Jesús llevado al cielo
1 Estimado Teófilo, en mi primer libro me referí a todo lo que Jesús comenzó a hacer y enseñar 2 hasta el día en que fue llevado al cielo, luego de darles instrucciones por medio del Espíritu Santo a los apóstoles que había escogido. 3 Después de padecer la muerte, se presentó dándoles muchas pruebas convincentes de que estaba vivo. Durante cuarenta días se les apareció y les habló acerca del reino de Dios. 4 Una vez, mientras comía con ellos, ordenó:
—No se alejen de Jerusalén, sino esperen la promesa del Padre, de la cual les he hablado: 5 Juan bautizó con[a] agua, pero dentro de pocos días ustedes serán bautizados con el Espíritu Santo.
6 Entonces los que estaban reunidos con él preguntaron:
—Señor, ¿es ahora cuando vas a restablecer el reino a Israel?
7 —No les toca a ustedes conocer la hora ni el momento determinados por la autoridad misma del Padre —contestó Jesús—. 8 Pero cuando venga el Espíritu Santo sobre ustedes, recibirán poder y serán mis testigos tanto en Jerusalén como en toda Judea y Samaria, hasta en los confines de la tierra.
9 Habiendo dicho esto, mientras ellos lo miraban, fue llevado a las alturas hasta que una nube lo ocultó de su vista. 10 Ellos se quedaron mirando fijamente al cielo mientras él se alejaba. De repente, se les acercaron dos hombres vestidos de blanco 11 que les dijeron:
—Galileos, ¿qué hacen aquí mirando al cielo? Este mismo Jesús, que ha sido llevado de entre ustedes al cielo, vendrá otra vez de la misma manera que lo han visto irse.
Elección de Matías para reemplazar a Judas
12 Entonces regresaron a Jerusalén desde el monte llamado de los Olivos, situado aproximadamente a un kilómetro de la ciudad.[b] 13 Cuando llegaron, subieron al lugar donde se alojaban. Estaban allí:
Pedro, Juan, Santiago, Andrés,
Felipe, Tomás,
Bartolomé, Mateo,
Santiago, hijo de Alfeo, Simón el Zelote y Judas, hijo de Santiago.
14 Todos, en un mismo espíritu, se dedicaban a la oración, junto con las mujeres, y con los hermanos de Jesús y su madre María.
15 Por aquellos días Pedro se puso de pie en medio de los creyentes,[c] que eran un grupo como de ciento veinte personas, y dijo: 16 «Hermanos, tenía que cumplirse la Escritura que, por boca de David, había predicho el Espíritu Santo en cuanto a Judas, el que sirvió de guía a los que arrestaron a Jesús. 17 Judas se contaba entre los nuestros y participaba en este ministerio.
18 (Con el dinero que obtuvo por su crimen, Judas compró un terreno; allí cayó de cabeza, se reventó y se derramaron sus intestinos. 19 Todos en Jerusalén se enteraron de ello, así que aquel terreno fue llamado Acéldama, que en su propio idioma quiere decir “Campo de Sangre”.)
20 »Porque en el libro de los Salmos —continuó Pedro—, está escrito:
»“Que su campamento quede desierto
y que nadie habite en él”.[d]
También está escrito:
»“Que otro se haga cargo de su oficio”.[e]
21 Por tanto, es preciso que se una a nosotros uno de los que nos acompañaban todo el tiempo que el Señor Jesús vivió entre nosotros, 22 desde que Juan bautizaba hasta el día en que Jesús fue tomado de entre nosotros y recibido en las alturas. Es necesario que uno de ellos sea junto a nosotros testigo de la resurrección».
23 Así que propusieron a dos: a José, llamado Barsabás, apodado el Justo, y a Matías. 24 Y oraron así: «Señor, tú que conoces el corazón de todos, muéstranos a cuál de estos dos has elegido 25 para que se haga cargo del servicio apostólico que Judas dejó para irse al lugar que le correspondía». 26 Luego echaron suertes y la elección recayó en Matías; así que él fue reconocido junto con los once apóstoles.

La promesa del Espíritu Santo
1 En mi primer libro, excelentísimo Teófilo, escribí acerca de todo lo que Jesús había hecho y enseñado desde el principio 2 y hasta el día en que subió al cielo. Antes de irse, por medio del Espíritu Santo dio instrucciones a los apóstoles que había escogido respecto a lo que debían hacer. 3 Y después de muerto se les presentó en persona, dándoles así claras pruebas de que estaba vivo. Durante cuarenta días se dejó ver de ellos y les estuvo hablando del reino de Dios.
4 Cuando todavía estaba con los apóstoles, Jesús les advirtió que no debían irse de Jerusalén. Les dijo:
—Esperen a que se cumpla la promesa que mi Padre les hizo, de la cual yo les hablé. 5 Es cierto que Juan bautizó con agua, pero dentro de pocos días ustedes serán bautizados con el Espíritu Santo.
Jesús sube al cielo
6 Los que estaban reunidos con Jesús, le preguntaron:
—Señor, ¿vas a restablecer en este momento el reino de Israel?
7 Jesús les contestó:
—No les corresponde a ustedes conocer el día o el momento que el Padre ha fijado con su propia autoridad; 8 pero cuando el Espíritu Santo venga sobre ustedes, recibirán poder y saldrán a dar testimonio de mí, en Jerusalén, en toda la región de Judea y de Samaria, y hasta en las partes más lejanas de la tierra.
9 Dicho esto, mientras ellos lo estaban mirando, Jesús fue levantado, y una nube lo envolvió y no lo volvieron a ver. 10 Y mientras miraban fijamente al cielo, viendo cómo Jesús se alejaba, dos hombres vestidos de blanco se aparecieron junto a ellos 11 y les dijeron:
—Galileos, ¿por qué se han quedado mirando al cielo? Este mismo Jesús que estuvo entre ustedes y que ha sido llevado al cielo, vendrá otra vez de la misma manera que lo han visto irse allá.

12 Desde el monte llamado de los Olivos, regresaron los apóstoles a Jerusalén: un trecho corto, precisamente lo que la ley permitía caminar en sábado. 13 Cuando llegaron a la ciudad, subieron al piso alto de la casa donde estaban alojados. Eran Pedro, Juan, Santiago, Andrés, Felipe, Tomás, Bartolomé, Mateo, Santiago hijo de Alfeo, Simón el Celote, y Judas, el hijo de Santiago. 14 Todos ellos se reunían siempre para orar con algunas mujeres, con María, la madre de Jesús, y con sus hermanos.
15 Por aquellos días Pedro se dirigió a los hermanos reunidos, que eran como ciento veinte personas, y les dijo: 16 «Hermanos, tenía que cumplirse lo que el Espíritu Santo, por medio de David, ya había dicho en la Escritura acerca de Judas, el que sirvió de guía a los que arrestaron a Jesús. 17 Pues Judas era uno de los nuestros, y tenía parte en nuestro trabajo. 18 (Pero fue y compró un terreno con el dinero que le pagaron por su maldad; luego cayó de cabeza y se reventó, y se le salieron todos los intestinos. 19 Cuando los que vivían en Jerusalén lo supieron, llamaron a aquel terreno Hacéldama, que en su lengua quiere decir: “Campo de Sangre.”) 20 En efecto, el libro de los Salmos dice:
“Que su casa se vuelva un desierto,
y que nadie viva en ella.”
Y también:
“Que otro ocupe su cargo.”
21 »Tenemos aquí hombres que nos han acompañado todo el tiempo que el Señor Jesús estuvo entre nosotros, 22 desde que fue bautizado por Juan hasta que subió al cielo. Es necesario, pues, que uno de ellos sea agregado a nosotros, para que junto con nosotros dé testimonio de que Jesús resucitó.»
23 Entonces propusieron a dos: a José, llamado Barsabás, y llamado también Justo, y a Matías. 24 Y oraron así: «Señor, tú que conoces los corazones de todos, muéstranos cuál de estos dos has escogido 25 para que tome a su cargo el servicio de apóstol que Judas perdió por su pecado, cuando se fue al lugar que le correspondía.»
26 Lo echaron a la suerte, y ésta favoreció a Matías, quien desde aquel momento quedó agregado a los once apóstoles.

1 Cher Théophile, dans mon premier livre[a], j'ai parlé de tout ce que Jésus a commencé de faire et d'enseigner 2 jusqu'au jour où il a été enlevé au ciel après avoir donné ses ordres, par le Saint-Esprit, aux apôtres qu'il avait choisis. 3 Après avoir souffert, il se présenta à eux vivant et leur en donna de nombreuses preuves: pendant 40 jours, il se montra à eux et parla de ce qui concerne le royaume de Dieu.
4 Alors qu’il se trouvait en leur compagnie, il leur recommanda de ne pas s'éloigner de Jérusalem, mais d'attendre ce que le Père avait promis, «ce que je vous ai annoncé, leur dit-il, 5 car Jean a baptisé d'eau, mais vous, dans peu de jours, vous serez baptisés du Saint-Esprit.» 6 Alors que les apôtres étaient réunis, ils lui demandèrent: «Seigneur, est-ce à ce moment-là que tu rétabliras le royaume pour Israël?» 7 Il leur répondit: «Ce n'est pas à vous de connaître les temps ou les moments que le Père a fixés de sa propre autorité. 8 Mais vous recevrez une puissance lorsque le Saint-Esprit viendra sur vous, et vous serez mes témoins à Jérusalem, dans toute la Judée, dans la Samarie et jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre.»
9 Après avoir dit cela, il s'éleva dans les airs pendant qu'ils le regardaient et une nuée le cacha à leurs yeux. 10 Et comme ils avaient les regards fixés vers le ciel pendant qu'il s'en allait, deux hommes habillés de blanc leur apparurent 11 et dirent: «Hommes de Galilée, pourquoi restez-vous à regarder le ciel? Ce Jésus qui a été enlevé au ciel du milieu de vous reviendra de la même manière que vous l'avez vu aller au ciel.»
12 Alors ils retournèrent à Jérusalem, de la colline appelée mont des Oliviers qui est près de Jérusalem, à la distance d'un kilomètre environ. 13 Quand ils furent arrivés, ils montèrent à l'étage dans la pièce où ils se tenaient d'ordinaire; il y avait là Pierre, Jean, Jacques, André, Philippe, Thomas, Barthélémy, Matthieu, Jacques, fils d'Alphée, Simon le zélote[b] et Jude, fils de Jacques. 14 Tous persévéraient d'un commun accord dans la prière avec les femmes, avec Marie la mère de Jésus et avec les frères de Jésus.

15 A cette époque-là, Pierre se leva au milieu des disciples; le nombre des personnes réunies était d'environ 120. Il dit: 16 «Mes frères, il fallait que s'accomplisse l’Ecriture[c], ce que le Saint-Esprit avait annoncé d'avance par la bouche de David au sujet de Judas, devenu le guide de ceux qui ont arrêté Jésus. 17 Il était l'un des nôtres et il avait part au même ministère. 18 Cet homme a acheté un champ avec le salaire du crime; il y est tombé en avant, s'est éventré et toutes ses entrailles sont sorties. 19 Tous les habitants de Jérusalem l'ont appris, c'est pourquoi ce champ a été appelé dans leur langue ‘Hakeldama’, c'est-à-dire ‘le champ du sang’. 20 Or il est écrit dans le livre des Psaumes: Que sa maison devienne déserte et que personne ne l'habite! et: Qu'un autre prenne sa charge![d]
21 »Il faut donc choisir un homme parmi ceux qui nous ont accompagnés tout le temps où le Seigneur Jésus a vécu avec nous, 22 depuis le baptême de Jean jusqu'au jour où il a été enlevé du milieu de nous. Il nous sera associé comme témoin de sa résurrection.»
23 Ils en présentèrent deux: Joseph appelé Barsabbas, surnommé Justus, et Matthias. 24 Puis ils firent cette prière: «Seigneur, toi qui connais le cœur de tous, désigne lequel de ces deux hommes tu as choisi 25 pour prendre part à ce ministère et à cette charge d'apôtre que Judas a abandonnés pour aller à la place qui est la sienne.» 26 Ils tirèrent au sort et le sort tomba sur Matthias, qui fut associé aux onze apôtres.

Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven
1 In my former book,(A) Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach(B) 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven,(C) after giving instructions(D) through the Holy Spirit to the apostles(E) he had chosen.(F) 3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them(G) over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.(H) 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait(I) for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.(J) 5 For John baptized with[a] water,(K) but in a few days you will be baptized with[b] the Holy Spirit.”(L)
6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore(M) the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.(N) 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;(O) and you will be my witnesses(P) in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,(Q) and to the ends of the earth.”(R)
9 After he said this, he was taken up(S) before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white(T) stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,”(U) they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back(V) in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas
12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem(W) from the hill called the Mount of Olives,(X) a Sabbath day’s walk[c] from the city. 13 When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room(Y) where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.(Z) 14 They all joined together constantly in prayer,(AA) along with the women(AB) and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.(AC)
15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, “Brothers and sisters,[d](AD) the Scripture had to be fulfilled(AE) in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas,(AF) who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number(AG) and shared in our ministry.”(AH)
18 (With the payment(AI) he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field;(AJ) there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language(AK) Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:
and,
21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John’s baptism(AN) to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness(AO) with us of his resurrection.”
23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed,(AP) “Lord, you know everyone’s heart.(AQ) Show us(AR) which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.(AS)

1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)
16 Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
17 For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
18 Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
24 And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,
25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
