保羅上訴凱撒
25 非斯都到任三天之後，就從該撒利亞去耶路撒冷。 2 祭司長和猶太人的首領，到他面前控告保羅。他們又要求非斯都， 3 求他恩准對付保羅，把保羅解來耶路撒冷，他們好埋伏在路上殺死他。 4 非斯都回答：“保羅現今押在該撒利亞，我就要回到那裡去。” 5 又說：“你們中間有權勢的，和我一同去吧！那人若有甚麼不是，他們就可以告他。”
6 非斯都在他們那裡大約逗留了不過十天八天，就回到該撒利亞去。第二天就開庭，吩咐把保羅帶來。 7 保羅一到，那些從耶路撒冷來的猶太人，就站在他周圍，提出許多嚴重的控告，可是所控告的他們都不能證實。 8 保羅申辯說：“無論對猶太人的律法、聖殿或凱撒，我都沒有罪。” 9 但非斯都為要討好猶太人，就問保羅：“你願意去耶路撒冷，讓我在那裡審問這事嗎？” 10 保羅說：“我現在站在凱撒的審判臺前，這裡是我應當受審的地方。我對猶太人並沒有作過甚麼不對的事，這是你清楚知道的。 11 我若作過不對的事，犯過甚麼該死的罪，就是死我也不推辭。不過，如果這些人告我的事不是真的，誰也不可以把我送給他們。我要向凱撒上訴。” 12 非斯都同議會商量後，答覆說：“你既然要向凱撒上訴，可以到凱撒那裡去。”
亞基帕王要聽保羅的案情
13 過了一些日子，亞基帕王和百尼基到該撒利亞來，問候非斯都。 14 他們在那裡逗留了許多天，非斯都把保羅的案情向王陳明，說：“這裡有一個囚犯，是腓力斯留下來的。 15 我在耶路撒冷的時候，祭司長和猶太人的長老控告他，要求把他定罪。 16 我答覆他們說，被告還沒有和原告當面對證，又沒有機會為所控的罪申辯，就被送給對方，羅馬人沒有這個規例。 17 後來他們都到了這裡，我沒有耽延時間，第二天就開庭，吩咐把那人提出來。 18 原告都站在那裡，他們所控訴他的，並不是我所意料的惡事。 19 他們與他爭辯的，只是他們的宗教問題；還論到一位已經死了的耶穌，保羅卻說他是活著的。 20 關於這些爭論，我不知道怎樣處理，就問他願不願意上耶路撒冷去為這些事在那裡受審。 21 但保羅要求把他留下，等待皇上裁判，我就下令把他押起來，等候解往凱撒那裡。” 22 亞基帕對非斯都說：“我也想聽聽這人說些甚麼。”非斯都說：“明天就請你來聽。”
23 第二天，亞基帕和百尼基威風凜凜地來了，同千夫長和城中的顯要進了廳堂。非斯都吩咐一聲，就有人把保羅提出來。 24 非斯都說：“亞基帕王和在座的各位，請看這個人。耶路撒冷和本地的猶太人都向我請求，嚷著說這個人不該活著。 25 我查明他沒有犯甚麼該死的罪，但是他自己既然要向皇上上訴，我就決定把他解去。 26 關於這個人，我沒有甚麼確實的事可以呈奏主上的。所以把他帶到你們面前，特別是你亞基帕王面前，為要在審查之後，有所陳奏。 27 因為我認為解送囚犯，不指明他的罪狀，是不合理的。”

25 Therefore Festus, having arrived in the Province, after shloshah yamim went up from Caesarea to Yerushalayim,
2 Where the Rashei Hakohanim and manhigim of the Yehudim explained to Festus the charges keneged Rav Sha’ul, and they were begging him,
3 Asking a favor from him, that Festus might summon Rav Sha’ul to Yerushalayim, while at the same time they were forming a kesher to kill him along the way.
4 Festus answered that Rav Sha’ul was to be kept in Caesarea and that Festus himself intended quickly to go there.
5 "Therefore, those in authority among you," Festus says, "should come down with me, and if there is anything in the wrong about Rav Sha’ul, then let them bring charges against him."
6 And having stayed with them no more than shmonah or asarah yamim, Festus went down to Caesarea; the next day he sat on the Kes HaMishpat and ordered Rav Sha’ul to be brought in.
7 When Rav Sha’ul came in, the Judeans who had come down from Yerushalayim stood around him and brought serious charges keneged (against) him, which they were not able to prove.
8 Rav Sha’ul defended himself, saying, "Neither keneged the Torah nor keneged the Beis Hamikdash nor keneged Caesar have I done anything wrong."
9 But Festus, wishing to grant the Judeans a favor, said in reply to Rav Sha’ul, "Do you want to go up to Yerushalayim to be judged by me there concerning these things?"
10 And Rav Sha’ul said, "I am standing before the Kes HaMishpat of Caesar, where it is necessary for me to be tried. I have done no wrong to my Jewish people, as you also have da’as very well.
11 "Now if I have done wrong and am worthy of mavet, I am not trying to escape the penalty. But if there is nothing to the charges these bring against me, no one is able to hand me over to them. Therefore, I appeal to Caesar."
12 Then Festus, having talked with his council, answered, "To Caesar you have appealed, to Caesar you will go."
13 After several yamim had passed, Agrippa HaMelech and Bernice arrived in Caesarea, having paid their respects to Festus.
14 And while they were spending many yamim there, Festus laid out to the Melech the things with respect to Rav Sha’ul, saying, "There is a man here who was left behind in the beis hasohar by Felix.
15 "When I went to Yerushalayim, the Rashei Hakohanim and the Zekenim of the Yehudim informed me about this man, requesting keneged him a sentence of condemnation.
16 "I answered them that it violated Roman law to hand over any man before the accused met face to face with his accusers and had an opportunity for a hitstaddekut (defense) concerning the accusation.
17 "Therefore, they were assembled here; I allowed no delay, and on the next day, I sat down on the Kes HaMishpat and ordered the man brought in.
18 "But when the accusers stood up, no charge were they bringing of any crimes I was expecting.
19 "Instead it was an internal matter having to do with questions regarding Orthodox Judaism, and certain disagreements they had with Rav Sha’ul, and regarding a certain Yehoshua who was deceased, but whom Rav Sha’ul asserted was alive.
20 "Since I was not qualified to investigate these religious questions, I was saying he might wish to go to Yerushalayim and there to be judged concerning these things.
21 "But Rav Sha’ul appealed that he be kept in custody for the decision of Caesar, so I ordered him to be kept until I send him to Caesar."
22 And Agrippa said to Festus, "I was desiring also myself to hear Rav Sha’ul." Then Festus says, "Tomorrow you will hear him."
23 Then on the next day Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp and entered into the auditorium along with both the military tribunes and the chashuve anashim of Caesarea. And Festus the Moshel gave orders to have Rav Sha’ul brought in.
24 And Festus says, "Agrippa HaMelech and all here present with us, you see this man about whom K’lal Yisroel has petitioned me, both in Yerushalayim and here, shouting that he is no longer fit to live.
25 "But I found he has done nothing worthy of mavet, and when he appealed to Caesar, I decided to send him.
26 "But I have nothing definite to write to our sovereign; therefore, I especially brought him before you, O Agrippa HaMelech, so that, after you have examined him, I may have something I may write.
27 "For it seems unreasonable to me sending a prisoner and not having charges to report against him."
Acts 25

25 Now when Festus had entered into his own province, after three days he went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem.
2 And [there] the chief priests and the principal men of the Jews laid charges before him against Paul, and they kept begging and urging him,
3 Asking as a favor that he would have him brought to Jerusalem; [meanwhile] they were planning an ambush to slay him on the way.
4 Festus answered that Paul was in custody in Caesarea and that he himself planned to leave for there soon.
5 So, said he, let those who are in a position of authority and are influential among you go down with me, and if there is anything amiss or criminal about the man, let them so charge him.
6 So when Festus had remained among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea, took his seat the next day on the judgment bench, and ordered Paul to be brought before him.
7 And when he arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood all around him, bringing many grave accusations against him which they were not able to prove.
8 Paul declared in [his own] defense, Neither against the Law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I offended in any way.
9 But Festus, wishing to ingratiate himself with the Jews, answered Paul, Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and there be put on trial [[a]before the Jewish Sanhedrin] in my presence concerning these charges?
10 But Paul replied, I am standing before Caesar’s judgment seat, where I ought to be tried. To the Jews I have done no wrong, as you know [b]better [than your question implies].
11 If then I am a wrongdoer and a criminal and have committed anything for which I deserve to die, I do not beg off and seek to escape death; but if there is no ground for their accusations against me, no one can give me up and make a present of me [[c]give me up freely] to them. I appeal to Caesar.
12 Then Festus, when he had consulted with the [[d]men who formed his] council, answered, You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar you shall go.
13 Now after an interval of some days, Agrippa the king and Bernice arrived at Caesarea to pay their respects to Festus [to welcome him and wish him well].
14 And while they remained there for many days, Festus acquainted the king with Paul’s case, telling him, There is a man left a prisoner in chains by Felix;
15 And when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me about him, petitioning for a judicial hearing and condemnation of him.
16 But I replied to them that it was not the custom of the Romans to [e]give up freely any man for punishment before the accused had met the accusers face to face and had opportunity to defend himself concerning the charge brought against him.
17 So when they came here together, I did not delay, but on the morrow took my place on the judgment seat and ordered that the man be brought before me.
18 [But] when the accusers stood up, they brought forward no accusation [in his case] of any such misconduct as I was expecting.
19 Instead they had some points of controversy with him about their own religion or superstition and concerning one Jesus, Who had died but Whom Paul kept asserting [over and over] to be alive.
20 And I, being puzzled to know how to make inquiries into such questions, asked whether he would be willing to go to Jerusalem and there be tried regarding them.
21 But when Paul had appealed to have his case retained for examination and decision by the emperor, I ordered that he be detained until I could send him to Caesar.
22 Then Agrippa said to Festus, I also desire to hear the man myself. Tomorrow, [Festus] replied, you shall hear him.
23 So the next day Agrippa and Bernice approached with great display, and they went into the audience hall accompanied by the military commandants and the prominent citizens of the city. At the order of Festus Paul was brought in.
24 Then Festus said, King Agrippa and all the men present with us, you see this man about whom the whole Jewish people came to me and complained, both at Jerusalem and here, insisting and shouting that he ought not to live any longer.
25 But I found nothing that he had done deserving of death. Still, as he himself appealed to the emperor, I determined to send him to Rome.
26 [However] I have nothing in particular and definite to write to my lord concerning him. So I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that after [further] examination has been made, I may have something to put in writing.
27 For it seems to me senseless and absurd to send a prisoner and not state the accusations against him.
