Seven Chosen to Serve
6 Now in those days, (A)when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the (B)Hellenists,[a] because their widows were neglected (C)in the daily distribution. 2 Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, (D)“It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. 3 Therefore, brethren, (E)seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this (F)business; 4 but we (G)will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, (H)a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and (I)Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and (J)Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch, 6 whom they set before the apostles; and (K)when they had prayed, (L)they laid hands on them.
7 Then (M)the word of God spread, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many (N)of the priests were obedient to the faith.
Stephen Accused of Blasphemy
8 And Stephen, full of [b]faith and power, did great (O)wonders and signs among the people. 9 Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. 10 And (P)they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. 11 (Q)Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council. 13 They also set up false witnesses who said, “This man does not cease to speak [c]blasphemous words against this holy place and the law; 14 (R)for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.” 15 And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.

6 În zilele acelea, când s-a(A) înmulţit numărul ucenicilor, evreii care vorbeau greceşte(B) cârteau împotriva evreilor, pentru că văduvele lor erau trecute cu vederea la împărţeala(C) ajutoarelor de toate zilele. 2 Cei doisprezece au adunat mulţimea ucenicilor şi au zis: „Nu(D) este potrivit pentru noi să lăsăm Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu ca să slujim la mese. 3 De aceea, fraţilor, alegeţi(E) dintre voi şapte bărbaţi, vorbiţi de bine, plini de Duhul Sfânt şi înţelepciune, pe care îi vom pune la slujba aceasta. 4 Iar noi vom(F) stărui necurmat în rugăciune şi în propovăduirea Cuvântului.” 5 Vorbirea aceasta a plăcut întregii adunări. Au ales pe Ştefan, bărbat(G) plin de credinţă şi de Duhul Sfânt, pe Filip(H), pe Prohor, pe Nicanor, pe Timon, pe Parmena şi pe Nicolae(I), un prozelit din Antiohia. 6 I-au adus înaintea apostolilor, care(J), după ce s-au rugat, şi-au(K) pus mâinile peste ei.
Ştefan învinuit de hulă
7 Cuvântul(L) lui Dumnezeu se răspândea tot mai mult, numărul ucenicilor se înmulţea mult în Ierusalim şi o mare mulţime de(M) preoţi veneau la credinţă. 8 Ştefan era plin de har şi de putere şi făcea minuni şi semne mari în norod. 9 Unii din sinagoga numită a Izbăviţilor, a Cirinenilor şi a Alexandrinilor, împreună cu nişte iudei din Cilicia şi din Asia, au început o ceartă de vorbe cu Ştefan, 10 dar(N) nu puteau să stea împotriva înţelepciunii şi Duhului cu care vorbea el. 11 Atunci(O), au pus la cale pe nişte oameni să zică: „Noi l-am auzit rostind cuvinte de hulă împotriva lui Moise şi împotriva lui Dumnezeu”. 12 Au întărâtat norodul, pe bătrâni şi pe cărturari, au năvălit asupra lui, au pus mâna pe el şi l-au dus în sobor. 13 Au scos nişte martori mincinoşi, care au zis: „Omul acesta nu încetează să spună cuvinte de hulă împotriva acestui locaş sfânt şi împotriva Legii. 14 În adevăr(P), l-am auzit zicând că acest Isus din Nazaret va dărâma(Q) locaşul acesta şi va schimba obiceiurile, pe care ni le-a dat Moise.” 15 Toţi cei ce şedeau în sobor s-au uitat ţintă la Ştefan, şi faţa lui li s-a arătat ca o faţă de înger.
