保羅上訴凱撒

25 非斯都到任三天之後,就從該撒利亞去耶路撒冷。 祭司長和猶太人的首領,到他面前控告保羅。他們又要求非斯都, 求他恩准對付保羅,把保羅解來耶路撒冷,他們好埋伏在路上殺死他。 非斯都回答:“保羅現今押在該撒利亞,我就要回到那裡去。” 又說:“你們中間有權勢的,和我一同去吧!那人若有甚麼不是,他們就可以告他。”

非斯都在他們那裡大約逗留了不過十天八天,就回到該撒利亞去。第二天就開庭,吩咐把保羅帶來。 保羅一到,那些從耶路撒冷來的猶太人,就站在他周圍,提出許多嚴重的控告,可是所控告的他們都不能證實。 保羅申辯說:“無論對猶太人的律法、聖殿或凱撒,我都沒有罪。” 但非斯都為要討好猶太人,就問保羅:“你願意去耶路撒冷,讓我在那裡審問這事嗎?” 10 保羅說:“我現在站在凱撒的審判臺前,這裡是我應當受審的地方。我對猶太人並沒有作過甚麼不對的事,這是你清楚知道的。 11 我若作過不對的事,犯過甚麼該死的罪,就是死我也不推辭。不過,如果這些人告我的事不是真的,誰也不可以把我送給他們。我要向凱撒上訴。” 12 非斯都同議會商量後,答覆說:“你既然要向凱撒上訴,可以到凱撒那裡去。”

亞基帕王要聽保羅的案情

13 過了一些日子,亞基帕王和百尼基到該撒利亞來,問候非斯都。 14 他們在那裡逗留了許多天,非斯都把保羅的案情向王陳明,說:“這裡有一個囚犯,是腓力斯留下來的。 15 我在耶路撒冷的時候,祭司長和猶太人的長老控告他,要求把他定罪。 16 我答覆他們說,被告還沒有和原告當面對證,又沒有機會為所控的罪申辯,就被送給對方,羅馬人沒有這個規例。 17 後來他們都到了這裡,我沒有耽延時間,第二天就開庭,吩咐把那人提出來。 18 原告都站在那裡,他們所控訴他的,並不是我所意料的惡事。 19 他們與他爭辯的,只是他們的宗教問題;還論到一位已經死了的耶穌,保羅卻說他是活著的。 20 關於這些爭論,我不知道怎樣處理,就問他願不願意上耶路撒冷去為這些事在那裡受審。 21 但保羅要求把他留下,等待皇上裁判,我就下令把他押起來,等候解往凱撒那裡。” 22 亞基帕對非斯都說:“我也想聽聽這人說些甚麼。”非斯都說:“明天就請你來聽。”

23 第二天,亞基帕和百尼基威風凜凜地來了,同千夫長和城中的顯要進了廳堂。非斯都吩咐一聲,就有人把保羅提出來。 24 非斯都說:“亞基帕王和在座的各位,請看這個人。耶路撒冷和本地的猶太人都向我請求,嚷著說這個人不該活著。 25 我查明他沒有犯甚麼該死的罪,但是他自己既然要向皇上上訴,我就決定把他解去。 26 關於這個人,我沒有甚麼確實的事可以呈奏主上的。所以把他帶到你們面前,特別是你亞基帕王面前,為要在審查之後,有所陳奏。 27 因為我認為解送囚犯,不指明他的罪狀,是不合理的。”

Paul Stands in Front of Festus

25 Three days after Festus had become leader in the country, he went from the city of Caesarea to Jerusalem. The head religious leaders and the leaders of the Jews told Festus what they had against Paul. They asked Festus for a favor. They wanted Paul to be brought to Jerusalem because they had plans to kill him on the way. Festus told them that Paul was to be kept in Caesarea and that he would be going there soon. Festus said, “If Paul has done anything wrong, let your leaders go along with me and say what they have against him.”

After staying with them about ten days, Festus went down to Caesarea. The next day he sat in the courtroom and asked for Paul to be brought in. Paul came into the courtroom. The Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him. They said many bad things against him. But they could not prove any of the things they said. Paul spoke for himself, saying, “I have done nothing wrong against the Law of the Jews or against the house of God or against Caesar.”

Festus was hoping to get the respect of the Jews. He asked Paul, “Will you go to the court in Jerusalem and let me say if you are guilty or not about these things?” 10 Paul said, “I am standing in front of Caesar’s court where I should be told I am right or wrong. I have done no wrong to the Jews. You know that. 11 If I have done wrong and should die, I am not trying to keep from dying. But if these things they say against me are not true, no one can give me over to them. I ask to be taken to Caesar.” 12 Festus talked to the leaders of the court. Then he said to Paul, “You have asked to be taken to Caesar. You will go to him.”

Festus Tells King Agrippa about Paul

13 After a few days, King Agrippa and his wife, Bernice, came down to Caesarea. They went to Festus to greet him. 14 They stayed there a few days. Festus told them about Paul. He said, “There is a man here who was left in prison by Felix. 15 When I was at Jerusalem, the head religious leaders and the leaders of the people told me about him and asked me to say that he is guilty. 16 I told them it was against the Roman law to hand over a man to be put to death before he stood face to face with those who had something against him and could speak for himself. 17 When they came here, I took my seat in the courtroom at once. I had the man brought in. 18 When the others spoke, they had nothing against him that I thought they had. 19 They did not agree with him about their own religion, and they argued about someone called Jesus. He had died but Paul kept saying He was alive. 20 I did not know what to do. Then I asked him if he would go on trial about these things at Jerusalem. 21 But Paul asked to go on trial in front of Caesar. I said that he should be kept in prison until he could be sent to Caesar.” 22 Agrippa said to Festus, “I would like to hear this man.” Festus said, “Tomorrow you will hear him.”

Paul Stands in Front of King Agrippa

23 The next day Agrippa and Bernice came into the courtroom. They were dressed to show their greatness as king and queen. Army leaders and leading men of the city came in with them. Festus had Paul brought in.

24 Festus said, “King Agrippa and all of you who are here with us, you see this man. All of the Jews both here and at Jerusalem are saying that Paul should be put to death. 25 I have heard nothing against him that would be reason to put him to death. But he asked for a trial in front of Caesar. I have agreed to send Paul to him. 26 When I write to Caesar, I have nothing to say against him. For this reason, I brought him in front of you all and in front of you, King Agrippa. After we ask him questions, I may have something to write about. 27 It is foolish for me to send a man up for trial without writing what is against him.”

Paul Appeals to Caesar

25 Now when[a] Festus set foot in the province, after three days he went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea. And the chief priests and the most prominent men of the Jews brought charges against Paul to him, and were urging him, asking for a favor against him, that he summon him to Jerusalem, because they[b] were preparing an ambush to do away with him along the way. Then Festus replied that Paul was being kept at Caesarea, and he himself was about to go there[c] in a short time. So he said, “Let those among you who are prominent go down with me,[d] and[e] if there is any wrong in the man, let them bring charges against him.”

And after he[f] had stayed among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea. On the next day he sat down on the judgment seat and[g] gave orders for Paul to be brought. And when[h] he arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many and serious charges that they were not able to prove, while[i] Paul said in his defense, “Neither against the law of the Jews nor against the temple nor against Caesar have I sinned with reference to anything!” But Festus, because he[j] wanted to do a favor for the Jews, answered and[k] said to Paul, “Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem to be tried before me there concerning these things?” 10 But Paul said, “I am standing before the judgment seat of Caesar, where it is necessary for me to be judged. I have done no wrong to the Jews, as you also know very well. 11 If then I am doing wrong[l] and have done anything deserving death, I am not trying to avoid[m] dying. But if there is nothing true of the things which these people are accusing me, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar!” 12 Then Festus, after[n] discussing this[o] with his[p] council, replied, “You have appealed to Caesar—to Caesar you will go!”

Festus Asks King Agrippa for Advice

13 Now after[q] some days had passed, King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea to welcome Festus. 14 And while they were staying there many days, Festus laid out the case against Paul to the king, saying, “There is a certain man left behind by Felix as a prisoner, 15 concerning whom when[r] I was in Jerusalem the chief priests and the elders of the Jews presented evidence, asking for a sentence of condemnation against him. 16 To them[s] I replied that it was not the custom of the Romans to give up any man before the one who had been accused met his[t] accusers face to face and received an opportunity for a defense concerning the accusation. 17 Therefore, when[u] they had assembled here, I made[v] no delay; on the next day I sat down on the judgment seat and[w] gave orders for the man to be brought. 18 When they[x] stood up, his[y] accusers began bringing[z] no charge concerning him[aa] of the evil deeds that I was suspecting, 19 but they had some issues with him concerning their own religion, and concerning a certain Jesus, who was dead, whom Paul claimed to be alive. 20 And because[ab] I was at a loss with regard to the investigation concerning these things, I asked if he was willing to go to Jerusalem and to be judged there concerning these things. 21 But when[ac] Paul appealed that he be kept under guard for the decision of His Majesty the Emperor, I gave orders for him to be kept under guard until I could send him to Caesar.” 22 So Agrippa said to Festus, “I want to hear the man myself also.” “Tomorrow,” he said, “you will hear him.”

23 So on the next day, Agrippa and Bernice came with great pageantry and entered into the audience hall, along with military tribunes and the most prominent men of the city. And when[ad] Festus gave the order, Paul was brought in. 24 And Festus said, “King Agrippa and all who are present with us, you see this man about whom the whole population of the Jews appealed to me, both in Jerusalem and here, shouting that he must not live any longer. 25 But I understood that he had done nothing deserving death himself, and when[ae] this man appealed to His Majesty the Emperor, I decided to send him.[af] 26 I do not have anything definite to write to my[ag] lord about him.[ah] Therefore I have brought him before you all[ai]—and especially before you, King Agrippa—so that after[aj] this preliminary hearing has taken place, I may have something to write. 27 For it seems unreasonable to me to send a prisoner and not to indicate the charges against him.”
