không được dùng danh ấy giảng cho dân chúng nữa.”
18 Họ cho mang Phia-rơ và Giăng vào và cấm không được nói hay dạy dân chúng về danh Chúa Giê-xu nữa. 19 Nhưng Phia-rơ và Giăng trả lời, “Quí vị hãy xét điều nào Thượng Đế muốn. Chúng tôi nên vâng lời quí vị hay vâng lời Thượng Đế? 20 Vì chúng tôi không thể im lặng mà phải nói ra điều mình đã nghe và thấy.” 21 Các nhà lãnh đạo Do-thái cấm hai sứ đồ lần nữa, rồi thả ra. Họ không biết cách nào để trừng phạt các sứ đồ, vì cả dân chúng đều ca ngợi Thượng Đế về sự việc vừa xảy ra. 22 Người được chữa lành ấy hơn bốn mươi tuổi.
Các tín hữu cầu nguyện
23 Sau khi Phia-rơ và Giăng rời cuộc họp với nhóm lãnh tụ Do-thái, hai người trở về thuật cho các tín hữu khác nghe những gì mà giới trưởng tế và các bô lão Do-thái đã bảo họ. 24 Khi các tín hữu nghe thế, họ đồng tâm cầu nguyện cùng Thượng Đế, “Lạy Chúa, Ngài là Đấng dựng nên trời, đất, biển và mọi vật trong đó. 25 Nhờ Thánh Linh Ngài và qua tổ phụ chúng tôi là Đa-vít, tôi tớ Ngài, Ngài đã phán:
‘Tại sao các dân tức giận?
Tại sao họ lập mưu vô ích?
26 Các vua trên đất chuẩn bị chiến đấu,
các nhà lãnh đạo lập mưu chống lại Chúa
và Đấng Cứu Thế của Ngài.’ (B)
27 Những việc ấy xảy ra khi Hê-rốt, Bôn-ti Phi-lát, những người không phải Do-thái cùng những người Do-thái họp nhau nghịch Chúa Giê-xu tại Giê-ru-sa-lem. Chúa Giê-xu là đầy tớ thánh của Ngài mà Ngài đã lập làm Đấng Cứu Thế. 28 Họ làm cho kế hoạch Ngài được thành tựu do quyền năng và ý muốn Ngài. 29 Bây giờ, lạy Chúa, xin hãy lắng nghe lời hăm dọa của họ. Lạy Chúa, xin giúp tôi tớ Ngài mạnh dạn rao giảng lời Ngài. 30 Xin giúp chúng con can đảm bằng cách tỏ quyền năng chữa trị của Ngài. Xin chứng tỏ và làm nhiều phép lạ do quyền năng [b] Chúa Giê-xu, tôi tớ thánh của Ngài.”
31 Sau khi họ cầu nguyện xong thì nơi họp rung chuyển. Mọi người đều được nhận Thánh Linh và mạnh dạn rao giảng lời Thượng Đế, không sợ hãi gì.
Các tín hữu san sẻ của cải
32 Các tín hữu đều đồng lòng và xem của riêng mình như của chung. Thật ra, họ san sẻ với nhau mọi thứ. 33 Nhờ quyền năng lớn lao, các sứ đồ thuật cho dân chúng biết là Chúa Giê-xu đã thật sống lại từ kẻ chết. Thượng Đế cũng ban phúc lành nhiều cho các tín hữu. 34 Không ai trong nhóm thiếu thốn điều gì. Thỉnh thoảng có người bán ruộng đất hoặc nhà cửa, mang tiền lại, 35 giao cho các sứ đồ. Rồi tiền ấy được phát cho người nào túng thiếu.
36 Có một tín hữu tên Giô-xép, người Lê-vi, sinh ở đảo Chíp. Các sứ đồ gọi ông là Ba-na-ba nghĩa là “người giục giã.” 37 Giô-xép có một thửa ruộng, bán đi rồi mang tiền giao cho các sứ đồ.

Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin
4 The priests and the captain of the temple guard(A) and the Sadducees(B) came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people. 2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people, proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.(C) 3 They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail(D) until the next day. 4 But many who heard the message believed; so the number of men who believed grew(E) to about five thousand.
5 The next day the rulers,(F) the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. 6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas,(G) John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. 7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,(H) said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people!(I) 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame(J) and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,(K) whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead,(L) that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”(N)
13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John(O) and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men,(P) they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.(Q) 14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. 15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin(R) and then conferred together. 16 “What are we going to do with these men?”(S) they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign,(T) and we cannot deny it. 17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.(U) 19 But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him?(V) You be the judges! 20 As for us, we cannot help speaking(W) about what we have seen and heard.”(X)
21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people(Y) were praising God(Z) for what had happened. 22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.
The Believers Pray
23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God.(AA) “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “you made the heavens and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.(AB) 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David:(AC)
“‘Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord
and against his anointed one.[b]’[c](AD)
27 Indeed Herod(AE) and Pontius Pilate(AF) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,(AG) whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.(AH) 29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.(AI) 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders(AJ) through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”(AK)
31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken.(AL) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit(AM) and spoke the word of God(AN) boldly.(AO)
The Believers Share Their Possessions
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.(AP) 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify(AQ) to the resurrection(AR) of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace(AS) was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them,(AT) brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet,(AU) and it was distributed to anyone who had need.(AV)
36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas(AW) (which means “son of encouragement”), 37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles’ feet.(AX)

Peter and John Arrested
4 Now as they were speaking to the people, the priests, the commander of the temple police, and the Sadducees confronted them,(A) 2 because they were provoked that they were teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection from the dead, using Jesus as the example.[a](B) 3 So they seized them and put them in custody until the next day, since it was already evening. 4 But many of those who heard the message believed, and the number of the men came to about 5,000.
Peter and John Face the Jewish Leadership
5 The next day, their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem 6 with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John and Alexander, and all the members of the high-priestly family.[b](C) 7 After they had Peter and John stand before them, they asked the question: “By what power or in what name have you done this?”
8 Then Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders:[c](D) 9 If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a disabled man—by what means he was healed— 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene—whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead—by Him this man is standing here before you healthy.(E) 11 This Jesus is
12 There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people, and we must be saved by it.”(G)
The Name Forbidden
13 When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus.(H) 14 And since they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in response. 15 After they had ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, they conferred among themselves, 16 saying, “What should we do with these men? For an obvious sign, evident to all who live in Jerusalem, has been done through them, and we cannot deny it!(I) 17 However, so this does not spread any further among the people, let’s threaten them against speaking to anyone in this name again.” 18 So they called for them and ordered them not to preach or teach at all in the name of Jesus.
19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it’s right in the sight of God for us to listen to you rather than to God, you decide;(J) 20 for we are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”(K)
21 After threatening them further, they released them. They found no way to punish them, because the people were all giving glory to God over what had been done;(L) 22 for this sign of healing had been performed on a man over 40 years old.
Prayer for Boldness
23 After they were released, they went to their own people and reported everything the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 When they heard this, they all raised their voices to God and said, “Master, You are the One who made the heaven, the earth, and the sea, and everything in them.(M) 25 You said through the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father David Your servant:[f]
Why did the Gentiles rage
and the peoples plot futile things?
26 The kings of the earth took their stand
and the rulers assembled together
against the Lord and against His Messiah.(N)[g]
27 “For, in fact, in this city both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people[h] of Israel, assembled together against Your holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed,(O) 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, consider their threats, and grant that Your slaves may speak Your message with complete boldness,(P) 30 while You stretch out Your hand for healing, signs, and wonders(Q) to be performed through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.” 31 When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak God’s message with boldness.(R)
Believers Sharing
32 Now the large group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one said that any of his possessions was his own, but instead they held everything in common.(S) 33 And the apostles were giving testimony with great power to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was on all of them.(T) 34 For there was not a needy person among them, because all those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds of the things that were sold,(U) 35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet. This was then distributed for each person’s basic needs.[i](V)
36 Joseph, a Levite and a Cypriot by birth, the one the apostles called Barnabas, which is translated Son of Encouragement,(W) 37 sold a field he owned, brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.(X)

4 1 Peter and John, 3 are taken and brought before the council, 7 and 19 They speak boldly in Christ’s cause. 24 The disciples pray unto God. 32 Many sell their possessions. 36 Of whom Barnabas is one.
1 And [a]as they spake unto the people, the Priests and the [b]Captain of the Temple, and the Sadducees came upon them.
2 Taking it grievously that they taught the people, and preached in Jesus’ Name the resurrection from the dead.
3 And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold, until the next day, for it was now eventide.
4 Howbeit many of them which heard the word, believed, and the [c]number of the men was about five thousand.
5 ¶ And it came to pass on the morrow, that their [d]rulers, and Elders, and Scribes, were gathered together at Jerusalem,
6 And Annas the chief Priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the [e]kindred of the high Priest.
7 [f]And when they had set them before them, they asked, By what power, or in what [g]Name have ye done this?
8 Then Peter full of the holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and Elders of Israel,
9 [h]For as much as we this day are examined, of the good deed done to the impotent man, to wit, by what means he is made whole,
10 [i]Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye have crucified, whom God raised again from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you, whole.
11 (A)This is the stone cast aside of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for among men there is [j]given none other [k]Name [l]under heaven, whereby we must be saved.
13 [m]Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and understood that they were unlearned men and without [n]knowledge, they marveled, and knew them, that they had been with Jesus:
14 And beholding also the man which was healed standing with them, they had nothing to say against it.
15 Then they commanded them to go aside out of the Council, and [o]conferred among themselves,
16 [p]Saying, What shall we do to these men? for surely a manifest sign is done by them, and it is openly known to all them that dwell in Jerusalem: and we cannot deny it.
17 But that it be noised no farther among the people, let us threaten and charge them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this Name.
18 So they called them, and commanded them, that in no wise they should speak or teach in the Name of Jesus.
19 [q]But Peter and John answered unto them, and said, Whether it be right in the sight of God, to obey you rather than God, judge ye.
20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
21 [r]So they threatened them, and let them go, and found nothing how to punish them, because of the people: for all men praised God for that which was done.
22 For the man was above forty years old, on whom this miracle of healing was showed.
23 [s]Then as soon as they were let go, they came to their fellows, and showed all that the high Priests and Elders had said unto them.
24 [t]And when they heard it, they lifted up their voices to God with one accord, and said, O Lord, thou art the God which had made the heaven, and the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them.
25 Which by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, (B)Why did the Gentiles rage, and the people imagine vain things?
26 The kings of the earth assembled, and the rulers came together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
27 For doubtless, against thine holy Son Jesus, whom thou hadst anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the [u]people of Israel gathered themselves together.
28 To [v]do whatsoever [w]thine hand, and thy counsel had determined before to be done.
29 And now, O Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants with all boldness to speak thy word,
30 So that thou stretch forth thine hand that healing, and signs, and wonders may be done by the Name of thine holy Son Jesus.
31 [x]And when as they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together, and they were all filled with the holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God boldly.
32 [y]And the multitude of them that believed, were of [z]one heart, and of one soul: neither any of them said, that anything of that which he possessed, was his own, but they had all things (C)common.
33 And with great power gave the Apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
34 [aa]Neither was there any among them, that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses, sold them, and brought the price of the things that were sold,
35 And laid it down at the Apostles’ feet, and it was distributed unto every man, according as he had need.
36 Also Joses which was called of the Apostles, Barnabas (that is by interpretation, the son of consolation) being a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
37 Where as he had land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it down at the Apostles’ feet.
