在帖撒羅尼迦傳道

17 保羅賽拉斯經過安菲波利斯阿波羅尼亞,來到帖撒羅尼迦。那裡有一個猶太人的會堂。 保羅照習慣進了會堂[a],一連三個安息日,引用經文向他們講論, 講解並說明基督必須受難,然後從死人中復活,並且說:「我傳給你們的這位耶穌,就是基督。」 他們當中有些人被說服了,就跟從了保羅賽拉斯;不但有一大群敬神的希臘人,還有不少顯要的婦女。

耶森受逼迫

但那些不肯信從的[b]猶太人嫉妒了,就招聚一些市井無賴,成群結夥,擾亂城市。他們闖進耶森的家,搜尋保羅賽拉斯,要把他們帶到民眾那裡。 可是找不到他們,就把耶森和幾位弟兄拉到地方官們那裡,喊叫說:「這些攪亂天下的,也來到這裡, 耶森竟接待了他們!這些人都違背了凱撒的諭令,說另外有一個王,就是耶穌。」 民眾和地方官們聽了這些話就驚慌不安, 後來,拿了耶森和其他人的保釋金,就把他們釋放了。

庇里亞人查考經文

10 弟兄們立刻連夜送保羅賽拉斯庇里亞城去。兩個人一到,就進了猶太人的會堂。 11 這裡的人比帖撒羅尼迦的人開明。他們滿心樂意地接受這福音[c],天天查考經文,要看這些事是否如此。 12 這樣,他們當中有許多人相信了,包括尊貴的希臘婦女,以及不少男人。 13 可是當帖撒羅尼迦猶太人知道保羅又在庇里亞城傳揚神的話語[d]時,就來到那裡煽動、攪擾[e]民眾。 14 於是弟兄們立刻送保羅往海邊[f]去,賽拉斯提摩太仍然留在庇里亞 15 護送保羅的人一直帶他到了雅典,然後領受了要賽拉斯提摩太盡快到他這裡來的指示,就回去了。

保羅在雅典

16 保羅雅典等候賽拉斯提摩太的時候,看見滿城都是偶像,他靈裡被激怒。 17 於是他在會堂裡向猶太人以及那些敬神的人講論,每天又向在街市上遇見的人講論。 18 有些伊壁鳩魯派和斯多亞派的哲學家們也與他辯論。

有的說:「這胡言亂語的人,究竟想說什麼呢?」也有的說:「他看起來是個宣傳外國鬼神的人。」這是因為保羅傳講耶穌和復活的福音。

19 他們就拉住保羅,帶他到亞略巴古,問他:「你所講論的這新教導,我們可以知道嗎? 20 既然你帶來了一些奇怪的事,傳到我們耳中,那麼我們想知道這些事到底是什麼意思。」 21 原來,所有的雅典人以及在那裡作客的外國人,不做別的,只花時間說說聽聽某個較為新奇的事。

在亞略巴古的講道

22 於是保羅站在亞略巴古當中說:「各位雅典人哪,我看你們在各方面都非常敬畏鬼神, 23 因為我邊走邊觀察你們所敬拜的,發現一座祭壇上刻著『獻給不認識的神』;那麼,我把你們所不認識而敬拜的這一位,現在傳講給你們。 24 造了宇宙和其中萬有的神,這一位既然是天地的主,就不住在人手所造的殿宇裡, 25 也不受人手的服事,好像缺少什麼似的,因為他自己把生命、氣息和萬有賜給萬人。 26 他從一個人[g]造出人類萬族,使他們住在整個地面上,預先設定了他們的年限和所住的疆界, 27 好讓他們尋求神[h],或許因此真能摸索而找到他。其實他離我們每一個人並不遠, 28 因為我們活著、行動、生存,都在於他,正如你們中間的一些詩人也曾經說過,『原來我們也是他的後裔。』 29 所以我們既然是神的後裔,就不應該認為神性是彷彿用人的手藝和心思所雕刻的金、銀、石像。

30 「雖然神並不鑒察那愚昧無知的時代,但如今卻吩咐各處所有的人都要悔改, 31 因為他已經確立了日子,將要藉著他所設定的一個人,以公義來審判天下的人,並且藉著使他從死人中復活,給萬人帶來了確據。」

32 他們聽到死人復活的事,雖然有些人嘲笑他,但有些人卻說:「關於此事,我們還要再聽你說!」 33 這樣,保羅就從他們中間出去了。 34 有一些人就跟從了保羅,信了主[i]。其中包括亞略巴古的議員迪奧尼修、一個名叫達瑪麗斯的婦人,以及其他與他們在一起的人。

Preaching Christ at Thessalonica

17 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to (A)Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. Then Paul, as his custom was, (B)went in to them, and for three Sabbaths (C)reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and demonstrating (D)that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.” (E)And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and (F)Silas.

Assault on Jason’s House

But the Jews [a]who were not persuaded, [b]becoming (G)envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of (H)Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, (I)“These who have turned the world upside down have come here too. Jason has [c]harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, (J)saying there is another king—Jesus.” And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things. So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

Ministering at Berea

10 Then (K)the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more [d]fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and (L)searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 12 Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men. 13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also and stirred up the crowds. 14 (M)Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away, to go to the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there. 15 So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens; and (N)receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed.

The Philosophers at Athens

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, (O)his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was [e]given over to idols. 17 Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there. 18 [f]Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What does this [g]babbler want to say?”

Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them (P)Jesus and the resurrection.

19 And they took him and brought him to the [h]Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak? 20 For you are bringing some strange things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean.” 21 For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

Addressing the Areopagus

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of the [i]Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; 23 for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:

TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.

Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you: 24 (Q)God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is (R)Lord of heaven and earth, (S)does not dwell in temples made with hands. 25 Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He (T)gives to all life, breath, and all things. 26 And He has made from one [j]blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and (U)the boundaries of their dwellings, 27 (V)so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, (W)though He is not far from each one of us; 28 for (X)in Him we live and move and have our being, (Y)as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’ 29 Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, (Z)we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising. 30 Truly, (AA)these times of ignorance God overlooked, but (AB)now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which (AC)He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by (AD)raising Him from the dead.”

32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, “We will hear you again on this matter. 33 So Paul departed from among them. 34 However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

The Uproar in Thessalonica

17 After Paul and Silas[a] had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.(A) And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days argued with them from the scriptures,(B) explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Messiah[b] to suffer and to rise from the dead and saying, “This is the Messiah,[c] Jesus whom I am proclaiming to you.”(C) Some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women.(D) But the Jews became jealous, and with the help of some ruffians in the marketplaces they formed a mob and set the city in an uproar. While they were searching for Paul and Silas to bring them out to the assembly, they attacked Jason’s house.(E) When they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers and sisters before the city authorities, shouting, “These people who have been turning the world upside down have come here also,(F) and Jason has entertained them as guests. They are all acting contrary to the decrees of the emperor, saying that there is another king named Jesus.”(G) The people and the city officials were disturbed when they heard this, and after they had taken bail from Jason and the others, they let them go.

Paul and Silas in Beroea

10 That very night the brothers and sisters sent Paul and Silas off to Beroea, and when they arrived they went to the Jewish synagogue.(H) 11 These Jews were more receptive than those in Thessalonica, for they welcomed the message very eagerly and examined the scriptures every day to see whether these things were so.(I) 12 Many of them therefore believed, including not a few Greek women and men of high standing. 13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in Beroea as well, they came there, too, to stir up and incite the crowds. 14 Then the brothers and sisters immediately sent Paul away to the coast, but Silas and Timothy remained behind. 15 Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens, and, after receiving instructions to have Silas and Timothy join him as soon as possible, they left him.(J)

Paul in Athens

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply distressed to see that the city was full of idols.(K) 17 So he argued in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons and also in the marketplace[d] every day with those who happened to be there. 18 Also some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers debated with him. Some said, “What does this pretentious babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign divinities.” (This was because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.) 19 So they took him and brought him to the Areopagus and asked him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 It sounds rather strange to us, so we would like to know what it means.” 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners living there would spend their time in nothing but telling or hearing something new.

22 Then Paul stood in front of the Areopagus and said, “Athenians, I see how extremely spiritual you are in every way. 23 For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’ What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands,(L) 25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things.(M) 26 From one ancestor[e] he made all peoples to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live,(N) 27 so that they would search for God[f] and perhaps fumble about for him and find him—though indeed he is not far from each one of us.(O) 28 For ‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said,

‘For we, too, are his offspring.’(P)

29 “Since we are God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the deity is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of mortals.(Q) 30 While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent,(R) 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will have the world judged in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”(S)

32 When they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some scoffed, but others said, “We will hear you again about this.” 33 At that point Paul left them. 34 But some of them joined him and became believers, including Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.
