22 ανδρες αδελφοι και πατερες ακουσατε μου της προς υμας νυν απολογιας
2 ακουσαντες δε οτι τη εβραιδι διαλεκτω προσεφωνει αυτοις μαλλον παρεσχον ησυχιαν και φησιν
3 εγω μεν ειμι ανηρ ιουδαιος γεγεννημενος εν ταρσω της κιλικιας ανατεθραμμενος δε εν τη πολει ταυτη παρα τους ποδας γαμαλιηλ πεπαιδευμενος κατα ακριβειαν του πατρωου νομου ζηλωτης υπαρχων του θεου καθως παντες υμεις εστε σημερον
4 ος ταυτην την οδον εδιωξα αχρι θανατου δεσμευων και παραδιδους εις φυλακας ανδρας τε και γυναικας
5 ως και ο αρχιερευς μαρτυρει μοι και παν το πρεσβυτεριον παρ ων και επιστολας δεξαμενος προς τους αδελφους εις δαμασκον επορευομην αξων και τους εκεισε οντας δεδεμενους εις ιερουσαλημ ινα τιμωρηθωσιν
6 εγενετο δε μοι πορευομενω και εγγιζοντι τη δαμασκω περι μεσημβριαν εξαιφνης εκ του ουρανου περιαστραψαι φως ικανον περι εμε
7 επεσον τε εις το εδαφος και ηκουσα φωνης λεγουσης μοι σαουλ σαουλ τι με διωκεις
8 εγω δε απεκριθην τις ει κυριε ειπεν τε προς με εγω ειμι ιησους ο ναζωραιος ον συ διωκεις
9 οι δε συν εμοι οντες το μεν φως εθεασαντο και εμφοβοι εγενοντο την δε φωνην ουκ ηκουσαν του λαλουντος μοι
10 ειπον δε τι ποιησω κυριε ο δε κυριος ειπεν προς με αναστας πορευου εις δαμασκον κακει σοι λαληθησεται περι παντων ων τετακται σοι ποιησαι
11 ως δε ουκ ενεβλεπον απο της δοξης του φωτος εκεινου χειραγωγουμενος υπο των συνοντων μοι ηλθον εις δαμασκον
12 ανανιας δε τις ανηρ ευσεβης κατα τον νομον μαρτυρουμενος υπο παντων των κατοικουντων ιουδαιων
13 ελθων προς με και επιστας ειπεν μοι σαουλ αδελφε αναβλεψον καγω αυτη τη ωρα ανεβλεψα εις αυτον
14 ο δε ειπεν ο θεος των πατερων ημων προεχειρισατο σε γνωναι το θελημα αυτου και ιδειν τον δικαιον και ακουσαι φωνην εκ του στοματος αυτου
15 οτι εση μαρτυς αυτω προς παντας ανθρωπους ων εωρακας και ηκουσας
16 και νυν τι μελλεις αναστας βαπτισαι και απολουσαι τας αμαρτιας σου επικαλεσαμενος το ονομα του κυριου
17 εγενετο δε μοι υποστρεψαντι εις ιερουσαλημ και προσευχομενου μου εν τω ιερω γενεσθαι με εν εκστασει
18 και ιδειν αυτον λεγοντα μοι σπευσον και εξελθε εν ταχει εξ ιερουσαλημ διοτι ου παραδεξονται σου την μαρτυριαν περι εμου
19 καγω ειπον κυριε αυτοι επιστανται οτι εγω ημην φυλακιζων και δερων κατα τας συναγωγας τους πιστευοντας επι σε
20 και οτε εξεχειτο το αιμα στεφανου του μαρτυρος σου και αυτος ημην εφεστως και συνευδοκων τη αναιρεσει αυτου και φυλασσων τα ιματια των αναιρουντων αυτον
21 και ειπεν προς με πορευου οτι εγω εις εθνη μακραν εξαποστελω σε
22 ηκουον δε αυτου αχρι τουτου του λογου και επηραν την φωνην αυτων λεγοντες αιρε απο της γης τον τοιουτον ου γαρ καθηκον αυτον ζην
23 κραυγαζοντων δε αυτων και ριπτουντων τα ιματια και κονιορτον βαλλοντων εις τον αερα
24 εκελευσεν αυτον ο χιλιαρχος αγεσθαι εις την παρεμβολην ειπων μαστιξιν ανεταζεσθαι αυτον ινα επιγνω δι ην αιτιαν ουτως επεφωνουν αυτω
25 ως δε προετειναν αυτον τοις ιμασιν ειπεν προς τον εστωτα εκατονταρχον ο παυλος ει ανθρωπον ρωμαιον και ακατακριτον εξεστιν υμιν μαστιζειν
26 ακουσας δε ο εκατονταρχος προσελθων απηγγειλεν τω χιλιαρχω λεγων ορα τι μελλεις ποιειν ο γαρ ανθρωπος ουτος ρωμαιος εστιν
27 προσελθων δε ο χιλιαρχος ειπεν αυτω λεγε μοι ει συ ρωμαιος ει ο δε εφη ναι
28 απεκριθη τε ο χιλιαρχος εγω πολλου κεφαλαιου την πολιτειαν ταυτην εκτησαμην ο δε παυλος εφη εγω δε και γεγεννημαι
29 ευθεως ουν απεστησαν απ αυτου οι μελλοντες αυτον ανεταζειν και ο χιλιαρχος δε εφοβηθη επιγνους οτι ρωμαιος εστιν και οτι ην αυτον δεδεκως
30 τη δε επαυριον βουλομενος γνωναι το ασφαλες το τι κατηγορειται παρα των ιουδαιων ελυσεν αυτον απο των δεσμων και εκελευσεν ελθειν τους αρχιερεις και ολον το συνεδριον αυτων και καταγαγων τον παυλον εστησεν εις αυτους

22 «Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez ce que j'ai maintenant à vous dire pour ma défense!»
2 Lorsqu'ils entendirent qu'il leur parlait en langue hébraïque, ils redoublèrent de calme. Paul dit alors:
3 «Je suis juif, né à Tarse en Cilicie, mais j'ai été élevé à Jérusalem et formé aux pieds de Gamaliel dans la connaissance exacte de la loi héritée de nos ancêtres; j'étais plein de zèle pour Dieu, comme vous l'êtes tous aujourd'hui. 4 J'ai combattu à mort cet enseignement, enchaînant et mettant en prison hommes et femmes. 5 Le grand-prêtre et tout le collège des anciens m'en sont témoins, puisque j'ai même reçu d'eux des lettres pour les frères de Damas, où je me suis rendu afin d'arrêter ceux qui s'y trouvaient et de les ramener à Jérusalem pour les faire punir.
6 »J'étais en chemin et j'approchais de Damas quand tout à coup, vers midi, une grande lumière venue du ciel a resplendi autour de moi. 7 Je suis tombé par terre et j’ai entendu une voix qui me disait: ‘Saul, Saul, pourquoi me persécutes-tu?’ 8 J’ai répondu: ‘Qui es-tu, Seigneur?’ Il m’a dit: ‘Je suis Jésus de Nazareth, celui que tu persécutes.’ 9 Ceux qui étaient avec moi ont bien vu la lumière [et ont été effrayés], mais ils n’ont pas compris celui qui me parlait. 10 Alors j’ai dit: ‘Que dois-je faire, Seigneur?’ Et le Seigneur m’a dit: ‘Lève-toi, va à Damas et là on te dira tout ce que tu dois faire.’ 11 Comme je ne voyais plus à cause de l'éclat de cette lumière, ceux qui étaient avec moi m’ont pris par la main et je suis arrivé à Damas.
12 »Or un certain Ananias, un homme pieux, fidèle à la loi et estimé de tous les Juifs qui résidaient à Damas, 13 est venu me trouver. Il m’a dit: ‘Saul, mon frère, retrouve la vue.’ Au même instant, j’ai pu le voir. 14 Il a ajouté: ‘Le Dieu de nos ancêtres t'a destiné à connaître sa volonté, à voir le juste et à entendre les paroles de sa bouche, 15 car tu seras son témoin, devant tous les hommes, de ce que tu as vu et entendu. 16 Et maintenant, pourquoi tarder? Lève-toi, sois baptisé et sois lavé de tes péchés en faisant appel au nom du Seigneur.’
17 »De retour à Jérusalem, comme je priais dans le temple, je suis tombé en extase 18 et j’ai vu le Seigneur qui me disait: ‘Dépêche-toi, sors rapidement de Jérusalem parce qu'ils n’accueilleront pas ton témoignage à mon sujet.’ 19 J’ai répondu: ‘Seigneur, ils savent bien que j’allais de synagogue en synagogue pour faire mettre en prison et fouetter ceux qui croyaient en toi. 20 De plus, lorsqu'on a versé le sang d'Etienne, ton témoin, j'étais moi-même présent, approuvant [son exécution] et gardant les vêtements de ceux qui le faisaient mourir.’ 21 Alors le Seigneur m’a dit: ‘Vas-y, car je t'enverrai au loin vers les non-Juifs.’»
22 La foule l’avait écouté jusqu'à ces mots, mais ils se mirent alors à crier: «Fais disparaître de la terre un pareil homme! Il n'est pas digne de vivre.» 23 Ils poussaient des cris, jetaient leurs vêtements et lançaient de la poussière en l'air.
24 Le commandant ordonna de faire entrer Paul dans la forteresse et de procéder à son interrogatoire par le fouet afin de savoir pour quel motif ils criaient ainsi contre lui. 25 Alors qu'ils l'attachaient avec des courroies, Paul dit à l’officier qui était présent: «Avez-vous le droit de fouetter un citoyen romain qui n'est pas même condamné?» 26 A ces mots, l’officier alla avertir le commandant en disant: «Attention à ce que tu vas faire, car cet homme est romain.» 27 S’approchant de Paul, le commandant lui demanda: «Dis-moi, es-tu romain?» «Oui», répondit-il. 28 Le commandant reprit: «C'est avec beaucoup d'argent que j'ai acquis ce droit de citoyen.» «Quant à moi, dit Paul, je l’ai de naissance.» 29 Aussitôt ceux qui devaient procéder à l’interrogatoire se retirèrent, et le commandant eut peur en prenant conscience que Paul était romain et qu'il l'avait fait enchaîner.
30 Le lendemain, le commandant voulut savoir avec certitude de quoi les Juifs l'accusaient. Il le fit détacher et donna l'ordre aux chefs des prêtres et à tout le sanhédrin[a] de se réunir; puis il fit venir Paul et le plaça au milieu d'eux.

22 “Brethren and fathers, hear the defense which I now make before you.”
2 And when they heard that he addressed them in the Hebrew language, they were the more quiet. And he said:
3 “I am a Jew, born at Tarsus in Cili′cia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gama′li-el, educated according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God as you all are this day. 4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering to prison both men and women, 5 as the high priest and the whole council of elders bear me witness. From them I received letters to the brethren, and I journeyed to Damascus to take those also who were there and bring them in bonds to Jerusalem to be punished.
Paul Tells of His Conversion
6 “As I made my journey and drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from heaven suddenly shone about me. 7 And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ 8 And I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And he said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth whom you are persecuting.’ 9 Now those who were with me saw the light but did not hear the voice of the one who was speaking to me. 10 And I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Rise, and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all that is appointed for you to do.’ 11 And when I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and came into Damascus.
12 “And one Anani′as, a devout man according to the law, well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, 13 came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And in that very hour I received my sight and saw him. 14 And he said, ‘The God of our fathers appointed you to know his will, to see the Just One and to hear a voice from his mouth; 15 for you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’
Paul Sent to the Gentiles
17 “When I had returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw him saying to me, ‘Make haste and get quickly out of Jerusalem, because they will not accept your testimony about me.’ 19 And I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believed in thee. 20 And when the blood of Stephen thy witness was shed, I also was standing by and approving, and keeping the garments of those who killed him.’ 21 And he said to me, ‘Depart; for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.’”
Paul and the Roman Tribune
22 Up to this word they listened to him; then they lifted up their voices and said, “Away with such a fellow from the earth! For he ought not to live.” 23 And as they cried out and waved their garments and threw dust into the air, 24 the tribune commanded him to be brought into the barracks, and ordered him to be examined by scourging, to find out why they shouted thus against him. 25 But when they had tied him up with the thongs, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, “Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman citizen, and uncondemned?” 26 When the centurion heard that, he went to the tribune and said to him, “What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.” 27 So the tribune came and said to him, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” And he said, “Yes.” 28 The tribune answered, “I bought this citizenship for a large sum.” Paul said, “But I was born a citizen.” 29 So those who were about to examine him withdrew from him instantly; and the tribune also was afraid, for he realized that Paul was a Roman citizen and that he had bound him.
Paul before the Council
30 But on the morrow, desiring to know the real reason why the Jews accused him, he unbound him, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to meet, and he brought Paul down and set him before them.
